Keith Smart
On Playing Monta Ellis 44 Minutes:
"I wanted to play him a lot of minutes tonight. We have a day off before we start playing again. Some nights you’re going to have to try and play because your close in a game to win it, you got to make sure these guys can play 45 minutes being fatigued and this is all part of the training camp."
Monta Ellis
On Tonight's Game:
"It was good. I mean we could have made some more plays but it happens like that some times. I think we played great, excellent on the road. Phoenix has been a great team, they made shots at the end and we can’t do nothing about it, we gave it our all, left it all on the court and did everything coach asked us to do."

On Changes To The Team:
"We have two different teams and that’s from the coaches down to the players. We got new coaches and we got new players. So, we got players who like to play defense, who can play defense and that’s our main goal: that’s playing defense because we can score on the other end we just got to stop people on this end."
Stephen Curry
On The Team's Poor Shooting:
"Very uncharacteristic for us to shoot the ball that poorly, but I think our defense is so much improved that we’re still in the game to win at the end. Some guys were very off tonight and we had a couple foul-trouble issues, but we were right there at the end to almost get the win on the road so you got to like where you’re at right now."

On Coming Back In The Second Half:
"I think we really found some things that we liked in the second half to get our offense back going and we played pretty good defense down the stretch and we out-rebounded them, which we haven’t done in a while. Even though it’s a loss you got to like where we are at."

Notes

- Reggie Williams DNP again on the groin injury. Current injury list: Reggie - groin, Amundson - finger, Udoh - wrist.
- No change in training camp invitees or that 15th spot. Aaron Miles and Jeff Adrien are still playing well enough to hang around.

Why did Monta play 44 minutes? This is a preseason game, he should have been playing the mid 20’s like Lee and Curry.

by DubsFan408 on Oct 19, 2010 10:32 PM PDT reply actions

The only thing I can think of is that Smart wanted to give him an extended look with the back-ups

If Smart is still trying to figure out who he wants to run the point when Curry is out maybe he decided to let Ellis get more time on the court with the reserves to see how they work together while still wanting to give Ellis his normal work with the starters so they can continue to gel.

by OkayJay81 on Oct 19, 2010 10:49 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, that's definitely possible

It could also be that the other guards on the roster (Bell, Miles) couldn’t do anything against the Suns defense while they were in, forcing Smart to rely on Monta.

by IQofaWarrior on Oct 19, 2010 10:58 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah but it’s still preseason. Monta is probably going to play heavy minutes again, so we should have rested him.

by DubsFan408 on Oct 19, 2010 11:03 PM PDT up reply actions

Keith Smart was asked that question

I’m not entirely sure what to make of his answer. We do have 4 or 5 days between the end of preseason and the start of the regular season to rest guys before the 82 game grind. Even still, Smart’s answer doesn’t explain why he played ONLY Monta that many minutes. Right now, my hunch is still that Smart felt he had no other guard to go to tonight, especially with Reggie out.

by IQofaWarrior on Oct 19, 2010 11:06 PM PDT up reply actions

In the long run it really doesn't mean anything

giving him 10 more minutes of rest has basically zero effect on how worn out he’ll be this year. As long as this doesn’t become a regular occurrence things will be fine. I think it’s more odd than concerning.

by OkayJay81 on Oct 19, 2010 11:06 PM PDT up reply actions

Whoops

forgot to mention that his answer is in the postgame quotes

by IQofaWarrior on Oct 19, 2010 11:07 PM PDT up reply actions

If that was true, it might have made sense

but Miles was far from the worst contributor on the floor tonight, and he did pick up 5 boards in his minutes. A better question is why play Monta 43 minutes and NOT play Carney more than 5, or Lin at all? Why play Vlad as first big and Bell at 1st small when you know they won’t help? Vlad did ok at the end of the game, but that was after doing almost literally nothing for the majority of his minutes. Why play Gadz at all?

Because it was a preseason back to back, mebbe in part. But that doesn’t explain playing Ellis that long. It’s not smart at all.

Smart's weakness appears to be his rotations.

And his strengths are motivating players, and getting good effort out of them. I’m kinda mixed.

by GovernorStephCurry on Oct 19, 2010 11:18 PM PDT up reply actions

I still think it's too early to judge his rotations

In the pre-season the team has a number of different goals besides simply winning the game, so it’s hard to judge the substitution decisions when we don’t know all the reasons behind them.

by OkayJay81 on Oct 19, 2010 11:21 PM PDT up reply actions

on the plus side

Ellis, Curry, Brandan, and Adrien could have survived Vlad tonight and won if either Ellis or Curry had hit a shot at the end. I can’t blame any of the subs for this one, even though some of them didn’t do that well.

Adrien’s rebound rate came down a bit, but still spectacular. And his shooting is now closer to sustainable, too.

Well

without video footage, or more importantly, recorded video footage so we can rewind and analyze what happened, we’ll never know for sure. However, it’s possible that Radman contributed in ways that don’t show up on the box score. Last season, even though he wasn’t hitting his shots, I felt he was pretty smart about moving around on the defensive end. It could be that Smart used Radman to fill in defensive holes caused by the opposing offense moving around.

I don’t think Smart is stupid. He must have a reason for playing Radman so many minutes. He must have a reason for playing Carney 6 minutes. He must have a reason for playing Monta 44 minutes and Biedrins 16 minutes. The problem is, we don’t have any idea what they are. But just because we don’t know why doesn’t mean a good reason doesn’t exist.

And if we’re going to be fair, we should criticize Doc Rivers for playing Rondo 40 min, Allen 39 min, and Pierce 37 min in a preseason road win against the Knicks last week, instead of “letting his bench play”.

don't trust what the coach says in public

he feels obligated to project certainty and authority. His ambition is to survive the ‘interim’ label, but the only experience he has in building a winning team is two of Nelson’s years, a model he obviously can’t apply. He saw an opportunity for a road win. There will be plenty of improvisation ahead, but he can’t come out and admit he hasn’t really figured things out, and he might not be as confident as he presents on the surface.

That’s a cynical viewpoint, but I agree that playing Monta 44 minutes doesn’t make any kind of sense. We already know he is capable of playing that minutes for nearly an entire season…

Taking a quick look at the play-by-play

one reason that Radman might have played so much tonight is because he was assigned guard Channing Frye, a 3 pt shooting center. I think Radman is mobile enough to guard Frye around the perimeter.

by IQofaWarrior on Oct 19, 2010 11:57 PM PDT up reply actions

not a chance

Let me put it to you this way. A recent WP48 study identified 48 players who had generated 0 wins for their teams over the last full 3 seasons. Generally, these are players who make you worse to the point you lose more the more they play. We have two of them. We have a third player who was in that category last year.

Combined, we are paying them over $15 million dollars this year. They have far moe value to us if they never, ever set foot on the court.

Why did Monta play 44 minutes?

maybe wanted to evaluate him to see if he makes the cut?

Side note: Anyone know if this Jeff Adrien guy will be on our roster? The rook seems like he can bring in a lot of what we need in the front court especially with Udoh and Amundson out.

No news as of right now

Looks like Larry Riley is stretching Miles and Adrien to the end of preseason before making the sign or cut decision.

by IQofaWarrior on Oct 19, 2010 11:09 PM PDT up reply actions

The team hasn't made a decision yet

but you have to think the Amundson injury makes it that much more likely that Adrien gets the job.

by OkayJay81 on Oct 19, 2010 11:09 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, I think this makes sense

It could also be that Riley is waiting for an “official” injury recovery timetable on Amundsen so he can factor that into the decision to sign Adrien.

by IQofaWarrior on Oct 19, 2010 11:11 PM PDT up reply actions

or that he's waiting for the preseason to end with Adrien healthy

Brandan Wright looks good

Maybe a little tough love from Smart and some good play from Vlad was what BWright needed – he had a nice stat line and if he can put up #s like that consistently backing up Lee then we are definitely set at the 4 spot. Good for him!
I’m worried about the 5 spot though – with Udoh and Lou down and Beans likely to be pretty inconsistent, we may need Lee to play center more than we want.
Monta looks great – nice to see his play backing up all his positive talk so far.
Curry needs to be more assertive though – hopefully when the season starts he gets it going like we know he can.

by tjmax on Oct 20, 2010 7:56 AM PDT reply actions

Perhaps when Lee’s defense is too much of a liability, Wright can come in and do something on that end. With his shot blocking ability and length, he should be able to do some things on defense as well as offense.

The Golden Glow is the only way to reach the upper level.

by Naticus on Oct 20, 2010 12:28 PM PDT up reply actions

I’d like Brandan subbing for Dre, and Adrien subbing for Lee. Style-wise and body-wise, that makes the most sense to me. It puts Lee at “center” more than we’d like, but otherwise it works out.

Just looking at the boxscore, this looks like my worst nightmares realized. Monta plays 44 minutes and shoots 28 times? David Lee goes 1-11? Vlad gets extended burn? I don’t get it.

BWright put up some nice solid numbers again though, that’s good to see.

Oh, and they better sign Adrien. Dude has done basically everything right as far as I can tell.

How long does it take a player to recover from a dislocated finger ?

Warriors have Gadzuric, Radman, and BWright to make up for the absence of Amundson. Adrien was signed because he played hard and fought for his spot in preseason. And he deserves it.
