Postgame Quotes from warriors.com recap
Keith Smart
On Stephen Jackson:
"Well he’s been playing well already, another night that he had a good night. We’ve seen a lot of nights in here where he has played like that, where he gets hot with the way he can shoot it. He’s been playing well, well before this game here."
On Being Worried About The Team's Second Half Play:
"I don’t know if it’s a concern, but basketball is all about a rhythm, and all of a sudden you get a guy that’s been out for a couple of games with Monta (Ellis) coming back and trying to get into a rhythm where he’s been playing at before the ankle injury and now you have to start over again with getting him back into the flow of everything. Disappointing, but that’s how the NBA goes, still got to play the game and hope your guys will compete at a high level."
Andris Biedrins
On Being Worried About The Team's Second Half Play:
"Maybe a little bit, as you can see we are missing a lot of energy…and I don’t know why. Last couple of games we went down by a lot of points and it’s hard to come back at that point. I know we need really to come together and think about that because we’re not playing with a lot of energy right now."
On Team Fatigue:
"Maybe, maybe especially with Monta (Ellis) and Corey (Maggette) playing a lot and the lineup has been changing all the time and one guy’s out and one guy’s in so I think that plays a little factor."
Corey Maggette
On Stephen Jackson:
"It was good seeing Jack (Stephen Jackson). Personally he’s a great guy, I’ve been knowing him for a while. I was in his wedding so he’s a good guy and I’m glad he had a good game tonight. He’s been playing extremely well. The biggest thing with their team is their chemistry. The chemistry is the biggest part because everyone knows their role, and they get the ball to the right people at the right time, and make good decisions."
My Notebook
- By a vote of 1-0, I will now post all links to the Warriors Weekly Radio and Weekly TV shows that I find.
- Morrow will be reevaluated before the next home game against the Thunder, Sat Feb. 6th.
- With no room on the roster, Cartier will not be given a guaranteed contract.
- Warriors are rumored to sign Coby Karl next from the Idaho Stampede.
What's next?
- A 3 game road trip starting on Sunday @Thunder, 4pm.

I know this won't be popular, but I'm really sick of Monta's game.

I'm sick of it too.
The losing makes everything look ugly. On a winning team, Monta’s 26ppg would look spectacular, even with the turnovers. Just like what’s happening to Steve Nash being 2nd in the league in TOs, his team is winning and as a result no one puts a lot of emphasis on his flaws most of the time.

Whereas Monta’s is barely over 1.

I say we trade Ellis and Vladamir Radmonivic to the Nets for their first round draft pick. First of, it will save us a hell of a lot of cap space. Second and more importantly, we would have 2 lottery pick which can very well be pick #1, and #2 or #3. With these picks we should pick John Wall and Derrick Favors. John Wall will play our starting pg to fill monta and favors can either be backup to randolph or starting PF. Worst case senerio we get Patrick Patterson and Willie Warren who are pretty good players themselves so this trade can’t hurt. Our linup would look something like this:
pg- John Wall
sg- Stephan curry
sf-corey maggette
pf- Derrick Favors
C- Andris Beidrins
bench: azabuike, randolph, wright, anthony morrow, turiaf, watson, Raja Bell, 2nd round pick/FA/ D- leauger/ undrafted player/ summer league standout
I would also expect us to trade a 2 or three for ones to get more cap space and less players. Players that I see being traded by next year are beidrins, wright, and Cj Watson.
Also next year I think it would be awesome if the the warriors would have a team pre-game stratch so that nobody pulls anything or hurts themselves as easy. I was at this game and the only players I saw stretch were beidrins and maggette.
We need to change managment for our team to go anywere we just do!
This is what has to be done:
Chris Cohan/Robert rowell – Larry Ellison
Don Nelson- Byron Scott/ here is a new name for you Keith Dambrot(Akron University Baskeball- I don’t know there is something i really like about his coaching)
I didn’t mention Larry Riley on purpose because he’s only been the gm for less then a year and hasn’t done anything bad. Time will tell with him.
Yeah so tell me what you guys think of my idea.

I'm not sure why Favors would start as a rookie.
I think I’d rather have Wesley Johnson or Al Farouq or Evan Turner anyway. I think we need a talented young SF. We have enough talented young PFs.

Er. I’m pretty sure the salaries in that deal don’t match. ;-P They would if the Nets threw in, say, Simmons and Battie, but why on earth would a rebuilding team give up two big expirings — and their shot at LeBron, Bosh, Wade et al — for a tweener guard and a pile of garbage like VladRad? And … why in the name of John Wall would a rebuilding team give up an unprotected first round pick in this year’s draft for said garbage?
Seriously man: other teams (even the Nets!) have real fans and real front offices populated by real human beings whose job isn’t to help the Warriors out. Would you trade our unprotected first rounder and all our expiring contracts for, say, Keyon Dooling and Devin Harris?
There will be no extra point!

I’m on on the fence about trading him just because the talent is so high. If we kept him and got a new coach in here that can take control and utilize Curry & Monta correctly, we’d be a lot better.

Curry
how can his plus minus be 0??? He played 41 mins and the dubs lost by 11!!!
If he continues on his torrid pace, we could see some ROY votes go his way!
Rookie of the Year
Right now, I think Curry has probably stolen a few votes. As far as winning the award goes, he’s going to need Evans to regress especially in the scoring. If Curry can work up his scoring to around 18 points a night and Evans drops to around 19.5 points a night, he has a shot at stealing the award because he’ll be right up there in assists, beating him in steals and shooting a higher percentage.

I don’t think Curry has a shot at ROY unless we trade Monta or Maggette. Curry isn’t going to force up the amount of shots needed to raise his scoring average enough unless a huge chunk of shots opens up because of someone else leaving.

#1 Overall Pick in the 2010 NBA Draft?
It sucks to think like a loser, but if we keep losing like this we might actually pull off a steal at the lottery.
John Wall could be a Warrior, but if we value Monta and Curry so much we could package the 1st pick in a trade for an impact player; a young all-star big man. Either that, or just keep the 1st pick and draft a SF or big man. Another option would be to draft John Wall, and trade Monta or Curry, maybe even both.
This losing season could end up putting us in a position to make a BIG improvement to our team. I still think the Warriors are a 6-9th seed caliber team (the injuries held us back this year); having a high draft pick and an opportunity to get a great player will make us even more better, especially for the future. That would be like the Phoenix Suns or the Portland Trailblazers (the current 6th and 7th seeds in the West) getting the first pick in the draft.

Lottery
Since we’re the Warriors, we’ll win the lottery and then John Wall will get hurt and miss most of the 2010-11 season. That’s one scenario. In the other scenario, we end up with the fourth pick or something like that. The latter is more likely, of course.

The Warriors usually do bad in the lottery
They usually get a low lottery pick, but this season should get us a Top 3 pick that we can use to improve the team (whether we use it to draft a player or trade it in a package since we already have a ton of young talented players).

Monta needs to get his team involved instead of shooting right away

That's on Nellie not making an adjustment
He tells Monta and Maggs and guys like Jack and Baron that there the guy and there the boos out there. A lack of a true offense affects that.
Rookie: "Why did you bench me?"
Nellie: "You're a rookie"
In fairness, according to Al Harrington, the W’s actually run more plays than the Knicks – it’s just that most of the time someone decides to shoot the ball a quarter of the way into the play. so it’s a 50-50 deal. Nellie’s fault for giving his players too much freedom. Players fault for having bad shot selection.
by homer simpson on Jan 30, 2010 12:41 AM PST up reply actions
It just doesn’t make sense to see Monta dribble the ball down court than launch a 3 within 5 seconds. Seriously either drive it in or take a better shot or pass
by GoldenSt8OfMind on Jan 30, 2010 8:27 AM PST up reply actions
Has anyone really been paying attention?
Ellis didn’t score until until I believe at least half way through the first quarter of the last few games. He hadn’t been taking very many shots and he was getting more players involved offensively. The problem those offensive players can’t do much offensively.
I love the complaint recently of Ellis not being a team player he’s averaged 8 assists the last five games and over the last six he’s averaging 7.83 assists. The problem hasn’t been Ellis not passing the ball or getting teammates involved.
It’s the execution of those plays. How many times can a player for the Warriors get a decent look and miss that shot. How many times can Don Nelson go away from getting Maggette to a spot on the floor offensively where he can attack the basket and get to the free throw line?
There’s a reason why the Warriors are losing and Ellis is not one of those reasons. None of his teammates are stepping up to get the Warriors a shot at winning some games.
There’s absolutely no defense still! The Warriors have to be the worst team when it comes to defending the three as well, they don’t rebound and unless Ellis grows another seven inches over night the Warriors will continue to struggle rebounding the ball.
Andris Biedrins has been terrible of late. Against the Bulls Biedrins looked like he was back with 9 points, 19 rebounds, and 8 blocks, but he has gotten nowhere near that since. Biedrins has regressed mightily from the free throw line and even Turiaf has regressed from there.
The only thing that has been a disappointment with Ellis is his free throw percentage he has to get it up. If he did he’d be scoring around 30 a night.

I don’t think those two paragraphs are compatible with each other. Every player on the team is a reason they can’t win because they don’t play well enough together to win games, especially on the defensive end.

i have know idea. i’m just saying that he’s been a surprisingly decent rebounder to this point – at least better than Martin.
and i think we both know that the only reason they are doing this is b/c Martin’s 20-days are up and they want to keep their guaranteed contracts in case it is needed for a trade needs to be made and they are too cheap to cut Hunter instead.
expect Tolliver to be gone soon too. for Kurz maybe? guy is shooting 45% from 3 in the D-League and at least has a history of hitting them in the NBA – albeit a small amount only 15 for 38 (40%) for the dubs last year.

Another Starting Center Matchup that Biedrins loses
Nazr Mohammed (16:33 min): 6 points, 10 rebounds (plus 6)
Andris Biedrins: (16:33 min): 4 points, 7 rebounds (minus 6)
For God’s sake, Biedrins, just be a top 15 starting center.

by Atma Brother ONE on Jan 30, 2010 12:58 AM PST up reply actions
There’s no shame in being outplayed by Nazr Mohammed this year… he’s actually having a bizarrely huge season, and is playing like one of the very best centers in the league right now. You’ll probably scoff at this, because he doesn’t play many minutes, but your scoffing won’t make it any less true.
That wasn’t the problem. The problem was that Nellie, as he has on so many other nights, thought that a great-rebounding rim-defending efficient-scoring center would be of no use to the third-worst team, most-outrebounded, second-worst-rim-defending team in basketball. If that math works for you too, God Bless. But frankly, Atma, you’re smarter than that.
Golden State Worriers: Angst & Analysis
My thinking and I could be wrong...
Nellie’s all about matchups, historically and today. Biedrins keeps losing his matchups (let’s not forget those 3 fouls in only 16minutes) to the opposing centers. Nellie’s thoughts are “I take out Biedrins, then Larry Brown won’t play Nazr Mohammed who is winning that matchup.”
Now I could be wrong, but I think their equal minutes last night reflect that. What if Biedrins played a full 32 minutes last night and fouled out? Well what it Mohammed played 32 minutes was on fire with 12 points and 20 rebounds and Coach Brown thought “this guy is on fire, let me ride him out” and then bam because he only had a 1 foul/ 16 minutes rate he plays more than Biedrins and slaughters the Warriors ever more than 12-20?
Instead of being an 11 point loss, it’s in the 20’s or 30’s and we hear nonstop pointless “Fire Nellie” whining.
I can’t say I have a problem with Nellie’s thinking there.
There’s no shame in being outplayed by Nazr Mohammed this year… he’s actually having a bizarrely huge season, and is playing like one of the very best centers in the league right now.
Shouldn’t Biedrins be in that category by now too? He’s the 2nd highest paid player on this team- and that’s looking like a huge mistake if he’s going to get outplayed every single night. For all Monta’s faults he’s at least winning some matchups.
Golden State of Mind :: Always keeping it... "Unstoppable Baby!" | SBNation.com
by Atma Brother ONE on Jan 30, 2010 8:34 AM PST up reply actions
There are three problems with this logic:
1) Mohammed, as effective as he’s been, hasn’t played 32 minutes in an NBA game in over two years… he’s too old and banged-up to put in that kind of time. If Nellie had kept Biedrins in, eventually Brown would’ve pulled Mohammed, and we would’ve had a big edge in the middle.
2) Your claim that Biedrins “keeps losing” his matchups is predicated largely on his small counting stats, which are predicted largely on his small number of minutes. Biedrins has not been outplayed every single night. When given the chances, he’s been more or less playing opposing centers to a draw — outplaying some, getting outplayed by others.
3) There’s a difference between shelving Andris Biedrins for a good basketball player and shelving him for Vladimir Radmanovic and Devean George. If a strategy requires you to play horrible players, and that strategy has been failing for over a year, don’t you think you might just shrug and let your starting center, the only guy on the roster who’s actually been a good NBA player in each of the last two years, stay out there for a little while?
Golden State Worriers: Angst & Analysis
In that little time he had 7 boards
That’s pretty darn good, and Nazr has been very solid this year. The fact our starting center, last years Mr.double double is getting this treatment from Nellie. You really gotta stop this center watch thing when a regular starter isn’t even playing 20 or more minutes. +/- has never been very reliable so I’d just leave that out but that’s just me. Also Nazr’s rebounding was probably helped to the fact that Maggs only had 3 rebounds who has been getting around 6 very consistently.
Rookie: "Why did you bench me?"
Nellie: "You're a rookie"
Looks like BIedrins was matched up against Mohammed. Radman had to play because Tolliver got into foul trouble. I felt the lack of Tolliver really hurt us with no more inside presence, especially in the 3rd qtr when Tolliver picked up #4 quickly.

Both shouldn't have gotten minutes
If Biedrins isn’t feeling well still not 100 percent put him on the bench and let him get to 100 percent because right now he’s playing as well as Vlad and that’s not saying much.

Thad Young is garbage: not a good rebounder, not a playmaker/passer, not an efficient scorer. Maggs and Buike are much better players (as will be whoever out of Turner/Johnson/Aminu falls to us, I suspect). I’d marginally prefer Young to Maggs because of his cheap contract, but then his cheap contract is what precisely what scuttles your proposed trade, since Philly wouldn’t be unloading enough salary. We’d probably have to take on Kapono or Lou Williams as well. Bleh.
On the other hand. Monta for Iggy straight up does make a lot of sense. Iggy’s not the electric scorer/finisher Monta is, but he’s longer, a better rebounder, better passer, better at D — in all, a much better complement to Curry. His ability to slide over to SF would also be pretty big plus in the event we luck into Wall. From Philly’s perspective, they get a guy who’s two years younger, with a bit more “star quality,” and a somewhat less onerous contract (5/$55M, as opposed to Iggy’s escalating 5/$68). They also suck, so like us, might be interested in making a move just to shake things up a bit.
