Matt Steinmetz on The Razor and Mr. T 7/23/09 (mp3) [KNBR 680]
Matt Steinmetz provides a ton of insider insights about the Golden State Warriors in this audio clip. He also sounds very frustrated with this team. Can't say I blame him.

I use to not like Mat S. But he’s been on point lately

I agree with Matt Steimetz on a three-for-one trade.

Why did we match CJ?
And as for stars Ellis will not be any were near Kobe, Wade etc. But in terms of how much he means to our team maybe like an Igudola or a Roy. But Randolph in all honesty could be like a Garnett, or like an Odom. I say don’t renew Marco, and get rid of CJ, maybe Wright and do everything possible to lose Maggs. Even explore trading Curry for Rondo if possible. But of course it would not be a one for one switch.

we didn't match CJ
We made him an initial qualifying offer – he hasn’t accepted any offers from other teams yet.
The reason to sign CJ is probably because he is “proven” and probably tradeable given the interest he is getting. Wether that is a good idea is questionable.

garnett or odom
are you saying he could be superstar like garnett or an inconsistent, occasionally brilliant player like Odom?
Curry for Rondo?!?!?!? Isn’t the fact that Boston is trying to trade Rondo a hint that maybe he’s not that valuable?
let curry play for a month before starting the ship him out bandwagon. he just might be really good…

Curry for Rondo?!?!?!? Isn’t the fact that Boston is trying to trade Rondo a hint that maybe he’s not that valuable?
No, it’s a hint that maybe they’re not actually trying that hard to trade him. At the outside, it’s a hint that they’re aware that his increasingly dominant performance might lead him to demand a max contract, and that there’s no harm in testing the waters to see just how valuable a 23-year-old Top 5 NBA PG might be to other teams. Either way, the only “hint” anyone should need about valuable he is is a very casual glance at at his numbers, or an even more casual glance at the havoc he wreaks at both ends of a basketball court.
Even if Curry is “really good” the chances that he’ll ever be as valuable as Rondo are not really good. If the Celtics are insane enough to offer Rondo for Curry you make that deal 24/7 — even if it you’re not sure you can extend Rondo. Who knows, maybe if we hold onto his ol’ pal Kelenna, make a concerted effort to shed salary, and convince him that his crazy athleticism and breakneck speed is perfect fit for Nellieball (which it is), we can lock him down for something less than max. Rondo (23) / Monta (23) / Morrow (23) / Buike (25) / Wright (21) / Randolph (20) / Turiaf (26) / Biedrins (23) is the fixins for something pretty good. Could use a bit more beef, maybe, but Curry would be almost completely superfluous.
There will be no extra point!

Curry for Rondo?
Two Curr-burys for one Rondo would be a steal.

I'm not jumping ship
I think he is a top 5 point guard and he is already proven. I am just saying that he would be a nice player. And as for Randolph I was just saying the type of stardom he will reach, not production.

He's not the most optimistic guy
But his opinions are well thought out and hard to argue with, the future is looking better than next year. But with luck and some solid development from the key youngsters and i think the playoffs are within sight, maybe a trade will be necessary but we’ll see
This is our year

I wish I saw more patience
So few people seem willing to wait on the current talent (No one from the core is even 25 yet). I just pray the Ws don’t make their signature mistake of chucking young talent overboard.

That was a good listen from Steinmetz
I forgot who here used the Batman and Robin analogy, but we definitely have a roster full of Robins and no real Batmans on our team right now. There isn’t anyone who can command a double team right now.
The closest person who can do that would be Monta Ellis, but he has to prove that he has fully regained his quickness and agility to speed around defenders, not to mention his midrange shot. Even then, Monta will have to prove he can consistently pass it to the right man when double teamed. Jackson could command a double team, but that’s usually bad because he dribbles into trouble and turns it over. Biedrins, no. Randolph, not right now. Curry, don’t know, probably not in his 1st season.
Turiaf, no. Wright, maybe if he develops some unblockable hook shots, otheriwse no. Maggette, maybe, but only helps us because he’ll get to the FT line, not because he’ll pass it. Buike, no. Morrow, no. Marco, no. Speedy, doubt it. Law, doubt it. CJ (if he plays for us), no.

i might be wrong but...
… I feel we have gone awfully quiet recently in trade talks and frankly there isn’t much available as far as free agents go. I’m starting to get the feeling that what we have right now might be what we will see on opening night and beyond.
Maybe Riley is waiting to see how Monta comes back from the injury this season to see if he gains some more value. If he does, I think we can’t keep curry and monta because imo they are too similar of players and such a small backcourt won’t be an ideal fit. So i’d be willing to trade monta if the appropriate value is available because I have lost a lot of admiration for how he handled the moped incident.
The only player I see as untouchable is Randolph.

Which is why we have several nice expiring contracts
So we can trade (since most free agents resign or go to playoff teams)

not usually a steinmetz fan
but maybe he’s better on radio than he is on tv. that was a good listen and i agreed with pretty much everything. i especially liked what he said about randolph, finally someone shedding some truth on the hype coming out of the meaningless summer league

Several Sarcastic Comments more or less....
First, I paid a lot of money early on just to not listen to the Razor. Now I remember why;
Second, without a coach who creates and supports a team concept and vision without a bunch of gimmicks and who creates a starting rotation with players always knowing their roles and so on, the players will remain rudderless and in troubled waters.
What did make sense is the three for one to clear out the problem of minutes to go around. It would be great if Maggette was one of the three cause Matt just nailed it when he said guys like Maggette and Jackson just aren’t good enough to deserve to play 35 minutes plus a game. The best players on our team just aren’t game changers and at best role players on any really good team, which clearly we aren’t.
We are just so screwed for year to come unless Riley can unravel the mess that Rowell has created.

We need a Superstar, the thing is do they want to be here?
Lets be honest, three to one sounds really good, but who in the World wants to come and play for this organization? I seriously understand why Amare choose to stay with Phoenix rather than the Warriors. Play for Steve Nash or Ellis? Listen unless we get a true PG that everyone would love to play with him, no low post scorer would wanna play with a project player like Ellis. Hence, my first move would be to try trade players like Law, Claxton, CJ (if he stays), Rocky, Wright. That is if we get lucky to trade them. Warriors really needed distributors like Session and Miller whom can flourish in our system. Nevertheless, I understand that everything does happen the way it is suppose to.
My trade proposal would be Wright, Law, Claxton for a sign and trade Lee. But next year Warriors will be over the Cap, so is Lee worth the money say $9. I think if he can lead the league in doubles, he deserves it and he would fit our system.

*sigh* I remember when
Troy Murphy led the league in double doubles….although I do like Lee much better and he still has room for improvement. Harrington is no doubt bad mouthing the W’s organization in New York though, not that Lee would have much say in a sign and trade.
Wonder what Option Zero's new screen name is....

Lee
what makes it also reasonable to conduct this trade is that NY needs some players. They do need PG and also a frontcourt player. Their summer league showing with five loses demonstrates the need for new faces. A three to one deal with expiring contracts that gives them the flexibility to go after Lebron or Wade next year would be a perfect deal in imo. Imagine maybe something like Claxton, Marco (an Italian who will be close to home playing with an Italian player and coach) and Wright for Lee would be perfect. Murphy and Lee are entirely different players, Lee is aggressive, hustler and better team defender than Murphy. Lee also scores with his low post moves while Murphy usually tries to knock out jumpers. Therefore Lee can help us defensively and contribute offensively since he will be the only player with low post moves.

Beef or Brain
Everyone keeps talking about the beef and we sure need it. But we also need someone who can make plays, not turnovers. And we aren’t going to be able to count on our guard line for that. That means we need a small forward to run the offense through. And we don’t have one of those either. Randolph someday but not yet. I mention the small forward because the Dubs seem determined to use Monta at the point and that’s not going to lead to a lot of plays. Jax averaged 6.5 assists last year, which is great, but the turnovers were not so hot. This team needs more than beef. It needs a head to run it from some position,

this is a terrible interview
honestly, what did we learn from Steinmetz but that we have an unproven roster? No crap. He doesn’t analyze the game, specific skills for specific players. Every bit of analysis is “good” or “pretty good” or “not bad”. Such a boring listen.
