Minnesota acquires 5th pick in exchange for Randy Foye

The Washington Wizards have acquired Minnesota Timberwolves guards Randy Foye(notes) and Mike Miller(notes) for Etan Thomas(notes), Oleksiy Pecherov(notes) and Darius Songaila and the fifth pick in Thursday’s NBA draft, a league executive with knowledge of the deal told Yahoo! Sports.

===================================================================================

This sucks. This probably ensures Tyreke Evans isn't there by 7. I'm assuming Minny packages 5 and 6 to thrifty Memphis for #2 which equates to Rubio.

2- Minny- Rubio

3- OKC- Thabeet

4- Sac- Jrue Holiday

5- Memphis- Jordan Hill

6- Memphis

Memphis, being semi-loaded with guards with Conley, Gay, Mayo would probably add Jordan Hill to the mix with one of their first rounders. This would mean their other pick?

Tyreke Evans?

The Wizards have now rounded out their lineup with the solid Mike Miller coming off the bench and they’ll shed over $7 million after this year after they let him walk.

The Timberwolves, if they don’t trade up to grab the second pick, will probably go with Stephen Curry and James Harden.

Things just got that much more interesting now.

Can this Happen

1. Blake
2. Hasheem
3. Rubio
4. Tyreke or Jonny Flynn
5. Jordan Hill
6. Curry
7. Harden

1.Blake 2. Hasheem 3. Rubio 4. Flynn 5. Harden 6. Tyreke 7. Curry 8. Brandon Jennings 9. DeMar DeRozen 10. Jordan Hill (that is how the top 10 will play out) OR 1. Blake 2. Hasheem 3. Rubio 4. Tyreke 5. Harden 6. Curry 7. Jennings 8. Flynn
9. DeRozen 10. Jordan Hill

Who has what pick? I don’t think the Timberwolves are even considering Jordan Hill since they have Kevin Love and Al Jefferson. The Timberwolves would definitely gobble up both Stephen Curry and James Harden if they’re available. Those are their starting guards this upcoming season if that’s the case.

That'll probably depend on the Kings and Minnesota's big boards.

I think the Kings will go with Tyreke personally. Flynn dropping out of the top 7.

I think the Kings would rather go with upside and height with there pick and Evans fits their bill perfectly. Flynn would be an immediate help but i dont the Kings see theirselves being a playoff contender.

Early word is actually that they won’t try to trade up — that’s from Andy Katz.

Yeah, my initial reaction was that this makes us likelier to draft Jordan Hill, but actually I’m not sure. The Wolves are almost definitely gonna go guard/guard, with some combo of Evans, Harden, Rubio and Curry. But I don’t think they’d take Rubio and Curry… just seems like an overly small tandem.

For those of us who are rooting for Curry, I think this trade is actually good news. The team that was most likely to take Curry if the traded up was the Knicks, and now they’re out in the cold. He’s still not likely to last till seven, but I think it could happen, depending on how Minnesota wants to align their backcourt.

by onlxn on Jun 23, 2009 4:55 PM PDT up reply actions

i think he ends up with the wolves. two picks and they seem to love the guy. he’s a great fit with jefferson and love because they need a shooter and bassy telfair is their point guard right now. if the wolves don’t trade up, they take curry.

by cap'n hack on Jun 23, 2009 4:58 PM PDT up reply actions

I think so as well.

I think if the Kings pass on Tyreke, they could go with Harden and Evans with the consecutive picks. This is contingent on whether or not they think Evans can play PG or not. If not they could go Curry as well. Either way I thin they’ll get the players they want.

That means that I believe Hill will be the pick at 7. Again, one spot away from the player we really want.

Essentially, we need the Kings to reach for Jrue Holliday. If they do that, and the Wolves’ interest in Evans is real, one of Harden, Curry or Rubio falls to us. If the Kings don’t screw up, we’re probably stuck with Hill.

by LighTz707OuT on Jun 23, 2009 4:53 PM PDT reply actions

It may not take the fifth and the sixth overall pick to grab the second overall pick. Minnesota has four picks in the first round alone. They could package the fifth overall pick and the 18th overall pick for the second overall pick. Minnesota could then draft Rubio second, Curry or Harden fifth and the Memphis would take Hill sixth. James Harden or Stephen Curry would be waiting for us at number seven.

Let’s say that that the Timberwolves trade the fifth overall and the 18th overall picks to the Grizzlies for the second overall pick:

1.) Los Angeles Clippers — Blake Griffin, PF/Oklahoma; Sophomore
2.) Minnesota Timberwolves — Ricky Rubio, PG/Spain; International
3.) Oklahoma City Thunder — Hasheem Thabeet, C/Connecticut; Junior
4.) Sacramento Kings — Tyreke Evans, PG/Memphis; Freshman
5.) Minnesota Timberwolves — Stephen Curry, PG/Davidson; Junior
6.) Memphis Grizzlies — Jordan Hill, PF/Arizona; Junior

If the trade doesn’t happen, I think this will transpire:

1.) Los Angeles Clippers — Blake Griffin, PF/Oklahoma; Sophomore
2.) Memphis Grizzlies — Hasheem Thabeet, C/Connecticut; Junior
3.) Oklahoma City Thunder — James Harden, SG/Arizona State; Sophomore
4.) Sacramento Kings — Ricky Rubio, PG/Spain; International
5.) Minnesota Timberwolves — James Harden, SG/Arizona State; Sophomore
6.) Minneosta Timberwolves — Stephen Curry, PG/Davidson; Junior

Had no idea Minny has 4 now. LOL

4 in the weakest draft in 20-25 years or so.

If they are able to package the picks…wowzers. They’ll be set up nicely.

A recovering Al Jefferson. Etan Thomas is an expiring. Shelden Williams, they probably won’t tender the QO to. They’ll have $15M in contracts next year, with possibly 2 decent first rounders this year…and a BOATLOAD of capspace next season.

They sound like they're taking the KP route.

Gain as many assets and hope you get the guys you target from the beginning. In 06’ KP did it with Aldridge and Roy. If Minny can hit with their two picks in the top of the draft, they could add quality players to their core of Al Jefferson and Kevin Love. A Curry, Harden, Love and Jefferson lineup looks pretty good to me. Add in a Center in 2010, and they’re in business.

I think SF isn't that big of a deal.

Not if they can draft two guys to play the backcourt successfully. They’d then have 4 spots filled with productive players. I doubt they’re a playoff club at all, but put in another high draft pick next year in what’s supposed to be a deep draft, and they’re a team to watch out for…whether they have a hole at the C or SF positions. However this is contingent upon Minnesota A. Keeping the 5th and 6th picks, not to mention their other two 1st round picks. And B. That whomever they pick, they can be a productive player.

PG — Ricky Rubio / Bobby Brown
SG — DeMar DeRozan / 26th overall pick

I don't think Thabeet will fall that far.

I think Minnesota should definitely pick Thabeet up at 6 if he’s there. Then with the 18th you can either go with a SG-or combo guard if they want outside shooting, or package the 18th and their late 1st for another player maybe Earl Clark.

With that being said, Memphis would most likely take Rubio which would lead to Sac into taking Evans. Then Minny would select Thabeet believe it or not because he is a true Center that plays D which would move Big Al to the 4 where hes more of a scorer.

They need to build around Jefferson, like the way SAS built around Duncan. Harden and Curry both have the outside shooting capabilities to open up the low block for Jefferson. Either of them and/or Tyreke Evans is who I could see Minny going with. Thabeet if he falls there to 6, or trade up for Rubio with either the 5th or 6th and the 18th.

Minnesota might go with Curry with the sixth overall pick after packaging the fifth and the 18th overall picks for the second overall pick. If that deal does go through or something like it in which the Timberwolves still have the sixth overall pick, I mean, I don’t know which direction that they’d go in with that pick. I don’t know if they’d take both Rubio and Curry. I’m assuming that Thabeet is going third to the Thunder and that the Kings are going with Evans or Holiday. Then, I’d say that the Grizzlies may go with Harden with the fifth pick despite already having an undersized shooting guard.

I dunno man...

I really don’t think 5 and 18 would be good enough to get Rubio. I think if anything, it’d probably involve Minnesota taking back some bad contracts.

if marco jaric ended up back in a wolves uniform, expect wolves fans everywhere to begin weeping. there’s such a strong hatred for jaric in ‘sota. they dealt cassell and a first rounder for him and that dreadful contract and then finally shed him as part of the love deal. they don’t want him back.

i’d say that the 5 and the 6 actually seems reasonable to get rubio.

I think it's reasonable enough from Memphis' point of view

but I think it might be a bit much from Minnesota.

They effectively dealt Randy Foye and Mike Miller for essentially the 5th pick.

So they’d be dealing Randy Foye, Mike Miller, and #6 for # 2.

the wolves basically have to take two guards they have no choice

they just traded foye and miller and they already have two very good big men in jefferson and love. i think they take evans because they are really high on him and then take curry who they are also very high on. they now have no guards worth being more the a role player. this meens were basically getting jordan hill and that also means brandan wright is also on his way out. if not hill we take jennings cause larry riley said he wants a tall point guard and with no rubio there, flynn barely six feet and evans gone it leaves him and hill.personally i want flynn, you should not judge a player on height. he is a leader, passer first score later type of guy, a good defender, tough, and have you seen the guns on him? he is obviously really strong aswell and riley said he wants some beef but not a short player so where does flynn fit in here?

Tyreke is the best compliment for Monta, hands down. Sadly, he’ll be long gone. Wouldn’t be surprised if OKC shocked everyone and took him at #3. Although I think Harden is most likely (assuming Thabeet is gone; if the big fella is there, I think OKC takes him).

what does evans legitimately do well besides “be tall”? he’s a pretty good rebounder and that’s it. other than that, he was medicore across the board, except for his shooting, which was just awful.

by cap'n hack on Jun 23, 2009 9:44 PM PDT up reply actions

True, his outside shooting isn’t so hot. But Monta can cover that. The bottom line is that we need a big shooting guard if Monta plays the point; otherwise, we’ll get backed down or shot over. We already know Monta is a sieve on D. We need someone who can body up.

Also, it’s about flexibility. Monta has not proven he can play point. Tyreke has as good a chance as being a point as Monta, and gives us a big body too. I just think it’s worth the gamble…

Getting Foye and Miller while losing players that will never be in the rotation isnt bad at all considering Saunders is more of a veteran guy. A line with:

PG: Arenas – James – Crittinton
SG: Foye – Stevenson -Young
SF: Butler – Miller – McGurie
PF: Twan – Blatche
C: Hayward – McGee -

aint bad at all athought they could use a another PF/C just for some assurance, but other than that, i wouldnt be disappointed one bit with the move.

they said all along that they didn’t particularly like the draft and would like to get some veteran help. Considering they get Gil back, add another nice young backcourt option to put with Arenas, and add some very good depth on the wing while still having some pretty good depth on the frontline I don’t think its a bad deal at all. They aren’t huge contenders right now, but they look like a pretty solid lock for one of the 5 playoff spots behind the elite 3 teams out in the East.

I don’t see how Harden slips past the Timberwolves if the Timberwolves hang onto the fifth and sixth overall picks; however, if they do have those picks, I doubt Harden gets past the Thunder assuming the Grizzlies take Thabeet. Then, we’re looking at Rubio going fourth, Curry going fifth and Evans going sixth. We’ll be greeting Jordan Hill at number seven.

Harden + Curry

Would be an absolute haul for Minny. Those are probably my two favorite guys in the draft after Griffin and Rubio. They could be pretty awesome backcourt tandem, and sooner than later.

Anyone listen to Simmons’ most recent BS session with Chad Ford? Both of them seem to agree that Stephen Curry is one of three or four guys in the draft who doesn’t suck. (Not surprisingly, they also both have major hard-ons for Rubio).

Oh, yeah? What if the Timberwolves did get the second overall pick in exchange for the fifth overall pick and the 18th overall pick? Then, they could take Rubio second, the Thunder could go with Thabeet, the Kings could go with the Evans, the Grizzlies could go with Hill and then the Timberwolves could go with Harden. The Bobcats, at 12, are a trade-down candidate. The Timberwolves have the 18th and 28th overall picks. After that trade, the Timberwolves could get their small forward in possibly something like Earl Clark.

The Warriors would then have Stephen Curry fall to them at number seven.

I think too much, maybe?

by misterjennings on Jun 23, 2009 7:15 PM PDT reply actions

IMO we'll be picking one of these three guys.
Stephen Curry – PG, Davidson
The ultimate ‘what if’ in this year’s draft… As in, ‘what if Curry can turn in the type of performances he did at Davidson?’ And ‘what if he can be a pure point guard?’ There are many questions with Curry, but not many doubts about his ability. He’s the smoothest shooter in the draft, a skill he inherited from his ex-NBA father, Dell Curry. Oh, and did I mention that he averaged 28.6pts per game? His size is an issue, but his character isn’t. We’ve seen his stock rise from a project pick in the late teens, to an almost certain top-ten selection. Curry is doing something right. Look out for him.

Jordan Hill – PF, Arizona
This kid spells trouble for opposing defenders. He has a solid frame at the PF position and is a relentless rebounder and shot blocker with a mid-range offense that is plain scary. His silky-smooth 17-foot shot has already drawn him comparisons to the likes of Chris Bosh. Hill is a hard worker who doesn’t tire easily (averaged over 35 mins per game this season), which is good because he’ll need to bulk up his frame to be able to bang with the big boys. If Hill is drafted by a team that needs a PF, look for those heavy minutes to continue in the NBA.

Tyreke Evans – PG, Memphis
Young, aggressive and cocky – that’s Evans. Add to that a great scoring instinct, excellent shot selection and a love for the fast break and you’ve got a guy who’s ready to wow. One of the most versatile picks in this year’s draft, Evans has good size for a point guard (6’-5"), an arsenal of moves around the basket and is a solid defender. That makes him almost irresistible despite having an unorthodox shot (shoots from behind his head) and sometimes making questionable decisions Evans has garnered a lot of attention in the pre-draft work outs. He could be just the impact player teams are looking for.

an ideal situation to not land hill

would be for the wolves to trade their #5 and #18 picks to memphis for the #2.
memphis would pick hill at #5
and the wolves would decide our fate with their pick at #6 (either curry or evans)
leaving us to pick whoever the twolves didnt pick (curry or evans)
id be happy with either of the two to be honest.

Gerald Madkins

by gorillas on Jun 23, 2009 7:56 PM PDT reply actions

the problem with evans is that he doesn’t really have a good skillset to either play the point or the two. he’s either a subpar distributor for a point or an atrocious shooter for a two. he rebounds fairly well, is a decent defender, a decent athlete, a decent passer, and a terrible shooter. i just don’t see what all the hype is about. the best things that people have to say about him is that he’s tall enough to play next to monta, but i don’t care if he’s a 7’ “point guard” if he can’t play the position all that well.

that probably is going to happen… More teams will be drafting need, not BPA. If Thabeet goes 2, than they would be doing it for need. Harden to OK, need. Can we say that most people would think Rubio is the BPA of the three? If Sac doesn’t pick Rubio like they are saying now and draft Flynn or Evans would that make them (Flynn or Evans) the BPA at that time? Wouldn’t the teams be drafting for fit or need instead of BPA

The Ultimate Opportunist

by Rated-R Superstar on Jun 23, 2009 11:32 PM PDT up reply actions

Playing Durant at the 2 was a disaster for them. He was a moderate scorer, abysmal playmaker, and a total disaster on defense. When they moved him back to forward, he became a very good, efficient scoring option and a total disaster on defense, but not any more so against the “stronger” players they feared he’d have problems with than he was on the perimeter. If anything they need to draft a strength and conditioning coach.

Why does everyone say stuff like “they end up with curry and harden, this was a good trade” when they only acquired one of those guys in this trade? They could have taken curry or harden regardless of this deal.

They give up a good player in Foye and the biggest expiring contract in the deal in Mike Miller (who’s also a pretty good player, last season notwithstanding). If they can deal 5+18 for 2, they probably could have deal 6+18 for 2 as well.

I guess I think the 5th pick isn’t worth what they gave up. They probably could have used that large expiring contract (attached to a productive player, a rarity) along with Foye or whatever to acquire a much better asset than the fifth pick in a weak draft.

They couldn’t have taken either Curry or Harden regardless. The Wizards were looking at Curry and Harden is a pretty good candidate to go third.

The Ultimate Opportunist

by Rated-R Superstar on Jun 23, 2009 8:22 PM PDT up reply actions

the main issue is that the wolves don’t consider foye or miller a part of their long term future. foye is a 6th or 7th man; a guard who can play either position, but doesn’t really excel at either. something of a stop-gap if you have a hole at one of the two positions. not a really useful player when your team has holes at the 1,2, and 3.

mike miller’s expiring contract was a nice piece, but don’t forget that they also added 3 backup bigs to play behind jefferson and love and they had absolutely no frontcourt depth before. this removes any need to go shopping for bigs to play behind their frontcourt of the future. the guys they got aren’t good players, but they’re an improvement over shelden williams and jason collins.

it might be a problem if they fail to land any shooters, as this deal completely removes any 3 point threats from the roster, but miller wasn’t shooting often and foye doesn’t have that much range. and they can always go get another shooter in free agency. they have tons of cap space.

you also seem to be ignoring what rated r superstar just pointed out, that curry and harden might have been gone by the 6.

and let’s not forget what flexibility having two top 6 picks and two non-lottery firsts can give them. they can trade the 5 and the 18 to memphis for rubio (plus possible filler on either end) and still have a top 6 pick to work with. that’s a very nice deal for them.

heart of a champion, will of the warrior.

by cap'n hack on Jun 23, 2009 8:26 PM PDT up reply actions

Plus let's not ignore that the Minnesota team sucked last year.

They would go nowhere with Foye + Miller + draft pick regardless. At least getting two draft picks in the lottery makes it less likely you’ll bust out in this crapshoot.

Okay, I think I was a bit hasty about this trade. For some reason I thought Thomas had an extra year on his deal, and even though I looked it up I still had this feeling like it was a terrible trade. I suppose if you say that Thomas’ and Miller’s contracts basically cancel each other out, you end up with Foye for 5, which isn’t bad, I guess. Planning for the future and all that.
