Keith Smart
On Monta Ellis’ Scoring Tonight:
"This young man has made a complete turnaround in his life, and once your life is in order things start to work perfectly for you. His relationship and his life are in great order, and the guy has been ready to play since the summer working with Coach Silas in Memphis, and he's carried that over when he came into town early and he’s done that through preseason. He’s also been teaching. There was a point in practice yesterday, I was getting ready to explain to explain something I saw, and right then he stepped in, and that’s growth. He’s also trying to do it (score) in an efficient way, I can’t say how glad I am to be coaching this guy at this particular point in his career."

On Monta Ellis’ Efficient Scoring:
"At halftime he was 10-13 and he was scoring in an efficient way. He’s not wanting to have the ball in his hand a lot, but he’s taking shots in the area where he shot the ball from a couple of years ago, the mid-range pull-up. He’s just got to understand that he has a unique skill where he can shoot the three; he can put it on the floor for the mid-range pull-up and get to the rim."

On Stephen Curry:
"He took care of the ball, not having the careless turnovers. As I said during preseason, I’m not worried about Steph. He’s a smart player, he’s going to figure stuff out. I have to keep him actively engaged in the game and not settle for being a passer, because there is so much he can do for the team."
Monta Ellis
On Tonight's Game:
"Just happy we got the win. It was just one of those games where shots were going in early on and then they just kept falling."

On Stephen Curry:
"That’s what he has to do. We have to work off each other. They were playing us a little different, coach ran a play for us and they picked up what we were doing, then he noticed that what they were doing. That’s what he has to do. When I am going like that and come out the game and he’s in the game, he has to make offensive plays like he did tonight."

On Winning Opening Night:
"It’s a relief. We’ve been going through preseason and training camp for this moment right here. To get the first win to start the season off in the right direction says a lot."
David Lee
On Tonight's Game:
"We didn’t do too many good things on the defensive end, but one thing we did do well was that we out rebounded them tonight. They actually shot under 50%, but we let them get to the free throw line 52 times which was a problem. A problem we have to clean up. Offensively we played pretty well and I thought our energy at the end of them game carried us through."

Don't Trade Monta

Huff likes it raw

by JohnnyDangerously on Oct 27, 2010 10:44 PM PDT reply actions

He hasn't swayed me yet.

But he played like what we expected him to become after the We Believe era when he became the #1 option.

by SPENCEMAN on Oct 27, 2010 10:49 PM PDT up reply actions

Monta has always had the capability to play great games like this.

One game shouldn’t change anybody’s opinion about him.

But … he played within himself most of the game. He took only 3-4 dumb shots (and hit at least one of them anyway) and mostly played the game the right way.

If he keeps doing that, trading him will be really, really dumb.

by Ronaldinho on Oct 27, 2010 10:54 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah

I’ve always said that he’d play much better with a healthy team around him especially now that he trusts Curry with the ball and has David Lee down low to play with. Hopefully he keeps up the good play, he almost scored 50 against the Lakers in their second preseason game against each other, too.

by Precise Films Productions on Oct 27, 2010 11:00 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, even though he took a lot of shots, they all came within the realm of the offense. Only a couple shots were forced, and i'll live with that.

This game didn’t change my opinion of him really, but it shows me he’s in a much better mental state than last year. Did not play good defense against Martin, but the effort was there and Martin’s a great scorer.

24 shots taken for 46 pts

doesn’t seem like a lot of shots to me – plus, he was in a zone, he should shoot when he is dialed in

by tjmax on Oct 27, 2010 11:06 PM PDT up reply actions

It's a lot of shots

but very very high efficiency. If that was his FGA/G average, he would have led the league last season.

by Naticus on Oct 28, 2010 1:13 AM PDT up reply actions

You don't think 24 shots is a lot?

Along with 12 free throws? I said he played great but that is still a lot of shots for anyone.

by GovernorStephCurry on Oct 27, 2010 11:37 PM PDT up reply actions

24 shots is fine if they come in the flow of the game and they're not forced.

He got a lot of those shots because his teammates got him the ball when he had an advantage on his man. He wasn’t forcing it, except for a couple of times. He wasn’t shooting circus shots over multiple defenders.

But Marcus THompson had an interesting point. The Rockets defense was geared to stop Lee. The challenge for Monta is going to be not shooting it when he’s our opponent’s primary focus. If he can do that, he’s going to have a really good season.

by Ronaldinho on Oct 28, 2010 9:18 AM PDT up reply actions

sweet video of the intros

I have been hyped all offseason, but to see a real game, with the new players and unis and the obvious chemistry – man o man – good stuff.
Big surprise to me was the energy and play of Carney – feels like a good pick up who may be a real contributor.

Recap!

Was at game. Incredible atmosphere. Lee is a great player. Very good scorer, underrated passer (probably our 2nd best passer), monster on boards… really struggled with Scola, but Gasol did last night, and i don’t fault him. Steph’s added some quickness/athleticism to his game. He can drive better, his handle looks good, made some bad decisions but that’s okay. Andris looked very good, got some bad foul calls on him, specifically the Martin foul where it was a charge. Played good team defense, passed nicely, scored good amount, rebounded like a beast. Monta played ok defense, and he was playing within the team’s offense. I didn’t even care about the points. I only recall a few plays were he was iso’d at the top and put his head down. He played to his strengths which were the post up game, the mid range jumper of the screen, and driving to the hoop and getting fouls/layups. Very glad to see him mature and accept his role. Dorell played some nice defense, got some blocks and steals, was a nice facilitator, and hit his spot up 3’s! Vlad… I root for the guy, but i don’t want him playing… he looks finished but we will see. I hope Smart stops playing him so much.
Reggie looks like a good backup point guard/point forward. Keeps everyone involved but takes over when necessary. Carney surprised me. Played some good defense, rebounded, drove to the hoop with authority! Has a bad jumpshot, but maybe he can develop a Devean George standstill shooting role? Brandan looked good, might have missed a Scola box out in the 4th which got Smart fuming, and didn’t turn his head in time on a pass from Steph. Charlie Bell is a non factor. Gadzuric could be okay if he stopped fouling, and never took shots, but that’s not happening. Surprised Adrien didn’t get more time, but when he was in he got a rebound in just a minute, continuing his monster rebounding per minute totals.

That’s all i got. I recorded the intro’s from row 3 section 115, so i might post them! It was really cool. Lacob was sitting courtside infront of my dad and I and he and Monta had a nice exchange.
Ref’s sucked tonite…oh well nothing new. I actually like the new tech rule as long as the ref’s don’t go crazy. It keeps the game going, makes Smart have to get on the ref’s lets the players play the game. They let them be subtle with their disagreements, didn’t T them up when they asked for explanations or didn’t agree.

KEEP MONTA

THIS KID IS GOLDEN AND HAS SO MUCH ROOM TO KEEP GROWING.

one game we woulda lost without him.

and he was being guarded a ton by shane battier whose a extremely good defender.

and he was being guarded a ton by shane battier whose [sic] a extremely good defender.

Battier defended him some of the night, but not all night. Battier does not look the part of “extremely good defender” anymore either. He is not the player he was a few years ago. He was not that player last year and in the two games I’ve watched him play this year, he seems to have lost another step.

by jae on Oct 28, 2010 12:52 PM PDT up reply actions

he’s finally a leader and he wants to win so badly now.

Totally agreed with this, but I’m not seeing the “so much room to keep growing” part. What do you see him growing into?

If he grows back into his ‘07/08 self, I’ll be thrilled, personally.

There will be no extra point!

by Sleepy Freud on Oct 27, 2010 11:47 PM PDT up reply actions

he has room to grow

his mid range is superb, but monta can work on his long range jumper. tonight it looked like it was there, but i doubt it will be consistant.

he also can develop his all around game – something that would solidify his leader aspirations. obviously improving his rebounding numbers would be difficult. but monta truly has potential to turn into a super star and a feared name in the league if he can learn to distribute the ball more/widen his vision of the entire court as well as perfect his 3.

the best part is that he is perfectly capable of doing all of this. he’s itching to be the sole proven leader of this team.

by dubious dubz on Oct 28, 2010 12:01 AM PDT up reply actions

honestly

the champ scores like its nobody’s business. he OWNED defensive pro shane battier as well has slid under scola and haye’s long wingspan.

i dont care if yao wasnt there. monta made a statement tonight that he knows how to get it done. we were facing hte rockets tonight, a team that is expected to make a playoff appearance.

by dubious dubz on Oct 28, 2010 12:05 AM PDT up reply actions

Again, I’d hesistate to draw as much from “owning” Battier at this point. Ellis wasn’t Battier’s primary assignment for much of the time Battier played, and Battier sat for more than half the game. Battier is also not the same defender he used to be. At 32 he’s lost mor than a bit. His reputation exceeds his ability at this point. Ellis worked against Martin much of the night. Martin has been maligned much like Ellis for being a zero at the defensive end.

Ellis had a great game. Let’s not go too far beyond that right now.

by jae on Oct 28, 2010 1:15 PM PDT up reply actions

lol!

i saw him from one of the replays on tv, he was in the crowd wearing the oakland california hoodie and i instantly recognized him, (he was wearing the hoodie in a recent music video).

and the hoodie looked pink/white

by gdabilahrom on Oct 28, 2010 12:18 AM PDT up reply actions

Yeah

For some reason it’s so easy to spot him on tv. It seems like he’s always sitting in the same area in all the games and he sticks out for some reason. I remember back during Game 3 of the Warriors/Mavericks Playoffs series, everyone was wearing We Believe shirts and Fab was wearing an airbrushed t-shirt.

by Precise Films Productions on Oct 28, 2010 11:45 AM PDT up reply actions

It’s always funny to hear him yelling insults. I remember last year some other teams announcers were laughing and talking about him as ‘their 3rd broadcaster’

by 123707THIZZ on Oct 28, 2010 2:22 PM PDT up reply actions

That was when the Lakers were in town.

Ron Artest gave Fab tickets to the game and people could hear Fab’s commentary through the Lakers’ broadcast. haha.

by Precise Films Productions on Oct 28, 2010 2:26 PM PDT up reply actions

Well, a win is nice.

Not too excited about all the fouls, but the effort was there on defense. Smart’s rotations sort of made me want to shoot myself somewhere non-lethal, so we’ll see how that goes throughout the season. I’d rather never see Carney at PF or Radmanovic at C again, though (his name is Adrien. Play him).

Monta made a lot of shots. That’s all I can say after this game. I’m glad he made those shots, but I’m not exactly glad that he took them. 7-12 from 16-23 feet is nice but also unsustainable. He was hot though, so I can’t complain. I just hope in the games where he starts out 0-5 or 0-7 on pull up jumpers he’ll do something else.

when his jumper is on he is unguardable. even when they give him space and play off him he can get by defenders but now he has other options so they can’t colapse on him like they did last year.

his 3pt shot is much improved so now the next step for him will be to set up others when the double team comes.

True. I’m wondering if he still would have taken all those shots if he wasn’t as hot on the court. Hopefully he knows how to play right when he’s having an off-night. I think if his mid range jumpers aren’t going in, he should be smart enough to either just try to drive in most of the time to draw fouls or run plays for his teammates.

He shot only 2 3’s, while most of his shots were good ones. He used his speed to get open jumpers and worked well, complementing Curry. I say, well done, other than maybe he could have gotten a few more assists. But he had only 1 TO, crazily.

The Golden Glow is the only way to reach the upper level.

Not going to get rebounds if our perimeter and interior D are as weak as they were the first half.

To their credit the Dubs did look better on D the 2nd half, but come on, we still gave up 128 points. We can’t count on Monta to go 18-24 every night.

Yeah

I saw bits and pieces of the 1st half, and the Warriors looked like they weren’t stopping anybody. But they looked like they adjusted in that 3rd qtr and cut off some driving lanes and options and made the Rockets have to work harder for their shots. So it’s not completely nonexistent. I think Monta mentioned something to that effect in the post game interview. I’d give them a few games to see if this new defense shows up.

Big 3 in place

The Warriors are so young. Big 3 in Ellis, Curry and Lee. Now we have to keep giving them the necessary supporting cast. R. Williams looks like the new version of the Mircowave because he can score immediately, but it’s his all around game that will help make our Guard position stable with a solid 3 man rotation. Biedrins is very key with his athleticism and energy. He won’t bang with the top big men in the league, but he must realize his speed and quickness will give guys fits. Use that to his advantage. David Lee is the best Warrior’s big man since Chris Webber. Great all around offensive game, banger, hard worker even though he lack elite qualities to be a top defender. A huge option for our team on the post. Can’t remember when the last time the Warriors had an All-Star in the post area. D. Wright will be a key addition and we’ll have to see how his game translate in Golden State. B. Wright must stay healthy and show that he’s not a bust.

Defense

I loved the game but wish there would have been more defense. The rebounding is great and the turnovers okay, and I’ve always liked a fast paced offense. But the game was closer than it should have been. Overall I think this is going to be a great Warrior season.
