Around SBN: Ray Allen Fighting Age, Injury And His New Role

How many more years do you think Marco Belinelli has left in the NBA? He's simply not an NBA caliber player. There's just too many gaping holes in his game (namely defense, shot selection, and hoops IQ).

The Patrick O’Bryant vs. Carney part kind of cracks me up in retrospect. I might be the only person on the planet who still thinks that Ike wasn’t all that bad (although not willing to say the same thing after his ACL surgery). I was fortunate enough a year and a half ago to hear Bobby Jackson talk about how when Ike was with the Kings he was just killing people in practice – he said he was the best player on the team (although not saying much I know but hey that’s better than most would give him credit for) – and he felt bad for the kid because it seemed like there were always politics behind the scenes limiting his opportunity to play real minutes in games.

"Once again i still dont get it. We have the best backcourt in the league. 1 of the best front courts in the West. A nice bench. What team in the west cant we compete with besides the Lakers? What team in the west u guys can look at and say damn they’re much better than us? Seriously? Not being a homer at all." ~ J-Ridah's Golden State Warriors analysis.

Why are we still talking about Marco?

Who really cares about that now?

and also because

he has a lasagne named after him at one of the best Italian restaurants in the City

and also because he used to always go up to the TV announcers during pre-game warmups and hug (sometimes borderline inappropriate caressing and rubbing of chest and face)

He seemed to lack much energy for the pro game compared to his college numbers?

This.

Ike never scored in single figures from the moment he stepped foot on the floor at Arizona St. He was a double-double machine, but also a BMOC at a huge party school, and I think being in the league just wasn’t that fun for him. Call it Leinart-itis.

Surely not for basketball skill.

actually... marco does have basketball skill..

and I suspect that if he is given enough court time and belief by a coach…he will prove many of these great basketball ‘opinionists’ wrong….

Its a new dawn...its a new day...its a new owner ....for us!!!!! and I'm FEELING GOOD!!!!!!

I don't know if I still like him

BUT I’m not ashamed to admit that I thought he was gonna be one hell of a player! Boy was I wrong! I didn’t wanna give him up when he was traded but that’s why I’m typing on a blog and am not a GM for an NBA team.

Definitely. I still remember him getting into Danny Granger’s head. Marco had potential until the Warriors’ injury bug caught him.

I'm not buying it.

Dude has talent, he just isn’t consistent to save his life. And he can’t hit a friggin wide open jumper to save his Rambo collectibles. Sure he can make the fadeaway-behind-the-backboard-over-the-defender-when-two-other-guys-are-wide-open-shot.

But who’s bitter?

wait, you're talking about Monta Ellis now

Yup, that’s monta for sure

funny, looks from the clip like the Dubs only have 4 players on the floor

Belinelli may win the starting gig from what I read.

The New Orleans Times-Picayune has the story and here’s an excerpt:

And while Williams isn’t ready to commit just yet, it’s appearing more and more likely that Belinelli will be in the starting backcourt with Chris Paul, giving the Hornets’ bench – an area many consider a weak link – the boost of having the scoring capability of Marcus Thornton and Peja Stojakovic in reserve.

True.

But theres no need for Marco news on the front page of this site anymore, i mean he’s been gone for 2 years, and were excited about our team.

poor hoops IQ? lmao

Belinelli’s hoops IQ is higher than most, idk where that came from. Dude sees the floor very well and knows how to move without the ball.

I can’t wait for Beli to prove all the doubters wrong. When given adequate and consistent minutes, the guy showed a lot of skills. We saw what he was capable of for a few months there, before he messed up his ankle. He was a huge bright spot for the W’s that year. How quickly some forget. I think he’s got the skills to be Ray Allen-ish or Ginobili-ish, at worst JJ Reddick-ish. His biggest problem has been confidence, which went hand in hand with being on a tight-leash and not getting consistent minutes to develop a rhythm. If he is pegged as the absolute starter for the Hornets, and knows he’ll be getting minutes every night, he can provide a lift to that team and be a legitimate starter for a long time.

If this article is a dig at Mullin’s drafting skills, then I think that’s fair. But a GM’s responsibilities aren’t just about draft picks. It’s undeniable Mullin brought stability, respect around the league, and a concrete PLAN to move the team forward. Can’t say that about many previous Warrior GM’s. He was a noob GM who grew in the job, corrected his mistakes, and was unfairly ousted by a dysfunctional FO & coach. Wish Mullin and Beli nothing but the best.

Belinelli was never much more than a “meh” player. He had holes in his game that were always obvious. The love for him seemed as much a pychology experiment as anything else. Fans tend not to have the most honest, objective opinions of players on their team. Without reason to hate a player, they tend to overvalue even marginal players.

So many people whined when he was given away, as if he was a valuable commodity that clearly everyone should want. This despite the fact that he was an average efficiency scoring off guard who may have looked like he could pass, but just didn’t do it often enough, making calls that he’d be a point guard seem absurd. He was also someone who was an extreme liability on the boards. He was a reason shooter, but not a great one and provided very little beyond that. This was more or less what his Euro league numbers should have suggested. It was true his two years here and his play in Toronto did absolutely nothing to change that. His game changed when he left our GSW only in that he got to the line a bit more and passed a bit less more or less balancing his rather pedestrian productivity.

He never got consistent minutes because his play rarely warranted it. It’s possible that he’ll somehow become a very good player. He’s about to enter his prime years, so it’s possible he’ll make a jump and play better than his so far consistent “meh”. Safe money, based on what he’s done so far suggests that this is not the case.

well also Marco < AmMo < DWright

That was the real reason we let him go, just didn’t need him when Morrow was better at pretty much everything (except maybe passing, Marco did have some really sweet passes (and his handles actually were not bad either))

Poor shot selection bad defense and inability to rebound will always make a promising draft pick seem a poor choice. And Marco showed all that in Europe. But GMs will always be tantalized by shooters with range despite their shortcomings, so I don’t blame Mullin for taking that risk.

I do think Marco’s matured alot since he was with the Warriors. Like you say, he went to the line more last year, and that’s because he was going to the basket more instead of settling for jump shots. His stats declined last year, but what they don’t show is that while he was in the Raptors rotation they were actually doing well to consider themselves in a position to make the POs. Demar Derozan was virtually handed the starter’s spot on a silver platter; if Marco had been able to compete for that spot it’s likely he would have won it.

I’m still hoping he can prove that he belongs, playing alongside Paul should help. I guess he’s shown better defense in NO because he just beat out Marcus Thornton for the starting SG spot, and apparently Monty Williams is pretty defensive-minded.

Bellinelli look so good in preseasons and summer leagues too. I thought he’d be a star. I guess that is not the case anymore.
