Around SBN: Fighters React to Nick Diaz's Positive Drug Test

Internet Era Echo Chamber

Isn't it striking how Jackson and Ellis are essentially saying the same things that we've heard repeated over and over from sportswriters and disgruntled fans? The writers and disgruntled fans then turn around and use this as justification for their positions. I wonder what would have happened if their were not so much coverage of the "Ellis and Curry are too small to play next to each other" issue.

Star-divide

What if there wasn't so much negativity based on last year's win total. 29 wins without Ellis, with other extensive injuries, can easily be spun as a positive. There's more here than people - like Jackson - are giving the Warriors credit for.

Ellis appears to be doing what he can to backpedal from his "can't play with Curry" stance honestly to show trust in Nelson. He also talked a lot about "turning a negative into a positive" on media day. Ellis seems to get that he needs to be a leader to be truly successful, and that means injecting some hope, commitment, and direction into the Warriors.

At least, that's what I hope I'm seeing.

There’s a fanshot with the quotes you refer to. I like what I’m hearing. The only drama right now is Jack wanting to go elsewhere, but that is Jack. He needs to win and has a lot of doubts about this season. But if we do win, the drama goes away. We’ll see how things turn out.

Welcome to the Pit of Despair! Don't even think about trying to escape.

Well we know what we know, not talking about it doesn’t make it less true.
They are too small to play together and 29 wins was pathetic after being a rising playoff team two years ago.

I agree that they are probably too small to play next to each other against bigger guards. The point is, if not for all the talking, does Ellis feel the need to say anything? If Jack isn’t hearing sportswriters and fans saying the team isn’t very good, does he feel the need to demand a trade? The answer to both of these questions may in fact be “yes,” but I thought it was worth discussing.

29 wins last year without Monta, with the other injuries the Warriors had, with Crawford/Harrington’s “contributions,” and Nellie focused on “seeing what we’ve got” with his rest-a-vet program after conceding before the start of the year that injuries had ruined it; 29 wins under those circumstances is quite impressive and reflects very positively on the players that made them happen.

When injuries took David Robinson away from the Spurs team he played for they were 35 games worse in the standings. When Wade was out of the Heat lineup in 07-08, they were horrendous. The Houston Rockets of the last few seasons are the exception, not the rule. Injuries show up in a teams record.

In other words, this Warriors team is far better than almost anybody is giving them credit for. Yes there are problems (Rowell,) and those problems could cause this season to not live up to its potential, but, without the negative cheerleading, maybe those problems end up being much smaller.

If you watch the tapes of the media day interviews I think you’ll see that the guys are in good spirits and quite positive about the season and the negative hype is all in the minds of everyone else.

Size isn't everything

I have a hard time with the concept that two 6’3" guys can’t play together in the back court. Two guys who are blazing fast, can get steals and who can score at will can play together just fine. It is yet to be seen, but there is a real good chance that Ellis and Curry will become that duo. The other team will have to adjust to them. Especially if their 6’8 2 guard keeps getting left in the dust on a fast break. If he tries to post them up and show that he can score over them I can see Randolph , Biedrens, Turiaf and yes, even Wright contributing a little discouragement to him.

I agree that it isn’t as cut and dried as Ellis’ comments made it out to be. Mismatches are mismatches and they can often work in your favor. A really good thing about the Warriors this year is they have lots of different options – they can go “small and fast” with Ellis and Curry, shoot the lights out with Curry and Morrow (or Ellis and Morrow, or Ellis Morrow and Curry,) or relatively large with Ellis, Jack, Azu or Ellis, Jack, Randolph, Wright. Depth is going to be a real strength for the Warriors this year, especially if the young turn out to be as good as advertised.
