Ellis for Josh Smith
Lots of conjecture about where Ellis stands with the team. I think he'd be fine staying, but fine going as well. To be honest I'd like him to stay but I feel that the front office has created a situation where trading Ellis might be the best value for the franchise, only if the right deal was out there of course.
While his value may generally be perceived as in decline on the market because of the moped incident and all this recent drama, his talent, production, and youth is undeniable. The Warriors made a financial commitment to him for a reason and consequently, by giving him that kind of money (especially when they didn't give it to such an iconic player like BD), the Warriors have set themselves up to be in the current situation where Ellis may feel the authority to try to dictate the draft, or more accurately from Ellis' perspective, just do his thing and be the unequivocal leader of the team. I can't fault him for that, and neither can the front office. As a result, if Ellis is kept, he should be appeased and they should do everything they can to make him happy. It's bad business to pay people a lot of money and then hold their mistakes over them so that they cannot perform well. The Warriors should be trying to get 5 good remaining years out of the contract and if that means drafting Jordan Hill, or even Brandon Jennings (who I think Nelly perceives as a pass first point guard), then I'm ok with that strategy.
But....rather than settling on Hill or a point guard we don't want as much, why not at least consider shopping Ellis to pick up a legit 4 while clearing room to draft the playmaking point guard we seem to covet?
Suspicion is that the Hawks are shopping Josh Smith, and from spending some time recently in Atlanta, it is general sentiment that Smith will be gone. People hate him in Atlanta and I'm not sure if it's warranted. They looooove Al Horford. Smith also did have lows in blocks and steals this past year, but his lows are still huge (1.3 steals, 1.6 blocks). His recent career averages are about 1.0 more in each category, so ridiculously productive. The Hawks are still shopping him.
Smith could really get out and run in the Warriors system. Imagine a 3, 4, 5 consisting of Randolph, Smith, and Biedrins. Very strong. Not bruising, but very effective in terms of rebounds and blocks. Perfect Nellyball front line.
Assuming that our draft strategy would then focus to a playmaking point guard, I'd imagine our board at 7 would look like this: Curry, Flynn. I know Curry didn't work out for Golden State, but Ellis leaving takes away the drama and Curry is a scorer, something we'd need to fill the Ellis void. Flynn would also very nicely fit under this category. Athletically, a Flynn, Randloph, Smith combo would be a devastating match-up for opponents.
The Hawks, conversely, would be looking to fill Smith's void in the draft with pikc #19. My guess is that they would target James Johnson from Wake Forest. He's be a great complement alongside Al Horford.
So here are the 9-man rotations when the dust settles:
Dubs - Jonny Flynn, Stephen Jackson, Anthony Randolph, Josh Smith, Andris Biedrins
Corey Maggette, Kelenna Azubuike, Ronny Turiaf, Anthony Morrow
Hawks - Monta Ellis, Joe Johnson, Marvin Williams, James Johnson, Al Horford
Mike Bibby, Ronald Murray, Zaza Pachulia, Maurice Evans
Is this possible? I say yes, it is possible.

There’s a problem with that. Between Smith, Randolph and Biedrins, no one can hit a shot outside of about 10 feet.

Josh Smith isn’t a good 3point shooter, but he does have respectable range out to the arc.
Anthony Randolph isn’t a good jumpshooter either, but he has shown respectable range out to the elbow at least.

Yes, I definitely exaggerated a little bit.

NO
monta is a beast.
every season other than when he got injured (what were the odds of something like that happening?) he has improved his game dramatically…people will forget about this past season once the next season starts and regret even considering losing ellis for any non-elite player.
monta/AR/morrow are our future.

no on morrow
and you act like monta got injured playing basketball as if it were part of the game. sorry it was his fault and dont say what are the odds of that happening as if its expected to get injured under those circumstances

He just did. Though his point, I believe, is that it was unexpected: that riding a moped does not carry a huge risk of injury; and that a moped-related ankle injury, unlike a chronic knee or back condition, is not likely to recur.
Seems like a pretty clear, coherent point to me. I can’t say the same for yours. Did you have a point? What exactly did you mean by “no on Morrow”?

Do it
myself and a friend of mine we’re talking about how good Smith would be on the W’s since last season. Who cares about Ellis…yes he’ll be solid, but we are not going anywhere with him. He’s Iverson 2.0. All we hear is how he wants to be the leader, how he shouldnt be responsible for his moped accident…I mean, really..how far are we going to get with a small, slight tweener guard who cant play D, cant shoot a 3 but is getting paid for his mid range shot?? Let him go…Versatile forwards are more productive and can be better utilized than short thin combo guards
so much for Montas the future of the dubs
lol hes on every end of a Warriors trade rumor

WE DEMAND IMPROVEMENT!
while it is interesting...
i see two fundamental problems with it:
1) we lose monta ellis
2) we get josh smith
Haha.
+1.

DO IT
Sorry, Monta Ellis isn’t the superstar or savior we all wish he was.
Even at his absolute best, he’s still a huge liability on defense (can’t guard point guards or shooting guards). His deficiencies are just too much to compensate for. C’mon.. so we can only pair him up with a true PG, who’s also big enough to guard SG’s, who is also a good 3pt shooter. Last time I checked, Magic Johnson retired back in 1996. He was the last guy fit enough for the job, and there won’t be another Magic for awhile.
Smith, Randolph, and Biedrins patrolling the paint and inhaling rebounds everywhere would be AMAZING.

josh smith sucks
anyone watching the playoffs this year knows hes a whining little girl who doesnt have a jumpshot. no thank you!
yup
a super athletic PF who, in the past 3 years has averaged 16 points, 1.5 steals, 3 blocks, and 8 boards while shooting over 45% from the field definitely sucks

like i said
all you have to do is watch him play to know he’s only average. every time he touches the ball on offense the atlanta fans boo him. he’s that bad.
45% isn’t that great from a PF….its not terrible, but its not great. I haven’t looked, but I’m guessing his TS% is below average.

51.4%. i’m not sure what average is for a big, but i thought jae said something about 54% being a good starting point for discussions of average TS%
heart of a champion, will of the warrior.
His rebounding is crappy too: 7.2 in 35 minutes per game last season.
Rebounding and being efficient from the floor are probably the two most important traits in a PF. JSmith is below average at both.
On the bright side, if he came here he’d have the distinction of being the 4th best left-handed bigman on a crappy team. Something to tell the grandkids.

Perhaps I didn’t detect the cynicism, but in case you were serious…
8 rebounds in 36 minutes from your power forward is not great. It’s not terrible, but it’s not great. It’s worse than what Wright gave us per minute and critique #1 of Wright has been that he isn’t a very strong rebounder. 45% from the floor for a power forward is terrible. It’s an acceptable rate for a 2/3 where a lot of the shots are 3’s, but for a PF, it’s real, real substandard. He is below average in scoring efficiency. His points take more possessions than the average player to get. His FG% and scoring efficiency is going in the right direction; he improved last year, but overall, he’s still taking more shots than his skill dictates he should.
There are things that Smith does well, and he can be exciting to watch, but he’s ridiculously overrated if you expect him to come in and be a star.
BUT....
Can we get anything better for Monta? I don’t think so.
-I’d take that deal and
-draft a point guard,
-have Randolph shooting jumpers till he can’t raise his arms all summer.
-trade for Baron, or use midlevel on a vet.
Leaves us with
pg-Baron or vet
sg- Jackson, Morrow and Bellinelli
sf-Randolph, Azubuike
pf-J Smith, B wright
C-Beidrins and Turiaf
Not a bad Squad at all!!!
I left of Maggette and Crawford and our draft pick, figured they’d be gone as parts of the trade.
HA!
I left of Maggette and Crawford and our draft pick, figured they’d be gone as parts of the trade.
And the Hawks would be the suckers to take them both off our hands? Why would ATL want a logjam at the 2/3 like we got now? (add to that mix Joe Johnson, Flip Murray, Marvin Williams, Mo Evans) After all the negatives that easbayglory pointed out in reference to Josh Smith, ie- block numbers down, everyone hates him in ATL, etc. what’s so appealing about another malcontent joining the squad? Oh yeah, and bring back Baron, the guy who skipped town ’cause he was pissed at the organization for not putting up the contract he wanted….
IMO, the Dubs need to make Monta happy and comfortable, best way to do that is to WIN. Best way to WIN is to put quality pieces/role players around Monta. Don’t bring in players already pissed off about something else, They got plenty of time to get frustrated and pissed off playing for Cohan and Rowell.
Chris Cohan- YOU'RE FIRED!
hmm
dont think he was saying that crawford and maggette would be on atlanta. Ellis isnt in the lineup, therefore he went to atlanta for smith. You can safely assume Maggette would be sent out for Baron. I dont know where the hell Crawford would go though.
The fact that all of Smith’s numbers are down are probably one of the reason’s he’s on the block. If he had some extraordinary year last season then there would probably be no way to get our hands on him. Besides, even though last year was his worst in the past 3 seasons, he still put up solid numbers. The fact that “everyone hates him in ATL” is pretty irrelevant. Last time I checked, most people in New Orleans weren’t too pleased with Baron, but that worked out pretty well for us.
Is it a bit of a gamble? Sure, of coarse it is. If it was a sure thing then the Hawks would not even think of trading this guy. But he plays for a coach he hates, in a city that doesnt like him and experienced a little drop in his otherwise allstar type numbers. In my opinion this would be an excellent time to try and pry away a guy with his crazy athleticism and skill. As for “another malcontent joining the squad”….well, he would be the only malcontent if we traded Monta for him…can have “another malcontent” if we trade one for the other
Why
do you want to trade Monta???. He is our future alongside with Morrow, AR, and Beans

Nope
I wouldn’t trade Ellis unless I could get a dominate big or a guard with equal production potential such as OJ mayo.
7 million reason we would never do this deal
Yes, Josh Smith has trade kicker that immediately pays him 7 million addition dollars once he’s traded.
A nearly $7 million trade kicker in Josh Smith’s contract makes it very unlikely that he’ll be moved by the Hawks this summer.
In addition to the trade kicker, which would need to be paid to him immediately, the Hawks didn’t sign him until August, meaning it would be very difficult to trade him before August of this year without some crazy rearrangements of the numbers to make it work. But in today’s economy, the $7 million hit owners would have to take should be enough to keep Smith in Atlanta for the foreseeable future. – Rotoworld.com
A Sonics fan without a team.. Though I'm auditioning GS Warriors this season.
NO!!!
I am sorry but our PPG will probably AVG about 90-95. Yea we might have a bit better defence, but not good enough for me.
*I say keep Monte and Continue to build around him, even if a True PG will piss him off! Its about what makes the team better not Making Monte feel better sacrificing the Teams future.
Gotta love the Bay Area drama ;)
All things being equal, I think I would pass on this trade, but considering Ellis’ injury, attitude and general discontentedness I would give it some serious thought. Smith certainly has his deficiencies, but who knows if Monta Ellis will ever fully return to his 2007-08 form, or whether he will do it for the Warriors or another team.
Instead of asking us
go to Atlanta’s blog and see what they got to say about this trade.
