Trade ideas from Indy
Came across two different trade proposals at Indy Cornrows that might be of interest to some of us:
1. T.J. Ford and Jeff Foster for Corey Maggette and Ronny Turiaf.
Not only do the salaries match, but inclusion of Maggs in a trade proposal indicates he might have more trade value than his critics here would ever believe. (As much as our homerism for our own players is self-evident, so too is our disdain. This phenomenon also showed up on Brightside of the Sun re Amare.) Apparently Indy has been interested in acquiring Maggette since 2005, while citing Turiaf’s defense as a boon for the Pacers’ frontline.
Here’s the rationale they proposed as to why GS would be interested:
Why would the Warriors do the deal? Something tells me … Nelson isn't convinced that Monta Ellis is a point guard. A back court of Ellis and Ford would be one of the fastest, most entertaining tandems to watch night in and night out. Foster gets after the ball a little better than Turiaf. Though Golden State was 11th in the league in rebounding, they were dead last in rebound differential - giving up 5 more rebounds per game to their opponents.
Although this was put up after the draft, it’s not clear the poster knew how much Nelson hyped Curry as a our future PG. One of the responses cited Curry though while addressing why GSW might like the deal:
… I wouldn’t put it past GS to have buyer’s remorse on Maggette, and he’d immediately solve the depth issue the Pacers have at the wing positions. Foster would be a key rotation player behind Andris Biedrins, and would provide the Warriors with the veteran post presence they need to make a little bit of playoff headway. But I’m not sure how Ford fits in. With him, Ellis, Steph Curry and Steven Jackson all needing the ball to be effective, I don’t know that there’d be enough shots to go around. I think the Warriors need a distributing PG in a bad way, and Ford isn’t that guy. But if they’d be willing to do it, it would address two Pacers needs at the risk of taking on Maggette’s bad contract.
2. And, by the way there is some sentiment for an Amare to Indy trade from the Indy fans if not Larry Bird yet. Would an offer of TJ Ford + Murphy + Foster >> Andris + Marco + BWright? Amare is the answer
Their board had many of the similar concerns ours did (health, contract, etc.) but in far less copious fashion.
1. Would you make this trade: T.J. Ford and Jeff Foster for Corey Maggette and Ronny Turiaf?
2. Which trade should Kerr make: TJ Ford + Murphy + Foster (or) Andris + Marco + BWright?

Those trades will never work in my opinion
We have no room for Ford.
Maggette > Ford
Turiaf>>>>>>>Foster

Turiaf is younger and Foster showed serious signs of decay last year, but at his best, he played much better than Turiaf has played.

of course any analysis of the trade would have to take into account the shorter contracts coming back to us – IIRC Ford’s is an expiring this year, Foster’s the next, so those who lament Corey’s contract would be more likely to favor this type of trade than I would …

I’m a Maggette critic and I don’t think I’d do that deal. I thought Ford expired after next year….if he’s an expiring this year it may swing my opinion of it, but I still wouldn’t totally love the deal. …..I’m holding out for Chicago to balk at the idea of getting Boozer just as they seem to bail out at the last minute of every other mega deal they’ve been on the verge of making for the past 5 years allowing us to step in and essentially swap Maggette and Wright for AK47.

Doesn’t make sense to trade for Ford. We has enough guards. Trading Maggette for Ford seems like a bad deal for us. At least Maggette can provide something (effecient yet ugly scoring) even though his contract is terrible I would rather have Maggette than Ford. Turiaf over Foster ALL DAY!

The first trade isn’t terrible, but I probably wouldn’t be a huge fan of it. I would kinda like to see Ford come here, but Turiaf’s age and reasonable contract make him more attractive than an aging Foster. The years remaining difference between the bad contract of Ford and the bad contract of Maggette isn’t enough to make me want to make the second part of that swap.
I don’t think “we have enough guards” is really a good argument against this trade though. As the Indy fans point out the Ford/Ellis backcourt would be fun to watch. Ford would likely be gone by the time Curry would be ready to start and if you gave Ford 25-28 minutes per night at PG that still leaves 20-25 minutes there for Curry and Monta to split. With Maggette moving out in the deal Jack slides over and picks up his minutes at the 3 leaving a lot more minutes at the 2 for Monta/Curry/Morrow. We’d be getting quite a bit smaller but unless we also brought back CJ and intended to give him a lot of minutes, really doesn’t jam up the guard rotation much. Its basically just giving most of Maggette’s minutes to Ford and sliding everyone up a position.

Well my feeling is that giving Ford 25 minutes a night would be kind of a waste. I would rather spread those minutes around to Curry, Morrow, Bellinelli & Co. Let’s give these guys who have been on the bench the last two years a chance.

but my feeling is those same exact minutes (and probably more) are going to be played by Maggette anyway…..unless Maggette is going to get most of his minutes at the 4 which I don’t particularly want to see.

A 23 year old center who is an elite rebounder with a very reasonable contract that pays him the same rate every year and runs into his late 20s seems far more valuable to me than the entire Murphy/Ford/Foster package. Throw in a talented young PF whose main problem so far in his career has been getting and staying on the floor and a guard who some may actually view as a legitimate prospect and that package seems much, much more attractive to me. I know I’m probably a bit biased, but I honestly feel like if I was Kerr I would make the Warriors-Amare deal….but there’s no way I’d make that Pacers-Amare deal.

DELETE
As soon as I saw Turiaf’s name I wanted to delete this lol. But then I realized I can’t. I still hit the delete button on my keyboard, must have been a reflexive reaction.

Yeah, the author should get a time out , about 5 years would be appropriate. Give up Rony? Get real.
Now wheres the rubbers? Whose got the rubbers?
I noticed there's so many of them
and there's really not that many of us.

No thanks
Theres really no trade id make unless it improved our starting line up. We have no need to swap backups for backups. The only way i’d trade Turiaf is for a starter and i dont see that happening.
by Warriorfan on Jul 9, 2009 10:09 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
I think
we’re overreacting to that first trade a little bit. I know Turiaf is a fan favorite but he doesn’t have that much more value than Foster and knocking years off Maggette’s bad deal by swapping him for Ford is fairly valuable. I probably wouldn’t do it, but its not nearly as stupid of a trade idea as 80% of the ones we come up with.

I would only do this....
at the deadline if we were far out of playoff contention and thus a salary dump. Otherwise we’ve just thrown away any shot at playoffs and losing another year.
