The Golden State Warriors have agreed to trade Marco Belinelli to Toronto for Devean George, league sources tell Y! Sports.

We've just been robbed. I think we could have gotten someone way better than Devean George. What is the front office thinking?!

this is not like the two Giants trades

At least Garko and Sanchez are now the best 2B and 1B we have (and probably the 2nd and 3rd best hitters on the team).

Devean George is our 15th man.

The guy was hitting .274 a week ago and his batting average went up to .285 because of the left-handed pitching he saw. The Indians faced nine consecutive straight left-handed pitchers.

For your sake, I hope not. If you’re going to drop dough on a jersey, I hope you at least have enough sense to get a good player, like Lincecum, Cain, or Sandoval. Heck, Jonathan Sanchez isn’t even good but at least he threw a no-hitter so he’ll be remembered.

I’m sure Marco wanted to play with Bargnani and vice versa. I don’t think this was to improve our team at all. We weren’t going to use Marco, other than as trade bate anyway. He’ll be happy in Toronto and get MUCH more playing time. It’ll fun to watch them now. This is good for the NBA, as Italian fans will be huge on one particular team. It’ll be cool

Why is it...

That every time there’s a change or even a rumor of a change someone throws up a mock roster.

by FiveAlarmFreddy on Jul 29, 2009 8:20 PM PDT up reply actions

context?

thinking about the rotation? trying to predict the impact on the team?

by ninjasocks on Jul 29, 2009 8:31 PM PDT up reply actions

What does that have to do with anything?

People post mock rosters because they care about the team and want to figure out how roster changes will affect it. While the effects of this trade may be minor, jandaman! is obviously interested in figuring out what the result may be.

What’s the point of calling out someone for being too interested in the team? Its not like he’s dissing a player or suggesting a turrable trade (i.e. Maggette for Wade or Beans for Bobby Jackson and a Tab). My suggestion: save the fire for the really bad comments.

Now the Warriors have a expiring contract to use in a trade.

by houseofprime on Jul 29, 2009 7:39 PM PDT reply actions

But Marco already was an expiring

The guy had a team option- that’s even better than an expiring. Plus, this team already has Claxton and Law who can combine to get someone.

trade Claxton and Law when they both haven’t played in the past two years and haven’t proven themselves. Claxton has proven himself from years past but not recently from those injuries

by deandres2k on Jul 29, 2009 8:33 PM PDT up reply actions

If you're trading expirings like Devean George

You’re not doing it because the other team wants him- you’re just doing it to save them money in the long term, getting talent in return.

There’s a reason why Raef LaFrentz was a valued asset at the deadline last year, and most of me doubts it was his balling ability.

We just swapped end of the bench expiring contracts, and gave up a guy who might be able to do something and is still young and can improve for a player that does not bring a single positive skill to the table. George is awful, I cannot emphasize that enough, and at this much he doesn’t even provide a whole lot offensively. Granted, it will probably be pretty inconsequential (though with injuries maybe not), but this is the first real move to judge Riley on, and it’s a resounding F. And I hate Devean George, so, so much. So yes, I am extremely upset.

In comparison, I hated Fisher when he was on other teams, but loved him as a Warrior! If George sticks around, hopefully he gives me a reason to like him on our team, when I use to hate him on other teams!

What we got in return is a player who will sit on the bench and attract no criticism because of it. Dub fans were always complaing about Marco sitting, Marco was probably unhappy and Nellie probably wasn’t happy dealing with it. I think it’s good for the team. Not so much for the fans in a way. We didn’t lose much, though. I don’t care. We have Morrow, Jack and Buike to play the 2.

Its not like we traded randolph for kyle Korver. I really don’t think they would do such a trade without reason especially if Riley is as conservative in deals as he claims he is. Marco was not gonna play much anyways. Also, they will probably either ship out his expiring or buy him out.

Give me one reason why losing your mind over trading Marco Belinelli away from this team makes sense. Just one. I’m not saying I love this trade, but I don’t believe George’s expiring deal has much (if any) less value than Marco.

Thing A

by sam23 on Jul 29, 2009 8:10 PM PDT up reply actions

Because of Freddie Sanchez. Because I hate Devean George. Brian Sabean. It’s been a bad day. :(

But seriously, if I was actually analyzing this trade, my question would be…why? There just isn’t a reason. I wasn’t planning on giving Riley much of a chance anyways, but now might look like I’m actually right. Belinelli might never play, but the 1% chance something happens and he gets significant minutes is enough to be like…wtf.

by Missing Barry on Jul 29, 2009 8:13 PM PDT up reply actions

y’re missing two trades then …

Sanchez is going to make the SFG better now, Alderson might have made them as good as they are now if he’d reached the majors later

Marco was not, is not, and would never have lived up to the hard-ons so many on this site had for him whether at SG or more poignantly at PG, while George is depth at SF and an expiring – both assets that will likewise make this team better now

by hardcore on Jul 29, 2009 10:10 PM PDT up reply actions

First of all, I did the analysis in this post on why Sanchez was a bad value. Alderson was worth more than Sanchez is going to give the Giants. Unless Sanchez is a 4 WAR a year guy for the Giants, he will not give us equal value, and even then, the downside risk of him underperforming compared to the minimal chance he overperforms still keeps it from being equal.

Second, I agree about Marco, I was never a huge fan. But he is unquestionably better than George, and has almost the exact same contract. This move put $1.6M in Cohan’s pockets, and that’s all it accomplished. As a team, it will likely make no difference to the Warriors, but in the improbable chance the injury bug hits us hard, it will make us worse. Period. There is no argument.

by Missing Barry on Jul 29, 2009 10:13 PM PDT up reply actions

I mean, I suppose there’s a chance we use that money for good. You can call me skeptical. If there’s one thing I’ve learned over the years, it’s to be skeptical of a Cohan run franchise.

meh...

In an emergency, we can pick up D-league players. If we get so injured that Marco is playing a lot, instead of Monta, Morrow, ’buike, Jackson, Watson or even Maggette, Marco is not going to save us, anyway. LOL

by Naticus on Jul 29, 2009 10:30 PM PDT up reply actions

first there is WAY too much noise in this thread for me to find your analysis, and we disagree – Sanchez is going to pay dividends now, while Alderson might have later

second, we’d have to have injuries to Monta, Morrow, Curry, KAz, AND either Jackson or Maggette for Marco’s absence to even be a blip on the radar

sorry MB, but the angst over Marco on this site is off the charts, I’m not trying to pick a fight with you personally, just see things differently on today’s transactions

by hardcore on Jul 29, 2009 10:37 PM PDT up reply actions

True, clearly overreacting to the trade, it’s really not much of a big deal, but I still hate it. Basically the baseball analysis part – Sanchez has to be worth 5 wins (total, which means abut 4 wins a year) to equal Alderson’s expected value (which takes into account the high probability he turns into nothing). Sanchez is 31, put up a total of .4 WAR last year, and is on pace for maybe 3 WAR this year. It’s very unlikely he gives us equal value. Very, very unlikely.

I don’t mind the concept of trading Alderson. The fact that we traded Barnes and Alderson and got back Garko and Sanchez, though, is completely awful. They would have been the nice start in a package for a legitimate All-star.

agreed on the last part, but what legit All-star is really available that would help us and at a position that we need, and that we could have gotten for B&A? this is the wrong thread for this obviously … anyway, this trade really is a breath of fresh air for MB, he gets a chance to prove he should stay on this side of the pond with a team that he couldn’t have picked a better situation if he’d engineered the trade himself.

There’s never a wrong place for Giants discussion. Victor Martinez is someone that comes to mind, and we know the Indians are making anyone available (for cheap, too, based on Cliff Lee). I’d rather gone after him instead of Garko/Sanchez.

Last year, per 36 minutes, he averaged the following:

7.5 points, 4.0 rebounds, .8 assists, 1.2 steals, .6 blocks, .9 turnovers, 2.9 fouls. He doesn’t do a single thing! His TS% was .485. 29% from 3 point range. 38% FG overall. I guess he did shoot 77% from the line, on 1 FTA per 36 minutes…

Now i'm reallllyyyy scared.......

for Brandan Wright. If they are willing to give Bellinelli up for a scrub, does the same happen to Brandan? We all know that Nellie wants to clear all of Mullins draft choices.

Now I ask the following: What the “HELL” is Devean going to do for our team? Did we just trade so that he could be a bench warmer?

At this point I am willing (as much as it hurts me to say this) to have Brandan back up Randolph, but please dont trade him. He still has upside!!!!!

But it’s still no reason to give him up for nothing. Why not let him ride the bench here, see what happens, and if nothing does, let his deal expire?

by Rotudo on Jul 29, 2009 8:15 PM PDT up reply actions

Exactly, I don’t care much about Belinelli, I just don’t see the point of this. If we just let him sit on the bench and his contract expire, great, that’s better than trading him for Devean George. If we plan on using their expiring contracts for trades, they have almost the same contract, so that accomplishes nothing. In fact, trading for George puts restrictions on our ability to trade him for a while, if I’m not mistaken.

by Missing Barry on Jul 29, 2009 8:17 PM PDT up reply actions

Like I said above, I don’t recall seeing George play at all last year, but I’m guessing he’s probably our 2nd best perimeter defender. Does this team not need to get a little better defensively?

On our roster are we more likely to see injuries open up minutes at SF or SG?

Thing A

by sam23 on Jul 29, 2009 8:19 PM PDT up reply actions

I hope we don’t open up minutes for Devean George. I prefer winning…

Ok, in all seriousness, even assuming George contributes a bit on defense, you can read the numbers he posted last year. Those were insanely bad, to the point where you can’t even argue against how bad they were. Does that not support that Devean George is very, very not good? He averaged 16.5 minutes a game over 43 games to do that, so it wasn’t like a bad 10 game stretch or anything…

by Missing Barry on Jul 29, 2009 8:22 PM PDT up reply actions

I have yet to argue that George is anywhere near decent offensively. I also have yet to argue that its a GOOD trade. (well for me it is because I hate the “Belinelli is awesome!!!! threads” that pop up once a month) I’m just saying that Jackson, Buike and Maggette are a whole lot more likely to go down with injuries next year than Morrow, Curry, and Monta. We got slightly bigger and probably worse. I highly doubt Belinelli had more trade value than a similarly sized expiring. The impact either guy will/would’ve had on the team is so miniscule that this is certainly not worth getting upset about.

Well, it’s a bad trade, and probably miniscule and not worth getting upset about. Never said I was being rational about this (just temporarily for my one comment below). I’m upset because of what the Giants did, and this just made it worse.

That phrase made me laugh. I can’t quite explain why, but it’s just one of the most ridiculous things I’ve read on the interweb. Just being realistic here, Belinelli probably didn’t have any more trade value than what we got ($1.6M). If you read the comments in this thread you’d know that I was clearly the first person to come out on the side of “calm the f down, this trade is completely meaningless and thus not horrible.” Atma’s thread came quite a bit later. Who are the other “big time posters”? Missing Barry isn’t one? We clearly disagree (though its a small disagreement) on this trade. Like Atma, WS110 and hardcore came in much later with opinions similar to mine. Sleepy is with Missing Barry opposing this trade and jae seems to be leaning that way slightly as well. ugh

We traded a guy who was gonna be lucky to get more than 200 total minutes next year for another guy who probably won’t get 200 minutes. Neither guy was/is gonna be with the team after next year. The guy we got is older and worse offensively. The guy we traded away is smaller and worse defensively. The contracts are similar. Its not a great trade. Its also not a horrible trade. Its probably a little bit closer to bad as we gave up the younger player, but neither guy would/will have much of an impact on this team. Ever. Just calm down. I think I need to leave this thread as attempting to talk all those who possess irrational Belinelli love off the ledge is giving me a headache.

Thing A

by sam23 on Jul 29, 2009 8:25 PM PDT up reply actions

Sam, just for your sake, I’ll give you a little bit of rational thought here. Marco is not that good, it’s not a terrible thing that we traded him. In the end, the trade will likely be completely inconsequential. You’re right. But facts are facts, and Marco is a much better player. He was a significantly more efficient scorer last year, while averaging almost twice as many points per 36 minutes. Slightly less rebounds, but they’re probably equally bad for their positions considering Belinelli is a 2 and George a 3. Belinelli averaged over 4 times as many assists per 36. More steals. Less blocks! .6 to 0! More turnovers for Belinelli, same number of fouls. I’d put them on a pretty equal defensive field – George is slow and old at this point, and I never thought he was great (though obviously he did contribute). But yes, again, it’s probably inconsequential. It’s just…why make it? Belinelli is better and younger. Contracts are basically equal. What’s the point?

by Missing Barry on Jul 29, 2009 8:32 PM PDT up reply actions   1 recs

again, who is more likely to get hurt? Jackson, Buike and Maggette or Monta, Curry and Morrow? at 3 inches taller and 30 lbs heavier I’d argue that even if George has slowed significantly in the last year+ I’d still argue he’s much better suited to defend big 2’s and 3’s.

Thing A

by sam23 on Jul 29, 2009 8:36 PM PDT up reply actions

Eh defensively I think Morrow and Buike can do fine, at least against big 2’s and normal 3’s. I guess if you’re thinking more along the lines of big 3’s like Turkoglu or Rashard Lewis or something, you might have a point. If George rebounded well for a 3, I’d be more inclined to agree with you. Maybe last year was a fluke, he was better before that…

I can’t see any upside in this trade whatsoever. It boggles the mind.

We traded a young lottery talent with potential (no matter how small or large) for a bad player at the tail end of his bad career.

The franchise didn’t save any money. We didn’t trade for a better contract. If anything, Belinelli’s was better because it included restricted free agency.

Yeah in terms of actual basketball talent, maybe we didn’t lose much. But at the very least, we lost a potentially valuable trading chip. For nothing.

He was irrelevant to the Warriors, almost. Now that we have Curry and want Morrow to develop, he would’ve been worse than irrelevant. by Bob on Jul 29, 2009 8:54 PM PDT up reply actions

yep, extra cash in a trade of two guys who weren’t/aren’t getting any minutes anyway. we lose on the talent end of this, but trading davidson for me would have amounted to about as much in the short term and long term if the team had done that last year. it’s a pretty meaningless trade.

Hey Warrior Fan!!

Get off your own players nuts for just a second, Marco was going to be glued to the bench if he had stayed, period Next, George has an expiring contract and won’t get his panties in a bunch if he’s not playing (unlike Marco). Marco had his chances but Morrow beat him out! Now Steph Curry, Morrow, StackJack, Maggs, and Monta can get the proper minutes without inner team conflict

by Brothaplease09 on Jul 29, 2009 8:27 PM PDT reply actions

So because we’re not going to play him, it makes sense to trade him for a worse player we won’t play?

Who knows what will come next? Bosh for AB and Maggs to make it even?

by farid on Jul 29, 2009 8:50 PM PDT up reply actions

exactly, today’s Giants/Pirates swap shows that professional sports teams DO remember if they owe another franchise anything from a previous trade. If Belinelli turns into Jason Schmidt I fully expect to get Barganani’s deal dumped on us in a couple years and then, a couple years later, get an early lottery selection in exchange for a salary dump.

He won't play.

I think we will have a buyout similar to Wallace in Phoenix. If not he can be trade bait packaged with Wright. But yes teams seem to have valued Marco much more then us and we could have gotten much better. Overall this has no affect on us and a huge effect on Toronto. I honestly no little to nothing about his personality, maybe he is a good guy in the locker room? But I know he is VERY SLOW now so Nelly will not play him in a FAST break offense.

He was down to about #4. and falling like a rock

by crab dribble cocktail on Jul 29, 2009 9:54 PM PDT up reply actions

Baseball America literally just ranked him the #2 prospect in our system. On July 9th. They had him Top 25-50 overall. Also, that other quote Giants fans got upset about said he was a back of the rotation guy but still a sure thing major league starter. That’s still a good prospect.

by Missing Barry on Jul 29, 2009 9:55 PM PDT up reply actions

He was fourth overall once you factor in hitters Buster Posey and Angel Villalona. He was still second among the pitchers.

The Ultimate Opportunist

by Rated-R Superstar on Jul 29, 2009 9:56 PM PDT up reply actions

True, #4 overall, I meant to say #2 pitching prospect.

by Missing Barry on Jul 29, 2009 9:58 PM PDT up reply actions

I could care less what Alderson becomes. Given the unpredictable nature of prospects, it’s a bad way of thinking if you only judge on whether the prospect pans out or not. Here’s an alternative approach:

Go here for the research

Alderson, as a top 25-50 pitching prospect in the minors (2 weeks ago Baseball America pegged him as such), is worth somewhere between $12.1 and $15.9 million dollars in trade value. In essence, this means the pieces we have to get back give us that amount of value, in addition to enough value to cancel their contract out. We owe Sanchez about $10M over this year and next, so he has to give us about $22-$25M in value, which is about 5 wins. Sanchez is already 31, having a better year this year than he did last year, and still is not on pace to be that valuable of a player. This was a TERRIBLE trade valuewise for the Giants.

Trade Details

Marco’s contract was fully guaranteed this year, George’s is not. This gives the Warriors 11.6M in expiring contracts this year, including 8M to Speedy and George that can be bought out this year. Utah is looking for cap relief this year. Boozer makes 12.6M…

by dubzfan on Jul 29, 2009 10:00 PM PDT reply actions

I don’t get it. Just because we are only changing backup players doesn’t mean it doesn’t matter if it isn’t a good move. Unless, and I doubt either of these would be the case, some team that we are going to make a big deal with was coveting George and will trade with us now that we obtained him or some free agent would only play here at a low price if we had George, I just don’t get it. We have Jackson, Maggette, Azubuike, and potentially Randolph at the 3, and in Nellie’s lineups I’m sure Morrow might even see some time there as well. So, while we do have an excess of guards, it’s not like we had a dearth of small forwards (that’s what George is right?). I just don’t see a single way George will be better for us than Belinelli would have, or how George could be a better trading piece. George is growing farther away from his prime every day, while Belinelli is growing towards it. I just don’t get it.

I don’t care if it makes us ONLY slightly worse. The question that should be asked after every trade should be, how does this trade make us better, either now or in the future?

I would love to hear why this trade makes us better, because I don’t see a single way, so someone make me feel better about it.

Cartier Martin

Just a hunch, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the W’s said “adios” to George to clear a roster spot for Cartier Martin. He’ be cheap, and he has potential.

I was at 4/5 Summer League games in LV, and Martin looked really good. He’s a slightly bigger version of Kelenna (last year measuring at 6’7, 220, though I think he’s bigger than that now). He’s cut like a mack truck and he can rebound decently and hit the 3. He was our #3 scorer at LVSL, and he looked good. Averaged 21 pts and 5 rebounds in the D-League last year, and before that played with Beasley at K-State.

Martin has already played in Europe, with Antalya, in Turkey, averaging 9ppg.
