Would you or do you currently rock another team's jersey?
Hey what's up GSOMers? With it being the offseason, there's a little basketball news, but not much. I just thought I'd attempt something different and start a discussion of who's jerseys we would wear. Mainly, non-Warrior jerseys. Back when I was younger, I did purchase some other teams' jerseys being that I was an NBA fan in general. Later on as years went by, I was beginning to wonder if it's disrespectful to my teams if I rock another teams colors. However, being that I am an NBA fan, I kinda want to wear replica jerseys of some individual players that I like for when I play in pick-up games. So if you currently have other players' jerseys, who is it? And other than of course you like them, why?
The only replica jersey of the Warriors I have is Nick Van Exel. I wasn't crazy about giving up Antawn Jamison for him, but I was juiced knowing that he's now on our team. I bought his jersey at a game when he hit a 3, 2 of them if I remember correctly, to beat the Spurs. My other Warrior jerseys are an orange swingman J-Rich, a swingman Maggette (Anniversary gift from my girl), and authentics of Pietrus and Ellis (I of course bought that before I started to not like him, but hey, it still reps for our Dubs). I don't want to play in my swingmen or authentics, or course. Back in April of '05, I was in L.A. because I was a diehard WWE fan back then, and went to WrestleMania 21 at the Staples Center. At the end of my vacation, I went to a Clippers vs Spurs game, and the Spurs won in double ot after Robert Horry hit a gw 3. Before the game, for a souvenir, I bought a Clippers swingman Maggette jersey. I like his energy, and I knew lots of people would have Elton Brand jerseys. I do play ball in that though since I do have a Warriors one. And since he's my favorite player of all-time, I have an authentic Scottie Pippen jersey with the NBA Finals trophy logo on it. I definitly won't play ball in that. And last but not least, I have a swingman Durant jersey, who most of you might know, is my favorite player in the NBA.
I'm paying off some debts, but when that's done, I'm going to treat myself in getting a replica Posey jersey. I don't see anyone representing for him whenever they're playing. I absolutely love Posey. He puts in his part in helping to destroy the Lakers whenever he plays against them no matter what team jersey he's wearing. I would love to have a Celtics one since he was the x-factor in them destroying the Lakers in the '08 Finals, but I can't find it anywhere, so I'll settle for a Hornets one.
I've asked some of my buddies who are fans of other teams, and they for the most part said yes that they'd wear another jersey, just not a rival team's. So I guess it's not too bad if I do. I just wouldn't wear it on a day/night of a Warriors game.

I have...
…a game-worn warmup shooting shirt that was Cliff Robinson’s in Phoeniz. I also have a Reggie Miller replica. Outside of that, no other team jerseys. I actually do have The City version of Van Exel’s, and enjoy the puzzled looks it draws.
Phoenix Suns...
…charity auction. It hangs down to my knees, almost, it’s absurdly long.
I'm more into throwbacks
I have two Mullin jerseys. Sold my Tim Hardaway jersey but I miss it. Grant Hill Pistons, Jordan and Penny Hardaway jerseys which are all champion. Only roc jerseys to games though. Contemplated for ever if I wanted a Baron jersey. Thank God I didn’t get one. I’m almost certainly gonna get a Randolph jersey once they change their uni’s.
NIce!
Yeah I forgot I actually have a M&N Hardaway jersey. I’ve put on weight since I bought it though, so it was a big waste of money. I’m keeping it though incase I ever get back to my weight. I also forgot to mention I have a Kevin Martin jersey my girl bought me because she thinks I look like him (Again, when I was a whole lot slimmer)
In my profile pic
That’s me wearing a nick van exel city jersey with the clear waters of Boracay in the background. Taken 2 weeks ago :)

I want a Wade USA jersey.
But I can’t find any. But as for other NBA teams I don’t really know. Maybe a Jameer Nelson jersey
Rookie: "Why did you bench me?"
Nellie: "Your a rookie"
ya
yah my second favorite team is the Magic.. and yes they were my second favorite before last season, before everyone jumped on the wagon.. and i also just bought a Kevin Martin jersey cause hes one of my favorite players
Durant is my favorite player that's not on the Warriors too.
He’s really hard to stop… a 6’9 Swingmen that can hit a jumper in your face consistently and has a very high rebounding rate.If he can develop a solid post game[yes even for a guard],he will be UNSTOPPABLE.
If he can learn to play defense, share the ball better, and rebound the ball better, he’ll be pretty awesome. As it is, even though he was much better last season than the season before, he’s still basically a glorified scorer who hurts his team, rather than helps it, every time he steps on the floor.
It says something that while LeBron is not nearly as sweet-looking an outside shooter as Durant, he’s a much, much better player in terms of contributing to wins. Indeed, by raw plus-minus last season he was by far the best regular player in the NBA in this regard; while Durant was the second-worst regular player in the NBA. (Yes, you read that right, though by Roland rating, which adjusts for the performance of his counterpart opposing player, he wasn’t quite that terrible). LeBron was also a much better player as a 20 year old than Durant was at the same age.
I like Durant and expect him to improve, but he’s clearly much more than “a solid post game” away from being “UNSTOPPABLE” — assuming “UNSTOPPABLE” relates in any way to winning basketball games.

I’m curious about this. I checked Durant’s stats, and he’s an efficient scorer (57% TS%) and while he’s worse than LeBron in rebounding (9.6%) and turnovers (12.2%), neither of those marks are especially bad, and he’s actually not far away from the King. Indeed, he graded above-average in those 3 measurables in my “TORTS system” calculation.
So what is it that makes him such a huge negative on the floor? Is he the worst defensive player in NBA history? Terrible passer? I’m wondering.
Thing C
Yeah, it weirded me out, too: up till I looked at the plus/minus numbers, I thought KD had really turned the corner from the previous season. Question for jae, obviously (I think I posed it to him before, but I forget his answer). My guess is some combo of (1) terrible defender; and (2) raw plus-minus, over the course of just one season, not being 100% reliable. If the plus/minus trends continue, Durant v. LeBron may serve as a shining paradigm of the importance of passing and defense and the failure of traditional hoops metrics.
There will be no extra point!
by Sleepy Freud on Jul 19, 2009 7:03 PM PDT up reply actions
I don’t doubt there’s some merit to the plus/minus stats, but I have a really hard time believing the second-worst player in the NBA could have a TS% of 57% on high shot volume. My eyes are open, though.
Thing C
Yeah, I’m sure raw plus/minus is flawed, but it’s hard to discount it completely when, despite being such a dumb, pure, and unrefined measurement, it spits out an NBA Top 8 of:
1. LeBron
2. CP3
3. Odom
4. Wade
5. Yao
6. Kidd
7. Kobe
8. Roy
Roland’s Top 8 seems a bit “truer,” if only cos it includes Howard and knocks down Odom and Kidd:
1. LeBron
2. Wade
3. CP3
4. Kobe
5. Roy
6. Howard
7. Yao
8. Garnett
Either way, the fact that Durant is middle-of-the-pack in the latter and downright terrible in the former must mean something, no?
There will be no extra point!
by Sleepy Freud on Jul 19, 2009 7:53 PM PDT up reply actions
Yeah, I’d be much more inclined to believe he’s middle of the pack than near the bottom. I’m not suggesting he’s a top-10 player, just that 2nd to last seems a bit low.
Thing C
I finally took the time and counted the rankings (by index finger, so I could be off by two or three):
By Roland rating, he was #72 out of 202 regular NBA players last season.
By plus-minus, he was #201 out of 202.
So yeah, I would think (and hope) that Roland’s closer to “reality.”
There will be no extra point!

its because pj played him at sg too much
at sg he cant guard anyone. at sf he is average.
he also is a better scorer from the 3 and 4 than the 2.

Nick Van Exel? why? You may as well get a Jamal Crawford jersey, he played way more games in a warriors uni than Van Exel did and at a was a better player here than Van Exel was.
Thing A
Funny you say that
I actually am getting a Crawford Warriors jersey. I"m pretty stoked about that. I wish Crawford well in the ATL.
faire enough. At least you’re consistent in your love for incredibly inconsistent and largely inefficient scoring guards who play less than a full season here.
Thing A
Can you post in any thread without being smug?
This guy’s talking about what jerseys he likes and here comes sam23 in all his condescending glory ready to disagree. Who deemed you the Jerseymaster General? If you only buy the jerseys of a player who’s career PER’s above 24 and who’s TS% is above 54 then hats off to you, but why even bother knocking another guy’s wardrobe?
I’m sorry if this post is petty but there’s a fine line between arguing over concrete statistics and arguing over which names are unacceptable on the back of jerseys. There isn’t an interesting Fanpost that passes through GSoM without sam23 dropping in from his higher plane of understanding to bless us dregs with his opinion infallible logic and ultimate truths.
You rarely make your own Fanpost. It must be easy sifting through other people’s diaries, waiting to rip the uninformed idiot who’s laughable opinion makes its way onto sam23’s site (Wait, this isn’t sam’s blog? My mistake.) What do you get out of trying to shame other Warrior fans into keeping their mouths shut? Every other post of yours has this unctuous, “Can you believe this guy?” tone. What’s the point?
I’m not saying I don’t respect your opinion, because I do. I just don’t understand why you, among other posters, go out of your way to talk down to people. It’s probably because you’re so much smarter than me but I’m having trouble understanding the correlation between disagreeing with someone and implying how stupid anyone who disagrees with you must be.
You’re just another fan, man. Get over yourself.

I won’t give you a rec ‘cos I’m a huge sam fan, but props for great use of “unctuous.”
Seriously, you must have missed Coma when he was at the height of his powers, or me when I’m in a crappy mood. By comparison, sam is downright gracious. I don’t deny that he sometimes seems like GSoM’s resident gatekeeper from BS, but for every poster who’s put off by his presumption in assuming that role, there’s probably another (like me) who thinks “man, it’s a tough job but somebody’s gotta do it!”
I dunno, as long as the tone is challenging rather than insulting, I think it’s great to call posters out on their questionable opinions. I think sam is always pretty clearly on the “challenging” side of that line (probably more so than me!) but I can see how it might rub some people the wrong way.

I agree with dubsfan for the most part (although I think he was a bit over the top in his tone). I don’t think a person’s choice of jersey name/number is something that can be “right” or “wrong” or “bad” or “good.” If a person thoroughly enjoyed Zarko Cabarkapa’s 98-game Warriors career and wanted to get a jersey, for whatever esoteric reasons, I don’t think anyone is to question that.
Thing C
True dat.
The only personalized sports paraphernalia I’ve bought since I was like 15 was a Youkilis t-shirt his rookie year with the Red Sox, 100% cos I thought it was a funny name and obscure enough to be “cool.” The fact that he had a rep as a disciplined hitter that could become a solid pro barely factored in. For the same reasons, I would definitely consider rocking a Cabarkapa or Mbenga Warriors jersey (THE CITY, natch)…

There was a dude at a game who sat in front of me with a Cabarkapa jersey

Wow, man, lighten up. I think a lot of people take me way too seriously or totally misunderstand me.
Nick the quick seems like a fairly odd/unique jersey choice, no? I can’t see anyone arguing that its not, in fact I’d bet that even GB would agree with me there. I’m not saying its stupid, just pointing out the oddity of it as he wasn’t exactly a great player here and he wasn’t here very long. One of my best friends has a Giants Shinjo jersey that I am insanely jealous of, but if I didn’t know the guy I’d laugh and ask why he chose Shinjo. In no way did I mean to say that his choice was unacceptable, and I’m not really sure where you got that from….its not like I said "Van Exel had a TS% of .487 here, Chris Mills would’ve been a better jersey and ur a idiot " I just thought that it was strange and made me laugh a little….. especially because more than one person has a Van Exel jersey. Seriously, that didn’t jump out as odd to you?
I was actually totally serious in that second response, yea it was a bit sarcastic, but I was totally serious…. If the gunner type guards appeal to him it makes a ton more sense that he would buy a Van Exel jersey. Seriously. He’d probably be first in line to buy a Joe Johnson jersey if we somehow signed him ‘10. If he argues that Van Exel, Crawford, or Joe J are respectively better players than Tim Hardaway, Monta Ellis, and D-Wade then I’ll probably turn on the “can you believe this guy” tone you despise so much. I never found Van Exel any more likable than you find me to begin with, but if I was still at an age where I enjoyed wearing jerseys I can easily imagine wanting a Jamal Crawford jersey. The guy was fun to watch and seemed like a genuinely good dude. I know you’ll find it hard to believe because you’ve already decided I’m a self-righteous prick, but I was seriously admiring GB’s consistency and I found his response to be pretty funny. If I wasn’t so put off by the usage of “lol” I probably wouldve thrown one in there and I guess it would’ve softened the tone a bit, in your mind insert a little ;-) there if it makes you feel better. GB and I don’t often see eye to eye but I really didn’t feel like either of us was being particularly hostile in that exchange.
As for your other points about me in general:
I rarely make my own fanposts because I generally recognize my own limitations of basketball knowledge. You’re right its far easier to rip someone else’s opinion to shreds than formulate your own, but challenging the opinions of others contributes more to the site than the habit of flinging some sh** against the fanpost wall just to see what happens that is now fairly common around here. In my opinion, there are far too many people here who post far too often and read, think and respond far too little. I know I’m not the most considerate poster, but I’m just not that sensitive of a person. If you can’t take some criticism and heckling you shouldn’t be posting in a forum for debate. I try to stay away from personal attacks (and I think I do a pretty good job of it), but I wouldn’t say that kind of restraint is one my strong points. If you’re going to be offended than do some thinking and perhaps even some research before posting and be prepared to defend your position with substance.
I’m not trying to get people to keep their mouths shut, I’m trying to get them to take advantage of and learn from the o-n-l-x-n, atma, jae and markdash types GSoM has to offer so what comes out of their mouths or keyboards the next time will be better. You don’t have to agree with the things and the rest of the GSoM regulars, but I guarantee that if you try you’ll learn something just about every time one of them posts something. I’ve been on the opposite side of at least one debate with all of them, and exchanged what were, in retrospect, overly harsh words with most of them. This doesn’t really apply to this type of thread at all, but if we all spent a little more time listening and reading what those guys say and really thinking about it the quality of discussion would rise dramatically and there would be no need for 90% of my posts. I never claim to know more about basketball than everyone here, but I have learned a lot in my time hanging around here and people who come in here and fail to do the same irk me a bit. You’ll notice that when the heavyweights all get together around an interesting subject I rarely chime in with much more than a +1, a rec, or a lame joke. Its fine if you’re ok with just letting people constantly spout and repeat uninformed opinions, but, again, this is a forum for fun and debate. I’m well aware that I take some of the fun out of it for those I challenge with my sometimes overly confrontational and often unrelenting approach, but I feel like (and, again this does not apply to this thread) too many stupid comments take the fun out of it for everyone.

Wow, Sam...
You seem to have made a few enemies around here lately. I’m not really sure what everyone is so upset about personally.
I never claim to know more about basketball than everyone here, but I have learned a lot in my time hanging around here and people who come in here and fail to do the same irk me a bit.
I try to be pretty easy going, but I have to say I also get irritated when people start posting without reading this site for a while first. I like it when someone brings a fresh perspective or some new insight to the discussion (honestly it would be very stale around here if we all agreed) but IMO new posters should take a little time to get acquainted before they try to become a major presence here. I know that’s what I tried to do. I must have read this site daily for months before I made my first comment. When I did finally start commenting it was only when I absolutely had something to say that I felt was being overlooked in a discussion, or had a question that I couldn’t get answered by reading the archives. My comments seemed to be pretty well received so I started posting a little more and eventually you start to build some credibility.
I still remember that you did basically the same thing. It wasn’t like one day you suddenly appeared posting in every thread with “thumbs down” pics and telling people they are full of it. You have earned the respect you have around here not only by consistently adding to the conversation, but also by graciously (for the most part =P) accepting criticism from others and admitting when you’ve been on the wrong side of an argument.
I think it’s safe to say that the people who don’t get you, and come to hasty conclusions about your character are only casual readers who haven’t consistently read your stuff. Everyone can come off a little harsh sometimes, but I certainly don’t think you deserve all the backlash you’ve received lately.
I guess we can use this as a reminder that a friendly attitude and an occasional :-) can help reduce the “smug” factor.
Thing 2
What I’ve noticed (and admittedly irritates me occasionally) is that he rarely seems to have his own opinion (in basketball-related discussions, I enjoy his input in non-basketball discussions because he brings new things from the table), he seems to mimic the popular opinion of the GSoM regulars. He never seems to express a certain opinion until after there is a general consensus of the “rock stars” (who usually have the most logical and thorough opinion), and then he seems to claim the opinion as his own and try and make people with differing opinions look stupid, even if he has to reach and find grammar mistakes. I’m fine with adjusting/altering one’s opinion after more information is put out, but if you never express your initial reactions to a subject until you basically know what is “safe” to say and at the same time jump on those who were bold enough to put their opinion out there, to me you just seem like you are riding other people’s reasoning and research skills to make a name for yourself. His role seems to be the guy who does not say what he thinks is right, but does tell everybody else (unless they are a respected GSoM member) why what they think is wrong. Also, when he challenges, he seems more condescending (though it is hard to interpret over the internet, and as he stated his reluctance to use “lol” and other phrases like that might and probably do contribute to this) to non-regulars, and respectful towards regulars. The change in demeanor towards people based on their community standing does seem pretty smug, it is as if he is deciding who is and who isn’t worthy of his respect on a public forum.
Basically, I am cool with people being placed on a pedestal if they have superior communication skills and excellent insight (Jae, Sleepy Freud), but I always am a little irritated by those who place them there, because they seem to be asking for inclusion by doing so.
But I hold no grudge towards anyone here, Sam included. When he does not act in what I perceive to be (and again, my perception may have a lot to do with his admitted reluctance to use internet expressions of tone like “lol” to compensate for the difficulty of detecting tone over the internet) this manner, I have no problem with him (which, as I said, seems to happen more on non-basketball related discussions where it is harder to determine who is the in-crowd and who isn’t).

The problem is that lately there hasn’t been a whole lot of good basketball related debate here. Honestly, IMO, there’s a pretty clear right and wrong on a lot of the issues and ideas that have been raised lately and I can’t help that I side with the more logical minds on such issues. I also can’t help that I’ve learned a lot from all those posters. They don’t not get the Commodus thumbs down because I like them, they don’t get it because they are almost always right and even if I do disagree with them they definitely put together a strong argument. What are some of the divisive issues where you could make a strong argument for either side where you think I’ve simply followed Sleepy, jae and the gang?
The Amare trade? Nobody was really all that far apart on that issue, but if I recall correctly I ended up on the opposite side of jae and Sleepy by saying I probably wouldn’t like it. I don’t really remember where cap, o.m., o-n, or the rest fell on that one.
Maggette? I assume DFiB falls under the “rockstar” category and we went back and forth all winter long. Did you miss that? I think I took a much stronger anti Maggette stance than any of the regulars until WS110 came along. I’ve since come to see that Maggette probably isn’t the very worst contract in the NBA, but I didn’t change my mind to conform, I just learned a little bit more about just how valuable a guy who scores that efficiently and racks up fouls for the other team can be. I’m sorry that I don’t always dig in and refuse to change my mind (though I think I usually do ; )) when I’m exposed to new information or a new perspective. If that makes me something of a conformist or an approval seeker, then that’s what I am.
Seriously, I’d love for you to provide some examples of where you see me as simply “following” the other Things because I just can’t really think of many examples of what you might be talking about.
Thing A

Exactly! I actually didn’t spend nearly enough time hanging around and reading others before I started posting. Most of my earlier posts were just awful…. but once I got over being upset about jae pointing out how wrong I was I really started to learn a lot. I really would prefer GB and some others do the same, but comments like this one:
I just let them say what they say, ignore it, and just post my opinion anywaydon’t make me all that confident that they will.
Its really not like I log on thinking “ooh who can I throw a thumbs down at today!!!!” Yea, I think the thumbs down is a funny and pretty concise way of expressing general disproval, but I’m not looking for any excuse to use it. I also don’t think its coincidence that the majority of the people who seem dislike my style are the same ones who consistently receive Commodus’ thumbs down.
Anyway, thanks for the support Mike.

Thing C
Yeah, that’s true.
By the way, my math is obviously wrong since more than 1% of men are black, but a lot of those guys can’t pull it off, either. Basically it’s really, really difficult to be more than about 25 years old and white and wear a jersey with looking like a total schlub.

I was looking for an Arenas Warriors throwback before, but never found an un-used one. Guess I have to wait till he retires. I’m proud knowing that he was once on the Warriors.

Nice! I was thinking about copping that after he won the dunk title a few years ago. Since we needed a pg before last year started, I was hoping we’d somehow make a trade for either Nate or Rafer Alston.

I have to say
Mostly heterosexually, that LeBron in that throwback Cavs jersey is a very handsome sight to behold.
If I were younger, taller, less pale, and chiselled out of solid rock, I’d def consider rocking that jersey.
There will be no extra point!

BIG BEN WALLACE
back in the pistons jersey where he belongs, an then my favorite player of all time K.G in the Timberwolves jersey, besides that its all warriors.
I have a number of opinions on the topic. My first reaction to sporting another team’s jersey is no, you should not do that. Giving it some thought, though, given the difficulty of finding a good Warrior that sticks around for a while, I can at least see an argument to go that way, but I still don’t accept it. The team you root for is the most important thing – you should always be displaying your support for the Dubs. Team USA jerseys are always acceptable, can’t fault someone for that. I’m also ok with rocking a retired players jersey, if you have a Jordan or Bird or Magic or Russell or any other retired player, that’s cool with me ‘cause that’s pretty sweet to have a jersey like that, just no active players that have no Bay Area connection.
Furthermore, I’m ok with throwbacks from other teams. If you like some other teams throwback jersey, and want to sport it, go for it, just get a player from that era on the back. Finally, the most important opinion of all, you should never play basketball in NBA jerseys. I’m sorry, that’s just bush league. I’m having a hard time finding a good term to use to talk about how poor they are for basketball performance, but I’m not coming up with anything good. So…they are not good for basketball performance. You don’t need to make a statement with what you wear playing ball, you need to make a statement with your game.
Yeah, I’m kinda with that, I have some nice generic Warriors gear that I wear all the time but not an individuals.
I was, however looking for a Morrow J after the Clips game last year and still might get one. I like to pull for guys who were undrafted and who have worked their tails off to make it. And if he lights it up this year, all the better.
There's a party in my mind.
And I wish that I was there.
NON-WARRIORS JERSEYS I ROCKED BACK IN THE DAYS WERE...
J.R. Rider T-Wolves (blue)
Penny Hardaway Magic (black)
Scottie Pippen Bulls (red)
Scottie Pippen Bulls – Retro w/ cursive lettering (black)
Scottie Pippen USA (blue)s
Didn’t have the flow back in the days to get authentic ones, but I use to rock those Champion brand ones! =P
Geeez Louf*ckingweeez!!!
Is Scottie Pippen your favorite ever?
If so, nice! He’s the reason why I even got into basketball at all.
I have
Mike Bibby (Kings ’03) (went to Davis for a stretch)
D-Wade (Heat ’04)
I still want a Dirk jersey for when I’m playing. I am a big-man shooter who is allergic to the post.
I know someone who got a Diogu jersey!

when you reply to something...
After the “B” (Bold), “I” (Italic), and S with a dash through it (Strike)… hit the tree button. That’s “Image,” and then paste the URL to the picture. Hope that helps.
Oh yeah.
I had kind of assumed he had that part of the problem worked out, but thanks for spelling things out. Maybe you should also mention that he needs to be on a computer when he does the posting?
