Could we have gotten Ariza?
Ariza in the past few seasons has been a very consistent player. He especially did excellent in the finals of both seasons. This is probably waste of a post because it seems as though he is going to Houston while Artest is going to LA.

The reason for me posting this is because I kind of just wanted to see if people [like me] would have been glad to sign Ariza. He is very athletic, a hard worker, and get this he can play DEFENSE! I know that we probably don't need a SF atm because Jack might start at SFagain because we picked up Step Curry and Maggs has been doing great as a 6th man. But if we are trying to make Curry into a PG I think picking up Ariza would have been helpful.
Our Line up would look something like...
PG: Monta, Curry, CJ Watts
SG: Capt. Jack, Morrow, Belinelli
SF: Ariza or KaZ , Maggs
PF: Randolph, Wright, Davidson, (Rob Kurz...WHO!?!?! only in spirit haha)
C: Biens, Turiaf
Oh and it never hurts to have more players that could do this...
Just Saying..
well i would probably try to go in-depth with all my reasons for wanting Ariza, but seeing as thought he is very likley going to the rockets Im Done.

I'm no cap guru
Do we have the cap room to sign a player like Ariza?
I’ve personally always been high on Trevor Ariza. After listening to Tony Bruno thrash him on talk radio, saying how Artest is such a player to have on your team, I’m not so sure that is the case. Artest may have his best years behind him in terms of being a candidate for defensive player of the year. I think Ariza is on the up and up. He reminds me a lot of Tracy McGrady in his early career.
They both share the same kind of athleticism and agility in that slender 6-8 frame. But yeah, I think Ariza would’ve been great on this team.

He was signed with their mid-level exception, though, so I guess JayDeeAye is saying that we could’ve used our mid-level exception to sign him.

Do we have the cap room to sign a player like Ariza?
Short answer: No. He goes to franchise that has proven they know how to field a competitive team even without their stars and he’ll likely start. Most reports indicate the Cavs were the other team where there was serious mutual interest. We would have had to outbid the Rockets and the Cavs by at least a little to make him even consider coming here….the best we coulda done was offer more years, but that wouldn’t necessarily be appealing to a younger player like Ariza.

If the report is true and Ariza signed a 5-year deal, then no, we could not have offered a longer deal. That’s the maximum length a team can offer another team’s free agent.

yep,
the only we could of gotten him is if we hooked him up with a Maggette like overpay.

Which is also impossible considering the Warriors are over the cap.
The REAL only way to get Ariza would be to an extravagant sign-and-trade.

A sign and trade would have been almost as impossible. If he got a big raise, he’d have been BYC, making the numbers in a deal for him near impossible to work. And since if the Lakers weren’t going to keep him, they didn’t want the salary above the lux tax, they weren’t going to want a sign and trade to bring back salary
.
We had no shot at him.

hmmm….I happen to think Artest’s physical nature will be really good for the Lakers, but the stats from last year don’t really support your claim.

On ball defense is hard to mesure,
If Artest was brought in specifically to shut down Roy, Jefferson, Carter, and James and let Bryant focus on the offensive side of the ball, than Artest is the better player.

Ariza seems like a great player for a contender
with players who can create open shots for him. Put on our team, he might be forced to create for himself, and he doesn’t have much success doing that.

Ariza is a role player highlighted by playing with 3 All*Stars.
He’s great when he’s the 5th best player in your starting 5 but any higher and you are fooling yourself on what this guy can do. He’s a younger Bruce Bowen, nothing more, nothing less.

...
Except that Ariza’s a bit longer and more athletic than Bowen was, a much better and more efficient scorer, a much better rebounder, a better passer, and better at getting steals and blocks.
I’d say that counts as “more.” And hey, there ain’t nothing wrong with a young Bruce Bowen.

He’s also a better player than Derek Fisher so he’s already been the 4th best player in the starting lineup of a championship winning team…..or were they fooling themselves?

In a way, it reminds me of the need versus best player available debate. Ariza seems like a need player, who is a great fit on a contending team. He can focus on what he does best and do that extremely well.. He doesn’t seem like a player that would thrive for a losing team, because their needs are pretty much everything, and he doesn’t seem to be the right player to fill in an “everything” role.
This coming year, I think Houston will resemble a losing team and not a contending one. Out of their big three, one got traded, one got injured for the year, and one has been injured. Mutombo’s done. They’ve got a few nice pieces with Landry, Brooks, Scola, and Battier. I guess the lineup would be Scola at center, Landry at PF, Battier/Ariza at SF and SG, and Brooks at PG. They would have an undersized center and PF, and frankly their starting 5 just does not look that good. Then when it comes to bench depth, I guess they have Lowry and…who else? Unless Scola and Landry are going to play 48 minutes a night for 82 games, who are their backup big men? 6’6 Chuck Hayes playing center? That’s just way too small of a team.
Ariza is going to have to do more for this team. He won’t be getting as many wide open kickout three pointers from big men, he won’t be getting open shots from defenders doubling Kobe. I give him a lot of credit, he made those shots when they were presented to him in the playoffs, not an easy feat. But now he is going to have to get his own shots, and I don’t think he’ll be nearly as effective doing so.
Maybe Houston can rebuild quickly or McGrady/Yao will come back and an unheralded young guy of theirs will step up (Joey Dorsey anyone?) Likely though, they are a falling star, and Ariza will find life off of a contender is harder for a “team needs” player.

Seems this is how we got ourselves into this mess.
Just what this team needs another wing tweener that really has no true poistion, nor no track record of playing more then 6th man minutes. We have enough tweener athletes on our team. What we need a big ugly who can bang down low not another perimeter player.

SHawn Marion
He will fit right into our system and he could be a great deal. Plus his defense is stellar. I say the warriors try for this guy.
