When Will Players Want To Play Here?
I've been reading the headlines a lot lately, especially with the 09-10 season right around the corner and I am just unhappy. I love the Warriors and I love the game of basketball, but I'm just flat out unhappy with the Warriors as a whole organization. The one and only person who deserves credit for our playoff run in 07 is Chris Mullin. There should be no disagreement with me there, but Chris is gone. Unfortunately. So now after two disappointing seasons, hopeful seasons, yet disappointing, its time for another free agency. I remember last year all the hype over Brand and the Warriors keeping Baron Davis and forming a nice team for a playoff run, but that didnt pan out. Now there's talk about Amare coming here, although those claims have been demolished by Amare himself pretty much. We have space to sign a free agent, maybe even two and still nothing. No movement. No talk. Detriot is getting Ben & Charlie. Boston will for sure get Rasheed. Trevor is going to Houston and one of our hugest rivals will be aquiring Ron Artest. So my question is when will players want to play for the Warriors? When? Because i've been waiting and waiting. That 07 squad that humilated the Mavs, can we say there was really any star on that team of ours? Baron? Sure, you can argue him, but who else? Not J-Rich, he hasn't even made an all-star appearance. Sure he's put up good numbers, but where was he most of his career? The Warriors. He did play great here and will always be my favorite Warrior, but not technically a "star". Biedrins? Puts up the numbers but not a star in a sense. Stephen? Maggette? Monta? No. None of them considered stars. Maybe to us as Golden State Warriors fans, but not to the NBA, other NBA players or the sports world for that matter. That team that took us to the playoffs in 07 went because they played together and did it for us. Not for money. Not because they were "stars". They went because they had something to prove and you could tell they loved playing together. I bet if you asked every NBA player whats the least likely team they'd like to get traded to or even drafted by, it would be us. The Warriors. Ok maybe the Kings too. So its not always about "stars" to put a good team together and to make a playoff run, but its obvious we won't be making the playoffs for another 12 or 13 years, until the organization/GM/Coach can put together a team that can get along, have fun playing together, is here not for money, and just wants to win. Maggette is here for the cash. Monta I guarantee you is too. Stephen is a seasoned vet and got fortunate with the deal they gave him because he was only really good when Baron was running the show. I just wish the Warriors wouldnt focus on trading or signing for these "stars" when its not what it really takes to make it to the "big dance". Sure you have teams like the Celtics with Kevin, Ray and Paul. You have the Lakers next year with Kobe, Gasol and Artest. But We don't need stars. We need heart.
Mike Bibby has heart.
Leon Powe has heart.
Ben Gordon has got heart. Detroit is smart. Gotta give it up to Joe.
David Lee has heart.
Chris Wilcox has heart.
Desmond Mason has heart.
Grant Hill has heart.
Jason Kidd has heart. He'd be stupid to sign with the Knicks if he's trying to win a championship before he retires.
Ime Udoka has heart. Yup. Playing behind Duncan, why aren't we going after this kid?
Anthony Parker got heart yo.
Shawn Marion got heart too.
The warriors need to take each free agency and treat it like a draft and sign at least one player if possible. Not a "STAR!" Not the Artests. Not the Stoudemires. Not the Shaqs. If were gonna build around Monta, which doesn't seem the case because we traded to get a PG in Law and we drafted a PG in Curry (which i can tell is unhappy to play here this upcoming season as well) and we re-signed Azubuike last year. We still have Watson. We still have Belinelli somehow, so many guards! We need to rebuild. Not around Monta. Not around anyone. The solution is never to rebuild around someone. You just have to rebuild. Sure the Cavs got Shaq, but I guarantee you they won't win the finals next year. It'll be the Lakers again, most likely versus the Celtics. Possibly the Pistons. Although its gonna be interesting where Turkoglu goes. Anyways, im unhappy because to me it feels like no one really wants to come and play here in Oakland. Why? Because were not building a successful team. Sure there's a lot to look forward too this year just like every other year, but when will I get that feeling back. You know that feeling? That feeling you had when Baron dunked on AK-47. or when J-Rich came down and hit back to back threes then dunked in Okurs face. or when Stephen threw up threes like he knew it was gonna go in no matter who was in his face, how off it looked or how far back he was? Those guys loved playing together and they showed it. I just hope we see some kind of hope this upcoming season. I don't mean to be negative or come off mean. I'm just unhappy. I want to be happy and proud again of my Oakland Warriors. I wish Chris was here still. I don't think we would have drafted Curry, I think we would have grabbed Hill, which is what we NEED right now and I feel we would be more active in getting some wholesome quality players coming here. Well time for some feedback.

I know this will sound repetative
but i think we should wait just a little bit more so our young players will develop and hopefully turn out like the blazers.

I was tempted to give you another “thumbs down” but then I realized there are at least 5 statements in this post that deserve one. Just consider the previous one a big thumbs down to pretty much the entire post. You seriously think the Ben Gordon/Charlie V Pistons will be better, or go farther, or have a better chance to contend than LeBron’s Cavs? Seriously? If you want to place a bet on that please, please, please let me know.

David Lee would be awesome
but he’s too expensive, i think they’ll get a PF with the MLE unless they trade for one

How does a guard play behind a PF/C?

lakers are our rival? since when? lol
we might hate them but so do 28 other teams. Sac Town is more of a rival to the Lakers then we are.
Our only rivals are the Clippers and the Mavs(though this is pretty much going away too) , and maybe Sacremento.

There are no rivalries in the NBA. Lakers-Celtics is the only thing resembling a rivalry because of it’s history.

“When Will Players Want To Play Here?”
When we start winning. It’s as simple as that.
“We have space to sign a free agent, maybe even two and still nothing.”
We’re over the cap. All we have is a MLE to offer out. That’s not going to bring in any impact players. So no, we do not have the space to sign a free agent or two (unless you’re talking about a Turiaf-type backup, or two players worse than that).

Those of you out there that truly know basketball and the NBA
already knew we weren’t gonna be major players in FA. This should not come as a big surprise due tot he salary cap. Our play this off season was always going to be through trades. We are stacked at the wings and we are going to make some moves. But it will be minor pick up if it is to be a FA. Have pateince and stay tuned a major trade is coming………..

Out of all the players named
I want David Lee the most. The Knicks really like Lee, but they can’t keep both him and Nate Robinson. And we all know that the Knicks are trying to maneuver for as much cap space as possible next summer to sign Lebron, maybe another top flight player if they can afford it. Is it even possible we could work out a sign and trade for Lee, giving them Wright, Claxton’s Contract, and throw in Bellinelli if contracts don’t match up? I don’t have time to check the trade machine right now to see whether or not this could work, but since we definitely don’t even have a chance to sign one of the top free agents next summer, we should see if we can get quality players (specifically the “beef” that Riley was talking about) from teams looking to create cap space. I see the Warriors needing one more solid big to rebound and score to make the Warriors a possible playoff team.

Claxton cannot be packaged in a deal for 2 months.
It’s not impossible that Lee, the Warriors and the Knicks could agree to a deal in principle to be completed in two months, but it isn’t likely.
Another difficulty in a sign-and-trade for Lee is that at the raise he’d want to make it worth his while, he becomes BYC, which means that making the salaries match becomes harder. It would involve the Knicks sending out more players, which we would have to match with some other players. It gets tricky quickly. It’s one of the reasons that guys coming off of rookie deals aren’t involved in many s-‘n-t’s.
(General rule: “Is it possible to get <.player.> in a sign and trade?” “A default answer of ‘No’ is so very often correct that discussing sign-and-trades that have not been first mentioned by a team or agent is only slighly more relevant to getting the flux capacitor to work to go back and draft better.”)

Signing a player for the sake of signing a player is dumb.
Most mid-ranged free-agents tend to be slightly overpaid, for the same reasons that auctions tend to be better for the seller than the buyer. (If ONE team overvalues the player, he gets paid too much.)
Given the salary cap, one of the worst things a team can do is to overpay midrange players. It cripples you going forward.
I don’t see a lot of impact players (although I would love David Lee, as well) so why not wait it out.
When will players want to come here? When we win. Two years ago we were an attractive destination. Baron’s last year here, we could start to see the friction between the coach and the players. That’s part of the reason I think Nellie has to go – he’s no longer perceived as a net positive – instead he’s seen as a tyrant who doesn’t have control of the team.
That might be forgiven if we were winning, a lot. But not otherwise.
Wins result in media attention. Media attention – as well as being on a winner – makes people want to come here.
To start winning, the team needs a long-term plan which makes sense. We need to figure out the PG situation (a good PG is a draw for a lot of players.) Then we need enough cap room to make competitive offers.
(It’s pretty rare that these guys make choices other than to go for the most money, to be honest – all of this other stuff is marginal. TO get a star who’s getting multiple max offers, you need to have the right team. Otherwise, you can usually get someone by paying him more than anyone else. But that’s not a strategy to build a winner).

If you ‘win’ an auction, you’ve just shown that you paid more than anyone else was willing to. You’ve just shown that you’re the guy who payed more than you could get if you sold it again. Congradulations! No one else wants what you’ve got at the price you’re paying!

Thats exactly why the Celtics and the Lakers won the last two championships. Minus Ron Artest.

"When Will Players Want To Play Here?"
Well, I stopped going to the Quiznos by my work because i got really bad service a couple times. A few months later I saw a sign that said “under new ownership”, I decided I’d give it a try and it was much better.

Do you really think the players care who signs the checks?
Granted, the lack of vision and coherence coming out of the Warriors front office, as well as the mishandling of the Monta situation, may give some players second thoughts.
But for the most part, I don’t think it matters to them (except insomuch as an owner can help create a winner, which is less, in my opinion, that most people think).
by Ronaldinho on Jul 4, 2009 9:35 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Huh?
What are you talking about? I was just sharing an anecdote about my lunch habits. ; )
The point is that ownership (Cohan) chooses a President (Rowell) who chooses a GM (Riley) etc.
I’m not one of those guys that blames everything on Cohan, but at some point there has to be some accountability. Sure, if we start winning people will want to play here, but are we going to build a consistent winner with Rowell running this franchise? There is no guarantee that things will improve with new ownership, but much like my local sandwich shop, sometimes a change at the top causes reevaluation of the entire organization, firings, hirings, an improvement in value for the customer, and a better work environment for the employee.

by olympicmike on Jul 4, 2009 11:06 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
That's only the case if the owner is really f'ing up in quantifiable ways.
Which is happening right now with this team, but hasn’t been the case for the most of Cohan’s tenure.
Sometimes “under new management” doesn’t solve the problem because the old management wasn’t the problem.
by Ronaldinho on Jul 5, 2009 12:41 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Well the old management was the problem in this case…
The NBA is these players career, and it works the same way as any of our careers. Some companies have more favorable company cultures and what not and people enjoy working for them more. The NBA is no different. Cohan has created a company that sucks to work for. Not only that, but we also don’t win. NBA players do respond to these things.

I agree, It sux that guys don’t want to come here. But I think that Marion, Bibby, or Wallace would be great signs if we can get one and stay under cap.
