Keith Smart
On Tonight's Game:
"We looked at some numbers with us starting off the games and we kind of got ourselves in a little bit of a hole, and yet we managed to keep the quarters close. I think when we can do that it keeps the game close because we’ve got a good little thing going where we play well after halftime. Hopefully it doesn’t come down to that all the time, but I think we built off of something. Our guys came out for this one and played hard and managed to get ourselves a nice little win. We got a chance to play multiple guys in the preseason games… in a game that you have some type of control over and I think we had some control over this game."

On Andris Biedrins:
"That’s what he needs to be - rebounding the basketball, playing care free, with the ultimate of goal of just rebounding. I thought early in the preseason he kind of deferred a little bit. David (Lee) is going to go to the glass…that’s one thing he’s going to do. And he does that very well. And I shared with him that he has to bypass that. He’s got to get to the glass also because if we can get both of those guys rebounding at that rate we’re at right now in the regular season, that is going to help us overall with ‘One shot, done’. I felt like he was back to his old self tonight."

On Rodney Carney:
"He’s going to get better, once he understands how we want him to play and the role we want him in. I don’t want him to settle for just shooting a lot of jump shots because he has more to his game to offer. Putting it on the floor, drawing fouls, getting to the rim, and getting us closer to the bonus…things like that. And what he brings on the other side from a defensive standpoint with his long arms, he can get us in transition but also play against bigger guards so we can take some of our smaller guards off the court."
David Lee
On Tonight's Game:
"The whole goal from day one has been to get a good rapport with the guys and be a leader, lead by example by how hard I play on the floor. I think we just have a to win more and we still have some more fine tuning to do, but we have some horses to do some great things."
Stephen Curry
On Tonight's Game:
"Offensively I thought we did alright, we just missed some shots, but in the third quarter we started to click and rolled on from there. Defensively we were still there. You have to take each game in the preseason seriously. We have to continue to get better, but we are looking forward to Wednesday [October 27] when it really counts. We’re ready for the start."
Rodney Carney
On Not Just Being A Shooter:
"Calbert Cheaney and I have been working on my post play, facing the guy up, shooting the jumper and going to the hole. I have shown that. I do have other aspects of my game which you guys saw tonight, so hopefully I will be able to do it throughout the season."

On How Coach Smart uses him:
"I am trying to feel my way into the rotation. First game I shot a couple of threes and drove to the hole a bit. Now when we don’t have Coach Smart is not putting me in a position to do things that I can’t do. So I am comfortable out there and appreciate him for considering me for it."

When regular season hits

We only dress 12 right? Obviously Amundson and Udoh will be on of those, assuming we keep Adrien, whose the odd man out?

Tough poll choices!

Went with Lin detector. Did like adjustments; don’t know if they’d work in real games. Lakers yellow is disconcerting; least it’s minus the purple.

Solid game tonight

Far more impressive to watch than blowing out the Clips, imo. Team defense looked very good. Reggie didn’t play, of course, so we got to see part 2 of “what happens when you lose your 3rd guard?”. And with Amundson out, the continuing story of “what happens when you lose your 3rd big?” continues its’ run. It appears that the answer to “who’s your backup wing?” is Carney, but it’s early yet.

I saw nothing tonight to even mildly suggest, let alone persuade me, that our second five should not be Reggie, bWright, Adrien, Carney, and Lin right now. That’s my short answer, of course. :)

Some of the win tonight was home court, but a lot of it was the player rotation. And some of it was that this is what happens when Andris Biedrins gets really involved. We do not have a problem at center. And yes, if Vlad doesn’t perform, Vlad won’t play. At least tonight.

Lots more to say about this game – I owe a full fanpost.

I loved the plays between Lee and Biedrens!

Didn’t get to go to the game, but it makes me (almost unreasonably) happy to see Beans and Lee down there on the block. Fighting for boards, dishing, finishing

Also, although I’m a little nervous about somebody getting hurt in the final preseason game, I am pumped to see the Dubs on TV on friday night!!!

Also Rasputin, you do owe us a post; I’m interested to hear a full breakdown from somebody who was at the game

The yellow on the court when seen in person doesn’t look as bright as it does in 2k11.

Right on Time

Andris stepped up and seemed to play a very good game. Impressive rebounding numbers, flowing to the basket and making himself available to catch and finish. The Portland “bigs” also did not get it going offensively, and we were markedly better with Andris on the court. I was starting to get pretty anxious about him, but this game actually assuaged some fears. If we get those kind of numbers out of our starting frontcourt on a nightly basis, we will be in excellent shape.

Monta also played a very good game. Tim and Jim were talking about how he was playing with a “quiet confidence,” and the boxscore reflects that. Excellent defensive job on Roy again as well.

Carney and Adrien are giving me a lot of confidence as well. Adrien played very well in the eight minutes he saw, and I hope Smart is thinking of giving him that much time on a nightly basis. Carney got to the line and put pressure on the Blazers by driving to the basket. His main contribution was on defense, however, and it is pretty clear to me that our two best defenders are both wings. A welcome development given our matador defense over the last several seasons.

Love the way minutes were distributed between Vlad and Bwright tonight. Vlad played miserably, didn’t rebound, and was thus yanked. Bwright played well, and continued to build on some recent success, and was rewarded with more minutes. After dealing with Nellie’s scattershot method of alloting playing time, it must be comforting to the players to see that if they do what Smart tells them to do, they will play, and if not they will sit.

Curry’s turnovers and shooting woes continue to be a problem, but if he is our biggest concern, I will feel pretty good. I have a lot of confidence that he will find his rythym with his teamates, and find his range on jumpers.

Good thoughts. One note:

I have a lot of confidence that [Curry will…] find his range on jumpers.

Given that his TS% through five preseason games is .615, I’m not sure it was ever lost.

The turnovers are definitely worrisome. I haven’t watched enough of the games to say for sure, but I’d guess he’s trying too often to be cute rather than safe. Or it could be a small sample size error. I think he has the hoops IQ and court vision to be a 2:1 AST/TO guy. Whether he can ever approach the 3:1 ratio of elite PGs like Nash, Paul or Deron remains a question.

On Biedrins: I agree with you (and Smart) that this seemed like something of a breakthrough game. Without having watched the game, I wonder if he wasn’t in large part responsible for the Portland bigs’ inability to get it going. Certainly seems more plausible than giving the credit to Lee. Yes, the Blazers were without Camby, Oden, and Przybilla, but it’s still encouraging to see Biedrins/Lee absolutely dominate to the degree they did. AB had 11 boards in 25 minutes; Lee had 12 in 33. Between them, 29 points (on 20 fga), 4 assists, 3 steals, 2 turnovers. AB was a +22, Lee a +21. That’s the type of 4-5 production on which winning teams are built.

There will be no extra point!

by Sleepy Freud on Oct 19, 2010 8:52 AM PDT up reply actions

I think there is a little bit of synergy going on here too

Beans and Lee are both tall, quick, and athletic. Sure you might be able to out-muscle them, but with both of them defending the paint, I feel like we are going to actually be pretty tough inside

That’s what I’m hoping. At this stage of his career, in a meaningless game, there is something to be said for pushing the envelope rather than playing it safe. It’s obviously not a situation like Randolph where the mistakes seem mostly due to cluelessness. He’s a smart kid; I suspect as his career progresses he’ll get a better and better sense of the line between the smart play and the unnecessarily cute one.

There will be no extra point!

Tim Roye did mention that he was dribbling too high last night, and he had at least 3 turnovers in the open court. If he can cut those out, a couple of overly aggressive passes won’t bother me.

Why are we playing started 30+ minutes

(minus Biedrins) and other teams are going 20-25? Really misleading

by tafkasam on Oct 19, 2010 8:46 AM PDT reply actions

It is mainly Monta and Steph. It’s looking like Smart wants one on the court at all times. Not having Reggie probably exacerbates that a little bit, though, as he can be the primary ball handler for the backup unit.

Pre-season means nothing...

…in any sport! It’s fun to get a sneak preview of your team but you can lose every game or go undefeated in the preseason but until the games actually matter, the players don’t play as hard. Regarding the yellow court, I’m still on the fence about it. It’s a little too bright but maybe we’ll get used to it. Then again, I’ve only seen it on 2K11 so I guess that’s not a good source.
