A different angle perhaps? How about the FA pool?
So we're all buzzing off the the Amar'e possibility. But seems like that Suns are butt hurt that we got Stephen Curry @ #7 and the deal could be losing it's legs. No indication the Warriors would go this way, but what if they look to add that "beef" through Free Agency?
Looking @ Chad Fords latest list of available FA's. We need to take into consideration that some are restricted, but would any GSoMers be interested in some of these player out there? Also, not to sure about the number, but does anyone know what kind of flexibility we currently have w/ the cap? Maybe some more player movement to dump some $$$ could have us bringing in a quality player.
I've added a poll to see what kinda of player we're really looking for. The list includes some small players that could play the 3/4, and some larger 4/5 players(at least in our system). I know there are a few other like Gooden, Wilcox and Frye that could fill some roster slots, but I'm going for the bigger named players.
REMEMBER: This is hypothetical, if we could get a FA. Not counting the Cap.
This FanPost is a submission from a member of the mighty Golden State of Mind community. While we're all here to throw up that W, these words do not necessarily reflect the views of the GSoM Crew. Still, chances are the preceding post is Unstoppable Baby!

Charlie V!!!
We wouldn’t have to give him as much money as we would the bigger names like Amare, Hedo, Boozer, or Marion. Lee and Odom looks like they’ll be back with their respective teams. I think Charlie V would fit this system very well and would be good for the price he would be demanding in this market.

None.
Maybe some more player movement to dump some $$$ could have us bringing in a quality player.
At this point, “player movement” cannot bring us cap space to spend in this off-season. Contracts that have expired have expired and you cannot trade for. Any deal we make now will have to bring back almost as much salary as we send out since the other team will need to send out salary to open up space to take our contracts.
The only way would be to get players to agree to gigantic buyouts at pennies on the dollar (e.g. “Maggs, you’ll take a $40 [not $40 mil, but two Andrew Jacksons] to walk away, right?” Not going to happen) or find a team with cap space willing to take on our salaries without sending any players back (also not likely to happen).
We have the MLE to work with for free agency.

Thought you’d come thru on the answers. What’s the MLE lookin like, around $4-$5 Mil?

It’s about $5.5m for next season, and annual raises of 8% are allowed.

i’d love to agree with you, but i really don’t know if AR is ever gonna be to handle like odom, especially in traffic.

Listen to Odom himself
Lamar already said AR will be much better than him. NBA players don’t gravitate towards humility so I think you can put some value to his opinion.

Here is what I would've done...
We should’ve traded S-Jax to Orlando for C Lee + expiring contracts (SJax would have been a great replacement for Hedo and at a cheaper price for Orlando + more D). Then we can pick up some complimentry pieces from the FA pool like Lee, Amare, or Marion.
Our biggest need is a low post big men that can score and a defensive swingman (like a Battier or Trevor Ariza maybe even Bowen!). We definitely already have enough scoring on the team
by yuman1234 on Jun 30, 2009 12:46 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
I like buike as the defensive swingman. however the need for a post player is legit. the only guy i see on there is boozer that fits the post player description and no way we get him with maggette still on the books.

Considering our financial situation, I think the most realistic choices would be Charlie V, the Birdman, or Gortat. Not sure how much any of them would be demanding on the market, but would any of them accept the MLE?

I personally would love to see Gortat in a Warriors uni
he provides interior toughness, rebounds well has a nice post game, all of these things would be nice and I think we might be able to get him for the MLE.
The only issue with this I think Nelson is in love with the idea of having shooters at every position including center which is the main reason why were willing to get rid of all these young players/possible trade pieces for one overated superstar named Amare.

by REALstateofmind on Jun 30, 2009 4:06 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
That doesn’t change a thing. The Warriors will have no salary cap space for like 4 years anyway, so signing a guy to the MLE every year won’t make a difference for quite a while.

Do you REALLY believe that? I can only assume that you haven’t looked past the pasty color of their skin if you’re comparing the two. In the sense that they’re both white, Gortat might be Fuller Jr. In terms of quality of play, they aren’t at all similar. Gortat played very well throughout the season and reasonably well last season. Fuller was never good.

MARK, does your MLE account for the money we save with Claxton insurance?
Actually someone with good knowledge should start a new thread with the Cap numbers. I wonder who’s salarys are toward the cap and who’s tradeable. Is Perovic’s salary still there? Are his rights trade able? What about Tin Foyle? Or if all this breakdown is already some place a link would be great.

Claxton’s salary has no impact on the MLE. Every team can use the MLE unless they are under the cap by an amount exceeding the MLE, so using the MLE is irrelevant.
www.hoopshype.com/salaries is a great place to see who the Warriors are paying.
Thing C
by markdash on Jun 30, 2009 4:47 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Claxton’s insurance money has no effect on the cap. His whole salary counts, even if he’s being paid by bailout money pushed to a failing insurance company.

This team looks really good
What if we did the Amare trade of Marco, Biedrins , and Wright. Then sign Dahntay Jones for some defensive help. Then trade Maggette and Claxton for Kirelinko
PG- Curry (I think he will get the starting job sooner rather then later), Ellis, Law
SG – Ellis, Morrow, Jones
SF – Jackson, Azebuike, Kirelinko
PF – Randolph, Kirelinko ( he will play both under Nelson), Davidson
C- Amare , Turiaf
With the Suns dropping off, Utah and New Orleans’ status up in the air and Dallas slipping some this opens up a playoff spot for us.

maggette makes just over 10 mil a year
by REALstateofmind on Jun 30, 2009 4:15 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
No not yet. He makes $8,937,931 this upcoming season and $9,600,000 next season. He won’t be making “over 10 mil a year” till the ‘11-’12 season.
I believe the salaries in trades can be within 125% of each other. In 2 months from the day he was traded for, Claxton can easily be added to that scenario to make the deal work.
I don’t know how badly Utah’s owner wants to avoid paying the luxury tax and what other offers they are receiving. ESPN’s Sheridan is saying that Utah would likely have to throw in that unprotected 2010 NYK’s pick in order to find any takers for Kirilenko. Once they do, I expect that they’ll get better luxury tax relief offers than what we can provide.

Actually, it sounds like you don’t understand current NBA salary structures. Big men are paid at a higher rate than wings & points.
The going rate for back up big men coming off the rookie scale is around $6 million dollars.
some examples:
Nazr Mohammed, $6,466,600
DeSagana Diop, $6,031,800
Darko Milicic, $7,500,000
Jared Jeffries, $6,466,600
Nick Collison, $6,250,000
Tony Battie, $6,292,000
Dan Gadzuric, $6,745,000
Jeff Foster, $6,077,500

I hate hypothetical trade talk. i don’t mind discussing any particular player and how he might fit with our team but the proposed players we offer is such a waste of internet space, and yes I know it may be infinite and it’s still a waste.
“hey how about I trade you my dirt TP for a date with your GF?” ….ya really. That is what they all sound like. I’m with Mr. REAL here. Unless you it’s linked to a rumor some where, it should be off limits.
If i’m alone then i’m sorry and continue on with your “let’s trade Maggette for Tony Parker cause the salaries are close enough and it works on ESPN” talk.
