If his contract is voided
the Warriors should definitely sign him for around MLE.

I dunno
I don’t think we need that kind of distraction or goofballness on the team.

am I allowed to say...
Hell No?
I wouldnt want that idiot within 10 miles of the arena…. just in case he thinks it is funny to drive the wrong way down the freeway before a game….
I would like to see him get at least a 5 year ban for what was beyond simple stupidity….. The NBA MUST make an example of him… hopefully the more intellectually challenged other players in the NBA and kids coming through high shcool and college will then know that no matter who you are… GUNS and the NBA have no place being linked….

also forgot to add...
I think ANY Athlete that decides to do something that ends up in a jail sentence…SHOULD mean the end of their sports career…its the only way we get sports stars to think about how truly lucky and fortunate they are to be paid that amount of money to do something they love… We all make choices in our lives…and we should have to live with the consequences if we make bad choices…not simply be given a light slap on the wrist and told…..“yeah your a cool guy…we forgive ya…hey come play for us…”… sod that!
I felt the same about Michael Vick…I feel the same about Arenas… EGO it seems, takes over common sense….and unfortunately…we dont make big enough examples of stupidity…when a moment of common sense would say to anyone with half a brain…“this is probably not a good idea for me to be doing…”

I wont argue your points about stupidity and EGO but...
…its the only way we get sports stars to think about how truly lucky and fortunate they are to be paid that amount of money to do something they love…
I’m pretty sure all professional athletes worked very hard during the course of their life to get to where they are, it has nothing to do with luck and being fortunate, it has to do with dedication to perfect what you love to do.
But as I said before, I wont argue your points regarding his judgement, but I also believe in second chances.
yes an no...
There are thousands of athletes across all manner of sports that never get the lucky break despite huge talent, hard work…. luck and fortune does have part to play…

Are you kidding me?
Look at what other people in the NFL and NBA have done that did not get them jail-time or suspensions as severe as Arenas. Arenas brought unloaded guns in a locker room…. stupid yes…. dangerous….not really.
Stephen Jackson attacked people and actually shot a loaded gun and all he got was a 7 game suspension. Ruben Patterson forced his childs babysitter to give him oral sex, yet that wasn’t as big as this. Pacman Jones left a man paralyzed yet he played in the NFL after this. Kobe Bryant raped a woman.
The point is, no matter how much people try to look good, and stand up against problems, they simply don’t care! They pick and choose to what offends them. People don’t care that in Africa, people are being killed everyday by evil, evil malitias. But they care so much that a guy brings an UNLOADED gun in a locker room. I’m sick of America’s obsession with guns as well as most of you. But didn’t Delonte West have loaded shotguns in the back of his truck a couple months ago, yet you don’t bring that up at all. You simply don’t care, and admitting that will set you free.

Very simple really....
The NBA rules, state no firearms may be brought into a facility… the State of Washington…has made it’s intentions known…
HOWEVER… do us all a favour and dont tell us what we may or may not be thinking…or what we may or may not care about… you’ll get less flak as a result.
Oh and btw… the bold statement about Kobe……

Yeah, just a bad joke. Normal guys do things like that everyday. Who turned him in anyway? what kind of team mates would do that?. There’s lots of bad guys doing bad things with guns but Hibachi gets the shaft? Another example of Stern’s racism? Too much like the “dress code” to suit me.

I woudn't be against the Warriors signing him if his contract is voided
but the guy better shape up and do some community service, and quit taking every little thing as a joke. If he shows that he has changed and gets back in the league, then he will probably be looking for a Maggette type contract(7-8 mil a year but less years), which would be pretty good deal if the Warriors were to sign him.
Big deal
He brought an unloaded gun to the arena. He made a mistake. I think a DUI is FAR worse and FAR more dangerous.
He’ll be back.

classic example of what is so very wrong now.....
Do you think it would be no big deal for me to sit next to you with an unloaded gun at the Oracle Arena? Is that no big deal… Or for me to hold it to your head in the car park where you dont know if it is loaded or not and I tell you I am going to blow your brains all over your windshield….resulting in you soiling your pants…. would that be no big deal?
The poor bugger facing the gun has no clue whether its loaded or not…. be that in an NBA arena or a locker room…. its far from being no big deal…its a HUGE deal…and I truly hope that one day you are not faced with a firearm….
Of course a DUI is terrible… more so if it involves any form of accident… but in terms of severity of the law… pointing or intending to point a fully working firearm at someone should carry the same penalty as someone who points a loaded firearm at someone….
What if….. just for arguements sake… someone had loaded a round into the chamber without Arenas knowledge… (assuming that everyone understands that a locker is about as secure as the GSW Season Ticket Lockers that came in the post…) How big a deal would it be if he then pulled the trigger at a colleague and it when off and it killed the guy… ? “But….but…..but…it was empty…..how?….wha?……I dont understand?…its not my fault?…..” dont worry mate……its no big deal…
I’d say it was a pretty big deal sir…..

Well said
I can’t believe he doesn’t have a license for any of the guns.
This is Kristin Kreuk, now zip it. - GTTM
no licenses/permits
because the state of Virginia (Arenas’ residence) doesn’t require them! one of the linked articles has a fuller description of his extensive accumulation of firearms, which undermines his excuse that he wanted to take the four handguns away from where his kids were (what he needed were gun safes with the ammo and magazines locked up completely separately from the fire arms).
Uhhh
I’d be more scared of a drunk driver than someone pointing an unloaded weapon at me.

He didn't even point the gun.
And yes, i would be much more concerned with someone who shoots guns, sexually assaults women, and drunk drivers.
And how did any of you who are angry about Arenas not even mention the terrible acts of Chris Henry. He beat his wife up, chased her down, and un-tragically died after falling out of the truck. Arenas didn’t and wasn’t going to harm anyone, while Ruben Patterson and Stephen Jackson types have actually caused irreconciable harm to other human beings. Just admit, you honestly don’t care about issues like this. You just pick and choose what you want to listen to.

firstly....
anyone who beats a woman up and then falls out the back of the truck and dies….does really need discussing… greater forces were delivering justice that day…
Secondly…. do you honestly think an unloaded gun is harmless? when does it become….more than harmless? when it gets stolen….? When it then ends up in the hands of a kid on the street who then loads it and kills someone with it…?
As to Jackson…..extremely stupid, and no I dont think he should have been carrying a gun, but there are indications that he used it in semi-self defence….without knowing all the details…. hard to comment further…
As to your very bold accusation that Kobe raped a woman???? Got a good lawyer have you?
Again…I know nothing of the Patterson case…so I cannot comment…..
BUT do yourself a favour…and DONT tell me what I DO and DONT choose to listen to…a GUN has no place in a sports venue PERIOD……

How do you know if a gun is loaded or not?
Are you willing to risk your life to find out?
by IQofaWarrior on Jan 15, 2010 4:13 PM PST up reply actions
the gag/joke...is kinda pointless if you say...
“Now….before I start….I would just like to demonstrate that this is an unloaded gun …see…I am working the action…making sure the chambre is clear….and there are no rounds in the clip…….Now….. I am going to point it at you….. you know it is unloaded….. but it will be funny I promise….because you dont know if it is loaded or not….oh…..wait…hang on….damn….Kinda poinless now isnt it, if you know its empty……that’s not even vaguely funny….”
I.E. the point of the gag is to make someone crap their pants….. otherwise there is no gag!?! Still think it’s harmless? trust me….. when someone points a gun at YOU…you are going to be very hard pressed to control your sphincter…..especially if your stupid enough to assume it is not loaded!
The golden rule of any formal firearms training, no matter which country you are in…is that you NEVER point a gun at someone, unless you are prepared to use it…. so therefore the point of him having the guns at the Arena was firstly to play a gag on a teammate… then suddenly after legal advice, it was to store the guns safely away from his children who might have found them…… righhhhhhhhhhhhtttttttttttt………..
But hey..they were only empty…so surely its cool for his kids to play with empty guns isn’t it Hawk?

Eh
I’m on Arenas’ side. I hate how one mistake can jeopardize your whole life but that’s life aint it? He should be suspended for the time he gets sentenced from the court and thats about it. Anything more than that isn’t all too fair. He’s given so much to communities that it’s sad to see all of what he’s worked for get taken away from him in an instant.
He looks done in Washington.
It’s going to be interesting to see how this plays out. Their management basically exiled him to his own island. I bet Gil is feeling mighty perturbed by that and probably will be looking for another team that wants him. The interesting part is that Gil is owed 80 million and early word is that the Wizards Can’t void. I don’t know what the resolution will be, but I’d be more than happy to sign him for a reasonable price.
Warriors, Stupidest franchise in the league.
I told Randolph that Bill Russell would tell him to keep that ball in play and start the break.
RANDOLPH: "I know. But sometimes, you gotta let ‘em know."
(MT)
These were the guns Gilbert had
Appearing in the court in a gray suit and tie, Arenas admitted to surrendering to authorities four weapons: a .50- caliber gold-plated semiautomatic Desert Eagle with a magazine, a 500 Magnum silver Smith & Wesson revolver, a .45-caliber black semi-automatic Kimber Eclipse with a magazine, and a 9mm Browning with a magazine and an extended magazine.
Desert Eagle:

holy cow....
So they were’nt small calibre then…
I have fired all but one of those… the Kimber….fair to say that if someone pointed a Desert Eagle or a Magnum at me…. I just wouldnt see the funny side…
The Browning is standard issue for many combat pilots around the world and frankly in a self protection role, you would do more good if you threw it at your target….but the other three are pretty serious bits of kit…

appreciate your p.o.v.
and the expertise on military hardware large and small you share with us from time to time. don’t think you’re being fair to John Browning’s fine side arm, considering when it was designed (the 9mm parabellum round likewise of course), and how much 20-21st century fire arm evolution owes to him. the hi-power is extremely reliable, accurate, durable, more forgiving to its user, and its lighter weight compared to those other hand cannons has its advantages.
;)
I know mate…it was said slightly tongue in cheek, but a former colleague did tell me of a tale from GW1 where he unloaded a clip into a guy (sand jam on his rifle hence need to revert to the hi-power) and yet he kept coming for a while…not good. But yes I agree it has been a very reliable beast for many generations. I was just trained with my beloved SLR and a nice beefy 7.62 round which pretty much stopped anything in its tracks and so I came from the school of ‘big hole = good’ :)

So you are trying to tell me that Ruben Patterson was treated as fairly as Arenas..... he didnt get suspended or go to jail.... lets look at his resume.
Ruben Patterson has been involved in a number of off-the-court issues during his basketball career. Patterson would have to register himself as a sex offender to establish legal residency in many U.S. states, due to pleading guilty in 2001 to attempted rape of his child’s nanny in September 2000. It was reported that he forced the nanny to perform a sex act on him. In February 2001, Patterson was convicted of misdemeanor assault for attacking a man who scratched his car outside a Cleveland, Ohio night club. Patterson was arrested in 2002 for felony domestic abuse charges on his wife. His wife later dropped the charges and they divorced.
You tell me who got a harsher punishment….. A rapist/ wife beater, or a guy who has unloaded weapons…..

Seriously…..PRAY…you never face a weapon…because you wont know if it is loaded or not…you still have not answered if it is ‘cool’ or not dangerous… for his kids to play around with the firearms?… Lost…you are comfy in this because you KNOW it was unloaded…which begs the question…..why keep an ‘unloaded weapon’???? to BLUFF your hardness or deterent? If those guns were at te house…for self defence I presume…where were the shells? Otherwise…pretty pointless having them…
This is a thread to discuss the Arenas matter, so it is pretty obvious why we are not discussing other cases…

Do you even understand what the crime is?
Washington DC has very strict gun laws. If guns are found and you don’t have a license, you will get punished. If they are found outside of your home and you don’t have a license, you will get punished harder. I don’t know how it became that strict in DC, but that’s how it is right now.
Gilbert Arenas was found with 4 guns, all without a license. The US Attorney’s Office could have charged Gilbert with 4 separate counts of not having a gun license. But because Gilbert plead guilty and plea bargained, he got the charge reduced to 1 count for all 4 guns.
This charge has nothing to do with Gilbert playing a joke, or trying to scare someone. This charge has nothing to do with the Wizards or the NBA. This charge would have been the same if it was some John Doe found with a gun without a license.
As for losing his contract, that has nothing to do with the US Attorney’s Office. They don’t care about Gilbert’s contract. That has to do with the Wizards and the NBA.
Had Gilbert properly licensed his guns, the prosecution would not have charged Gilbert with felony gun possession. I’m not a lawyer and don’t know all the gun laws, so maybe they would have charged him with something lesser, like some “threatening with a gun” law, or perhaps no charges at all. Nevertheless, the issue with Gilbert and his contract remains as a separate issue with his employer, which is the Wizards and the NBA.
by IQofaWarrior on Jan 16, 2010 2:03 PM PST up reply actions
If the Wizards void his contract (doubtful) we should bring him back lol. In all seriousness, I feel bad for him. Yes he made a real dumb@$$ move, but I doubt he really meant to do any harm to Javaris. Gilbert just plays around a LITTLE too much for his own good.
