Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Who will earn the 5th spot?

So as the roster stands at this current moment its apperant that Monta, Jack, Biedrins, Randolph will be our starters. So i ask ya'll the following: who will come into training camp and earn that 5th starting position? I personally hope Brandan comes into training camp "beef'ed up" and a chip on his shoulder and earns that spot. I can already hear people say Randolph is our PF but I still think he could play the SF.

I also want to know whats the deal with all the news on our players except Brandan? Has he dissapeared and joined some type of underground militia? So to pree or even my dude at cc times Marcus Thompson II, can ya'll schedule some type of phone interview or something?

So please vote and explain why you voted for that certain player. It will be fun hearing each others opinions and debating them, thanks!!!

I voted for Morrow

His SL performance is not a factor (though, it didn’t hurt!). The mere threat of Morrow’s shot will create more opportunities for others. He just needs to learn to pass it as soon as the defense smothers him.

Someone who shoot’s as well as Morrow is going to start on a Don Nelson team. The only way he won’t is if Kelenna or Marco come to camp showing everyone else up. Kelenna could, Marco, not so much

Ya no kidding, and its sad that Buki is still our starting SF, by far our weakest position.

There's a party in my mind.
And I wish that I was there.

Moving past the “what position is Randolph” argument – Wright can’t be our starting PF, because of numbers. The only quality post men we have are Randolph, Biedrins, Turiaf and Wright. Turiaf fouls a lot. Randolph needs to play PF for the simple reason that we don’t have enough big men for him to play SF.

Re: AR's position

It doesn’t really matter what we call him. Where he plays is going to depend on match-ups. You may see certain match-ups this year (barring trades) with AR playing with two of the following three players: Turiaf, Biedrins & Wright. In those situations, he’ll be the defacto 3.

I agree that he should spend the majority of his time at the 4 because I like him near the basket on defense for rebounding and shot-blocking. If he’s the 3 on offense, he can still sneak in for the offensive tip-in. But you still have really good players in Maggette and Buikie who are natural 3s who should get minutes so he’s not likely to live at that spot unless they go really big.

Also, I think they plan on trying to run the offense through him a bit this year. That may be mostly in the post like the did with Baron Davis where he’d keep his dribble and either score or pass out of a double-team. We’ll see.

I guess my point is, we shouldn’t fixate on whether or not he’s a 3 or a 4 because he’s going to move around between 3, 4 & 5 based on match-ups and situations. It’s also going to depend on what the roster looks like for opening night.

Reduce your carbon footprint, commit suicide.

weird that Morrow would be leading this poll…. its almost as if some recent event would be significantly influencing people’s responses.

I know Maggette was much better off the bench last year, and I’d still vote for Buike to be the 5th starter, but shouldn’t Maggette at least be a poll option?

Thing A

by sam23 on Jul 16, 2009 9:04 PM PDT reply actions

Maggette wouldn’t get my vote, but I don’t know how anyone could have watched a game last year and vote for Randolph to move to the 3.

Thing A

by sam23 on Jul 16, 2009 9:27 PM PDT up reply actions

I think Nelson, the master of offensive mismatch strategy, wants to play Randolph at the 3 to at least some degree, and I don’t see why we wouldn’t do it, at least on occasion. Look at his stats for the SL Bulls game and his comment about it. He was “pushed around.” He is not an ideal 4, when it comes to rebounding. However, if we have someone like Drew Gooden at the 4, when it looks like our opponent’s 4 will push Randolph around or at least tire him out, playing Randolph at the 3 could play to our advantage. At the rate he’s developing, I fully expect him to be able to handle the 3 in the near future. Besides, both a beefy PF and Randolph at SF would give us far more boards than having Jack at the 3 and Randolph at the 4. Randolph, I think, will only be a superstar, if he can play the 3, too.

the vote is about this year not last

His shooting has dramatically improved and so has his decision making. He could go to SF.

I don't know how anyone could have watched a game last year and vote for Maggs to start...

when he was getting to the line and racking up points like a ball stuck in a ramp of a pinball machine I don’t see how anyone could not start him?

Now wheres the rubbers? Whose got the rubbers?
I noticed there's so many of them
and there's really not that many of us.

by Skeptic con Urquell on Jul 16, 2009 9:43 PM PDT up reply actions

He's overly ball-dominant to be the starter

While he’s a better player, IMO, than Buike, he’s more valuable as the first guy off the bench. When the starters are resting he can dominate the ball (the only thing he knows how to do) and won’t get in the way of the flow of the offense. He’s like a super-sixth-man like some guys around the league have been the last few years: Ginobili, Stackhouse, etc.

by Neon on Jul 16, 2009 10:08 PM PDT up reply actions

Ginobili made the entire bench squad better when the starters were resting. Maggette does two things good, score points and get to the line. Which is what we need from a 6th man. But I wouldn’t compare him to Ginobili in his prime.

Ginobili >>>>>> Maggette

by Neon on Jul 17, 2009 4:11 PM PDT up reply actions

I like Morrow coming off the bench at this stage with Kelenna starting at SF. KAz is still a better all round player than AM and is getting better in his own right. Don’t forget that KAz was only two places below AM in the NBA last season for 3 point shooting percentage. But if AM shows himself a difference maker across the early games with the quality of his shooting then he can’t be denied the starting role. If AM starts then Jax goes to SF. In the long run in might be better for Curry to come off the bench as a backup in competition with CJ (possibly a better shooter at this stage given Curry’s struggles from the floor at Summer League). I hope people remember how raw Curry is at this stage and don’t write him off. He has all the mental and technical performance attributes to be an excellent PG of the future, but give him time. Think where AR is today compared to the error ridden poor shooter we saw for much of the first half of last season.

Either way, Maggette will get more playing time than whoever starts at the wing opposite of Jackson.

by Rated-R Superstar on Jul 16, 2009 9:21 PM PDT up reply actions

I think Nelson said he wants to move Jackson back to the 3. The best two on the team next to Jack is Morrow. Curry will try to compete to take the 1, which would move Monta to the 2. However, Curry and Monta… I foresee catastrophe on the defensive end.

by Naticus on Jul 16, 2009 9:32 PM PDT reply actions

Morrow is a bench player, period.

Stephen will be starting eventually but probably won’t progress enough to take Buike’s starting spot in October. It just makes the most sense to keep Jack and Monta starting at the guard spots to begin with then move Jack back to three and Monta to two at times. Buike and Jack will provide relatively good defense when coupled with Beans and A’dolph, and that’s what the coaches will stress.
The five players who play best together will start not the five best/talentedest players

I wish the poll said who do you want starting

not who do you see because…. thats impossible to know. Nelson changes his lineup so much we won’t have a definite starter at the 2,3, or 4 on some nights. He is wacky. We may have around 30 starting lineups.

Cause Havoc. Bring Nash in and 120 point games will be very expected

i don't think

randolph is a garunteed starter either even though I would love to see him start. you never know with nelson.

by Agent Zero on Jul 16, 2009 10:39 PM PDT reply actions

i heard in an interview with riley that...

he texted/called/met up with all the players at the end of the season to get people on the same page. somewhere in there, he mentioned brandan was taking summer school classes out at UNC towards his degree. bwright is gonna be a backup to randolph as a pf because we’re just too stacked at the 2 and 3 to do otherwise.

i would think marco would be competing with cj for those minutes at the 1 and morrow/jack at the 2.

I want to see Wright and Randolph play together, but I have trouble envisioning great success. It’s be entertaining, at least.

by Naticus on Jul 17, 2009 12:56 AM PDT reply actions

voted for BW to start at 4

moving AR to 3. reason being that BW has the better post scoring while AR seems to like operating from about 20 ft. out. AR is obviously the more athletic and putting him at the 3 allows him the freedom to come out of no where to snag boards and put backs. As for defense i truly think that AR has the athletic ability to guard 3’s, and he would be a great weakside defender while saving his body and energy by not guarding other 4’s. with both AR and BW in the game it gives size advantage ( height not width) and one helps the other.

by KeepdaCore on Jul 17, 2009 7:04 AM PDT reply actions

Buike is my pick

He’s the best defender out of that list for one. He also brings mutliple threats on the offensive side of the ball. He fits good with a Monta type player who can penetrate the defense leaving him open for a 3pt or a better lane to the basket where he can finish. Although none of those players are playmakers buike has the best chance right now to be(Curry could leap frog once i see him in play in the Man league).

by Warriorfan on Jul 17, 2009 10:09 AM PDT reply actions

Wouldn't it be amazing if Nellie would do something logical..

..like not run Jax’s old legs into the ground while giving more minutes to Morrow and Curry.

Buike gets the start

Monta, Jack, Buike, Randolph, Biedrins

Our bench would be, in order of rotation:
Maggette, Morrow, Turiaf, Wright, Curry, Belinelli, Watson, (Law or whatever veteran PF we sign)

I think buike would get the starting nod because he is much more versatile than Morrow at this point. Of course, Maggette is better than both of them, but as we saw last season, he is MUCH better suited coming off the bench in his potential 6th man of the year role. After that, Morrow, since he got quite alot of burn last season off the bench and his recent work at summer league. Then it would be the bigs Turiaf and Wright, simply because Biedrins and Randolph cannot play the entire game and those two are pretty good big men off the bench. After that, our lottery pick Curry will get some burn, he seems pretty NBA ready already, even though he didn’t do too good in Summer League, he has the Basketball IQ and swagger to already play in this league, he just needs to build himself up physically to match up with the rigors of the NBA regular season. After that is anyone’s guess. I have always been a very huge Belinelli supporter, and although he and wright are great trading chips, if they DONT get traded, I hope Belinelli comes into training camp ready to play and earns some good minutes off the bench. I stand by my previous statement of calling him the next coming of Manu Ginobili….eventually. =)

… although, personally, I’d like to see Morrow start — I just don’t think it’ll happen, at least early on in the season.

Monta / Curry
Jackson / Morrow
Azubuike / Maggette
Randolph / Wright
Beidrins / Turiaf

Not much to discuss unless there’s some trades or injuries. I’m sure it will rotate cause Nellie likes to play the match up game, i.e. depending who we are playing but this will be our regular depth cart. Like it or not.
