I can’t wait to see how his game has developed next season.

Morrow needs to catch up with Randolph’s work ethics! lol

Ellis to the RIM!
Monta for the win?! YES!

I've heard that Morrow's been living in the gym.

He may not be bulking up like AR, but he’s a non-stop shooting machine.

Nellie

“To be sure, this machine-like Randolph didn’t just appear this offseason. Those close to Randolph said it’s been in the making for some time. It seems Nelson’s benching of Randolph earlier in the season did the trick.”

Man, I wonder if in a couple of years everyone will talk about the miracle benching that gave us a star.

This is a wonderful Randolph quote:

Randolph went home to Dallas to take some time off. He was determined to relax for a while. That is, until he made a mistake. He attended a playoff game, a first-round matchup between the Dallas Mavericks and San Antonio Spurs.
“It (ticked) me off,” Randolph said. “The atmosphere, I want to play in that bad. I want to get there.”

that’s exactly the sort of thing you want to hear from a young guy with as much talent as randolph. if you want to get there, get there; you’ve got the skills. what more could you ask for out of randolph in the offseason? this is great.

by Precise Films Productions on Jun 25, 2009 1:47 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Be careful what you wish for. If he’s too tall, that could actually be a negative thing. You see how Yao struggles to stay healthy with all the stress his 7’6 frame puts on his feet/knees. I’m hoping Randolph stays about where he is now. He’s already right around the size of a lot of the taller PFs, and taller than most SFs should he find a future there.

And I know you’re joking, but still, I’m hoping he tops out soon.

A puff piece to be sure, but it’s hard not to drool a little. I think it’s safe to say already that AR is more committed to getting stronger and fitter than BW was after his rookie campaign. And I love the bit about him not being able to watch the playoffs. Dude clearly wants to be a superstar.

Might be a good time to throw out “the question” again … in light of AR’s newfound strength and length, how many young players in the NBA would you rather have than him? My list…

Definites: Howard, LeBron
Probables: CP3.
Possibles: Roy, Deron, Rose.
Possibles, but Probably Nots: Oden (for lack of health), Durant (for lack of D).

I think that’s all I got.

Who said there was anything not to like about Griffin? I for one have been on his jock since the the early NCAA season. There have been few voices of dissent, but most people here agree that Griffin’s about as can’t-miss as they get. Saying I might rather have Randolph is not remotely the same as saying Griffin’s not going to be a very good player.

And DFiB, his skin is actually more like this:

Thing 1

by Sleepy Freud on Jun 18, 2009 1:11 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

“Saying I might rather have Randolph is not remotely the same as saying Griffin’s not going to be a very good player.”

What reason could you possibly have to want Randolph more than Griffin?

by Missing Barry on Jun 18, 2009 1:45 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Um: that I think Randolph is also going to be a very, very good player, at the same position, so don’t see the need to open Door #2?

Griffin’s best attribute is his rebounding; Randolph has proven himself able to do this in the NBA at an elite level. Both are freakishly good athletes for their size. Both appear to have that “it” factor that drives them succeed. Griffin is stronger and projects to be more of a beast in the post and a more efficient scorer. Randolph is longer and projects to be more of a beast on D; he also has a much nicer-looking stroke from midrange and the FT stripe.

In general moves that I think, logically, will improve the Warriors make me happy. If the Warriors traded AR for the #1 pick today, I wouldn’t be that happy about it. What else do you want me to say?

Thing 1

by Sleepy Freud on Jun 18, 2009 2:13 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Just based on a lot of the things you’re been saying like Randolph, it seems you think he’s proved a lot of skills in the NBA. At this point he really hasn’t. He flashed obvious potential, and I’m glad we have him, but all he’s really shown at the NBA level is the ability to get some rebounds and block some shots. He hasn’t shown he’s going to be a good defender. He hasn’t shown he’s going to be a good offensive player. He hasn’t shown he can shoot. Or pass. He’s had spells where he was plagued by turnovers, and if he had the ball more often, I feel his TO rate would be pretty poor. So basically, he’s still a prospect. A good one that’s shown the ability he should at least be a contributor, but still has a lot to prove.

Blake Griffin showed the ability to be a big time NCAA scorer, which is more than Randolph ever showed. By all accounts he has a very solid jumpshot now, if you believe the summer workouts. He’s an absolute animal on the boards, which aside from the importance of rebounding, I’ve seen jae say it’s a good indicator of overall NBA success. He’s also got the bulk you want in a 4, though I’ll grant you he doesn’t have nearly Randolph’s length.

I’d trade Randolph straight up for Griffin right now.

by Missing Barry on Jun 18, 2009 2:21 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Randolph FG% by month

.343
.452
.488
.500
.510
.472

By the end of the season he had also cut down his TO rate drastically: in his last 19 games he only turned it over more than twice in a game once — despite playing pretty heavy minutes.

He’s improving before our eyes, both during the season, and by all accounts at an accelerated pace this offseason. And he’s four months younger than Griffin. And you can’t teach his kind of length. At the top end, he projects to be Kevin Garnett. Griffin projects to be …what, Boozer? I’ll take Randolph, by a nose.

Thing 1

by Sleepy Freud on Jun 18, 2009 2:36 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Top end Griffin projects to be this guy, I dunno if you’ve ever heard of him, Karl Malone. 4 months younger might as well be the same…

by Missing Barry on Jun 18, 2009 2:44 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Karl Malone < Kevin Garnett. It’s not that close in terms of production (once you factor in defense) and it’s even less close in terms of aesthetics. I never liked Malone’s game, and cheered lustily when Jordan’s Bulls humiliated him. I disliked
Stockton too, but had tons more respect for him as a player. Obviously, they were both integral to that team, but I thought Stockton was more integral.

Nice use of irony, tho’: “I dunno if you’ve ever heard of him.” Cos like, in reality, everybody’s heard of Karl Malone. Very clever.

Obviously, four months younger is the same. That was the point — that at age 19 AR was taking his lumps v. NBA players while Griffin was devouring college kids.

Developmentally, I’d say Griffin, as a coach’s son, is more advanced than Randolph. It’s possible that has given him better habits, which he’ll use throughout his NBA career; it’s also possible that has put him a lot closer to his ceiling than AR. I guess I’d rather take a bit more of a gamble on the guy with the slightly higher (realistic) upside.

Thing 1

by Sleepy Freud on Jun 18, 2009 3:24 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

ps

Here’s a challenge for you, MB: since you seem to be drawing a qualitative distinction between Malone and Boozer, I’d be curious to hear by what statistical or anecdotal measure he’s so much better. Malone got himself to the FT line better and shot more, and distributed a bit better; Boozer shoots a bit better, rebounds a bit better and turns the ball over less. Neither played much D, and neither is the centerpiece of a championship team.

Malone by a hair, but not by nearly as much as his oversized reputation would suggest.

Thing 1

by Sleepy Freud on Jun 18, 2009 3:38 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Malone was a much better offensive player. Malone had 8 different seasons where he put up a TS% higher than Boozer’s career high. He had 16 seasons where he scored more points per 36 minutes than Boozer’s career high. Boozer rebounds at a better rate than Malone, but Malone was still good in that category. Later in his career Malone improved his assist rate to around 4 per 36 minutes. That’s better than Boozer, though I’ll note that at the age that Boozer is now, Malone had a pretty similar assist rate.

I’ll say I think Malone was athletic and played some decent on ball D (better than Boozer), but I’m not going to put much conviction behind that because I can’t say I was watching the game very analytically when I was ~10.

I always disliked Malone, but he was a great player, and one of the centerpieces of a team that would have won a championship if it wasn’t for Jordan.

“I guess I’d rather take a bit more of a gamble on the guy with the slightly higher (realistic) upside.”

If that’s the way you want to go, I have no argument. I can see Randolph, with his length and athleticism, having a higher ceiling. I just see it as not that much different, while Griffin is a much better bet to become a really good player.

By the way, Malone was a much better offensive player than Garnett, but Garnett is a defensive force so I’ll give him that.

by Missing Barry on Jun 18, 2009 4:39 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Career TS is rougly equal — .577 Malone to .572 Boozer — though Malone’s number is dragged down a bit by his decline years.

Overall, I mostly agree with what you wrote. I would say that Malone was a very very good player, the second-best player on a team with the second-best PG of all-time. As I noted, my issue with him is as much aesthetic as logical: he was crudely effective rather than beautiful. He had a system, using his strength to get to a position he liked on the floor, throwing up his trademark tunaround from 12-15, running the pick-and-roll w/ Stockton. No improvisation, no surprises. I considered Jordan and Pippen’s defeat of that system a triumph for all that is beautiful and jazzy and poetic and human over all that is mechanized and monotonous — kinda like the thrill of a person beating a computer at chess.

I actually think Griffin projects to be a better rebounder and more exciting player than Malone. But I’d still rather have AR.

Dunno about the taller part, or the more athletic part. He’s quicker because he weighs like 210 pounds compared to Griffin’s 250.

by YaHeard on Jun 17, 2009 9:08 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I guess I was considering “young” to be “under 25.” Wade’s 26.5. I’d probably trade AR for Wade, but I do worry about Wade’s long-term durability.

Thing 1

by Sleepy Freud on Jun 17, 2009 9:20 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

You’re throwing around some ridiculous probably’s and possibly’s right now. Howard, Lebron, Wade, CP3, Williams, Rose, Roy are all no questions asked do it without a second thought. AR flashed potential, but come on, these are young, legit stars in the league (mayeb not Rose yet but he’s shown he’s a lot closer than Randolph). Durant I’d definitely do. Oden probably not because who knows if he ever develops any O or can even stay healthy. Amare’s another definite. I’d probably trade AR for Rondo and Tony Parker, too, and I can probably think of a couple more but those are off the top of my head.

I mean it seems to me one fluff piece article has doubled AR’s stock…

by Missing Barry on Jun 18, 2009 7:01 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Parker's too old

Other than that, you’re right on point… except Oden also has to stay out of foul trouble. He’s a rich man’s Richard Hendrix.

Other definitelys:

Mayo
Bosh
Al Jefferson
Deron Williams
Iguodala

Possiblys:

Horford
Love
Lopez
Westbrook

by Dubs fan in Boston on Jun 18, 2009 9:01 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I included Williams. I don’t think I’d do Jefferson. I’m not a fan. All he does is score, and even then, I think his scoring efficiency is pretty average. He’s a black hole on offense. Good call on Igoudala, I’d agree with that. Bosh too. Mayo I’d put at probably, not ready to go definitely. Parker’s 27, so it’s not like he’s that old. His age is the only thing stopping him from being definitely instead of probably. I’d definitely at least consider those other 4, too. Definitely would do ’Melo, as well.

None of your definitelys

Is a definitely for me.

Indeed, all of them except Deron are almost certainly nots.

I’d actually take your four possiblys over your four remaining definitelys.

Lopez > Bosh (“)
Horford > Iguodala (”)
Westbrook > Mayo

Thing 1

by Sleepy Freud on Jun 18, 2009 12:49 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think you've got only 1 more year of Horford, maybe 2

Then you’ve got to start paying the man.

Somebody likes ’em young…

And you’d seriously take Westbrook over Mayo? What’s your reasoning?

You have been DFiBrillated.

by Dubs fan in Boston on Jun 18, 2009 1:01 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I’d take Horford over Iguodala even if their contracts were the same. You have to be a damn elite wing player (read: Roy, Kobe, Wade, or LeBron) to be worth more than a young, athletic rebounding and defending PF/C.

Westbrook v. Mayo … yeah, it’s probably about a push. As a Cal kid, I’ll always prefer (F)UCLA to the University of Spoiled Children. Heck, my brother is a tenured prof at USC and even he says the only reason to go to USC over UCLA is if you’re stupid, rich, or both.

Thing 1

by Sleepy Freud on Jun 18, 2009 1:19 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Horford has a ways to go to be as good as Iguodala. Iguodala is a good offensive and defensive player, rebounds well for a 2, and even throws some assists in there with a 2/1 a/t ratio. He’s a 20/5/5 type guy with D. Horford hasn’t shown much offensive game yet, I dunno much about his on ball D but he doesn’t block many shots indicating he’s not much of a help presence inside, and it’s not like he’s an amazing rebounder.

by Missing Barry on Jun 18, 2009 1:51 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I like Iggy. I was clamoring pretty hard to go after him this last offseason. Plus-minus loves him, which suggests to me that he brings a defensive presence that belies his good-but-not-great numbers overall.

I still think you’re underrating the positional value of being a legit NBA 4/5. Wing players are a dime a dozen. Since the original topic here was “for whom would you flip Randolph?”— do you think we’d better off with Horford manning the 4 and Monta/Jack/Morrow/Buike/Beli/Maggs at the wings, or with Iggy at one of the wings and Brandan Wright or Turiaf as our starting PF?

AR has the talent, and apparently now has the drive to be a great player. motivation is key with nba players, and if AR has the desire to play in the playoffs it’s likely that desire will transform into WINNING in the playoffs, and winning a championship. i’m so pysched to see the improvement next season…20 and 10 all the way baby!!!

ppl

AR is going to be like Scottie Pippen and KG put together in a crazy experiment. This boi is going to be 20, 10, 7 and 2 blk and stl machines. Nelson better not pulls another C-webb in the off season.

So…one of the top 3-5 players of all time (if not the greatest ever). After one season we’ve already figured this out? I’d still trade him for everyone I listed above, but thanks anyways.

On ESPN they were talking to LSU's basketball coach

and he mentioned how well mannered and easy AR was to deal with. So the only person to have problems with his attitude was nelson…just sayin

Nelson’s “problem” with AR’s attitude look pretty good in hindsight. He sat him until Randolph realized how hard he needed to work to be a good player. Randolph started figuring it out, and improved, and now seems much better off because of it…

Just saying I think Nelson helped turn his attitude around, nobody seems to have a problem with it these days.

Nobody had to deal with Randolph adjusting

from being a big fish in a small pond to being a small fish in a big pond.

He wasn't exactly dominant in college...

Difference is that he didn’t sit on the bench in college.

Well maybe at lower levels he could get by on his natural gifts alone, and Nelson knew that wasn’t going to get him anywhere in the NBA (think Darius Miles). I’m just saying it seems like Randolph gets it now. We’ll see by how much he improves the next couple years.
