Thabeet dropping, and a second NYK-GSW trade?

First - One of the players I'd hoped we might snag LAST year was Thabeet, but he opted not to enter the draft. Early on this year he was projected to be the 2nd or 3rd player picked, but he's fallen on many boards.

Draftexpress:

# 01. Clippers - Blake Griffin
# 02. Grizzlies - Ricky Rubio
# 03. Thunder - James Harden
# 04. Kings - Jrue Holiday
# 05. Wizards - Hasheem Thabeet
# 06. Timberwolves - Tyreke Evans
# 07. Warriors - Brandon Jennings
# 08. Knicks - Stephen Curry
# 09. Raptors - Jordan Hill
# 10. Bucks - Jonny Flynn
# 11. Nets - DeMar DeRozan
# 12. Bobcats - Earl Clark
# 13. Pacers - Ty Lawson
# 14. Suns - DeJuan Blair

Why does this matter?

Star-divide

The Washington Post reported that the Wizards are re-evaluating whether to take Hill at 5:

# 05. Wizards - Hasheem Thabeet or Jordan Hill?

If Washington snagged Hill, Thabeet could fall further. Would Minn. pass on him for Evans, or Curry?

Could Thabeet fall to #7?

Last year we had no backup C and Thabeet would have been a more perfect fit to our need for a shot-blocking big man, while now we have Turiaf. But if Thabeet were to fall to #7 would you pass on that?

Second - NYK is pretty high on Curry, Jennings, and is thinking about Hill as well. If Hill and Thabeet were gone at #7, and we were sitting there with a choice of the rest, we could swap picks with NYK and gain something small in return - say a another pick in this draft or the future and still end up with Jennings or Curry, or we could think bigger.

Would any of you consider trading our #7 to NYK?! From NY's point of view, they'd have back-to-back picks #7-8 and might be able to reshape their backcourt in one fell swoop. I think they'd have to at least consider it.

What would you want from the Knicks? Considering all their moves in the past year have been about manuevering for cap space next summer, I doubt that they'd take on one of our big contracts. But this is an example when we might be able to take advantage of another team's desire to clear capspace and pick off a quality player.

So, would you make a deal trading the #7 for their young PF David Lee? Some one else? Or is the chance to gamble on Jennings too tempting to pass on for an established player?

If Hasheem is there we definately should snag him

I have him rated in the top 3.

Brandon Jennings, Ty Lawson, or Tyreke Evans. A Warrior in 09.
With the 6th Pick in the 2009 MLB Draft, the SF Giants pick Donovan Tate.

Ellis

Maggette
Randolph
Bosh

regardless of who was packaged with Andris to make it work, that’d be a roster to be reckoned with in the WC, providing we can re-sign Bosh

NO

not with mags at the 3.

if we can somehow get odom or prince we’d be way better off!

idk how we could do this…but if our lineup was:

ellis

prince or odom
randolph
bosh

wow…now THATS a team…and still have turiaf/morrow/buki/jennings….damn….

Ellis

That lineup would give a LOT of mismatches.

I think there’s a slight chance that Thabeet falls to the seventh pick:

2.) Memphis Grizzlies — Ricky Rubio, PG/Spain
3.) Oklahoma City Thunder — James Harden, SG/Arizona State
4.) Sacramento Kings — Jrue Holiday, PG/UCLA
5.) Washington Wizards — Stephen Curry, PG/Davidson
6.) Minnesota Timberwolves — Tyreke Evans, PG/Memphis

If that scenario were to occur, which is basically highly doubtful, Thabeet could slip.

that would be hilarious if Holiday and Curry get drafted before Thabeet. That would be hilarious on Heyward-Bey-before-Crabtree level proportions.

"We Deserve"

by YaHeard on Jun 20, 2009 3:42 PM PDT up reply actions

Well, no, because Curry and Holiday play different positions compared to Thabeet while Heyward-Bey and Crabtee both play wide receiver.

Secondly, the Raiders chose the player they felt was best for their system. Heyward-Bey fits the new vertical passing game that will be implemented this season taking advantage of the speed of Heyward-Bey and Johnnie Lee Higgins and the height of Chaz Schilens. Heyward-Bey played in a pro style offense at Maryland where he faced more than one defender. Crabtree played in a spread offense. He dealt with single coverage and played in a conference in which they throw the ball 60 times a day. Heyward-Bey didn’t have the luxury of all that great talent around him.

The Ultimate Opportunist

by Rated-R Superstar on Jun 20, 2009 3:47 PM PDT up reply actions

Your first line was going to earn you a rec…….. and then I saw that you got into Al Davis’ Kook-Aid stash. So are they going to take advantage of Heyward-Bey’s speed the same way they took advantage of James Jett’s speed? or Rocket Ismail’s speed? or Randy Moss’ speed? The Raiders have been running that offense where they try to take advantage of speed on the edges for decades now and countless speedy receivers have passed through Oakland, and some of them could even catch footballs, but none of those guys really did very much. I don’t anticipate Darius Heyward-Bey breaking that trend.

Thabeet is #2 on Minny's board

I could see OKC passing on him for Harden, and then the Kings/Wizards passing on him. But he doesn’t fall passed #6.

by Bob on Jun 20, 2009 6:03 PM PDT reply actions

since you know, can you tell us what the rest of Minny’s board looks like? ; )

Thing A

by sam23 on Jun 20, 2009 6:15 PM PDT up reply actions

all you got to do is read the Pioneer Press

or StarTribune. The new GM has made no secret of his desires for a shotblocking center to move AL to PF. If Thabeet falls to #6 they take him with 4mins:50 secs left on the timer. A Minny/Memphis swap is more likely.

by Bob on Jun 20, 2009 6:36 PM PDT up reply actions

Then their current regime is as dumb as their previous one.

Kevin Love is already one of the best rebounders in the NBA. He had a sub-par (by his standards, anyway) shooting year last year, but I expect him to improve on his FG% drastically in the future. He’s already one of the best FT shooting bigs in the NBA. He’s the real reason I still feel that the Wolves got the best of that trade, despite the love-fest for OJ Mayo after his rookie season.

by markdash on Jun 20, 2009 7:08 PM PDT up reply actions

The latest article says...

“He has pointedly told season-ticket holders and media members alike that Al Jefferson — the prized centerpiece of McHale’s rebuilding attempt — is the second-best player on an NBA title contender and Kevin Love is a fourth piece as well as a young talent unlikely to reach All-Star level.”

http://www.startribune.com/sports/wolves/48644212.html

It doesn’t sound like he’s too high on Kevin Love. Is he stupid? Probably.

by Bob on Jun 20, 2009 9:12 PM PDT up reply actions

I don’t necessarily disagree with that. I think he’s selling Love a bit short, but I also don’t think Al Jefferson is the kind of player who will typically lead a team to a title. I don’t know what their new GM sees in Thabeet (aside from “prototypical center,” AKA “tall guy”) but they certainly don’t need to improve inside. Maybe another piece with size would be good, but they really need help on the wings/backcourt.

um….turiaf was the best back up C in the league – so i think we had one.

W’s need the return of BD (maggette or Jack+ pick) and a Boozer type 4.

by joegiant on Jun 20, 2009 8:58 PM PDT reply actions

Turiaf plays more like a jumpshooting, weakside-shotblocking power forward. I know we already have Wright and Randolph, but Turiaf is only a center under Don Nelson’s system. I don’t remember him ever playing center under Phil Jackson.

Hasheem Thabeet is a real center. And for that reason, I’m afraid Don Nelson wouldn’t give him any PT.

"We Deserve"

by YaHeard on Jun 20, 2009 10:09 PM PDT up reply actions

Turiaf did play center under Jackson. He was the back up C before Pau came & before Bynum returned – Bynum’s return cut out any minutes for Ronny, thus why he signed with the W’s and why the Lakers didn’t match. in 07-08, he played 64.9% of his minutes at center (82games).

Nelson gave Shaq & Zo minutes for Dream Team II (& rode them to the gold medal), i’m sure if Thabeet can play, he’d get minutes.

by markdash on Jun 21, 2009 7:29 PM PDT up reply actions

Isn’t Thabeet supposed to be a project guy, since he doesn’t have that much experience playing? If we draft him, we have to make sure we keep Biedrins for a couple years, till Thabeet learns the game.

And if we traded for Bosh, well, he’s better suited for PF than at C. And I know everyone thinks Randolph would be great as a PF, but I think he’s still too thin to bang with the bigger PF’s in the league, and could end up getting hurt playing every day like that. I think he’s quick enough to play SF in this league.

I could see this lineup being pretty effective if we traded for Bosh or not, and drafted Thabeet:

Monta
Jackson
Randolph
Bosh
Thabeet/Turiaf

Or if there was no trade:
Monta
Jackson
Randolph
Biedrins
Thabeet/Turiaf

With this lineup, could Charles Barkley still call them a team of Midgets?

Also, if we don’t draft Thabeet, I’m perfectly fine with having this lineup:

Monta
Jackson
Randolph
Biedrins
Turiaf
- I really like how the team played last year when both Turiaf and Biedrins were playing together.
