Around SBN: Has Kentucky Improved Since the Non-Conference Season?

Oh God No!

With the likely signing of Gortat, the Mavs are said to be dangling the expiring contract of Eric Dampier in front of a lot of teams.

When I read that on NBA.com today my heart sank and I started remembering all the missed lay-ups and dumb fouls Dampier brought to the team in years passed.

I am on the verge of tears typing this and thinking he could end up a Warrior again somehow based on that comment that the Warriors need some Beef in the line-up.

Please tell me this cannot happen!  There is no scenario where bringing him in is a good thing which is exactly why it could potentially happen as Cohan's last poke at the Warriors fans he hates so much.

This FanPost is a submission from a member of the mighty Golden State of Mind community. While we're all here to throw up that W, these words do not necessarily reflect the views of the GSoM Crew. Still, chances are the preceding post is Unstoppable Baby!

Expiring contract = good. If we unloaded a guy we don’t want long term (Maggette or Jackson, for instance) it wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world. I’m not advocating those moves, nor have I even looked into the salary situation to see if it’s plausible, I’m just pointing out what the upside of the trade is. That said, other teams want expiring contracts more than us. Others are gearing up for next years FA class that we won’t be players in because we already have a lot of money committed.

Agreed...

…Dampier is a big payroll dump this year. Wouldn’t mind it for the right package.

hate dampier, but would advocate a magg swap for him :( yes, this is the position into which the warriors have forced themselves

Maggs for a sack of rocks w/ an expiring deal attached is a good trade

HAHAHA

Nice one. Don’t forget, Damp has hands made out of rocks too.

if RIley could trade Maggette for Dampier, then I would forget about how much I love Chris Mullin and become a believer.

Getting rid of Maggette’s ridiculous contract would be HUGE for us .

I'd trade Dampier for Maggette.

Just because we reacquire Damp doesn’t mean we have to play him.

He’d be a great trade piece mid-season and if we don’t get anything good he’d help clear cap space for the 2010 FA party.

Even if we cleared enough space for the 2010 FA party, do you REALLY think any great game changer would want to come to Golden State? I doubt it

amare trade talks are back on? rumor central on espn.com:

Sources have told Ric Bucher that the much-discussed trade between the Golden State Warriors and Phoenix Suns for Amare Soudemire may be heating up once again. As tweeted by Bucher: “Sources are mixed on if Amare-to-GS still happens. My hunch is yes because Nelly wants him and Phx wants to move on.” Earlier reports from the San Jose Mercury News Tuesday that Stoudemire had now interest in joining the Warriors or signing an extension with the team.

does this excite anybody?

That last portion of the Insider is a typo...

I’m fairly confident it should read “Stoudemire had NO interest in joining the Warriors or signing an extension with the team.”

He now has interest.

Rather have Brandon Bass

Read today he was offered 25M from an undisclosed team.

I think having AR and Bass at the power forward position would be a very good combo. I also read Bass was looking for the MLE in the 5-5.5 range. So that deal he has on the table must be 5M for 5 years probably with a player option.

As Riley put it, Bass would give us “beef”.

by Balance on Jul 6, 2009 3:26 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I saw that too and had the same thought.

Think Bass is the only player realistically available to us other than an outside shot at Sessions or by trade, was hoping that we’re the undisclosed team.

Not Bass

Brandon Bass is a solid 7th 8th or 9th guy. But we have to remember that the goal is getting to the playoffs first and then a title.. The Warriors go out and get pretty good players all the time (see Maggette) that do not help them win at all. Bass is not a starting PF, and I honestly don’t think AR is ready for PF. Sorry to say that Nellieball is not going to work with oustanding players (B Davis, S Nash, Dirk, T Hardaway, Sprewell, Mullin, Webber). Monta at point is not getting us to the playoffs, and neither is Curry, at least for a couple years. The move that needs to be made is Amare, a proven player and winner, and a player who be the focal point of Nellieball. I would say R Sessions would the best use of the midlevel or even Jack.

I would love to have Bass, but not as a heavy rotation player and I just see too many dub fans willing to settle for OK players instead of waiting or demanding great ones.

I don’t know even where to start with this other than we are polar opposites in reasoning.

by Balance on Jul 6, 2009 4:51 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Baron Davis is not an outstanding player.

Cause Havoc. Bring Nash in and 120 point games will be very expected

by montadaboss on Jul 6, 2009 4:56 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Actully I agree that Bass is a 2nd string player but a pretty good one at that. Kinda in the Turiaf sense. I think AR could be the future and this allows him to start/ rotate with bass who has the beef and different game in the ‘compelmentry’ sense. Also makes Wright a valueable trade piece.

I also agree that the Stoudimire trade is a good thing but I’m past it and doubt is happens regardless of current rumors.

I actually only disagree that Monta and Curry can’t play point.

by Balance on Jul 6, 2009 5:04 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

When Baron is healthy and motivated, he is one of the best players in the NBA, he does things that not many point guards can do. His lack of motivation and shaky health could be reasons for him not being a Great player, but when healthy, one of the best. I just don’t really see the Warriors making any noise with Bass and AR rotating, the only reason we got away without a big PF in ’07 is because of the play of Davis, JRICH, Jack, and Monta. And you could argue that Bass would not fit into Nellies system, like Harrington did.

I just don’t see Curry or Monta being the premiere PG needed to help get to the playoffs, albeit you do not need a superstar PG, the Magic and Lakers did not have one, but they had other superstars, howard, turkoglu and kobe. I like Curry at the 1 and Monta at the 2. Bring in a big time player and the Warriors will have something. I also do not think the Amare thing will happen, but it’s encouraging to see Riley mixing it up out there.

I say trade Jackson and maggette

For damp and Josh Howard. Then we would get a great player and an expiring deal for two terrible contracts and we all know nelly loves j Howard. That would be a great trade for us.

Cause Havoc. Bring Nash in and 120 point games will be very expected

salaries don’t match, you’d either have to add a player or switch Howard for Jerry Stackhouse’s expiring.

dont trade jack

He is our lone leader and veteran and cares about winning, 20,5, and 5 for his price. I would rather just see a Maggs for Damp or a Maggs for Josh howard.

i personally think

bringing back any players is a cancer to any team. period. im sure there are many instances which this theory can be proved incorrect, but im also sure in those instances the said returning player(s) are actually GOOD veterans who want to play their last year or so at “home”. that is certainly not the case with dampier, or adonal foyle for that matter. while i agree we need some bulk or beef or whatever you want to call it in our line up, bringing back dampier or adonal can only hurt this young warriors squad. i personally like the idea of bringing in bay area native leon powe. he has proven himself worthy of being a great big man with the celtics and the combination of him, turiaf, and biedrins could be deadly

by nhlogan on Jul 7, 2009 12:24 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I'm totally baffled ...

Yes, Mags is overpaid, but he’s actually a good, productive player.

You want to trade him for a player who has no role on this team, and no motivation, negative intangibles – his primary skills are duplicated by better, younger players.

Look, I understand not liking Maggette’s contract. Nobody likes that contract except for Mags, his family, and his agent. But he’s a good player.

We are worse off without him next year. His our best small forward, and he’s an above-average player at that position. Heck, he’s our ONLY average-or-better player at that position.

by Ronaldinho on Jul 7, 2009 9:37 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Role

Maggs has no real defined role on the team, either. Last year, he ranged from starting PF to 7th man behind Morrow, and with the Dubs’ love affair with Stephen Jackson, he’ll be back on the bench again. It’s very possible that he could put up effective numbers as our 6th man, but if we’re not contending, we shouldn’t be paying 10 million dollars a year over the next 4 for instant offense off the bench. In that light, Damp’s expiring contract has more value to the franchise than the quality of Magg’s play.

by the guy on Jul 8, 2009 12:25 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

seems to me like he had a pretty well defined role after the first couple months. He played out of position often and kinda sporadic minutes because we had a ton of injures and because Don Nelson is our coach.

Thing A

by sam23 on Jul 8, 2009 1:42 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

That strikes me as more of a coaching problem than a player problem ...

… and I doubt we have Nellie as our coach after this year. Does it make sense to gut the level of talent on the roster to cater to him?

by Ronaldinho on Jul 8, 2009 9:06 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Contract year

Now, with my tongue planted firmly in my cheek, I remember the last time the Dubs had Erick Dampier in a contract year, he was great! Averaged 12 points, 12 boards, and was among the league leaders in FG%. Could lightning strike twice, without the six years of awful play under a terrible contract preceding?

by the guy on Jul 8, 2009 12:17 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

lightning?!

Even during that year where he averaged 12&12 he was freaking terrible. Anyone that size should average 15/10 with a small amount of basketball skills.
Dampier screwed up so many defensive plays, failed to box out, adn missed close shots when we really needed the points.
During that time period the Warriors were desperate for a big man and there was no talent to be found in the NBA/no trade bait on the team.
Damp, like Biedrins, had no outside shot so of course his shot % is high.

I agree Magette is a decent-good player at his position and needs to be played in position to be productive. He can have a great impact for us if Nellie is able to use him properly. Sometimes injuries just dont allow it, so we will have to regrade him after this season. I have a hard time believing we will be as injury prone this year (no good reason to feel that way, but I am in a good mood today)

by warriorsvictim on Jul 8, 2009 10:21 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Tongue-in-cheek

See sarcasm, satire. I wasn’t serious. I HATE Dampier for dogging it for six years on the Dubs making 10 million a year, then finally giving a crap in his contract year. I hope the Grizzlies sign him so he can languish on the bench for the sorriest franchise in the league.

by the guy on Jul 8, 2009 2:15 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Dumpier

Just ask Shaq how he feels about Eric Dumpier. Please say it will never happen. Please. I don’t want that dump of a player on the Dubs again. Who will be next? Victor Alexander?
