Warriors vs Rockets Preview

I just wanted to know what are you guys predictions to this game. Being our home opener, a win could help our confidence as a team. Is it true that Yao Ming wont play? Is this a plus?

I predict that we will win this game. During the preseason the warriors have been very good in oracle and plus the rockets are playing back to back games. I just want to know what are you concerns or predictions... I cant till Wednesday. Go Warriors!!!!!

I think the Warriors will win

the Rockets without Yao will be less effective against the Warriors. Kevin Martin will probably score a lot and make the game close, but I think in the end the Warriors will win, the clincher is that the game is in Oracle.

If we don't win this one

we better jump on the Barnes tank for the second game.

Yao won’t be playing on the 2nd night of back to backs. Yes, the Rockets open their season with a back to back.

Hard to bet against the warriors

obviously on any given night any team can win, so I’m not making guarantees, but Houston is the second night of a back-to-back, on the road, without Yao, and the Oracle is always rocking, especially for openers. I think the Warriors have five starters who all feel like they have something to prove Wednesday night. I’m really looking forward to it. My five things I’m most excited about for Wednesday’s game:

1) Monta Ellis’ improved defense showing versus Kevin Martin.

2) Steph Curry and David Lee unveiling their pick-n-roll against a slower defender.

3) The Warriors having a huge rebounding differential with Yao out.

4) At least three plays that are eye-popping for their creativity or their hustle – the warriors may not play their best, but I believe they’ll play their best.

5) Monta’s smile.

haha whoops EDIT

I said “the warriors may not play their best, but I believe they’ll play their best.” that’s a stupid statement. I meant to say “the warriors may not play their best, but I believe they’ll play their hardest.

No yao, and they’re on back to back…i like our chances.

by GovernorStephCurry on Oct 26, 2010 12:00 AM PDT reply actions

we would win with yao there to

we always fair well against yao when he is playing because he can’t keep up with the style. A healthy beans and lee would really put him in trouble on defense.

Either way warriors win 108-95

Wednesday can't come quick enough

Our offense seems a bit sloppy, but I think we can come up with a big win. It should be a great game! The Brooks/Martin vs Curry/Ellis matchup is a great way to start the season.
I’d like to see David Lee d up Brad Miller, with Biedrins assigned to Scola. I think that will be more effective than lining up straight on them. Scola’s pretty damn good, but Biedrins length would give him fits, leaving DLee to wipe the glass. If Lee can’t handle Brad Miller, we might have made a 5 year mistake.

Anyways, Adleman is a great coach and the Rockets are pretty deep, but our starters appear to have the edge in this one, and the fans should be fired up enough to help push us over the top.
This is one of those teams listed ahead of us that many fans here have said we will overtake. If we’re going to do that, beating them in our crib now very well could be a tiebreaker for the 8th seed.

Sorry I’m rambling. I’m a little too excited.
GOOOOOO WARRIORS!!!!

It depends on how the Lakers and Rockets game goes tonight

If Lakeshow blows them out and they end up getting embarrassed then they will be a much tougher team when they play us.
That being said, I have a hunch that Curry, who has not had a great preseason, is going to put on a freaking clinic. I predict 24 pts, 8 dimes, 2 steals, 4 boards, and sadly, five turnovers.

by tjmax on Oct 26, 2010 8:02 AM PDT reply actions

You have very high standards for a good preseason.

Steph’s only issue in preseason was his turnovers. Among the 110 or so “qualified” (played enough minutes) guards in preseason, Steph ranked

8th in scoring
14th in FG%
12th in assists
7th in steals
9th in efficiency
4th in combined points, rebounds and assists.

I’d say that’s pretty close to top-10 out of 60 starters. But mebbe you’re comparing him to Monta, who was

1st in scoring
24th in FG%
40th in assists
5th in steals
5th in efficiency
2nd in combined points, rebs, and assists.

Any way you rate it, we have two very good guards.

Umm…I wouldn’t say “any way you rate it”. If you look at the win scores, Monta was the 42nd best SG in the pre-season.

I didn't say good - I said GREAT

I only saw a what was aired on tv or in a video stream, so he may have played better in games that were not shown. But I saw a guy who was holding back in my opinion.
I still think that Curry tends to defer to Monta too much, hopefully they find the right balance as the year progresses.

you are putting too much pressure on a guy with a tender ankle. Just playing the game, getting his team mates involved , and not getting more hurt is a reasonable goal.

bottom line is

that needs to translate to wins..there’s been productive players in our league on basement dweller teams. No thanks.

My prediction..revamp warriors defense does enough to keep tired rockets at bay..transition offense and a couple of ind. offensive efforts boost warriors to comfortable win. :) hopefully

Scola vs Lee scares me from a Warriors perspective.

I think Scola is one of the most underrated players’ in any sport. He is very impressive to watch, his numbers back that up too. The rest of their lineup matches well with ours also.

Curry v Brooks: I’ll give a slight edge to Steph because its the second game in as many nights for Houston, and it’s our opener. Steph will be amped, provided he’s 100%.

Monta v Martin: Monta has more to prove to us the fans than any other Warrior, whether coach, player, or exec, and he knows that. Expect him to lead by example with smart(er) shots and good D. I expect around 30 poitns for both players though.

DWright v Battier: Tie. Nuff said

DLee v Scola: Scola. Even though its a back to back, I’m expecting Scola to be saving a lot of energy for tomorrow considering there’s no Yao. Scola is easily a top 5 PF. I see him wil 27 and 12 to go along with 5 assists. DLee will get a double double.

Biedrins v BMiller: This is the one area where we have a CLEAR andvantage both defensively and on the glass. If Dre can stay out of foul trouble, he’ll get 15 and 15. However, Miller is a crafty vet with a lot of moves, so I expect Biedrins to be in foul trouble.

Bench: Tie, only because I don’t know much about Houston’s bench, but it can’t be much worse than ours.

Score: Warriors 102 Houston 96

It’ll be close, Monta will lead all scorers. We will outrebound the Rockets, they’ll play solid D, shoot better from the line and distance. However, when it’s all said and done ROARacle comes thru, everyone leaves happy.

by myk on Oct 26, 2010 2:42 PM PDT reply actions

Wow, those are some pesimistic assumptions.

Curry is much better than Brooks. It’s not even particularly close. Steph is an above-average efficiency scoreer, Brooks is a below-average-efficiency scorer, and they score similar volumes. Curry is better in assists, steals, and blocks. If we offered them Curry for Brooks they would make the deal in a heartbeat.

Monta v Martin? Depends which Monta shows up.

DWright vs. Battier? Nuf said? Not really. Battier’s game showed substantial decline last year. I think Battier finally earned this reputation as “the guy who does the little things that help you win” and it’s going to take a couple of years for his reputation for account for the fact that he might no longer be that player.

If last year is the new normal for Battier, he’s no long anything special. He posted his worst scoring efficiency since his rookie year. I’m not saying Battier is now a bad player, but the notion that he’s a “nuff said” player over D Wright is sort of mind-boggling. It’s not at all clear that he’s better than Wright.

Scola isn’t anywhere close to a top 5 PF in the league. In two of the past three years he’s been closer to “average” than good. Lee is a better scorer and rebounder than Scola is. And it’s not like Scola is a great defender, either. But top 5 PF? Lee Dirk Gasol Duncan Amare KG Bosh Wallace Odom …

Bench? You talk about our bench like it’s terrible, but there’s no reason to think Brandan is terrible, and we knwo Reggie isn’t terrible. In fact, those two guys might both be rather good.

by Ronaldinho on Oct 26, 2010 3:13 PM PDT up reply actions

We don't have a bad bench

with a few good players.
I like the Rockets bench. There is a strong case to be made that Kyle Lowry is better than Brooks. Guys like Hayes, Jordan Hill are solid bench contributors. Courtney Lee is also solid. I would like their bench a lot more if Chase Budinger was healthy.

After tonight's game. Brooks looks like > Curry

24 pts, 9 ast, 3 rebs, 2TO, 0PF, 4/6 3pts. Wow!

and Martin 26 pts, 3/6 3 pts.

Hope Houston got really really tired!!!

They are different

players so its more what style of pg you want. I agree, Brooks was a boss last night. His quickness will be a test for Steph. He seems to me like hes a little better of a defender too but we’ll see how Steph does tonight. I’m most worried about Scola and Yao (if he plays).

by tom88gsw on Oct 27, 2010 8:36 AM PDT up reply actions

they had good games

But the Houston guards only outscored the Laker guards by 4. Ming and Miller added 18 – Pau had 29…….

I hope it can become clear to the media that Pau is the Lakers best player this year.

But i really doubt it after they robbed him of the finals MVP for Kobe, even when Kobe’s supporters thought he didn’t play well.

by GovernorStephCurry on Oct 27, 2010 12:06 AM PDT up reply actions

He clearly is

Tonight should be interesting for our front line. I’m not worried about our backcourt +/- at all – RW, Ellis, and Steph averaged 50 combined in the preseason, and I would be very surprised if we can’t run on on the Rockets. That’ll depend on the boards, so….

It was one game.

Why would you count that game more than the 82 Brooks played last year?

by Ronaldinho on Oct 27, 2010 9:02 AM PDT up reply actions

I agree Scola v. Lee could be trouble

I suggest that we switch defensive assignments, leaving Biedrins on Scola and Lee on Miller.

by Uwe Blog on Oct 26, 2010 4:33 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions

That's a good idea

Biedrins is a quicker defender than Lee anyway, both Miller and Scola are slow though. However, Scola is very smart on offense around the basket, I could see him getting Biedrins in foul trouble real quick. We’ll see

Without a healthy Yao, the only particularly scary thing about the Rockets is the three-point marksmanship of Martin, Brooks, and Budinger. If Monta, Steph and Dorell can hold those dudes in the range of 30% from deep, rather than 50%-ish, I think the Ws win this game running away.

There will be no extra point!

Wright is, as far as I’ve heard. Curry’s still “day to day” with the mild sprain — I’d assume he’ll tape it up and give it a go, but we’ll see.

Dubs really need to stop letting teams get hot shooting from outside.

Perimeter defense. They giving up wide open looks without any closeout whatsoever. Allowing uncontested 3’s early will give the other team the ablility to rain down 3’s down the stretch, whether contested or not.
Closeout on the shooters. Keep the hands up. Even if they beat us off the dribble we have the interior defense now to contest their drives, whereas before we didn’t.

by Whitman Lam on Oct 26, 2010 8:15 PM PDT reply actions

Thats like saying we can beat them because we took them to OT in the preseason. Coming off a back to back with no Yao we can beat them. Scola wont grab 16 boards over Lee.

No ,he played 24 minutes and fouled out. Their plan is top protect his health by limiting him to 24 minutes and no back to back games so that’s why they say he won’t play tonight.

Lights please, lights please, turn off the lights.

by Skeptic con Urquell on Oct 27, 2010 9:48 AM PDT up reply actions

Wow, the Rockets looked good tonight

Getting them the night after a hard fought game with the Lakers and with Yao sitting should help the Warriors but it’s still tough. The backcourt of Brooks and Martin is going to be a real test to see if the Warriors’ new emphasis on defense will show up this year. I think Ellis has the athleticism to harass Martin but it’s going to take consistent effort on defense which is something he was never asked to show under Nelson. Brooks speed could be a problem for Curry, especially if the ankle is still tender, Curry will have to play smart, let him shoot from outside and try to shepherd him to help on drives.

Rebounding is going to be important as well. No Yao is nice but guys like Scola and Hayes can board as well, and Miller seems to have a little left in him. It would be nice to have Amundson around but maybe we can get some minutes out of Adrien, or at the least tell him to watch Chuck Hayes like a hawk and try to emulate him as much as possible.

I wanna say that the Warriors should be slight favorites, mainly due to home court and the Rockets playing back to back, but it is not going to be an easy one. The Warriors are going to have to play well and put all their talk about better defense and rebounding to practice.

by OkayJay81 on Oct 27, 2010 12:26 AM PDT reply actions

what killed the Rockets

was the turnover differential. Sound familiar? The Lakers picked their pockets clean. That’s good news for us. Brooks and Martin had six to’s between them. And they’re going against what could well be the best backcourt in steals in Monta and Steph.
