Lesser Known Drafts

The Curry Iverson debate got me thinking about earlier drafts and how they stack up against more recent ones.

I'm not saying these are as good '84, '96, or '03, but their still interesting to look at anyway.  You could make the argument that some of these drafts will be looked at as better than '96 and '03,  I think '84 is the best overall because of the legacy it has created, the jury is still out somewhat on '96 and '03.  I think it is easy to only compare the lottery era drafts, but the draft since the beginning of the NBA has been characterized as new young talent coming into the NBA, so I think it is fair to compare all draft classes.  When the ABA existed they had a lot of talent along with the NBA so some of these drafts might have even been stronger.  Just because these players played before many of our times does not mean they were not great, and I think that  these draft classes are some of the best of all time.

What year was Wilt drafted?
he is the only player in NBA history to average more than 40 and 50 points in a season or score 100 points in a single NBA game.

Its time for a change...

?

You could make the argument that some of these drafts will be looked at as better than ’96 and ’03, I think ’84 is the best overall because of the legacy it has created, the jury is still out somewhat on ’96 and ’03. I think it is easy to only compare the lottery era drafts, but the draft since the beginning of the NBA has been characterized as new young talent coming into the NBA, so I think it is fair to compare all draft classes

the drafts you talk about are 84’ and 96’ and 03’ but you didnt post those draft classes, and i still don’t see where you got this idea from. Very random and kinda pointless but i found it very interesting.

no draft will ever beat the 84 draft.

PG-John Stockton
SG-MJ
SF-Jerome Kersey
PF-Charles Barkley
C-Hakeem Olajuwon
bench
G-Alvin Robertson
F-Otis Thorpe
C-Kevin Willis
F-Sam Perkins
G-Carl Lewis (yes THAT Carl Lewis)

I really don’t know if you could make a lineup that could beat that starting lineup if you combined any 2 other drafts, the Barkley/Olajuwon inside combo alone would be a complete nightmare to matchup against, then there’s that backcourt…..

That was a pretty stacked class, though I think you know it’s a bit of an exaggeration that combining 2 drafts can’t produce a better lineup.

PG – Undecided
SG – Dwayne Wade
SF – Lebron
PF – Alonzo Mourning
C – Shaqtus

PG’s are weak in those 2 drafts, but the bench includes:

Mo Williams, Chris Bosh, Melo, David West, Spre!, Jim Jackson, Robert Horry, Jon Barry, PJ Brown, Popeye Jones (funny reference because he’s the ugliest person ever!), Josh Howard, etc. I’m sure you could make some backcourt combination that works well. I’m sure they’re also not the only draft classes combined that are ridiculous. 2003 class was deeper than I expected when I was looking through this. Decent amount of late 1st round and 2nd round hits.

“i dont know what’s point of this?”

What’s wong with you people? Do you not have an appreciation for basketball history? Sometimes looking back through the past is interesting and enjoyable, and gives you a better perspective on the present, so I don’t see why this needs to have a “point”.

No doubt you’d get a lot more depth from any 2 other drafts…a lot of other drafts are deeper by themselves than the 84 draft, but the top 4 guys in ’84 are far superior to any other draft.

I think the best option for that combined draft team would probably be to plug Spree in the lineup. That probably leaves Wade vs. Stockton, Jordan vs. LeBron, Spreewell vs. Kersey, Zo vs. Barkley, and Shaq vs. Hakeem. I’d pay a lot of money to watch that game but I’d give the edge to the old guys right now, but that could potentially change if LeBron continues to improve.

-The thing about the 84 team is that they’d just fit so damn well together. I really feel Olajuwon is probably the most underrated player in recent NBA history. The guy pulled down over 11 boards and blocked over 3 shots per 36 minutes for his career despite falling off a bit late in his career. In his prime he was pulling down over 13 boards per 36 minutes and blocking over 4 shots per 36. In his prime he was rebounding like Dwight Howard while blocking about twice as many shots, stealing the ball at a rate fairly similar to Chris Paul and racking up more assists per 36 mins than Marco Belinelli, the guy a lot of people want us to start at point guard, ever has…. oh and then there were those offensive post moves. He basically was everything Dwight Howard could ever hope to be. You can’t tell me he wouldn’t have been the perfect “triangle” center playing with Jordan.
-Next to the fluid finesse (can you call a guy who collects over 13 boards and 4 blocks in 3 full quarters of play finesse?) of Olajuwon is Barkley. Even at about 6’6" he rebounded the ball at a better rate than Mourning. For the first half of his career Chuck shot close to 60% from the field. He’s also a very good passing big and would bring a lot of toughness to that lineup.
-Kersey is obviously the weak spot but he was a very good defensive player and a great rebounding 3. It would help if he had been a little better from 3 point range. If these teams really played I might consider putting Robertson in the starting lineup over Kersey simply because he was an even better defensive player, a very good passer, a slightly better outside shooter and still very good on the boards for his size.
-MJ is MJ
-Stockton put up over 14 assists and 3 stls per 36 mins a couple times in his career. Imagine if he was passing to MJ, Olajuwon and Barkley instead of just Malone. He obviously wouldn’t be asked to score much on this team but he was incredibly efficient as a scorer too. He shot over 57% from the field one year, as a PG thats just ridiculous. Combined with solid 3 point and free throw shooting he had a career TS% over 57 for his career and about a 4:1 ast:to ratio.

+1, really whats the point of sports at all? Its about entertainment, and discussions like these can be a lot of fun.

It’d be an interesting matchup, that’s for sure. I like Shaq out there against anyone. As amazing as The Dream was, Shaq’s bulk presents huge problems, and his height presents huge problems for Barkley. Stockton would have a hard time on D. Nice little mismatch there. I dunno, it’d be interesting, every player is so good a mismatch on one end means a mismatch on the other, too. I’ll just admit I have no clue who’d win that matchup, but I’d enjoy every second of it.
