Around SBN: The 2009-2010 Card Chronicle Big East basketball preview

Here's a very interesting transcription of the Q&A with Warriors GM Larry Riley which was conducted earlier today. Head coach Don Nelson sneaks in for a bit too.

I must say Riley sounds far more savvy and knowledgeable than former Warriors front office man Chris Mullin ever did in these interviews. Listening to Mullin interviews was painfully frustrating. He sounded like he was way in over his head.

nelson staying mum is a good thing

it makes the press use riley as the main source, making it easier for the new g.m., and it minimizes the chances the media has to kvetch about nelson’s perceived dissembling.

the g.m.‘s would be remiss in their jobs leading up to the draft if they didn’t try to bluff and mislead each other. i hope what riley has said is intended to encourage the 2-6 ranked teams to draft thabeet and hill, making evans or curry available at seven. whether they’re traded or retained the team probably addresses some needs.

he seems to really like Curry

and I for one think thats a good thing

riley was probably straight with his curry assessments

because he’s not likely to influence the teams that already like him. he was willing to even share his view that curry is more a lead guard than 2-guard, but again that perception is shared by others. if curry can play nba-level ball, he’ll be fine in the same line up with ellis, maybe not against every match up or for most of the game, but offensively they’re quite complementary. two of the principal requirements for the ‘other’ guard with ellis are playing intelligently and playing good d.

good interview, i liked what riley had to say and liked that nelson didn’t say anything. i suppose we’ll find out if it means anything come the start of next season. here’s hoping that draft day goes well…

and atma, would you mind making the link to the article itself, and not the comments? it’s not so bad, but just out of laziness, i’d prefer to not need to scroll up to the top to read it.

heart of a champion, will of the warrior.

Good call. Thanks for pointing that out.

nelson did say something

in reference to ellis, ‘I don’t think he could be a full-time point guard…the approach is more than just to score the ball.
’You’ve got to take care of you teammates a little bit more and have a feel for that as a player.’ this is nelson’s diplomatic way of saying, ‘me’ tends to freeze the other guys out.

back to riley, he emphasized the priorities on offense to improving the running game and reducing turnovers, and that he projected that curry would grow into a ‘low-turnover player…he has a savvy, a certain understanding about the game.’
