GAME THREAD #32: Golden State Warriors @ Blazers- New Year's Resolution, grab rebounds

Golden State Warriors at Portland Trail Blazers, Jan 2, 2010 7:00 PM PST

0910blazers-cunningham_medium

(Introducing Dante Cunningham, tonight's Warrior Killer)

Golden State Warriors (9-22) @ Trailblazers (21-13)

TV: CSN Bay Area | Radio: KNBR 650 (7:00pm PST)

Blog Buddy: Blazersedge

Happy New Year Warrior fans.  It's day 2 of 2010 and hope you all have been sticking to your new years resolutions so far.  One my early resolutions is not to yell at the television before the 3rd quarter of a Warriors game, it's not good for my blood pressure.  For the Warriors, their New Years Resolution should be to grab rebounds.

Lets see how that holds up tonight as the Warriors take on the Portland Trailblazers.  The Trailblazers have had similar injury woes like the Warriors but have been able to weather the storm in amazing fashion, winning 5 of their last 6 with impressive wins over the Mavericks, the slumping Nuggets, and the Spurs.  But what's most impressive is how they've dismantled each team, each team having a pretty meaty front court.  With Greg Oden and Joel Pryzbilla out, I'm amazingly shocked by the Trailblazers ability to adapt to these situations.

This also tells me how much LESS talented (or poorly coached) the Warriors are if the Blazers can still produce wins without their SKILLED big men.  What might this spell for the Warriors....?

Star-divide

DOOM!

I know the Warriors had an impressive win over the Blazers last time they met.  I was at the game and in awe of how Warrior-like the Blazers played with all their turnovers and poor offensive execution. But Brandon Roy -- shoulder injury and all -- has put the team on his back like old Chinese ladies in Oakland do aluminum cans for recycling.  Meaning? STRONG (old Chinese ladies included).

But the Warriors haven't been too shabby with the return of Ronny Turiaf and Andris Biedrins.  A lot more rebounds and defense and, more importantly, a lot more smiles among teammates.

So what can we expect tonight?

Predictions:

  • Warriors by 4 or Blazers by 9
  • Monta Ellis nets 33 points and 6 assists
  • Turiaf with 4 blocks
  • Dante Cunningham - 17 points
  • Lockdown defense by Monta Ellis on Brandon Roy
  • Jerryd Bayless with 22 points, 16 of them off freethrows

What are your predictions for tonight's game?  And what are your new years resolutions?

I don't know why

but this seems like an easy victory..i guess given our play over the last 3 games and the fact that biedrins and turiaf are only going to get better.

The Warriors have done poorly in Portland

You might see some egregious refereeing against the Warriors leading to a blowout if recent patterns hold.

by breaker on Jan 2, 2010 10:13 AM PST reply actions

BRoy will answer the call

You know he’s going to go off. Too good of a player to let Ellis shut him down twice. As long Ellis gets his it will even out. This game will be won in the post – I’m hoping AR has a big game because of Portland’s lack of bigs

by tjmax on Jan 2, 2010 10:17 AM PST reply actions

Always fun to read the other side.

Blazers have won despite the injury bug. And even though I watched the games, I have no idea why. Perhaps the other teams thought that the Blazers would be an easy out and were surprised. Perhaps the other teams had off games. Perhaps the Blazers are the deepest team in the NBA, all the way down to their 24th injury exemptioned man. Maybe a lot of it has to do with Brandon Roy, though the Warriors have had his number in the past. But I think the biggest reason is effort. None of the teams we beat has given a better effort than the Blazer third string, hoping to hustle themselves into the second string when the injuries heal.

Now, from what I have seen of the Warriors, which admittedly is very little, they can certainly give an equal or greater effort out on the floor than the Blazers. Will they? Hard to say. Sometimes when I have watched, they give more effort than anyone I have ever seen. Other times, they look like they’re coasting, even if they shouldn’t be.

Effort will be key. Because the Blazer remnants are allowing a ridiculous field goal percentage due to their inability to stop anything in the paint. Though if the Warriors don’t try to take advantage of that, it will be a long game. I wish I knew what to expect, but after the last month, I have no idea anymore. It should be an entertaining game whatever happens.

Agree: attack the paint

Let Monte keep working his jumper (quite the sight lately.)

Maggs to the hoop!

Either he wracks up the fouls on them (already short of bigs) or as referenced above, the calls go against him (always a possibility with him!)

I’ll take the risk/reward.

by WillyWhiteShoes on Jan 2, 2010 11:58 AM PST up reply actions

Effort has not been a problem with the Warriors

The problems have been lack of experience and lack of identity, leading to disastrous 3rd or 4th qtr collapses and inability to close the game, thus giving the game to the opponents. The last few games though, there hasn’t been any of those. There have been 3rd or 4th qtr runs, but we answered those. I think that started with the road Hornets game about 4 games ago, which was a close loss. Since then, it’s been a hard fought Suns win, Celtics win, and @Lakers close loss.

Predictions...

- The Golden State Warriors beat the Portland Trailblazers with the final score of 110-98
- Monta Ellis does not shut Brandon Roy down
- Jerryd Bayless…
- We’ll show them who the real injury prone team is.
- Andris Biedrins returns to his old self, not too bad tonight.
- Our big men FINALLY dominates their big men for once.

NYR – watch the warriors win a championship in 2012.

Rebounding is the key to victory

- Alridge, Pryzbrilla, and Oden are out

But they still have the all star Brandon Roy, but hopefully Monta can take care of him like before. I think the Dubs have a good chance at winning this, just as long as Randolph / Turiaf / Biedrins rebound a lot and maybe have second chance points.

by DubsFan408 on Jan 2, 2010 1:28 PM PST reply actions

Aldridge is out!?

/wrists. I was hoping he was gonna play. Blake is out too… So the Blazers – Oden, Przy, Rudy, Batum, Outlaw, Blake and Aldridge….

My best guess for the Starting lineup:
Miller
Roy
Webster
Pendergraph
Howard

Or maybe they’ll go small
Miller
Bayless
Roy
Webster
Pendergraph/Howard

Trail Blazer fan here

Interesting game preview for sure. Could this be Dante Cunningham’s chance to shine? Maybe. But a more likely candidate among the Trail Blazer’s rookie “unknowns” might be Jeff Pendergraph. He has looked solid given important time on the floor. Pendergraph is a big body and is drawing comparisons to Brian Grant of Blazer folklore due to his energy, hustle and fearless play. Prediction numero uno is Pendergraph steals Cunningham’s thunder tonight with a double double say 12 and 15.

Just in case you didn’t know, the curse on the Blazers continues as Steve Blake is hospitalized with pneumonia. Bayless is the guy who takes advantage of opportunities and I see this as chance for Bayless to really rack up some points. He’ll get plenty of minutes, and could be the, nay will be the star of the game. Prediction #2 is Bayless is game’s top scorer. Hopefully Rex will eat a few bananas before the game so he doesn’t cramp up like the other night.

Don’t count this Trail Blazer team out. On second thought do. It seems if your guys are over-confident it gives us better odds. Don’t be screaming at the TV or throwing the remote before halftime when Juwann Howard scores his 10th point off that free throw line J he rarely misses. Prediction #3 is Trail Blazers win by 1.

This is the Warriors game to win or lose. In the past they have killed us with outside shooting and Maggette having the refs in his pocket on the flop. If Golden State is hot from deep this game won’t be close. My hope is they get out of their game trying to attack Portland inside and it works against them.

Hey best of luck this season after tonight’s game and until we play again.

Good luck tonight.

With 7 of our rotation players out and 4 out of 5 starters missing, I’m can’t say that I feel very confident against the Warriors. I don’t think the Blazers have enough firepower to match up. Historically, the Warriors have given the Blazers problems as well. I’m hoping Nellie and the boys underestimate the Blazers and keep our guys in the game. With Roy in the 4th quarter, I feel good about our chances if the game is close.

really enjoyed montas D on Roy, while he was still able to dominate on offense, hoping to see an encore tonight…also hoping that beidrins will be back to the double double machine he was in the beginning of last season. Looks like it should be a pretty entertaining game tonight!

by scraider3 on Jan 2, 2010 3:49 PM PST reply actions

Yeah

He called them biased most of the article and Monta being whiney. The Monta part is true, and the Fitz/Barnett comments were half true. Yes, Fitz and Barnett are biased a lot, but their also good commentators. They praise other players from opposite teams, although they do make a lot of foul call mistakes. But I like them 2 ass the Dubs’ commentators, Fitz – the over excited announcer that screams GOOOOOOD and Barnett the basketball wizard.

Important game here

After a nice 3 game stretch, can the warriors continue and take advantage of an depleted team? Of course the blazers thought they could decimate our 6-7 man roster last time we met, so we have to be careful.

Most likely we need the Anthonys to step up today and as always get good shots (aka pass the ball)

If we play big lineups all night, with two of Randolph, Biedrins and Turiaf on the floor at all times, we will win. If we screw around with smallball and pass up the rebounding edge their injuries have gifted to us, we may well lose.

This is an incredibly simple coaching job for Nellie: normal lineup = win. Let’s see if he’s up to it.

The W’s are unpredictable, we don’t have a lot of continuity yet, were playing more on instinct, so this game could go either way depending on turnovers and fouls…

The one thing we are starting to develop is a solid back court, the more Curry gets a chance to develop with Monta entrusting him with the ball the better we will be…no more lazy passes…

Maggs knows his role and has slipped into it and is playing as good as anyone for his min….

AR is still in the learning curve but seems to come through for the most part…

AB and RT are just getting back into playing shape. there is nothing being run for them yet…

So we don’t know yet how this team will gell together…if Monta has a bad game that could sink us, If I was the Balzers I would stop monta and dare anyone esle to beat them…..

I find flopping offensive and embarrassing. It seems like Maggette always gets away with a couple against the PTB and he really hams it up in the process.

FYI, the “lockdown” defense that Monta reportedly played on Roy earlier this season makes no sense to me. Roy was having a horrible first month of the season, like he does every year. Monta played well, but Roy was getting shut down by Toney Douglas.

We’ll see what happens tonight. I expect a Warriors win… the Blazer frontcourt is a 36 year old, a journeyman, and two second round draft picks.

Anthony Morrow is one of the best shooters in the world and went undrafted. Nice find, guys.

Also, if Nate actually trusted Bayless he could go for 30 tonight. He is able to get into the paint against the Warrior D.

Radmanovic...

Is so bad… How do you miss short on a tip 2 feet from the basket and then throw it to Turiaf 2 feet beside u?

by GSWfan4lyf on Jan 2, 2010 8:15 PM PST reply actions

watching him hurts

He shouldn’t even be in the NBA. I’ve seen so much basketball in my lifetime that I know “gamers” when I see one. Radmonovic is clearly not a gamer. The only explanation for that 2 feet pass to Turiaf at the 3 point line is that Radmonovic has absolutely no idea what to do when he’s on the court. He’s a guy that severely lacks confidence, and a guy that is the antithesis of toughness (which easily explains why he rarely jumps when defending inside the paint).

I’m sorry, but the Warriors could find much better players at his position in the D-League, a place where they found Bookie, c.j., Will Bynum (lil kid from Detroit), and Chris Hunter. It’s not even difficult to pull the trigger on Vlad. I don’t know why the dubs won’t do it. Getting a 6’10" power forward from the D-league who is HUNGRY for a shot at the pros is easily an upgrade from Vlad.

Don Nelson’s reason for keeping him makes some sense when you consider the Warriors’ brand of basketball (i.e. offense, offense, and more offense) because whether fans believe it or not, he actually does ‘stretch’ the defense. But the big problem with that is, the guy can’t shoot and he can’t rebound at his position, an area that the team sorely lacks in. At the end of the day, you ask yourself, is he helping? The answer is a resounding, NO!

Get rid of him. (and just when I say that, he jumps up for a rebound and forces a jump ball. way to go, Vlad. But oh… look at that, the blazers end up getting the ball back anyway).

I wouldn’t hesitate to add that players can easily solve that by not being so damn soft about things. No name players drive through the lane and expect calls in today’s brand of basketball. THAT, my friend, certainly contributes to the problem you’re referring to. The NBA and NFL have really softened up over the years, and it’s not just because of the refs and the change of rules.

All everyone ever says is “PUT RANDOLPH IN”. It pisses me off. He is NOT going to win the game for us. He is a good player, but c’mon, he cracks under tense situations EVERY TIME he is in. Great point on CJ...33 of the worst minutes you will ever see

AR misses one outside shot and he gets yanked CJ misses 8 and he stays in. Wasn’t CJ out with swine flu the last time when the Warriors beat Portland and for that matter Dallas? I keep forgetting the Warriors play him to prove they were smarter than everyone else by finding this undrafted star.

Slow paced teams

Are a major thorn to the side of the Warriors. The Blazers executed their game plan perfectly after the first quarter.

The Warriors on the other hand too many fouls and not very much patience on defense either. Against the Blazers gambling for steals is going to hurt.

Nellie

How many times did he just say “smalls?” Does he know the word “bigs?”

Even if you take away the 12 pts from free throws.

25pts 12-16 6rb 5a 2stl 1to is not a bad line. I dig Monta and I think that he does not get the respect he warrants in this league. That being said, Roy had a good game regardless of calls going his way.

Another Blazer fan

Anthony Randolph will be an all star next year, if Nelson let him play 30-35 minutes he would have had 25 points and 15 boards easy.

uhhh

how about he doesn’t get into massive foul trouble early on and he’ll stay on court. Even against juwan howard, dante cunningham, jeff pendergraph. an All star wouldnt have these problems…

There was no real mystery to this one. A man said nine hours ago:

“If we play big lineups all night, with two of Randolph, Biedrins and Turiaf on the floor at all times, we will win. If we screw around with smallball and pass up the rebounding edge their injuries have gifted to us, we may well lose.”

Don Nelson is coaching like an idiot. That was an embarrassment, top to tails, pillar to post, A to Z. If you think he gave us our best chance to win tonight, you straight-up have poop in your head.

GSOM, you are not a nation of fools. If you are here, it’s probably because you like basketball, and if you do, you probably have some elemental understanding of how the game works. And if you do, and you are clear-headed, you will realize that we could have just played bigger lineups all night and outrebounded and beaten this team. We had enough big guys to beat this team tonight. Instead, we gambled that our small guys were better than theirs, and not surprisingly, we lost. We threw a thoroughly winnable game straight in the garbage.

It’s sad enough to punt on the Warriors for the 900th season in a row; I don’t want to have to punt on this site, too. Y’all know better. This was crap coaching, and we should be angry about it.

Ladies and gentlemen, your Golden State Worriers.

Blame the coaching all you like

But the players are the ones who couldn’t toss the ball in an ocean- not Nellie’s fault. I agree he should have played his bigs more but the fouls they got made it tough as well. Overall, a bad loss by all warriors – players and coaches
