Andris Biedrins conditionally disqualified from Latvian National Team
Last week Latvian sports media were shaken with an announcement from a Latvian Basketball Union (LBU). Namely, after a disappointing start in European Championships (team did not qualify for the 2nd round, 1W-2L) and when everyone expected sacking of the head coach, the LBU held a council meeting and after 5 hours issued the following sentence.
A.Biedrins to be conditionally disqualified from the National Team of Latvia for a term of 1 year. Another 4 starting players were disqualified along with him (terms and conditions differ).
What this means is - if AB joins the team for a training camp (qualifying tournament is starting next year), and "demonstrates unprofessional conduct" he shall be asked to leave the team.
Why was the decision carried out? Apparently he, along with 4 other players were "living it up" during the training camp, rather than focusing his energy on helping the team become better, and ultimately win a game or two more than the team managed in the Eurobasket...
If you wish, I can supply with details as to the rumored unsportsmanslike conducts that took place during the training camp. Of course, there hasn't been an official statement from AB. Which is why I decided to post this and sort of degrade his image a bit overseas. Hopefully, a US journalist will ask him what happened and how does AB feel about this, because apparently he refused a comment to Latvian media.
This FanPost is a submission from a member of the mighty Golden State of Mind community. While we're all here to throw up that W, these words do not necessarily reflect the views of the GSoM Crew. Still, chances are the preceding post is Unstoppable Baby!

Yep
They have principles. If you negatively effect the performance of our team, you don’t get to play on our team. Pretty straight forward, if you ask me. Am I concerned? Not really. Just means less chance of him getting injured in the offseason.

I'm sure Andris cares
It reflects poorly on his image back home. He looks like some guy who’s made it big and doesn’t care about who got him there anymore, etc. He should be ashamed, if the allegations are true, even if it’s not a big deal. Just part of the growing up process.

I hvnt been back on this site specifically of stuff like this
“I decided to post this and sort of degrade his image a bit overseas”
why would anyone want to degrade another person??? That doesnt make sense… you dont have anything better to do? But to lower someone? Come on man I understand that he may or may not have done something wrong but at the same time you dont help the fire burn something up come on man
Stop crying about it alright?!?! GO MULLIN.

Well, it is actual Warriors news, assuming it’s true. But I agree that the choice of words (“degrade” in particular) is pretty terrible.
I’m don’t doubt that he was kicking it with his ol’ Latvian pals. Big whoop. If the upshot of this is that he gets to spend more time here in the offseason working on his FT shooting and core strength, rather than feeling obligated to “defend his country” against vastly more populous and powerful hoops powers like Spain and Russia, so much the better.
There will be no extra point!

I welcome this
I want our players having fun in the off season and coming back focused on hoops. I know this anti-nationalism is usually frowned upon, but AB is payed to play here, not there, and they had no chance anyways.
by warriorsvictim on Sep 28, 2009 9:50 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
So you’d rather have them having fun in the offseason than working hard to improve their game? I’m not sure if everyone understands what it takes to be a great player – it’s a lot of work, and there are NBA players out there with all the talent that put that work in all year round….
by Missing Barry on Sep 29, 2009 6:14 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
you welcome this?
IMO this just reaffirms what is abundantly clear about Andris: his work ethic leaves something to be desired. Playing in the NBA for several years now and adding absolutely nothing to your offensive repertoire? You can’t tell me that if he was relentless in the off-season he couldn’t develop at least 1 low post move, or god-forbid, develop a free-throw form that at least looks like it has a chance to get the ball in the basket.

I think you’re jumping to conclusions. Biedrins never strikes me as out of shape, for example. I suspect he’s working very hard to maintain his conditioning.

The number of players who enter the league as terrible FT shooters who get better is real real low. Unless you accept that every last one of them is not a hard worker (and to accept this goes contrary to what coaches have said about many of them) then there’s much more to it than this. It seems that improving FT shooting substantially, especially for those who aren’t good at it, is one of the most difficult things to do. Seems like it should be easy, but empirical evidence suggests otherwise.
Yeah, he’s offensively limited, but he’s also able to play within his limits to the order of being very, very efficient. I disagree that he’s added nothing. I’ve seen him on occasion put the ball on the floor to get by someone. He’s much better at receiving a pass while cutting than he was. No, he’s not Olajuwon. No, he never will be, but the statement that he hasn’t improved just isn’t true.
You seem to be using the word “abundantly” in a manner different from the way most people do. It’s not abundantly clear that he’s not a hard worker. If it were abundantly clear, one would expect that a coach, especially Nellie who doesn’t seem to favor Andris anyhow and has never been afraid to call out a player as being lazy in public, to have mentioned it. But they don’t. They don’t criticize his work ethic because there’s nothing to criticize.

Not if they are willing to learn to shoot underhand like the great RickBarry, I could shoot 80% that way when I was in 7th grade (and I’m not the great RickBarry )

there is a simple free throw learning routine
It involves sitting on the chair under the basket and shooting to develop trajectory. Sabonis, for example was a terrible shooter, until he was taught how to shoot properly using this technique. Most people don’t practice to develop their muscle memory consistently enough, as result they try to compensate during their shot too much.

Well the stories I've heard...
are that he partied a lot. Basically those guys according to rumors got their DQ because they mostly partied. They made a camp fire or something in a hotel room, vomited( after partying) the airport, one guy broke out the hotel door and carried it with him. Basically drunk fun. And didn’t train so hard, partied more than practiced.. Well those are the rumors. And Beans acknowledged that he had done wrong, that’s why he got just 1 year conditionally.

Andris a party animal?
So the well paid NBA player goes back home for the summer to “play” with his countrymen and decides to show them a good time. Maybe too good of a time. Well, that sound like the kind of poor judgment you’d expect to see on occasion from someone in their early 20’s. I can see it now…
AB: “Hey guys tonight we are going to party like Baron Davis the night before the most important game of the season!!”
I guess there is something to be said for role models. I hope he learned a lesson and did a little growing up this summer. It was pretty irresponsible, and I’d be bummed if I were a fan of the Latvian national basketball team. I wouldn’t get too upset though. If you think this kind of thing is uncommon just take a look at that website with all the pictures of drunk athletes.

Uh-oh… Please Steph!! Put down the cup and step away from the coeds.

Just tell us how much fun he had in Latvia.
Then we’ll chuckle because we’re just happy he didn’t get hurt or come back dog tired.
If the worst thing he did was make a vodka tonic with some flowery fruit-infused vodka then that is a good thing.

Early-Mid 20's
People in their early-mid 20’s do stupid things— just like my friends and I starting this blog.
All jokes aside this doesn’t make it right of course (whatever it is exactly that’s being described here?), but let’s not act like silly drunken acts aren’t common. As long as there’s no DUI’s, no physical harm, etc there’s mostly just a lot of embarrassment for that the 20-somethings have to deal with.

The problems I have with this
The reason I posted this is to alert Warriors fan base and prepare them for a not so good season by Andris. Here’s what he could’ve done instead of drinking:
1. Use Eurobasket to develop own potential. If you remember then the last off season there were Eurobasket qualification. During that AB played major role on the team both on defense AND offense. Averaged >20 points a game and single-handedly made sure Latvia qualifies for Eurobasket finals. I clearly remember how psyched GSW fan base was to see the videos posted during that off season. I was sort of expecting a similar progress this year. Of course, AB didn’t care, didn’t try etc. So it left a lot to be desired. He should have taken an advantage of his special role on the national team and develop, so the GSW would benefit from that this coming season.
2. If you want to party rather than set an example for young players, refuse to play for National Team. Everyone will understand. Hell, I understand that it is a lot to ask to play 82 games a year, relax a month, and then again start practicing and playing (without pay). But there is always an opportunity to take time off (see Kirilenko, Nowitzki etc)
3. The work ethic that AB has demonstrated leaves guessing if he hasn’t gotten too comfortable and perhaps he’s done improving. He got a contract extension, why bother trying?? This is what I’m most afraid of, because he has potential and I’d like to see him continue to develop. He’s only 21 y.o.
On other note, I acknowledge a poor choice of word “degrade” in the original post. What I wanted to say is – "alert fans overseas of AB’s recent work ethic.
And again, I really don’t mind athletes partying during off-season. I even advocate for that if that’s the medicine that works. I cannot imagine intensively training and playing for 9-10 months a year, that must suck not to be able to relax on occasion. Just do it on your own time, not national team’s time!

Oh I’m not doubting you at all. 1-4 are all great points that I agree with and I’m one of the few Warrior fans who has doubts about Biedrins’ work ethic and desire to improve post-contract in particular. My point is that the partying isn’t really that shocking to me as people that age just do dumb things all the time.
