BREAKING NEWS: Warriors near deal with Hawks for Crawford
Just saw this posted on espn a few minutes ago. Looks like we're close to shipping out Jamal Crawford and getting back Speedy Claxton and Acie Law in return.
Here's the link: http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=4284512
This deal is nothing more than a salary dump for the Dubs, but who knows maybe Speedy Claxton can help us get something nice in return again (Baron Davis).
The Hawks look good next year, although defense might be a problem. Wonder what J Craws role will be with the Hawks set to begin contract negotiations with Bibby.

I liked Acie Law IV coming out of college…but if Marcus Williams can’t get burn here, i’m not holding out hope for Acie. If this is true of course.

Acie was a beast at A&M...
but I think the Dubs were mainly looking to free up their books. Anything they get from Acie would be considered a bonus.

this might be looking like a marcus williams part 2 matter
we get a potential PG who doesn’t play…doesnt bother me too much if we get rid of a huge contract
We still believe!!

Who to sign...who to sign...
Bibby? Andre Miller? Varejao? Brandon Bass? Jason Kidd?

Anything to shake JC i suppose
Is this really all he’s worth?

Who to sign?
We don’t have any additional cap space. We’re taking on Law and Claxton so we’re basically in the same position. Just a year less of salary.
This is what happens when you make boneheaded FA signings, premature extensions, and trade potentially expiring deals for longer ones.

+1
So we turned an expiring Al Harrington into Acie Law and Speedy Claxton? Brilliant!
by b.radley on Jun 24, 2009 1:28 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
On second thought...
If we re-deal these expirings as part of another package, then this is brilliant… So hold your breath.
by b.radley on Jun 24, 2009 1:29 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
probably the reason we traded him...
… because he didn’t want to opt out.
by Sricko on Jun 24, 2009 1:07 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
There's no way he's opting out
and leaving 2 years and $20 million on the table admist the financial instability of all the teams in the league.
Case in point…Washington dealing their 5th pick because they didnt’ want to pay a rookie, they get a decent expiring in Mike Miller and Randy Foye still on his rookie contract.

I doubt it
But if it’s possible, before the FA time is the best time since all of the teams are options

I bet we buy him out.
His full contract is not guaranteed.

That would be typical Rowell. Trying to save a few bucks. He’s more useful as an expiring contract.
by homer simpson on Jun 24, 2009 1:25 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Rather just keep him on the team as an expiring deal.
Those have proved to be quite valuable at the trading deadline.
No need to buy him out. We’re not headed anywhere and we certainly don’t need the roster space.

…contingent on how we handle Law and Speedy contractually. If we use their expiring deals as trade chips, I think this is good for us… getting Jamal out of town is worth it, and even little expirings will have value this year. If we just buy ‘em out, it’s something of a waste of what would be a useful expiring contract in 18 months. Still arguably worth it to be able to move on, but not nearly as good.
by onlxn on Jun 24, 2009 1:10 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I'd bet they're
Trade chips. It’s all but certain that Maggette wasn’t movable because of the contract. The other guys that teams would look for from us would be Buike, Brandan Wright, and Belinelli (lesser extent Turiaf). Given that we don’t want to part with Buike or Wright, and still holding out hope for Marco- I think these are guys we will be moving if able, probably packaged with the #7 pick.
I’m guessing we’re to bring in a vet, either through sign & trade or otherwise.
Now I’m just spewing, but how about getting us some Shawn Marion?!?!

We’re getting two point guards in return, so I’m just going to assume that Jordan Hill is the pick.

Probably true… these two point guards are pretty assy, though, so maybe they’re not in our plans.

still looking forward to the day
we bring in LBJ, Kobe, Bosh…anyone more significant regardless of whether we’re dumping salary or not.

Im going to have to agree
great move Warriors front office. Clear the logjam, get the pure PG backup we have been looking for.
Nobody is discussing this, but I have to put it here: With Minny having the 5 and 6 and promising to keep both, they should all but promise that they are going to take Hill with one of those picks. Why would they not? Front court and back court in one fellow swoop taking the best available.
So now… we have 2 pgs…. no need for a project guard once Curry is off the board. My guess? WE ARE TRADING THE 7!!!
by pinkycheal on Jun 24, 2009 1:12 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Why would they need more frontcourt help?
They want to trade up to #2 for Thabeet if anything. My guess is some combo of Harden, Curry, Evans or Rubio if any of them are still available. They need to improve their backcourt more than anything.
Do you remember Claxton’s last stint with the Warriors? He’s like a faster, worst shooting version of Watson
by Captain Jack on Jun 24, 2009 1:18 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
My guess
is trading out entirely… These are two movable contracts. These contracts (or just one), packaged with the #7 pick and we could have a sign and trade for a vet.
I dont think Larry Riley wants his first pick as GM to come from this draft in the 7 spot, too many 2nd guesses already and too much uncertainty.

Well this is a good move for us really
We instantly drop 2mil in salary which puts us under the cap. Speedy is injuried or something i believe so hes just going to free up 5+ mil for 2010 and acie law hasa team option for 10 season so we’re really shaving 10million for next summer which puts us around 45million and in the hunt for a max deal free agent. Plus Nellie said he wasnt going to play here anyway and to get expirings is best case scenario
by Warriorfan on Jun 24, 2009 1:14 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
We basically turned Crawford’s uncertainty into certain 7.4M off the books after this coming season. My gut tells me this is the first of a way to trade the #7, one or two of the expiring contracts (Law, Claxton) and current Warrior talent (Azubuike, BWright, Marco) for…something.

Wait until Jamal opts out at the last minute
right after the draft and screws us and we’re left in need of a PG.
Oh wait….that was last year.
by phiLthyphiL on Jun 24, 2009 1:18 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
For this trade to go through, I’m assuming Crawford has to sign something stating he’s not opting out a la Etan Thomas.
by homer simpson on Jun 24, 2009 1:24 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
this is nothing more than a salary dump
no way that acie or speedy get any PT. Im telling you it actually makes me feel like we have increased our chances of drafting a PG
by cuse7284 on Jun 24, 2009 1:21 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Not bad not bad
Get rid of Jamal’s contract (I liked him as a player) and pick up some potential trade pieces and expiring contracts. I say pull the trigger.
Maybe we can land another package for Bosh?
We still believe!!

Great Move!
I love Acie Law! He was a beast at A&M and would fit right in, if Nellie plays him. But anyway good move to get rid of Crawford.
Go Riley!
