Don't stress about the Draft, trust in Larry Riley!
Not really, but don't worry because it doesn't matter. Everyone seems to be stressing about the upcoming draft. I don't know why. No rookie, none, will play a significant role for us next year. Unless of course everyone is injured like last season, but then it won't matter becasue we would just be heading back to the lottery. The truth is, in case you forgot, Nellie doesn't play rookies, unless he absolutely has to. I know pretty much everyone is praying for a PG. There have been some pretty lively debates thanks to Brandon Jennings and Jrue Holliday. But it doesn't matter.
We'll most likely be starting Jack and Monta with Jamal, Marco, A-Mo, and possibly CJ backing them up. Keeping in mind that Nellie doesn't play rookies , there is no PG, with the possible exception of Rubio, that would even play (unless we're in garbage time). Our backcourt is set next year, unless we don't resign CJ, than we need a 3rd string PG, I guess there's where a rookie comes in.
Monta/Jamal/CJ? or Marco
Jack/Marco/Morrow
Buike/Maggs/AR or Jack or Morrow
AR or BWright/ the other half of the twin towers/Maggs/Buike/Jack
Biedrins/Turiaf
Being that Nellie will only play 10 or 11 guys at most, I just listed all 11 (excluding CJ). Looking at that lineup actually makes me feel that we need another SF/PF. Someone had mentioned Portland trading up to get Curry. If we could get Outlaw and their 24, that to me is the best scenario. Outlaw off the bench is perfect for us. Plus we would get a quality NBA player guaranteed, none of these rookies is a guarantee. Being that this trade won't happen either, our 7 pick doesn't matter. Nellie probably likes this lineup anyway because the mass amount of SG/SF we have will allow him to play Maggs, Jack, and Buike some at the 4, which Nellie loves.
So while it is fun to imagine us getting a ROY or even a solid rookie who will be significant, the fact of the matter is that it's not going to happen. But hey, the season is over, we're almost 5 months away from the next one, at least this gives us an excuse to get together and talk about our Warriors.
Plus we were injured last year, there is reason to 'Believe' in next season.

we have a big logjam of mediocre players. there’s plenty of room for a rookie with game to crack that rotation, because (time for a little secret) the team isn’t very good.

Yeah there are a couple rookies that may crack our rotation
Blake Griffin and maybe, maybe Rubio. But we’re not getting them. Other than that, I’d be suprised to see any player, espescially a gaurd, get serious burn in our rotation. Plus, the majority of our mediocre talent is under 25, I don’t have a problem waitting it out. Last year’s draft was way better, there won’t be someone with Randolph’s talent at 14 this time around.
by myk on Jun 5, 2009 5:34 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
waiting it out with this roster will never get us to contender status. it’s just not good enough. if randolph becomes kg or monta becomes wade, then sure, but i’m not holding my breath.
there are plenty of rookies (particularly point guards) who could step in and play decent minutes off the bench for this team. almost everyone that we will consider at the 7 has at least one very useful skill that we could use for spot minutes right now. there are a lot of holes on this team, many of which will not be patched by waiting and hoping.

I sort of agree with your first statement about waiting
but it’s not like the ‘mediocre’ talent we have is even in their prime. With the exception of whom I’m calling the “Big 3”, based on their contracts. We don’t need Monta to be Wade, we don’t need AR to be KG, who was the super star on Detroit in ‘04? Who is that good on San Antonio? Parker and Duncan are excellent, but KG>Timmy and DWade>Parker. We don’t need a crazy super star on our team. Cleveland has proved that the overall quality of the team is more important than a star. If we keep Monta, Marco, Morrow, AR, BW, Biens, and Ronny together for another few years I truley believe that will be a perennial playoff team, at least.
Honestly, what guard in this draft is better than Marco? The dude dropped 25 on team USA when he was 18. That’s amazing. Jennings can’t even crack a starting lineup in Italy, something Marco has done since he was 17. Curry is really the only guard who I can see us getting and playing, but he is too similar to Monta. Holliday shoulda stayed at UCLA for at least another year. This is a weak draft, its been said, and it’s true.

duncan is one of the best big men to ever play the game, so i’m not sure why you’d bring him up to demonstrate that you don’t need a superstar to win. detroit’s title was a fluke, they got lucky and played a lakers team with huge chemistry issues. don’t wait around for another detroit to win a title.
and even if an ensemble cast of very good players could be a contender, we don’t even have that much talent. you have an incredibly optimistic view of marco, who has shown over a five game stretch that he could be good, but for the most part has shown “8th man on a decent team” potential.
morrow is a pretty good player who could fill a role on a very good team, possibly starting, possibly off the bench. but you don’t build contenders around “pretty good”.
biedrins is unlikely to improve much from where he is now. we’ve seen him start to plateau already. he’s a very good starting center and i love having him on the team, but he’s not carrying us to a title.
ronny is also not going to get much better; he’s an energy/defense guy with a decent jump shot who rebounds poorly for a center. he’s a nice piece, but not much more.
wright is a borderline starter. i love him as a backup pf, but don’t go crazy about his potential to be the best player on a contender.
AR and monta are the two guys with “all-star potential” on this roster. monta probably won’t ever get there because of his problems on defense and his lack of a real position. AR seems more likely because he’s such a good rebounder and shot blocker. if his defense improves and he plays within himself, i’d bet he’ll see at least a couple all-star games in his career.
so, that leaves us with what? one guy who i think should be an all-star at some point, one guy who might do it if a lot of things break his way and a bunch of guys who can help them power their way to a 5th seed. perennially in the playoffs? maybe. perennially contending? no.
here’s the list of guards in the draft who i prefer to marco: rubio, harden, curry, flynn, lawson, derozan, williams (though he could be considered a forward), holiday, jennings, maynor, henderson. that’s a pretty long list.

Hmm.. AI plays no D, perennial all star
Monta will be an all star, the only thing that is actually preventing him is how stacked the West is with guards. It simply comes down to this, I am more optimistic than you as you pointed out. I see a lot of great potential on this team. Mostly due to the youth.
I can’t say what AR will be like he’s only 20. BWright would start on a few NBA teams, maybe not quality ones, but he is also only 21 and as a backup he is terrific. I actually think BWright has hella game and potential, he’s our best low post scorer, and he will be a blocking machine. Ronny is exactly what we need him to be, a solid backup with NRG and D. Morrow lead the league in 3pt% as a rookie, already has a couple 30 pt games under his belt, he is 23/24 cant remember. I think Marco is good now, and he’ll be a stud in eventually, he is also only 22/23. Andris is the same age, and I can’t think of very many centers that are better that him. Obviously he’ll never be the best center, but he’ll be one of the top 5 annually.
These young guys also all seem to have good chemistry, that is a huge factor in the NBA, look at Denver’s turn around when they dumped AI. Sure we won’t be great this year, maybe not next year, but before Monta and AB’s contracts are up, we could see something very special from this team.
I just feel that all the negative things that have happened regarding our basketball team since like ’94 have left many of us with with an extremely pessimistic outlook.

bottom line
this team’s ceiling is “good” not “great”. there’s a lot of very nice pieces on the team, but we’re not there with this roster. add another all-star type player and maybe another piece and we can talk, but as assembled, this team is very unlikely to be a contender.
and when ai was younger, he was a much better defender than monta has shown us. he was never particularly good, but he gave it his all on every possession and made up for his size with quickness and was a good ball hawk. i’d like to think monta could do that too, but he hasn’t yet and we shouldn’t assume that he will.

Don't stress? I have ZERO FAITH
in Riley, Rowell, or Cohan.
Riley has had little success in Dallas, Vancouver, or Milawukee, what makes anyone believe that he’ll have similar success in GS under this current regime? Especially with Nelly pulling the strings on this puppet, our roster is doomed for mediocrity.
Although I’d want Evans, Jennings, Holiday at 7, we’ll probably draft Williams or Hansborough at 7. Can’t put anything past this franchise.

Mitch Richmond
Chris Webber

There doesn't appear to be anyone with Webber or Richmond's talent in this draft.
Or Hardaway. At least not anyone that’ll last to the 7th. None of the rookie pg’s that all the mock drafts have us taking are that great, with the exception of Curry, but he is Monta2, sorta plays like Jamal, not what we need. I also like Tyreke Evans a lot. I watched a lot of UCLA games last year, Holliday didn’t seem as impressive as everyone says, I was suprised he didn’t stay in college. Don’t know much about Brandon Jennings, other than the fact he sits on the bench for an Italian team at 19, he’s already way behind Marco. I believe at 18 Marco put up 25 points against the US national team, no one that good in the draft. Also, If I’m not mistaken, Mitch, CWebb, and Timmy all had 4 years of college under their belts. I think that makes a difference. The only players we are mocked draft to pick with that experience are Curry or TWill.
If we’re looking fot a player to come in and make a difference with the 7th pick, it’ll be becasue we traded it for one. Which is very, very possible

A guy that can shoot 3’s and play defense? Yes, please. Unless you would rather take a guy over him that can only shoot 3’s (Morrow), is Jamal Crawford (Jamal Crawford), can score but doesn’t really do much else (Maggette), and is a decent role player on the offensive end but doesn’t do much else (Azubuike).

Every time I’ve seen them play he’s looked good on D. He’s got great size for it (6’9 and long as hell), so I don’t know what would be holding him back. A case of the Warriors, maybe?
by Missing Barry on Jun 5, 2009 11:55 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
he's al harrington 2.0
minus the attitude and a bit more efficient or maybe he just doesnt have the green like AL always had (or gave himself lol)
by tafkasam on Jun 5, 2009 2:28 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I just don’t see a Harrington comp at all. From what I’ve seen with Outlaw, he appears to me to be a better shooter than Harrington, though Harrington has a more complete offensive game. The real difference is D. Harrington is too slow to guard most 3’s, and not big/long enough to effectively guard most 4’s. From what I’ve seen of Outlaw, he has the physical ability to matchup well with wings, and is tall/long enough to at least sometimes guard 4’s (too skinny for it to be a desirable matchup, though).
Maybe Al Harrington 2.0 as in the new and improved version of Harrington?

just curious if
anybody thinks that monta could get traded in daft day deal? i bring it up cuz he’s not a nellie type of PG and hes to small to be a SG. any PG that they draft this year would not be able to play with monta on the court cuz they would be just to small in the backcourt.

“any PG that they draft this year would not be able to play with monta on the court cuz they would be just to small in the backcourt”
I mean…I think that’s still up for debate right now. If Evans or Holliday can play PG effectively, they’re big enough to man the 2 defensively.
by Missing Barry on Jun 5, 2009 9:51 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Evans is big enough to guard the 2 but i dont think that he is the play maker that this team needs from the PG and Jrue and the rest of the PG’s that our available in this draft our actually the same size as or smaller than monta.

6’4 200 pounds with a 6’7 wingspan for Holiday. That should be big enough to matchup with 2’s.

Jamal will be a better option at PG than Holliday
next season, and probably for a few seasons later. Plus Monta is our PG. It’s understandable that there is skepticism when it comes to this subject, but a 39 9 9 game against CP3 and New Orleans makes me feel better. Once Monta understands that his ability to create scoring opportunites for others is just as important to us as his scoring, a 22ppg 6rpg and 7ast per game average is certainly likely.
by myk on Jun 5, 2009 6:45 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
i like monta as a point guard next year, but we don’t have anyone to back him up (honestly, jamal needs to stay on the bench in a suit, the team will be better for it). next season, there are a lot of point guards who we could draft to immediately fill that role.

Word, free agency is an option.
But I actually like Jamal off the bench, I’ve said this before, but having Jamal Crawford as your first guard off the bench is a lot like Jason Terry for Dallas. I actually think we will have one of the better benches in the league. Maggette and Jamal, I bet most teams, especially Cleveland, would do anything to get those guys on their bench. Then add in either AR or BWright, Morrow, Marco, and Ronny, that’s a good bench, I cant think of any bench off the top of my head that is better than that.
