Who is your second favorite team?

Check out this article from espn.com

http://myespn.go.com/blogs/truehoop/0-43-69/Your-Second-Favorite-Team.html

The Warriors get a lot of love and it really got me thinking.  I have been trying to come up with a second favorite team for a long time.  I really enjoy the mess that is the Clippers, and when we beat them it is that much sweeter to have your favorite beat the number 2, in conference.

But, from a pure love of the game perspective, I am really torn.  I love watching LeBron play.  He is totally unique not only in today's game, but as a historical figure in the NBA the same way Pistol Pete or Big O were when you watch the reruns on espnclassic...but I hate the Cavs as a team. So far, the team has really let LeBron down and not been fun to watch.  I enjoy Chris Paul, but same thing, the rest of the team does not deliver.  Utah is consistenly good and entertaining, but I hate them almost as much as the Lakers, and that will never change.

When the Warriors are not on, I dont think I am a hoops fan anymore.  I am so thoroughly filled with Warriors blood after 30 years as a fan that I cannot even consider really rooting for another team.  I lose interest during the playoffs and spend more time on the court myself....and find myself turning more and more to other sports where I dont have such an emotional attachment and can watch from a love of the sport standpoint.

Is it possible that after so many years of ups and downs with our crazy ass team, that I have passed over the standard fan threshhold into the realm of complete lunacy? When I watch two other teams play I want them both to lose even though I know it isnt possible.

Anyone else with me on this or are you able to just switch over and root for one of our NBA enemies?

I read that article too...

and I would say that I enjoy watching the Oklahoma City Thunder. They have a really fun young core of Durantula, Green & Westbrook and when you add Harden into the mix…. they should be fun to watch this year. The team is young, athletic & they can score….. kinda like the Warriors #2.

On the other hand here are my top 5 worst teams to watch……
5.) Detroit Pistons
4.) Cleveland Cavaliers (with no Lebron they are #1)
3.) Indiana Pacers
2.) Utah Jazz (except for Deron)
1.) San Antonio Spurs (aka bore ball)

Someone needs to splurge on some good seats and watch the Cavs play in person. Even if you don’t like Lebron, I can’t see any rational way, after watching him with your own eyes, that you can deny he is the most entertaining player in the NBA.

right now its probably OKC. I’m a sucker for young, unproven talent, but I’m really looking forward to watching them this year. There’s just a whole lot of guys on that team that I wish were Warriors.
- Westbrook is basically the guard version of Anthony Randolph with his ridiculous size/athleticism/skillset package.
-Durant’s lack of any contribution at the defensive end is holding him back from being one of the league’s best players but he’s ridiculously fun to watch too.
-I’ve always kinda like Thabo Sefolosha and he seems like a nice fit on the wing with Durant
-Ditto for Kyle Weaver, I was a huge fan of his when he was playing WSU, a guy I really wanted to see in a Warriors uni.
-I’m interested to see if Harden is really as ready to contribute at the NBA level as everyone says he is.
-Serge Ibaka is another guy I really want to see play in the NBA, he probably won’t contribute anything more than a few highlight reel dunks/blocks for at least the next couple years, but he could be fun to watch.
-I’ve always been a sucker for Livingston’s size/passing combination.
-I’m not really convinced any of Krstic, Collison, Mullens, or Swift are starting quality NBA big men, but if even one of them is that team could get really good really fast.
-Jeff Green is actually not a guy I’m real high on, but a lot of other people who know a lot about basketball like him a lot, so I probably shouldn’t leave him out.

there’s just a ton of flexibility and athleticism and fun in that lineup-
PG-Westbrook/Livingston/Weaver
SG-Harden/Sefolosha/Westbrook/Weaver
SF-Durant/Sefolosha/Green
PF-Green/Collison/Ibaka
C-Krstic/Collison/Mullens/Swift

have a very hard time rooting for any team

that leaves their dedicated fan base holding an empty bag and moving to another city. Not a good thing. Could you imagine how you would feel if the W’s would have moved to Oklahoma. Eff the Thunder.

by crab dribble cocktail on Aug 26, 2009 12:02 PM PDT up reply actions

so would your not root for the SF Giants because they left NY? I think you’ve been reading a little bit too much Bill Simmons. I really do sympathize with Seattle Sonic fans, but if you weren’t one of them why would you hold it against the Thunder? Do you really care that much?

Thing A

by sam23 on Aug 26, 2009 12:09 PM PDT up reply actions

no but the question is do you really like OK that much?

The move was 2 years ago. When did the Giants move? Were any of us alive? Thats not relevant. Eff the thunder!

by crab dribble cocktail on Aug 26, 2009 2:03 PM PDT up reply actions

Plus there were still two teams left in NY when the Giants left. Sonics fans have nothing.

I get why you would dislike that owner, but most of us dislike Cohan too. It doesn’t mean you should dislike the team does it?

by sam23 on Aug 26, 2009 10:34 PM PDT up reply actions

I agree 100% with sam on his rationale of the Thunder,

They are a good young team loaded with young talent and building their team the right way. I wouldnt call them ‘my second favorite’ team, but a team that I am very intrigued and will watch on league pass.

funny OKC came up twice

I like watching them too, and you are right, Durant’s lack of defense is so painful for someone with his talent that it is completely inexcuseable. If he changes that, I may be pursuaded to watch them more often

by warriorsvictim on Aug 26, 2009 10:13 AM PDT reply actions

I’d say the Magic are probably my second favorite team. I enjoyed watching their playoff run this year, there are plenty of ex-dubs to root for, plus my brother just moved to Orlando for Law School, so I’m sure I’ll hear more about them. Second favorite is probably the Blazers, there mix of youth and talent is hard to resist at times. I got love for OKC , but how do you even watch them with so few nationally televised games?

by Pearlsofwisdom on Aug 26, 2009 10:15 AM PDT reply actions

My 2nd favorite team is

whoever the Lakers are playing that night!

by crab dribble cocktail on Aug 26, 2009 10:44 AM PDT reply actions

No 2nd favorite team, however...

I agree with crab dribble – I root against the Lakers every time they play.

I also find Portland intriguing with their young talent, and their approach. Ex-Warrior Pritchard is a machine on draft day, and rarely comes out on the wrong side. He does have the financial backing of the owner to pay for draft picks; but the dude trades down, gets extra picks, and still gets the players he wanted all along. You see this more in football and hockey on draft day – he’s mastered the NBA version. Presti in OKC has followed, and has built that exciting team through the draft.

The only other team may be the Knicks. Not due to D’Antoni or anything. It’s just the games on national TV, in the Garden, with Marv (backbiter) Albert announcing have a certain old school vibe.

I was a big Jazz fan, but they showed so little heart at the end of last season, it’s hard to care anymore. If they can start showing they actually are motivated, they will be my 2nd favorite again.

I hate those normal-sized midgets. What are they called again? Oh, yeah. People.

by Naticus on Aug 26, 2009 1:06 PM PDT reply actions

Hornets!

as a native of New Orleans Im admittedly biased but the Hive is the most fun place to watch a game outside of Roaracle, and they have Chris Paul. I wish the Jazz had never moved though. They need that name back because the Hornets as a team name sucks only less than the Raptors or Heat, which sound like American Gladiator names. Its hard to put a shirt on with that dumbass dribbling insect on it.

The more I think about it...

When I was little I really liked watching the Lakers play. Who didnt love the Showtime team? I think I just hate Kobe so much that I cannot overcome it right now. Pao Gasol seems like a total jerk too actually. I have seen him act like a baby at the Roaracle and talk shit to other people for no apparent reason.

When Kove finally leaves, if the Lakers are still fun to watch and dont latch onto another asshole player, I have to say I might swing back around to liking them as a second team

by warriorsvictim on Aug 27, 2009 9:36 AM PDT reply actions

Do you realize as a Warriors fan you’re morally obligated to dislike the Lakers? There’s a geographic rivalry that simply requires it. If you’re a fan of a norcal team, you cannot like a socal team, and vice versa. And don’t come at me for this rule, I’m just the messenger – I think if you consult your soul you’ll find it’s God’s rule.

LOL that is so true,

I live in NY and I love the Golden State Warriors and really hate the Lakers. It’s kinda funny how that works.
