ESPN Reports: Warriors are people's 2nd favorite team
Just in, ESPN is running a piece front page of their NBA section called Second Favorites. Heck, the pharse it's self is worth a look, but what got me to read it was the pics of Monta Ellis and Chirs Paul.
As it turns out TrueHoop ran a survey of it's network of bloggers (GSoM isn't included by the way) and 5 of them voted the Warriors as their 2nd favorite team. The next closet team was New Orleans 3 and all the other teams receiving votes had two or less. Here is what the 5 voters for the Warriors had to say:
John Krolik, Cavs the Blog (Cleveland Cavaliers blog)
Jeremy Wagner, Roundball Mining Company (Denver Nuggets blog)
Last year, the Warriors felt like a random collection of shoot-first guards, developing big men, and a coach drinking a bit too much of his own kool-aid. But this season's Monta Ellis/Stephen Curry backcourt is wholly intriguing, Captain Jack is still there, and of course, there's the majesty of Anthony Randolph. The rumored Randolph/Amare Stoudemire frontcourt would've been about the most amazing thing ever, but alas. The Warriors still have unique talent and that insane, go-for-broke mentality, so there's a soft spot in my heart for them. Even if "We Believe" has become "We're Cautiously Optimistic."
D.J. Foster, Clipperblog (Los Angeles Clippers blog)
On nights when the old ball and chain is unavailable, I'll often find myself committing fan infidelity with the Golden State Warriors. The love for this group of misfits starts with the completely awesome and unquestionably terrifying Stephen Jackson, who was once quoted, which is phenomenal, saying that he "makes love to pressure.” The Captain Jack brought me in the door, but it's the Anthony Randolph chaser that keeps me hanging around.
Many people have a vice that they may not be particularly proud of. Some take drugs, others commit arson and of course there are the Kobe Bryant fans. Me? I like the Golden State Warriors, in no small part because they are not the kind of team you bring home to momma. But there's no denying it: The freewheeling style, where the big shot makers roam unfettered by responsibility of normal basketball, is a perfect late night vice for those times when no one else needs to know what is going on in the privacy of my home.
Sebastian Pruiti, Nets Are Scorching (New Jersey Nets blog)
The Golden State Warriors are the perfect "second favorite” team. With a roster full of young athletic freaks -- Monta Ellis, Anthony Morrow, Anthony Randolph -- this team was built to fit in Don Nelson's run and gun system. Throw rookie Stephen Curry into the mix, and you got a team that will run up the score without even thinking twice about playing defense, and their coach isn't even bothered by it, as long as they take the ball out of the hoop quickly. If the Golden State Warriors were my favorite team, that would make me pull my hair out, but they are not, they are my second favorite team.
Jeremy Schmidt, Bucksketball (Milwaukee Bucks blog)
Sure, the franchise is a mess and the organization is more dysfunctional than an 80's family sitcom, but look at that team. Anthony Randolph is capable of anything on a basketball court. Stephen Jackson has mastered awkward ugly dribbling and shoots with no conscience and even less accuracy. Monta Ellis glides up and down the court with such grace that I assume he has wings on his feet. And even better? They added everyone's favorite college gunner in Stephen Curry.
This article begs the question who is your 2nd favorite team?

The fans have spoken!!
So it is true, people really do love our team but the league truly hates this organization!! Maybe they will start to give us more love on national TV next season.
I love the quotes from the different bloggers.

2nd fav team changes from year to year, it used to be Washington when they were Warriors pt2. This year I will have to wait and see. Though out of the gate the Cav’s look interisting as Do the Florida teams.

For me...
The Warriors were always my 2nd team, because I was die-hard Seattle Supersonics fan. When they died the Warrior ascended to #1 in my book and I’ve decide not to have another “2nd team.”
A Sonics fan without a team... but after 6 seasons now of GS Warriors season tickets have convinced me to adopt the boys from Oakland.
I started liking the Thunder kind of as a joke of liking 2 bad teams
But I’m actually pretty pumped for this season
Totally agree
In terms of the team’s make-up, roster moves, and of course the Velvet Hoop. That said, I hope they go 0-82.

The Warriors are my 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and all the way down to 30th favorite team in the NBA. My heart belongs to only one and thats the Dubs!
WARRIORS BASKETBALL!!! Patiently waiting for a title...I may be waiting for a long time...

I cheer for the Clips on the side after spending my first 2 years in college in Riverside.
I hated all the damn Laker fans I was surrounded by and would only watch their games if my roommate was watching the Lakers or they were playing the Dubs.

haha yeah I go to Riverside too, and I sympathize with you, I’m the only Laker hater, and therefore I have a soft spot for the Clips. But Dubs above all.
My girlfriends’ fav team is the Magic so I root for them too. I also liked the Suns and Hornets two seasons ago.

More from the Nuggets’ blogger:
I like the Golden State Warriors.
For years I have longed for the Denver Nuggets to pay half as much attention to defense as they did offense, work for good shots and take care of the ball. The Warriors do none of those things so why on earth would I fall for their no discipline die in a hail of bullets style the Nuggets used to drive me crazy with?
I love the back and forth games where no lead for either team is ever safe. The offensive talent comes at you in waves and when Stephen Jackson and/or Monta Ellis are on it is a thing of beauty. Youngsters like Andris Biedrins, Brandan Wright and (future MVP candidate) Anthony Randolph are fun to watch and next season they get to add Stephen Curry to the mix. The icing on the cake is Don Nelson flipping out on the sideline, regardless of how correct the latest call might have been.
If the NBA decides the Nuggets should stay in Taipei this October and the Denver Nuggets cease to exist, I doubt I would latch onto the Warriors long term. After all, they are not the kind of team you bring home to momma and give access to your daughter (God created Kevin Durant for that). However, right now their freewheeling style where the big guns roam the court unfettered by the responsibility of taking quality shots is a perfect vice to indulge in late at night when no one else needs to know what is going on in the privacy of my home.
A Sonics fan without a team... but after 6 seasons now of GS Warriors season tickets have convinced me to adopt the boys from Oakland.
A few points
1. Anthony Randolph has yet to play as “Future MVP Anthony Randolph” in, you know, an actual NBA basketball game.
1a. It’s uncertain if he is actually really good or just really good at beating up on lower tier competition.
1b. He should be listed with Curry, rather than Monta/Jax.
2. One should never, never say anything like this unless your daughter is a prostitute and you are her pimp:
they are not the kind of team you bring home to momma and give access to your daughter
That’s just wrong.

2nd favorite team
From the days of West and Wilt till Shaq left the Lakers were my back-up team( unless they were playing CWebb’s Kings), then it was Iverson and the 76ers for a while and now it’s Phoenix unless they get rid of everyone I like , if so it might become Portland?

I could never have a second team. I do root for players I like, though. Which right now is pretty much everyone good, because I think the NBA has entered a golden age. There are so many ridiculously talented young players in the NBA who are classy and likable with great personalities for marketing purposes. Howard, Lebron, Wade, Roy is a classy guy, Paul is less classy (see NC State game) but still unbelieveable and fun to watch. I make an effort to see these guys play in person, and like rooting for them over dbags like Kobe or little frenchy sissies like Parker. However, there’s only one team for me, even if every other week I feel like giving up on them forever. I have to say, this is a good week for the Warriors because of this blogpost – the fans of the other teams reminded me of the reaons I love my team.
Poll for Biggest D-Bag B-Ball Player
They should do a poll for the biggest d-bag players and guess who would win? I have to agree with Missing Barry-Kobe takes tha cake
Come to think of it, I really can’t think of anyone else who’s a d-bag besides Kobe. It’s not like there’s a ochocinco and terrell owens of NBA. OHH , actually second d-bag is Stephon Starbury—or would he actually win the most mentally unsound category?
Celtics!!!!
2nd team. But wait, the Warriors never make the playoffs, so the Celtics are my team in the playoffs, that will change when we actually make the playoffs(or if?)

No way I can say I have a second favorite – something on the side when the warriors aren’t playing – a team that actually makes the playoffs and so I just sneak a peak. Nope, no way. No how. I made a vow and I stay true to my word. I mean, I might look at certain players (Wade, Rose, CP3) – but don’t worry warriors – I’ll never touch!
2nd favorite team
was the Bobcats before they traded J-Rich, who will be one of my all time favorite players. Pacers are most definitely my second favorite team. JP. It’s probably a tie between the Bulls and Thunder. Rose and Durant will be superstars.
My 2nd fave team was Jordan's Chicago Bulls
Have you guys ever thought that maybe the Warriors are being chosen as their 2nd fave team is because THEIR team can kick OUR team’s bums all the time? lol
The probability that you just read my signature: 1

Here's an interesting take on why people like the Warriors so much
http://protectthepaint.com/2009/08/21/why-the-warriors-are-everyones-second-favorites/
I also don’t have a second favorite team. I usually just cheer against the Lakers, Cavs, Celtics, and Spurs.
Guys, we aren't the 2nd favorite anymore.... we are 4th
somehow the raptors just are dominating.

Yeah, we rock
My 2nd favorite team tends to change by the year (hence why it’s a SECOND favorite team), but I’m currently going with the Rockets. That team nearly upset the Lakers with a group of misfits lacking superstar help. Look for them to return to the top for the 2010-2011 season.
"It is amazing how much can be accomplished if no one cares who gets the credit." - Coach John Wooden
It's probably because
Like us, there are so many people around that love and live basketball they check their teams blogs every single day and check NBA.com and ESPN and saw that Anthony Randolph and Morrow smashed in the SL. He also joined the USA select team which is a very very very very great accomplishment for him since we all knew how immature and bad this guy was exactly a year ago. His progress really is somewhat unbelievable and a dream come true for warriors fans. If other teams are already noticing that we have a future HOFer then how scary will our core be in a couple years?

I disagree with this. He just takes too much upon himself, when he feels like everything is on his shoulders. He’s got to trust his teammates this season, and I think he will with Monta back, especially. We’ll see more of Jack deferring to Monta’s scoring, I suspect.
I hate those normal-sized midgets. What are they called again? Oh, yeah. People.

interesting comment re: golden age of players in NBA
I have to disagree. With very few exceptions those players we celebrate the most dont relaly make their team better, they simply take over the game when they have to.
Wins mean everything, so that is not all bad, but I would much rather watch an awesome team than one dominant man (cleveland?) any day.
I dont think we should bring out the “goldern age” term until we reach a time where we have great teams truly battling each other.
As much as I hate to say it, Lakers are there, San Antonio has been for a while despite being boring to watch, and I think Denver is actually close. Other than that, we have a long way to go. Detroit was blown up, Celtics arent quite there-they just have a different guy to lean on every night….

Your comments are hard to respond to since you didn’t use the “reply” function and they don’t seem to have any context. So something like this:
“With very few exceptions those players we celebrate the most dont relaly make their team better, they simply take over the game when they have to.”
doesn’t seem very clear who these players you’re talking about are. If you’re talking about guys like Wade, Lebron and Chris Paul, you’re simply wrong, they make their teams much better and cause their teams to win much more, they simply don’t have as much talent around them as some other organizations.
“I dont think we should bring out the "goldern age" term until we reach a time where we have great teams truly battling each other.”
What exactly constitutes great teams? Isn’t it all relative? I would think two very good teams would make for a much more epic battle than one great team (think Jordan, Pippen, Rodman, etc.) beating up on other teams that may or may not be good. How do you qualify a great team if you don’t even count the Celtics, who arguably have 3 HoF players barely over their primes, and another arguably all-star caliber guy in Rondo? Yet Denver is a great team?

For sure, the old Kings lakers playoffs and the more recent warriors Dallas series were two of the most entertaining series I can recall, although the 1998 game 6 of the Bulls and Jazz was pretty good too :>)

Of course those players make their teams better...
How could they not. Outside of the thing they do well they draw double teams and make up for lack of skill or knowledge in the other players, but that doesnt mean the teams play well as a team.
Cavs of last year are a great example. LeBron is awesome and makes everyone look better, but they did not play well as a team often failing to score or play good team defense in crunch time. I believe they got used to watching LeBron when they didnt know what else to do which is exceptionally dangerous at the NBA level.
I would reserve the term Golden age for a time when there are at least 4 teams who play well as a team on a consistent basis and it looks like any of the 4 could win the championship. Maybe my standards are too high, but the term “Golden Age” requires such.
We are in a golden age of talent, no doubt about that, but how much should we celebrate that talent when the coaches often fail to figure out how to use it?
by warriorsvictim on Aug 27, 2009 9:26 AM PDT up reply actions
I just see this as really subjective and don’t necessarily see where you’re coming from. It seems you’re looking for teams with their talent more spread out as opposed to having a couple of superstars carrying the load. I disagree strongly about the Cavs not playing good team basketball – rather, I think it’s a product of the fact that the players Lebron is surrounded suck. As a team they play good defense, and between Williams and Lebron they can get a decent number of good shots, they just don’t have much offense outside of those two. What you should understand is superstars win championships – having a team like Detroit that seemingly plays well as a team because nobody really stands out from the rest is rare, usually it is a couple of great players carrying the load. That doesn’t make the team any better or worse, though.
