Let's Do Curry A Favor

Stephen Curry is having a decent rookie season when you look at his numbers. But if you have actually been watching the games you might see a player who can't stay in front of his man and makes mistakes that are not being corrected. Stephen is at a point where he would benefit from coming off of the bench as opposed to playing through his mistakes. The Warriors envision Curry as their point guard of the future but right now the job has proven too much for him to handle. Over the past few gams his confidence has clearly taken some hits and his play has been noticeably less aggressive since the start of the season. Especially at the defensive end.

Typically I am not in favor of benching rookies but Curry is in danger of entering the same place that Mike Dunleavy Jr. was in when he was with the Warriors. A place where night in and night out he is overmatched with the best athletes in the world and his lack of physical ability starts to play on his mind. Stephen is a shooter, no one is denying that. The dubs need to use him as such.

If he came off the bench as a scorer he would greatly benefit. Right now the task of running a team and guarding the other teams 1st or second best player is proving to be too much for him. One encouraging thing about Curry's performances is that his shooting hasn't really declined. His performance against Milwaukee was forgotten because of Jennings' 55 points, but he came off the bench and scored 14 points on 6 of 9 shooting in the same game. His numbers are actually down when the W's win. In 9 victories Curry is averaging 25 minutes per. In 23 losses he's averaging 34 minutes.

Tonight the W's play the Denver Nuggets who are without Chauncey Billups and Carmelo Anthony. Curry will most likely be matched up with fellow rookie Ty Lawson, Curry should at least come out even in this matchup. Lawson is far more athletic, but they both played in college for the same amount of time and tonight is an opportunity for Steph to prove that he belongs in the starting lineup, especially against a fellow rookie. Afterall, Lawson was the one picked 18th overall not 7th.

Everyone hopes Curry becomes the next Steve Nash but lets not forget that Nash learned from the bench as well as the starting lineup for the early part of his career. He also had the luxury of Jason Kidd and Kevin Johnson's brains to pick from, whereas Curry has no such luxury. The dubs have not put him in a position to succeed very often this season, as evidenced by his constantly shooting off the dribble and never coming around or off of screens. In college he proved that he was very adept at performing the latter. Perhaps he would benefit from watching the flow of the game at the start and then he would be better prepared to pick his spots while out on the floor. He would also be able to see what is working for the opposing team's PG and what is not. We new Curry would not be able to defend NBA athletes early on, and that he would have trouble adjusting to playing the point full time. So lets allow him to focus on one thing at a time for right now, shooting. He's good at it.

Keep him in!

This would make sense if we were in the midst of a playoff push and had someone better to play in front of Curry, but the way the chips have fallen this season, it is better to give our young guys as much time on the court to develop and learn so they are more prepared for the following season.
I’m sure he could get his minutes off the bench, but it is probably a bigger vote of confidence that he continues to be the starting point guard.

Good Topic

I’m personally on the fence whether to keep him starting or coming off the bench. His shots look good and he gets plenty of open looks, but for whatever reason his shot is not falling, so maybe he would benefit from coming off the bench….
But the what if it doesn’t, what if he gets put on the bench and continues to struggle? That could possibly be worse. I think Nelly is currently doing the right thing, keeping him in shows Nelly’s confidence in him.
Side Note: Dunleavy sucked in our eyes because he got taken so high we had unrealistic expectations. Then the Warriors kept trying to make him into more than he was capable, very different situation than Curry.

No Way

Curry needs to be the starting PG alongside Monta. They need to develop chemistry and Curry needs to improve his game accordingly. That’s our backcourt of the future.

He's fine right now, we just suck

It’s up to Curry and Nellie to figure out how he is doing mentally and emotionally. If he can stay healthy mentally and play max minutes then he should so he can continue to learn fast.

Keep him in

I don’t see Curry developing any bad habits. I just see him making some rookie mistakes. These are mistakes he should play through. On the defensive end, I actually think he’s doing a fine job. Sure he gets burned here and there, but that’s about familiarity and experience. Not bad habits. CJ Watson has a bad habit of trying to go for a steal to make up for his poor on-ball defense. At least Curry is trying to do the right things.

i think nelson needs to do a better job staggering his and monta's minutes...

ideally…. we can scale monta back to 40. (perhaps 4 minutes each half on bench), Curry can play about 32, 8 of those minutes without monta, so together they r on the floor for 24 minutes….

Curry will never be Nash the better comparison is

Mike Bibby.Thats who Steph’s game reminds me of the most.Steve Nash has natural agility that Steph will never have.Dont mean he cant be a allstar 1 day just means he wont be nash.

Curry is nowhere near Nash

But I certainly think he can be as good as Nash. He has all the skills and the basketball IQ and unselfish attitude. Nash is super tricky and creative with the ball but If Curry continues to grow then I can definitely see the Steve Nash in him. let’s not forget Steve Nash’s career blossomed late and when put in the perfect environment. Curry is still a baby.

Are you Crazy?

Curry was finally able to play to the end tonight in Denver. Look at what he did. 26pts, 5 rebs, 6 assists, 4 steals, and only 2 turnovers. oh and 6-6 behind the arc. I think he’s gaining confidence each minute he plays. Don’t judge a first year on Jan. 5th of his rookie season. Get with it homies!

oops 3 steals...

still, that’s pretty good.

only thing is Nash....

never learned how to play defense

by Kid Curry on Jan 6, 2010 8:17 AM PST reply actions

I don't understand

The kid’s shooting 45% from the field and 43% on 3s, and we want to bench him because he’s not shooting well??

I understand his defense is lacking, but coming off the bench isn’t gonna teach him how to slide his feet

by bradyk2 on Jan 6, 2010 10:25 AM PST reply actions

Yup

He just has some bad turnovers but hey he’s a rookie. Start him the whole year

Hey

isn’t this that guy who said we should trade for JJ Redick and Brandon Bass?

by Reverend_Randy on Jan 6, 2010 8:08 PM PST reply actions

yes it is

which is why i didnt read anything in the entire post. I knew that it would be ridiculous

Curry is legit

I think its crazy how many people think Curry shouldn’t start. He’s legit. He makes rookie mistakes and needs to cut down on turnovers but he is legit. He has a shot and a left hand that a lot of veteran point guards have yet to develop.

Most of the responses have been in Curry’s favor but I actually hear this a lot. And I hear people constantly pushing for playing time from AR yet I hear people saying bench Curry. That’s very backwards in my humbled opinion.

I think Curry's defense is pretty good

Once he learns how to cut down on the fouls I think he will be alright. He actually does a great job of moving his feet on the perimeter. Nice lateral movement. Better than a lot of Warriors players past and present.

Maybe it was a bit of a stretch for Curry at 7, but Curry is our best option for running our offense. He just needs to work on his foul troubles.

by Badly Browned on Jan 8, 2010 3:50 PM PST reply actions

Curry a steal.

I think most would agree Curry was a steal at 7. Maybe the third best so far. Not including Blake because of injury. Not too flashy but he got game. Please no more one handed passes though.
