``We still have to master not turning the ball over, but as long as we keep playing defense, I think we'll be all right. We're doing a lot of things I like on defense. I like where we are.''
Monta Ellis
On Playing 53 Minutes:
``It's no problem, because it's what I train for. Playing that much is nothing unusual. Games take less energy than practices. It's only the preseason, too. The regular season is when it really matters how much you play.''

AFter reading that Steinmetz article

It looks like Smart’s decision was to play Monta and Reggie a butt ton of minutes. Not liking this back court situation much at all…

I think they're the only 2 players Smart can trust

to execute plays against the Lakers defenders. I’ll have to rewind and rewatch to see what Charlie Bell and Jeremy Lin did in the few minutes they were on the floor. But I have a feeling it wasn’t much.

We out rebounded the Lakers by 10+

And shot a better FG%.

If Curry was healthy and we didn’t run Monta into the ground, we probably have this game.

aside from everything, the warriors did well.

but i’m a tad bit confuse. last season, we were one of the worse rebounding team (if not the worse) and we still lost a lot of games. this preseason, we pretty much out rebound the other team, and still isn’t a .5 team. (given that of the games, twice we play the lakers in around LA) so what is our problem? and we really much suck on road games. really.

so would it be the lack of the three point shooting?
post offensive (is that correct wording?)
too many turnover (congrates curry, monta is in your league now!)
too many road games at the beginning of the season (obviously the league love us so much that aside from having tons of lakers game. [do the owners really care about revenue over wins?]
or is the questionable foul calls?

really, what is it?

or perhaps, maybe we really just suck?

please god, be nice to me. um. LGW…still.

A good chunk of it is Vlad, Gadz, and Bell

Seriously, Vlad cost us the game tonight – it wasn’t just ESPN being snarky. I wa really really hoping I would be able to say something positive about any of those three tonight. Sadly, after Rad got torched for 9 points in 90 seconds to tie the game……

just to make it clear

Rad scored 8 points and gave up 9 right there. He had 2 steals and 2 assists – and 4 turnovers. He was 3 for 10 from the floor.

I hear what you are saying but vlad’s defense was pretty solid for about 3 quarters. i think he just got too many minutes. He gives us good size when he plays SF. I would appreciate it though if he never took a shot.

Brown at SF had 18 on 6/9 in 26 minutes – Vlad played 30. ……. we absolutely lost the game at wing.

Brown has looked good to me in the preseason so far. It looks like he actually has a jumper now. He’s going to be VERY good if he can hit that consistantly. He’s already good on defense because of his size, quickness and strength. I hope the warriors make a pitch for him this summer. i don’t like him at SF but as a good rotation guard.

Monta ran out of gas

He destroyed the Lakers for three quarters but went 1 for 10 down the stretch. He kept getting front iron on his shots showing was flat spent.

by jtrosa on Oct 23, 2010 8:30 AM PDT up reply actions

He was looking like the bad Monta in the 4th.

Plus there wasnt a lot of passing going on especially from Monta. With Curry out the bad Monta seems to be rearing its head up.

by Only In Fairfax on Oct 23, 2010 10:38 AM PDT up reply actions

Que?

With Curry out, Monta kept us in the game. His FG% was incredible to start. LIke Jtrosa said, Monta was gassed by the fourth. It’s no like he was bad Monta all game — just down the stretch, which is understandable. We literally had nothing else going offensively.

It’s crazy to think a guy can play at that level for the entire game. Here again, much like last year, he played too many minutes and leads me to believe that was the major cause of his decreased efficiency. I give hime credit for playing his heart out but we are asking too much of him.

by cybermaldonado on Oct 22, 2010 11:15 PM PDT up reply actions

I think Smart is sending a message to Riley that he needs another point guard

It looks like for all the good moves Riley did to address the Warriors size and rebounding issues that he failed to bring in a point guard to back up Curry. I think Riley was planning on bringing back CJ but once he got the big offer from the Bulls, Riley failed to bring in someone else to take his spot. (I believe it was Lacob who said number 1 problem with Warriors has been a lack of a plan). An Earl Watson would have been nice or if somehow he can get TJ Ford out of Indiana that would be great.

It looks like Smart believes he has two guys who can play the point Curry and Ellis. Curry couldn’t go so Ellis played the entire game.

I have no idea why you’re talking about Radman. This thread is talking about Monta playing the entire 53 minutes. What does Radman blowing a 9-pt lead have anything to do with Monta playing the whole game and us not having a reliable backup point guard to fill in for Curry?

by IQofaWarrior on Oct 23, 2010 12:20 PM PDT up reply actions

If Rad doesn't blow it

We don’t play overtime. Rad was subbed in for Lin who was net zero on his 2 minutes and had our only point, and had made fewer errors in that time than Adrien. Lin’s issue isn’t his performance, it’s that Smart doesn’t trust him.

 Got it?

by tandy on Oct 23, 2010 1:27 PM PDT up reply actions

if you go by +/-, yes. If you go to the play by play and look at actual contributions and when they occur – which I do – at worst he nets 0 pesonally on that time, and was the only Warrior to score while he was on the court. I like Adrien, but he was a direct minus on a lane violation, taking away Lin’s second point (he did make the ft).

Let’s try it this way – if Lin’s preseason WP48 was 1/3 as good as it is, he’d still look like a very good point guard statistically. I think that’s more realistic. But nothing on the court has shown that he can’t play backup point quite adequately.

by Skeptic con Urquell on Oct 23, 2010 3:22 PM PDT up reply actions

So if somehow we win the game

Monta would still have played all 48 minutes. So the issue of needing a backup point guard to fill in for Curry instead of Monta still exists. I still don’t understand what Radman has to do with Monta playing the entire game, whether it be 48 min or 53 min. That is, unless you’re implying that Jeremy Lin should be our backup point guard.

by IQofaWarrior on Oct 23, 2010 2:06 PM PDT up reply actions

If BWright doesn't blow a WIDE OPEN DUNK

We dont go to overtime.

When Lin was in the game, the backcourt was Monta-Lin with Reggie at SF. Lin was subbed out for Radman when Lin had an unforced TO to the Lakers. After the sub, Reggie moved back to SG alongside Monta and Radman went to SF.

by Badly Browned on Oct 23, 2010 3:28 PM PDT up reply actions

not unforced - steal by Blake

And where we were burned for the loss was at wing, directly over Radman. I’m not saying other players didn’t make mistakes, because they clearly did. But in that minute, it was

Radman travel
Radman foul -2 to Bryant
Radman blocked
Radman rebound
Radman turnover -2 to Bryant
Ellis miss
Brown hits 3 over Radman on switch

Blaming any other player at the end for the loss is blaming them for not being able to make up for Radman.

Lin was passed the ball and it basically bounced off his hands into the the Lakers

Blake got credited a steal, but it was unforced. It was also why Smart subbed him out immediately after that TO.

Unfortunately we have Gad and Bell who are taking up 2 roster spots and it appears as if they are worthless on the court.

I’d still prefer to keep Adrien. He looked really good in the preseason and and back up PG we get will be rubbish. We can’t afford a good one and Aaron miles is terrible.

by Balance on Oct 23, 2010 12:27 PM PDT up reply actions

Yep, but, they're not worthless in the accounting books

I would think that Riley has plans to trade their expiring contracts for reliable bench players, and that may include a reliable backup point guard. Or Riley might just let them expire and spend the money and the 2 roster spots next summer on free agents.

Whichever way Riley goes, we’ll have to suffer with Gadz and Radman on the bench for only this season.

Our problem tonight was lack of 3s

not 3-pt shooters, but people who can actually play that position. As in Vlad is our 3rd string player and should be fourth on the rotation, with RW ahead of him if he has minutes available. We didn’t lose the game at guard – RW and Monta killed it. We did kinda lose it at the bigs, but not too badly. We were destroyed on the wing.

by Rasputin10 on Oct 23, 2010 12:51 AM PDT reply actions

Yeah, for the most part

But a bigger part is that Smart appears to trust Vlad and Bell more than Lin. Vlad had had a good game for him to the point he collapsed, so in many ways I can’t blame Smart. Or I couldn’t if it wasn’t a consistent Vlad pattern – he did it twice in 8 preseason games. Personally, I would have left RW at the 3 and brought in Dre for Adrien first.

A great deal of Smart’s success will come from how well he can keep Vlad, Gad, and Bell off the floor. we’ll see if he can figure that out.

Baseball is a chamber orchestra. Football is a marching band. Basketball is a modern quintet. jazz, rock, hiphop, pop/ all about the beat./ still my revolution not/ til you dance through it.

by Rasputin10 on Oct 23, 2010 1:24 AM PDT up reply actions

With everyone healthy none of those guys should figure into the 9 man rotation anyways.

Dorell and Carney out meant we had Vlad and BWright play the 3 for us.

Curry out means we only have Monta and Reggie left as real quality backcourt players. Bell can play some defense, but hasn’t really brought much else. Lin is still a WIP, he was taking out because of his unforced turnover after all. However, Smart should have tweaked his rotations to get both Bell and LIn more playing time, so that Monta would not have been dead tired to close out the game.

Yes we have injured players right now, but our bench situation, especially in the backcourt, ain’t to thrilling.

It seems pretty clear to me

that Smart is trying to bring Lin along slowly. Don’t want him to get rattled. Nobody really cares if Radman loses his confidence. Might be a good thing the way he keeps jacking up the bricks from downtown. You could see Kobe getting in his head about it during the lineup for that one free throw.

Also, the announcers were talking about how Radman is a great practice shooter, but it just isn’t translating into the games.

A couple comments;

I think Jeff Adrien made the team. I dont have any smart reasoning behind it and im not even sure im confident about it. I wouldnt call it a gut feeling because that bs but im telling you hes got it.
Also Monta should handle the rock more often – play the one more often and curry play the 2 mas often. It should be split a little closer to 50 50. I like Curry better at the 1 but i see the benefits of having Monta there and i see the benefits of having Steph at the 2. Benefits that would benefit the team..in a good way. I said it. Its been said.

Guarding Kobe? That’s crazy. lol Did he get owned or what? I would think those long arms would help some at least.

No surprise there. No way he has the lateral movement, much less the experience to handle a guy like Kobe.

BWright on Kobe

Smacked of a failed experiment to me, but if he had played up closer on him instead of laying back against the drive, it might have been interesting. I wonder if we will see Smart trot Brandon out as a perimeter defender again…

Have the rains let up yet?

BWright on Kobe

Smacked more of having Dorell and Carney injured and Vlad again as our starting SF.

It was painfully obvious in the 4th and in OT that

we’re still missing a CLOSER. The player that handles the ball at the end of games and makes things happen. It’s clear that Monta is NOT our closer…

I do not feel that he should be run out like that but also worried that he doesnt recognize it and at least start creating for other players when he is gassed.

by Only In Fairfax on Oct 23, 2010 10:48 AM PDT up reply actions

Monta is very much a closer

When he only has 36 minutes of PT under his belt.

He was, understandably, completely gassed by the 4th quarter. You can see it in the pts per quarter.

I dunno about that

my impression of him last year is that he would have a lot of costly turnovers and bad shots at the end of games.

The team totals on rebounding was a nice chance of pace. Offensive boards too.

Everyone is blaming Vlad, despite he actually had a decent game until the last 2 minutes.

Anyone else notice how we completely collapsed from the moment Biedrins fouled out? With Beans in, we fought from 87-85 lead to a 98-89 lead when Beans fouled out with less than 2 minutes to go. We all know what happened after that.

Sure hope Udoh and Amundson get better soon.

Just to clarify

Beans checked in for BWright when the game was 87-85 with about 7 minutes to go.

by Badly Browned on Oct 23, 2010 11:09 AM PDT up reply actions

3-10 and 1-4 on threes….. right around his averages for preseason, which are .333 and .240. And I’m not sure where you saw the decent defense – he had more boards than usual. But this is Rad’s pattern….. he does, directly, lose you games.

Radman absolutely had decent defense last night

Kobe absolutely destroyed BWright last night, he has less success on Radman.

Radman gave up points in quick succession in the 4th Qtr yes, but to say his game before that was garbage, at least when compared to what he has down in preseason up to this point, is narrow minded.

oh, his game before that was by far the best he’s had in the preseason – I said so at the half. And no, Brandan can’t guard Kobe either.

Ok sure

Let’s forget how integral Bean had been in the game, and to get fouled out. Let’s forget that BWright, in which not only did the team play worse overall when he was in, also missed the wide open potential game clinching basket. Let’s also forget that Smart worked Monta into the ground, and while he came off to a hot start, smacked of mid-2009 season form in the 4th Qtr.

Radman is not good yes, but to solely blame him for this loss is dumb.

Monta and Reggie's scoring

is the main reason this was a game at all. Along with Lee and Beidrins’ boards.

by Jeremy Belvins on Oct 23, 2010 3:51 PM PDT up reply actions

definitely

Even with his fourth quarter, Monta had a fantastic game – so did Reggie. I expected us to really suck when I saw the DNP list, but got very pleasantly surprised. We play very pretty ball when we’re clicking – even without Steph. That’s hella encouraging.

i think the guards were to be blamed for the loss

apparently they let the 3 pointer shooters opened. do we really need to help the F?

would that be conisdered failed assignment?

by Shells on Oct 23, 2010 2:47 PM PDT up reply actions

For all the talk about length and being long, Brandon Wright gets shots busted in his face on the regular, even D Fisher hit a jumper point blank range in B Wrights face, what’s length if he never uses it to affect the game…He’s a liability on the perimeter and gaurding the post…He’s getting too old to make these same mistakes

by Brothaplease09 on Oct 23, 2010 11:11 AM PDT reply actions

I think the problem with BWright at the perimeter

is that he doesn’t have any speed. If he gets too close to Fisher, or Kobe, or whoever is out there, they can speed around BWright and head for the hoop. So BWright has to space himself back a bit to guard the drive. As a result, his arm lengths don’t help him that much when he’s giving the shooter enough room to shoot. And if the shooters recognize that, they’ll just keep firing away.

Radman was miss city for most of the game - Reggie is 3rd PG option

I watch Vlad play and I see he tries on defense and is usually in the right position. It’s just his inability to hit the open shot or make an easy lay-up that kills me. I think he missed his first six shots and some of them looked pretty bad. His defense on Kobe was pretty good but, as the commentators said, it’s probably only because Kobe is not at 100%. I really hope during the season D. Wright is getting 35 mins at SF and B. Wright and Vlad split the rest.

I thought Reggie did an excellent job bringing the ball up and getting some time at PG. Clearly, better things happen when he has the ball vs. Lin or Bell. To me Curry is PG #1 and Monta is PG #2, but I was comforted by the fact that Reggie seems to be a very viable option as the 3rd PG. There is no reason why 2 out of those 3 guys can’t play together during every part of the game.

Beans had a surprisingly good +/- last night but his man-on-man defense is still very limited. It seems that when he really tries he ends up getting a foul. Also, when he and Lee are in the game together he still manages to pull most of the boards. If he could just be a more reliable stopper I’d be happier with his game.

Monta was ON FIRE during the first quarter. It was so much fun watching him swish shot after shot. I agree with everyone that playing him 53 minutes is ridiculous. Hopefully Smart can manage his time better during the season. If that doesn’t happen, I seriously doubt Monta will play more than 70 games.

You hope B. Wright get time at SF? The guy can’t defend 3’s. He proved that this game and will prove it again, most likely. He’s played fairly well at PF in the past, and there is no reason to assume he won’t in the future.

I think we should buy out Bell

That’s the only way to open a roster spot and cut dead weight.

Only way we cut Bell

Is if we have a quality Guard to replace him with. We are severely lacking in that department right now.

Assessment after 2 TV Games

Living in LA I got to both pre-season games against the Lakers – Here’s what I’d say about the team:

The Good:
- Curry’s shot is already on
- Monta looks in good mode to play off the ball as a 2.
- Rebounding is better
- Lee is great scorer in the paint – much needed

The Bad:
- Offense hasn’t clue – Nellie will be sorely missed there
- Pick and Roll ain’t happening yet
- Team defense ain’t happening yet

The Ugly:
- OMG – Gadzuric and Bell are AWFUL. I’m not sure anyone is even going to want their expirings. If they’re not bought out, they should bet 13-15 and off the active roster. I’d rather have Chris Hunter than Gadzuric.
- Beyond Monte and Curry our guard situation is pretty bad (Williams more 3).

The best offseason move: David Lee
The worst offseason move: Letting CJ Watson go.

Voted for Monta for...

his 41 pts on 30 shots, and, unfortunately, his 7 turnovers. Still trying to figure out how Lakers managed nine more shot attempts than Ws given GSW rebounding edge. Seems to have been statistical difference in game.
