Starbury?
We all know the history of Stephon Marbury from his days with the Nets, the Wolves, the Suns and his infamous years with the Knicks. After he got released he played for the Celtics, very sparingly. And it seems like he isn't as cocky or such a cancer to the locker room anymore. He is now older and wiser and wants to prove that he still belongs in the NBA. He's an unrestricted free agent this year and maybe we could pick him up? Maybe for the MLE? He shouldn't be making anymore than that anywhere else anyways. He could help develop Monta's PG skills and be a very good backup off the bench. He's also good in a run-n-gun style that we play. We really don't have anything to lose and we could hold up a stance like the Celtics did and tell him if he screws up, he's gone. As you all may already know, we are very in need of a PG to run this team. He could come off the bench to spell Monta. And he is a career average of 7.6 assists per game and even this previous year when he played for the Celtics, he averaged 19 minutes per game, played in only 23 games and STILL averaged more than 3 assists per game. What do you guys think?

pass
hes not a cancer in Boston because PP, RA and KG are there… what happens when he gets here?
i’d only take him for vet minimum

Marbury is done. He's a vet minimum salary player now
I liked his game but watching him on the Celtics was painful. He’s essentially Bobby Jackson with a smidgen of hope that he might have one more good year left in him.

Oh dear god no
Marbury is terrible. He doesn’t bring a single thing to the table. He doesn’t help on D, he can’t shoot, he only got assists because he absolutely dominated the ball – he doesn’t run an offense effectively at all. I don’t know if you could pay me personally to endure watching Marbury on our team, even if his attitude has improved.

He doesn’t.

No way
Team cancer 100%. We have a team full of young, impressionable guys. Bad, bad fit.

strictly in terms of what they bring to the basketball court (chemistry disasters aside), i’d take cj over starbury.

I don't want him, not because he's a cancer or anything...
I just don’t think the dudes got it anymore

The question is, even when he was "good" ...
… Starbury really wasn’t that good.
Has there ever been a case of him being traded to a team and that team getting substantially better? New Jersey got worse when they acquired him and better when they got rid of him. Pheonix got worse when the acquired him and better when they got rid of him. The Knicks got – shockingly! – worse when they acquired him and better when they got rid of him.
(I won’t blame him for Boston’s decline, but the pattern does hold.)
Why does anyone think that the results would be different here?

Marbury always had superstar talent. Thing is, he never had the first clue how to turn it into winning basketball. Never did, never will, and now he’s too old and doesn’t even have the superstar talent anymore.

Marbury's career WS48
going into this year, was .105. .1 is average. In other words, he’s basically been an average player over his career.
Sorry, but if you’re going to say somebody has “superstar talent” doesn’t he actually have to deliver at some point in his career?
The primary skill Marbury displayed was dominating the ball. He strikes me as the epitome of everything that was wrong with the basketball players who came of age in the mid-90s. He’s Allen-Iverson lite. These guys who were so hyped coming into the league that they never bothered to learn how to be good teammates. The press decided they were good because they scored a lot of points and looked flashy doing it … ignoring all of their misses and mistakes.

I think you misinterpreted what I was saying. He had superstar quality skills and athleticism, but instead he was busy dominating the ball, taking terrible shots, not getting his teammates involved, not running any semblance of an efficient offense, and not playing any D – which, as you said, adds up to a player that didn’t deliver at any point in his career. The physical abilities were there, it’s just the rest of the game was well beyond him.
On an unrelated note, good for him for succeeding, though. He had a fucked up childhood and probably should have ended up like his deadbeat brothers but made it into the NBA. Even if he never lived up to his potential as a very good player, he still made it.

The day of the trade to NY, I distinctly remember going to the NY Post website to see what their headline was. Of course, it was about the “heist” that the Knicks pulled off in getting Marbury for next to nothing.
I also distinctly remember chuckling to myself, since that trade was far and away superior for the Suns.

I say lets do it, what do we have to loose
if the salaries add up I say AR + Monta should do the trick to get them to do a sign and trade.
There's a party in my mind.
And I wish that I was there.

RONDO is apparently available along with Ray Allen
by bushido on Jun 5, 2009 9:17 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
i sort of doubt it and even if he was, we could not put together a package that would be remotely close to making that happen without completely gutting the team.

Monta for Rondo?
I would do that trade in a second. (The money doesn’t work b/c Monta makes $11 mil/yr whereas Rondo only makes $2.6-3.8 mil/yr – would have to put a package together.)
by Neon on Jun 6, 2009 12:34 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
i would do that trade in a heartbeat too. i just don’t see why boston would.

i think it was a joke
no way rondo is available after his playoff performance and given his age. i also would do a monta for rondo trade. then we could draft harden or derozan
