RUMOR: Warriors and Blazers tried to trade for Wizards swingman Caron Butler

Jump like "Tough Juice" in this pic for the 4-1-1.
Michael Lee over at the Washington Post has the details and more in Wizards Rebuffing Inquiries for Butler:
About half of the teams in the league have spoken with the Wizards, according to a league source, and most of those discussions have revolved around the draft choice. Some teams, though, have also asked about the availability of the Wizards' top players, with most focusing on Caron Butler.
Multiple sources have confirmed that the Wizards engaged in conversations with the Phoenix Suns about acquiring all-star forward Amare Stoudemire last month, but the talks stalled when the Suns demanded Butler. Another league source added that Golden State and Portland have also attempted to land Butler, but Grunfeld hasn't budged.
I must I say I am a Caron Butler fan. I remember back on Draft Day 2002 when he slipped to the #10 spot. There were questions about his character and what not. Seven years later I don't think there's really any doubt that he should've gone much higher in that draft. Jay Williams, Mike Dunleavy Jr. Nikoloz Tskitishvili, Dajuan Wagner, and Chris Wilcox all went ahead of him. Think those teams would like to have an All-Star caliber swingman who's good for close to 20-7-5 plus 2 thefts when healthy? I also want to highlight that (as far as I can tell from the Left Coast) Butler has been a model citizen. Give this man his props.
I'd be willing to pretty much trade anyone not named Rudolph, Moped, or Andris to bring Butler to the Bay. I'm a sucker for some irrational Anthony Randolph hype right now and I don't see that stopping till opening night when the Warriors lose by 20. I'd be perfectly happy to see Ellis shipped out in a trade for an All-Star, but I fear Butler's best days are behind him and Monta shouldn't be sold off the lot when his value is so low (all his own doing of course). I'd rather have Butler than Biedrins if I was picking players for my team, but I have very little faith that the Warriors can easily replace the lost glasswork in the middle. Warrior-killer Marcin Gortat might be available this offseason though.
Make sure to head over to Bullets Forever to see what some real deal Washington Warriors insiders think Butler and the Bullets. They drink Tough Juice like we sip Hyphy Juice.

I'd love this trade
but I really don’t see any realistic trade to land him with all of our big contracts. I’m assuming they were looking to shed cap space. Possibly Azubuike, Wright and #7 for Butler? I’d do it in a heartbeat.

uh, WHAT trade was proposed?
without knowing who/what was discussed going from GSW to Wash, there’s not much to evaluate – GSW should be calling around the league looking for talent, and every other GM is likely going to ask about Randolph. Beyond that, what’s the rumor? At least Capt Jack is proposing something …

Unless we get rid of the swingmen we already have, I don’t see how getting another swingman would benefit the Warriors.

It would benefit us because he’s better than any of the ones we have and they could spend more time on the bench where they can’t do as much to damage our chances of winning.

Yeah, I know he’s better, I just see needs elsewhere… but those guys would get pretty regular playing time, I mean, when was the last time Butler played a full season?

correction..
should have read “because he’s A LOT better than any of the ones we have…”
There's a party in my mind.
And I wish that I was there.

yes!
But really without trading our 3 players of the future i don’t think its possible.
The only way we get him is to send him multiple players plus draft picks… i dont see that happening either.
Gotta love the Bay Area drama ;)

Caron Butler is pretty awesome. I agree there isn’t really a deal that makes much sense for both sides but I’m glad to hear we at least inquired about a really, really good player that was rumored to be available.

Weird.
Literally yesterday while surfing past a blurb about how the Wiz are looking to deal their draft pick, I thought to myself, “man, we should really go hard after Caron Butler…”
I agree with Atma: anyone but Rudolph, AB, and Monta. Heck, I’d even consider Monta straight up (salaries match) if we really like Flynn, Curry, or Jennings (or can figure how to trade up for Rubio). Hard to imagine Monta would appeal to the Wiz though, unless they’re really concerned about Gilbert’s long-term health.
Curry
Jackson
Butler
Randolph
Biedrins

Morrow, KAz, Turiaf, Wright, Marco
No idea what we do with Maggs and Craw … can’t we just wish them to a parallel universe or something?

-10000
Curry<Monta by a LOT. It isn’t even close. Curry is a college kid who excelled against sub-par competition but couldn’t even get his team to the NCAA Tournament. Monta is a next-level NBA talent. Do you really think Curry would be ready to lead this team from jumpstreet? Ugh. The Monta haters need to relax. Unless we are getting a bona fide difference-making All-Star in return, there is zero reason to trade him.
Sittin in my scraper watchin Oakland goin wild, ta-dow!

Yeah
You might be right. I think Curry has a shot to be better than Monta ( he already has much deeper range on his J and appears to have better court vision), but I don’t think it’s better than 50/50. I just think that upgrading from Maggs/Buike to an Top 10 NBA small forward might be worth the risk. Obviously, if we could get them to bite at something like Maggs + Buike + #7 instead, I’d prefer that.
Monta
Jack
Butler
Randolph
Biedrins

Morrow, Turiaf, Wright, Marco, Crawdaddy

Wow
that is the best looking starting five for the Warriors since the Playoffs of 07, even better.
But the sad thing is.. I don’t think Monta wants to be a Warrior for too long.
Hope it’s just rumors JUST LIKE when Kobe was rumored to leave LA for Chicago, remember?
Hopefully it’s that same situation with Monta.
Hate to see Buike go, and we still would have Crawford.

build around randolph
butler is too old for an AR led championship team.

Butler just turned 29 — not that old. And his contract ends in two years, so he can be readily converted into another piece for the “AR led championship team,” if so desired.
In the meantime, you might consider patenting the phrase “AR led championship team.” ;-P

Butler is a improved Jackson...and less violent too
but Im tellin you AR probably wont be a superstar but 20/10 will be easy for him!

sigh
Harrington’s and Jackson’s expiring contracts would’ve been GREAT to have right now. The Wizards are one of those losing franchises that’s already heavily into the luxury tax that would love to unload some of their big contracts.
Too bad we don’t have the right pieces to make a trade like this.

butler the beast
i love butler’s game. hes tough, has alot of skill and is a killer on the court like baron was. but the only salaries that might match up to his that i would consider trading are magette, crawford and sjax all of which would probably require us to include bwright. still wont be enough for butler though. AR is 20 and probably needs 2 years min to be an all-star, so id rather trade for players coming up, AB and or ME will be enough veteran leadership on the eventual ‘ARLCT’
