NEWS: Richard Jefferson traded to the Spurs
Story here.
Basically, the Bucks shed payroll and the Spurs go deep into the luxury tax to add another scorer to help out ol' Timmy.
My question is this: If the Spurs were looking to add an overpaid/mediocre (yet high scoring) player, why didn't the Warriors offer up either Corey Maggette or Stephen Jackson?
The Bucks are in nearly the same situation as the Warriors: a non-playoff calibur team with a large unwarranted payroll. Why aren't we trying to make moves like this?

Wow
nice move by the Bucks. It really does suck it couldn’t have been Maggette or Jack and it puts a big dent in our hopes for Sessions or Charlie V.

Over/Under?
I don’t think there’s a way to apply that to this scenario.

i think you mean the odds
and I’d say about 85% that he resigns with the Spurs.

another implication here is that we have a new contender in the gortat sweepstakes. the spurs should offer him their mle and hope that he solidifies their presently lacking situation in the post. tim duncan can’t play pf and c and back himself up at both positions.

wow
Parker, Ginobili, Jefferson, Duncan, Gortat would be a pretty impressive starting lineup. The definitely do need to make a big push at some big man with their MLE, and I’m guessing they’ll look for a big that can contribute immediately with the 37th pick too. Gortat or ’Sheed could be good MLE targets. With Hill, Mason, Finley, Udoka and Bonner off the bench they look pretty tough for at least one more run at it.

until they grab another big man, i can’t call this a victory for the spurs. that said, the more i think about it, the more i think they will. sheed would be interesting and possibly cheaper than gortat, which would leave some room for them to maybe grab another piece on the cheap too. i’m sure there’s a scrappy d-leaguer or two who would love to sign up for $1M a year to play for the spurs and fill a position of need (backup point guard? another big? it all depends on who they draft).

thiago splitter
best rights held player abroad…. 7-0 center. they are trying to get him over.

getting him over has been a challenge thus far. i think he can make a lot more in europe than he can on a rookie deal in the states.

Gortat is still restricted and the Spurs still cannot offer more than the MLE. I’m not sure how this changes things vis a vis Gortat at all.
There’s a strong possibility that Oberto and Bowen will be back in San Antonio. The move really only saves Milwaukee space under the tax to keep Charlie V. and/or Sessions if Oberto and Bowen are let go for their partial guarantees.

i think that san antonio becomes very likely to offer gortat their MLE. i wasn’t saying that they would offer more, but if the magic don’t want to pay that much, the spurs are a nice landing spot for him.

Maybe not, but healthy core (Duncan, Parker, Ginobili) + Richard J might.

I really think the Spurs could have done better than this trade.
They could’ve packaged Tony Parker + expirings for someone as good as Lamar Odom or AK47, someone who defends and passes well and fits more into their system.
Or they could’ve packaged Ginobili + expirings and gotten a star like Chris Bosh.
Richard Jefferson just doesn’t fit well with that team, kinda like how Drew Gooden didn’t do anything for them.

He plays D, shoots, and can score in addition to shooting when he’s open. So he does everything Bowen does, and more. Your examples have them really mortgaging their future off to try to win with Duncan. There’s no way they trade Parker. Ginobili, maybe, but they have a good core now so why trade him? When he’s healthy he’s a very good player.

by tafkasam on Jun 23, 2009 2:58 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs

My question is this: If the Spurs were looking to add an overpaid/mediocre (yet high scoring) player, why didn’t the Warriors offer up either Corey Maggette or Stephen Jackson?
I’m sure Jack hasn’t come up, as he seems untouchable here for some inexplicable reason, but I wouldn’t be at all surprised if the Warriors did talk to the Spurs about Maggette recently, as a trade was at least floated around the deadline. But I think Jefferson would be more appealing to them than Maggette, as they need wings who can shoot the 3, which Maggette, has only done spottily of late.

Absolute freaking STEAL
for San Antonio. Parker is their star and is the youngest and relatively the healthiest of their 3 core players. No way they’re dealing him. You consider starting Parker, Ginobli, Jefferson and Duncan, you have to put them up there with LA as favorites to come out of the West next season. They just need to address the PF position and they’re serious contenders.
Maggette for that same combo could’ve been suggested but Jefferson does something that Maggette doesn’t. Play defense. Jackson’s contract was even three years longer.
You consider the fact that Bowen and Thomas have partially guaranteed deals and will probably be bought out and go back to San Antonio anyway. Then you have Roger Mason and Matt Bonner’s expiring deals? Couple that with the fact that you might have a veteran big who wants to saddle up in S.A. for the mid-level.
PG: Parker, SG: Ginobli, SF: Jefferson, PF: Rasheed Wallace, C: Duncan
Just as Kawakami said…players WANT to play for San Antonio.

Just to mention a few that could fit there:
UFA: Chris Andersen, Dahntay Jones, Ime Udoka could resign there, Antonio McDyess, Keith Bogans, Chris Wilcox, Grant Hill, Shawn Marion…
I wouldn’t be surprised if San Antonio made even more moves.

Hope he hadn’t hopped on a plane for Milwaukee just yet.

Would YOU rather than Jackson or Maggs than Jefferson?
Maggs is too much of a black hole on offense, and with Jackson you never know who’s going to show up.
Jefferson signed a huge contract, but it was a six year deal signed in 2004. Which means it’s got, what one or two more years on it? Again – simply not in the same ballpark as Maggs or Jackson.

Maggs and Jackson are both better than Jefferson...as one man,but as a team Jefferson is better, not that much though.
