Prediction: Crawford trade aimed at Stoudemire
Phoenix wants to cut payroll. They just traded shaq for spare parts. Could Amare be next? The excellent suns beat reporter Paul Coro offhandendly mentions that the Dubs are still agitating for Amare, with a package centered on Biedrins. In this context, the expiring contracts the Dubs got from Atlanta would be part of that package:
Amare $16,378,325
for
Biedrins $9,000,000
Claxton $5,209,454
That would work out, salarywise, and net the Suns more than they got for 15-time all star Shaq. The Suns are down a centre now, so Biedrins would fit right in. That leaves the Suns deficient in the PF deparment. Maybe they'd want Jordan Hill too, or Wright.
Would you do it? I think that the Suns are definitely considering it.

i don’t think that we need amare…he has baggage. plus, we have AR at the 4 spot and need him to develop there.

Haha, my bad. I forgot that Biedrins was included in the proposed deal…for some reason I thought it was Monta.
I guess then it could work out, but I don’t really see the Suns making the deal for utlimately, Amare and Biedrins straight up. Suns would have to ask for at least the #7 pick in the deal as well.

I would have to agree
I wouldn’t ever want a power forward who had two knee surgeries and has lost that out of the building jumping ability. He’s not that same player not to mention he doesn’t board particularly well and doesn’t really play much defense. No thanks, I’ll keep the a top 5 rebounder over this chump any day, can you say OVERRATED

Bring it.
Ridiculously efficient 6’11" power forwards don’t grow on trees, you know. Roll with him for a year, enjoy his production, then when he goes FA the Warriors can offer more than anyone else. If he walks, losing Biedrins was not the end of the world. A tough blow, sure, but not franchise-breaking.

Right-o. They would have Ellis, Jackson and Maggette coming in at around $10m each, Turiaf at $4m, Azubuike at $3m, then a bunch of team options. Assuming they pick up Randolph and Wright and decline Belinelli, that leaves them at about $41.8m for those 7 guys. Adding the 5 “phantom” cap holds, you end up at about $43m or so. That should be at least $10m under the salary cap at that time, meaning the Warriors would be players in that big FA year.

the Warriors could be players in that big FA year, but those FA will likely have more than a couple suitors …

Interesting.
We definitely shouldn’t do it without getting Amare to agree to an extension. If he does… well, Amare’s the better player, so I guess you should do it. It’d kinda worry me, though. Biedrins is the younger player, the better rebounder, defends the rim better and has an awfully appealing contract. It’s not exactly easy to find centers. Plus, Amare is a guy who’s much more prolific playing alongside a great passer, something we lack.
The prospect of Monta, Azubuike, Randolph and Amare all slashing to the basket is pretty damn fun. And you’d have to imagine that Nellie would love this. But I don’t know. It’d have some risks.

I used to think that Biedrins had a good contract, but the more I read the more people seem to think that he’s a little overpaid. I wonder if I’m the one who’s wrong here.

I think it’s just that his ceiling seems a bit lower than it was even last year. He’ll never be able to shoot a jump shot, and will never bulk up into an overpowering center.
I remember the end-of-season interview with Nellie by Tim Roye (I think it’s on the warriors site) — when evaluating the center position, Nellie was kind of was a bit lukewarm. He said the position was adequate, but not one in which you’d be dominating many teams with. That seems pretty fair, and doesn’t seem like it would change much in the future.
That said, I think he’d do pretty well with Nash running the pick and roll. It would be fun to watch, more fun than Shaq+Nash together. That was pretty painful.
by bleep on Jun 25, 2009 12:29 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
The Warriors may not have a Steve Nash ...
but they’d typically have 2-3 players on the floor that are considerably better passers than the Suns’ #2 option. I have to imagine that would work for Amare.

The Suns do have Robin Lopez. I’m not saying that would definitely influence how they view this deal, but he is a very young center they do seem to like and we aren’t really considering that aspect of this.

True. But I don’t think anybody there is ready to pencil Lopez in full time, unless they go into uber-rebuilding mode. Which they don’t want to do unless they’ve given up on re-signing Nash, something they seem very intent on at the moment.
Lopez doesn’t have that much of an offensive game. He didn’t even get much play as a backup center last year, until Gentry took over. Biedrins would be a big upgrade on Lopez.

Good deal
we give up Biendrins and…lets say…Wright
We lose a decent defensive center who know’s how to board and move without the ball but cant score worth a lick. We also give up a PF with lots of upside but who has yet to show any type of consistent development
We’d get an allstar PF who thrives in up tempo styles and who wants to be the go to guy. He can board, rock the rim, but has surprising range on his shot (the man can shoot 3s). Also, he has an agenda. He wants to prove that he’s one of the best in the game
I’d like to see him extended before we give up a solid young center…but as mentioned above, we may sacrifice young talent in exchange for a potential one year rental, but we’ll either resign amare or get a huge amount of cap room…my guess is that, since the guy wants to be in the playoffs and play a significant role on the team, all the while the W’s can sign him for more money than any other team…we’d have a decent shot at resigning him
Amare may have been a dream in the past, but it sounds more realistic than ever….I hope the warrior front office makes a serious run at it

andris isnt a decent defensive center. his defense (other than rebounding) is pretty poor. also, offensively he can score very efficiently (if you dont count free throws)

Oh Happy Days !!
I just put out a thread about being creative and going after Amare only to have the naysays say it’s not possible yada yada:
I pointed out that after we get Amare we make that trade with the clips and bring back Baron: that brings back the point guard that we need and puts Monta back at his 2G position:
But hey why stop there, I said we fatten the deal and bring back JRich: they are not that high on him yet, he was a midseason trade, he can be had, then we got the whole enchilada:
AS
AR
Jack
Monta
Baron
JRich 6th man: Morrow, KA, Rocky:

If we build it, they will come !
If I had to let one go because of the cap it would be JRich on this one: Baron for Maggs is a trade off:
Don’t forget, we just got rid of Crawford, and traded SC, also traded AB, so were not much different than we are right now: if JRich crimps his style then just go with Amare and Baron:
Where is your creativity, stuck in the pants pocket of CC?
by ForestGrump on Jun 25, 2009 7:20 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Baron for Maggs isn’t a trade off, Baron’s price tag is a lot bigger. We just traded Crawford….but we got almost just as much salary in return. I’m not sure of actual cap numbers but just estimating off the top of my head, with Biedrins, Maggette, and Claxton you’re talking about shipping out less than 24 mil per year, while adding close to 40 mil in Amare, Baron, and JRich. Thats more that just being creative.

I actually think that if Hill falls to 7,
a Biedrins, Wright, Claxton for Amare deal would be nice for both teams. Phoenix gets an expiring, a very good center to build around, and a PF who showed some promise this season, plus they have their lotto pick which will probably get them a nice PG. The Warriors get a superstar. ’Nuff said.
by ZaMzAm FiRe on Jun 25, 2009 3:34 AM PDT reply actions 1 recs
Might as well go out with a bang.
Nellie is 52 games away from tying Lenny Wilkens with the most games won in the regualr system. If we’re only giving up Biedrins, Claxton, Wright + whoever we pick at 7 hopefully not Curry or Evans, then id do it in a heartbeat. Lets face it, I dont see Nellie coaching after this season and with this team not, i dout we can get 52 wins with the team we have now no matter who we select at 7. Amare is a 2 for 1, that being giving a more legit chance of actucally winning 52 games and putting fans back in the seats.

This deal, if it were to go down, could not happen for a couple of months: Claxton can be traded all by his lonesome at any time, but he cannot be packaged with another player for 2 months after the initial trade. So we’ll have to agitate for Amare a bit longer.

To trade for STAT
and have him masquerade as a C in our system…Ehh..Amare just looked disinterested last year and didn’t seem like he wanted to play defense. Guess he’ll fit right in then yea?
But he dunks the ball really hard and makes Sportscenter highlights. =/
So yes, it makes sense to trade for him.
He doesn’t nearly play as hard as Bosh does. Doesn’t get enough rebounds like he used to. The whole thing with the cornea, the ACL. That coupled with losing Biedrins for nothing when and if STAT walks. Doesn’t make this deal all too enticing.
What’ll happen? We trade for him. We win 46-48 games. Squeak into the playoffs with a first round exit. Then he bolts for the 2010 Market. We’re left with no STAT. No Beans. And a perpetual search for mediocrity at the center position.
by phiLthyphiL on Jun 25, 2009 9:52 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
I actually think keeping STAT is easier than it looks…
He wants to play in a Nellie or D’Antoni type system AND he wants to be the “man” which he’ll be on the W’s, but not so much if he were to (hypothetically) join Lebron or Wade in NYC.
We’d also be able to sign him for the longest & biggest contract. At worst, we’ll probably be able to work a sign & trade.
The real problem is AR & STAT aren’t built to defend centers. at this point STAT probably couldn’t even fake it the way he was able to at least do in his younger days.
by homer simpson on Jun 25, 2009 10:12 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
If we traded Biedrins for Amare, I’d think we’d actually have Randolph defending opposing centers most nights, as crazy as it sounds. He held his own pretty decently at center for spurts last year, and he puts real energy into defending the rim, unlike Amare. The image of him bodying up Howard, Shaq and the rest is certainly scary, but I wouldn’t totally rule out his being able to at least compete against a lot of guys there.

If they make this trade for Amare, a perfect replacement or back up would be Anderson Varejao. He might come at a cheaper price. We could also package up Magette and the pick for a proven PG. Plenty of possibilities.

it would be unbelieveable if we landed Amare...
He’s the type of big man that would flourish in Nellie’s system. A 4/5 that can run the floor…has excellent post up skills…can knock down the 12-15 footer….AND he’s a defensive presence in the post! What more do you want?
Only concern…that bad eye and he vows to wear goggles for the rest of his career…will he be Kareem and still dominate, or spiral down to Rambis level? haha
