Keith Smart
On Tonight's Game:
"Well we're in the entertainment business, so we are going to make sure our fans get their moneys worth, but it puts the coaches, ownership and the general manager in the hospital. When you are playing with a big lead it’s hard to maintain composure to keep things solid. We also got into foul trouble right off the bat and that took some steam out of the team when our main guys really couldn’t function in the third quarter…which we normally we play pretty well in the third quarter."
On Keeping Monta Ellis on the Bench with Foul Trouble:
"I would’ve still done the same. Rather than losing him early at the top of the quarter I would’ve bought that time, I think you have too. He’s playing against two guys that are aggressive, that know how to draw fouls and next you thing you know he’s got a foul at the eight minute mark and I’ll be stuck without him for the rest of the game. At least if he fouled out it would’ve been with three or two minutes. I’m looking at the clock and the score and what happens on the floor. One thing that helps is that the team (Pistons) is not trying to do something quick. It actually plays into favor for me, because it’s slow and the clock is ticking and they are not going after anything fast. They were doing post-ups and isolations which eats up more time, which is helping my side. It actually paid off tonight. Maybe it comes back to bite me sometime in February but tonight we got a win."
Dorell Wright
On Tonight's Game:
"The number one thing is our toughness at the end. We got key stops when we were supposed to. We're a young team and we kept fighting. We got the key rebound and made big shots, and that's the positive thing we have to look at. The negative is giving up that big lead. When you play a veteran team like that they are always going to fight back and not give up."
On Playing at Home:
"It’s great being back in front of your home fans. They mean a lot down the stretch; they get loud and rattle guys at the free throw line, making them miss shots. We have some of the best fans in the NBA and they were really there for us at the key part of the game."
On the Steal with Six Seconds left in the game:
"I know the type of player Ben Gordon is. I’ve been in the east so I know a lot of these guys better than a lot of guys in here. So I knew Ben (Gordon) wasn’t going to pass because he wanted to hit the big shot. I was just reading it and as soon as he didn’t see me I just reached in there and used my length to get the steal."
Notes
- Keith Smart says that calbert Cheaney keeps track of 50/50 plays, which sounds like plays that could go to either team.
What's next?
- Plenty of time to rest. Our next game is on Friday at home against the Knicks again.

Smart continues to blow my mind with his terrible coaching...
As much as I hate TK…I think he put it best
“Most relevant in comparison: Adrien +16 in 16 minutes, Vlad-Rad -13 in 23 minutes. "
And to bring vlad back in…to play center…at crunch time? Why!? We end up missing multiple rebounding opportunities and let the Pistons get shot after shot…Thanks coach.

However, what sticks to me is the the Warriors not getting the key rebound off the missed FT in the 4th (I think Stuckey ended up with it) and Vlad Rad was no where to be found….

I don’t get why Adrien came in, had a +16 and didnt see the floor until late second half… Mind blown.

Adrien subbed in for Vlad rad at the 4:54 mark of the 1st Qtr. Then came in again at the 9:54 mark of the 4th quarter.

I'm kind of happy we didn't take Monroe
We didn’t need to draft a stud 4 since we got one right after the draft in Lee, and I expect Udoh to bring a lot of energy and defense. Monroe just doesn’t bring much of either to the table. He looks slow and out of place out there.

And?
Turiaf was not a lottery pick. He has pretty much been what was expected of him.
Udoh is the 6th pick in the draft, and people would be ok if he turns out to be another Turiaf? Come on, at least aspire for Udoh to become a Turiaf that actually rebounds the ball or something.

I still don’t understand why people expect so much from draft picks. Most of them turn out to not be very good at all. Like much less valuable than Turiaf.

#6 picks since 2000
You know, I was going to say the hit rate with #6 picks was a bit better than that, but looking at the #6 picks since 2000, I think you’re basically right.
DerMarr Johnson
Shane Battier
Dajuan Wagner
Chris Kaman
Josh Childress
Martell Webster
Brandon Roy
Yi Jianlian
Danilo Gallinari
Jonny Flynn (haha!)
By my count, that’s four busts (Johnson, Flynn, Wagner, Yi), one star (Roy), and five NBA rotation players who are roughly in the same boat as Turiaf.
Still, Turiaf strikes me as a reasonable projection for Udoh — not overly optimistic, not overly pessimistic. Both have good frames, long arms, good motors, and winning personalities. Both are great shotblockers, good passers, and mediocre rebounders with mediocre but not non-existent offensive skills. I don’t love the pick, but there’s still no one who was picked behind him over whom I’m drooling. Greg Monroe and his .352 TS? Bueller? Anyone?
2010 just looks like a pretty meh draft class, overall. I still wouldn’t be at all surprised if when the final tallies are done, John Wall is the only player from his year who turned out to be better than an average NBA starter.
There will be no extra point!
by Sleepy Freud on Nov 16, 2010 9:38 AM PST up reply actions
Childress in the same boat as Turiaf?
Granted I haven’t seen him or looked at his stats at all this year but he always struck me as better than Turiaf.
Battier in his prime as well. Maybe Kaman if he could stay healthy.
To me the names you listed makes the projection for the 6th pick look a little better than Turiaf.
Childress usually posts a high WP48
and I would also have Gallo above Turiaf. 3 point shooting like that is very valuable.
I believe that ghosts are like dogs. They just do things arbitrarily.

Radman in over Biedrins at the end of the game
My current theory is that Smart does not play Biedrins at the end of the game because he’s afraid the opposing team forcing Biedrins to shoot FTs will shatter his confidence, and that Biedrins must have shown signs to Smart that he’s still not confident about shooting FTs. I’ve complained before that Biedrins needs to man-up about his FT shooting.
But if Biedrins still can’t do it, then we need a veteran rebounding big to come off the bench to take over at the end of close games, who can shoot FTs decently and knows what to do during end of game situations. While I think Radman knows how to handle end of game situations, he’s not the guy we need in there to rebound late missed shots and missed FTs.
We might already have that guy, and it could be Louis Amundson, who’s currently injured. But if he isn’t, then Riley has even more work to do in terms of building a bench. He’ll need a reliable backup point guard AND a veteran rebounding center.
David Lee also fits that mold
If he was available, he hopefully would have been out there instead of Vlad

It might have been Lee and Radman
which would at least give us a better shot at rebounding, while keeping guys out on the floor who can handle end of game situations. But Radman won’t (or shouldn’t) be with us in the long run.
by IQofaWarrior on Nov 15, 2010 11:51 PM PST up reply actions
Possibly in the long run
Right now, even if you exclude the wrist injury, not yet, because he’ll need to show he understands end game situations. He does look like a guy who will grasp it eventually, given all the praise I’ve read about him being a good “student”.
by IQofaWarrior on Nov 15, 2010 11:52 PM PST up reply actions
Here's the thing though
When there’s two minutes left in the game, you can only foul the person with the ball to make them shoot FTs. Fouling someone without the ball, the team gets to choose who takes the FTs.
Also, the person inbounding the ball would know not to try to pass the ball to Biedrins. He needs to be in there for rebounding. I have no idea what Smart is thinking.

Rebound
and timeout. The coach can tell the ref even before the shot is taken, “We want a timeout once we get the rebound.”
This is Kristin Kreuk, now zip it. - GTTM
Possible
but that can end up burning away timeouts unnecessarily. That’s especially dangerous if the opposing team’s intentional fouls eventually works, and they have a 1 or 2 point lead, and then all of a sudden, WE needed those timeouts for us to come back, but we burned them away because Biedrins got the rebounds.
by IQofaWarrior on Nov 16, 2010 12:06 AM PST up reply actions
But when Biedrins gets the rebound
He has the ball.
It has nothing to do with the in bound.

Detroit only had 3 team fouls when he took Beidrins out for Radman so even if they would have fouled there would not have been Free throws. Smart simply messed up.

If there’s one thing Radman knows. It’s how to inbound the ball in late game situations. Remember that play against the Celtics last season? lol
Well, figuring David Lee will be ending most games as our C. If for some reason Smart actually doesn’t go small ball to close the game, Vlad and BWright are the best FT shooters to pair up with Lee. Udoh was 68% from the line at Baylor. Not to expect much since he has missed a lot of time, but would be nice if he could help fill in as the defensive big down the stretch.
All our other bigs, unless I am mistaking anything, hover around 50% and below.

I think what most people are forgeting
Is that with Lee, Amundson, and Odoh back, Vlad never sees the floor. It just so happens that is where are are thin right now.
You sure?
I really really hope so. There have been many occurrences where D. Lee and A. Biedrins are both on the bench in late game situations. For some horrible twisted reason, Smart likes playing 4 wingmen and Vlad at center.
by true torture on Nov 16, 2010 12:03 AM PST up reply actions
We're not thin enough to justify playing Vlad at C now.
Play Adrien. Play Brandan. Play Beans and run the risk of fouls.
We’ve had several games fall apart because we couldn’t get a defensive rebound – including the last Pistons game, which we lost.

My first time going to a warriors game and it was awesome. When Jeremy Lin crossed over bynum or prince(Forgot which one) and then hit the lay up the crowd went CRAZY. Man I can’t wait to go back. Oh yeah Gaz was terrible. This one guy behind me kept cussing about him haha
Ummm, Gadz had 11 rebounds in 12 minutes. That’s really, really good. Lin is less good. And the crowd reactions everytime he touches the ball been done got old.

Even in the Nellie years, I recall people complaining about Brandan’s passive play. Than Smart criticizes him for it during TC, and he really fudged up when given his chance to start. Smart won’t publicly acknowledge it, but I think BWright’s in the doghouse.

Why is he trying to stir up trouble?
Refs were killing us
Calling ticky tack fouls in the 3rd and 4th for the Pistons, but not for Dubs.
I know Warriors should have forced the isssue more to get calls, but the few times they did no whistles were blown.
Then, at the end when Curry won the tip and they did a rejump, I had to wonder if that ref was from Detroit!
Can someone get Nelson in a luxury box as a defacto NFL style coordinator?
Seriously, Keith Smart tried his hardest to throw the game away. The last quarter drove me insane.
Let me re-cap my problems with it off the top of my head:
-Leaves Monta out way too long. Yes he’s on 5 fouls but when it was cut to 8 or 6 points and we couldn’t score clearly he had to be risked. Coming in at 5 mins and fouling out with 2 mins left and coming in at 2 mins really makes no difference.
-Leaving Adrien in. Adrien does a lot of nice things, but defensively particularly on a stretch 4 like Villanueva is NOT the right match up. Smart should have brought Monta in after the first three and put DWright on Charlie V. Even if you don’t want to do that, bring Carney in and use DWright or heck, even Vlad Rad as he theoretically is more adept at defending away from the hoop (or just playing away rom the hoop).
-He brings in Monta and VLAD RAD for Biedrins? Biedrins had been one of only bright spots in the 4th with crucial rebounds, knock outs, blocks and steals. Immediately Detroit got a few easy buckets and rebounds
We were basically lucky 1R2L made a couple nice defense plays at end
Yes we held on playing defense, and that’s Smart’s MO but we cannot keep throwing away big leads like v. NYK, Detroit (both times) etc. The bench is painfully thin, Brandan Wright looks awful, Vlad is awful, Reggie isn’t playing to standards of last year (which I always thought was a ridiculous notion to expect), only Carney is exceeding and even he isn’t exactly a super 6th man. Still Smart can be a lot SMARTER with bench and rotation etc. etc. etc.
With Lee and Lou back, the front court rotation should NOT see Vlad anymore. Just hoping we can turn him into some sort of competent depth (via trade)
Stagger Monta and Curry better. If we are playing a team like Detroit with villanueva and daye at power forward, we can EASILY steal minutes with Carney/1R2L at both forward spots.

why did smart take the early timeout in the 1st quarter (or at least it was announced as a dubs TO to the croud)? Monta was on FIRE!!! Lost his jumper after that…
Why on earth is VladRad starting!!?!!?
but he did really play well in the 3rd (most of the 3rd), I honestly was semi impressed and I wonder how come he’s not used in the middle of the key more often
Monta almost blew the game with that silly, unnecessary and dumb foul in the 4th, that caused him to be out for an additional 3 minutes. As a leader and maybe star player, you just can’t do that!
But happy and thankful to see the win and a made Beans FT!!!!!!!
