Keith Smart Bashing
In response to Spreefor3!!!'s article, "What the Hell is Keith Smart Doing?"
I was going to post a reply, but decided it would be too long and I'll go in depth at my epic frustrations with our head coach.
I broke it up into sections of coaching, in no particular order, and identified problems and possible solutions. If I can do this, you'd think a head coach in the National Basketball Association wouldn't have a problem doing it, either.
Defense
Defensively, we keep getting burned game after game, practically possession after possession, on backdoor cuts. How hard can it possibly be to fix something so idiotic like that? A couple hours of emphasis in practice should be enough to plug the leak. I'm impressed with our defense so far this year, and can't complain about the improvement from last year, but this failure is simply glaring and can help us out too much to be ignored. Smart's getting them to hustle on this end, but he forgot to teach them how to hustle, and how to use their energy efficiently and intelligently.
Offense
Offensively, it has been a complete embarrassment. I'm fine with his decision to terminate the Run & Gun style of play, and run ordinary half-court sets, but what the hell are they "running" out there. The most movement I've seen all season on the offensive end has been 3 players weaving out beyond the arc waiting for someone to make a decisive move. That move would come with the shot clock winding down and a usually difficult, contested jump shot. More often than not, we lazily trot upcourt, make one or two passes, then isolate a certain player and everyone else clears out and stands around. Here lies an even bigger dilemma than lack of movement. Isolations were a powerful element in Don Nelson's system. He was brilliant at exploiting mismatches, setting up players in terrific position to go one on one. It's definitely not the prettiest and most efficient offense available, but it can and has worked. However, I'd like to know who came up with the idea to let Dorell Wright isolate against someone like Rudy Gay. Same goes for everyone on the roster aside from Curry and Ellis. These guys simply are not players who specialize in creating for themselves. Then Keith Smart has them create for themselves against more talented players. The only iso's the Warriors should utilize are with Ellis and Curry, and and then Lee or Biedrins if they're rolling from the post. (By the way, props to Andris for his monstrous effort, it was a beauty.) Basically, our "flex motion offense" has been anything but that. Half the time, we leave our best players (Curry and Ellis) standing around while Rodney Carney's running a pick and roll with Vlad Rad, which is obviously unacceptable and drives us Warrior fans crazy. Our offense this year has been simply atrocious. Defense wins championships, but you can't win if you can't put the ball in the bucket. Smart needs to get smart or get out.
Rotation
We all (should) know Smart's the worst coach at putting in the right guys at the right times. I'm tired of seeing him leaving out Ellis for all of the first quarter and the first few minutes of the second quarter. Monta constantly becomes fatigued and it shows in how his production significantly drops off in the second half and he's been unable to close out games. All out other starters also do not need to be playing 11 minutes in a quarter. He needs to start subbing players in at around the 5 or 4 minute mark of the first/third and Monta/Steph need to get their breathers with 1 or 2 minutes left, and then rest for the first minute or two of the next quarter. I'm not a fan of having Ellis and Curry both out of the game at the same time, but as we get healthier and deeper, it shouldn't be such a horrible problem for the 3 or 4 minutes they'll sit. Aside from that, I was bewildered when neither of them were in the game for almost half of the fourth quarter in a tight ball game! How stupid is Smart? Curry sat out the second half of the third quarter due to foul trouble, and I thought he would play the entire fourth, for sure at least 9 or 10 minutes. Furthermore, when I saw him pulled after a short few minutes of action and only reinserted with two and a half minutes to go, I began fuming. All hope was pretty much lost by then, Ellis was fatigued from over-abuse in the first half, and Curry had no hope of getting in a rhythm while sitting and watching on the bench.
I probably left out a few sections of Keith Smart's futility (his horrible use of timeouts, for one), but the point was clear. If we want any hope of making the playoffs, Smart needs to get his head straight or a change must be made. Before the season started, I listed a number of player transactions I thought would improve the ball club. I stand by those ideas/thoughts (especially trading Ellis while his stock is high, 'cause there ain't no way he and Curry can play together and expect to raise Lacob's/Guber's promised banners in the future), but a great coach is the most necessary plug to vault this team to new levels. Keith Smart appears to not be that coach (to say the least).

Overly harsh
Other than Monta, all the dubs are either inconsistent or just not very good. Curry especially seems inconsistent, it sucks that he rode the pine for so long, but he was not playing well when he was in.
I agree he needs to improve but I think he will, and I think (hope) we are experiencing the lowest point of our season right now.
i beg to differ
i agree that a good portion of the warriors are inconsistent, and that’s because of their talent (or lack thereof), but Stephen Curry had one of his best shooting nights all season yesterday, and his only inexcusable mistake was failing to catch that one pass in the fourth which resulted in a turnover the Grizzlies failed to capitalize on. He was moving his feet well on defense, and playing within the offense to get his points. Monta, on the other hand, didn’t really do anything special in the 4th and he has not been as consistent as you are implying

I have been saying this from day one
People bashed me and defended Smart. Finally people are realizing that he is one of the worst rotation coaches in the league and puts players in position to fail.
He consistently did this last season when he was given opportunities by Nellie to coach. He would make the most perplexing player rotations.
This season has been worse now that he doesn’t have Nellie next to him to give him advise. Our rotations with the Lee Injury should be as follows:
Curry – Bell/Lin
Ellis – Williams
Carney – Vlaad
Wright – Wright
Andris – Gaz
Yes, I have Vlad as a second backup. Yes, vlad is bad, but Smart is putting him in a position to fail even worse than he normally would. Why on earth would you play a bad player like him at PF/C? At least at the 3 he can defend reasonably well.
Also the offensive style we are running with players injured is just plain wrong. Nellie would do the smarter thing and just go run and gun with lots of pick and rolls to take advantage of our small lineup. Even with Lee back, we are still a small lineup and should be playing ‘small ball’ on the offensive side.
Seriously Lacob/Guber, if you guys are listening.
1) Move Smart back to Assistant coach or fire him.
2) Bring in a legit coach like Brian Shaw or JVG. (for those of you that don’t like JVG…realize this…only one of his teams became a sub .500 team)
3) Have riley make some moves with our expiring contracts
3) Watch us win.

His rotations suck. But this team is going to be a close to .500 team. That’s their talent level.

we'd be a lot closer
if he improved his roatations. at this rate, we won’t be much better than last season

You're just experiencing the FDB withdrawal symptoms which blames everything on Coach Keith Smart.
Tsk. Tsk. We’ve only played 17 games and have started off pretty well this season aside from the injuries.
"Go ahead. Make my day."
I have been disappointed with many in game decisions made by our coach. If I were to grade Keith Smart on the season thus far: B.
Here’s why:
The players buy into what he’s doing. Even through this losing streak, team chemistry seems high. Monta had everyone over for thanksgiving dinner, they all went out together on Monta’s birthday, and the phrase ‘family’ is used by players and coaches to an almost corny level.
That is huge. Team chemistry is the stuff that champions are made of, best example of this being this year’s SFGiants squad.
He is also trying to impliment a new system, with relatively new players, or at least players who have litlle to no experience playing together.
Big men, and the defense and rebounding they provide are now a huge part of what we do. DLee, Udoh, and Lou being out for so long is tough, it completely disallows us from accomplishing what we are trying to do with success.
So although we’re currently 7-9, I still think that is legit considering the circumstances, and there have been far less blowout losses than there should be.
Yes I think there was a game or 2 that could’ve gone our way given certain decisions, but that’s why I give him a B not an A.
This offense is a terrible fit.
Let me get this straight. You have a team full of super fast, undersized players, and one skinny center, and you want to run Jerry Sloan’s 5MPH offense?
Guess what! There was a reason Nelson ran the ball like crazy and used whacky lineups: He had a team full of young kids and no size. While the roster may have changed a lot, and a few more bigs will be available by January, this team still has essentially the same problem. Yes, they are creating more turnovers and rebounding better, but at the rate they turn the ball over they need to run the ball more!
How many well executed fast-breaks have we seen this year involving more than one player? How many have we seen with three? Surely it was all much simpler with the likes of Baron and Jack, but Curry et. al. need to be able to execute this more often. That deosn’t necessarily mean jacking up tons of early threes, a la Nelson, but for God’s sake run the ball. Averaging well under 100pts on the road would be fine if we had a mid-90s Tim Duncan type to run our offense through, but we don’t. Lee is not that guy, at all.
This team is not going to suddenly become grind-it-out, half-court-centric, 90-or-less points allowed kind of team. They’re going to give up well over 100 points a night, and if they want to win more consistently that means they must get more possessions. Obviously this would be helped by more depth, since Curry and Ellis can’t do it all, and behind them are the likes of Lin and Carney, although Reggie can get on a hot streak. Udoh and Amundson, however, would not seem to be an answer on the offensive end. Sure, they might be able to help push our points allowed to the low 100s, but I still say we need more offense. The question is, with an already thin roster, and not much to offer beyond a terrible B.Wright and some expiring contracts, where does it come from? The draft is a long ways away, and our lottery prospects do not project to be that great next year. As far as free agency, who’s out there? The list gets very short after Carmelo. Aging J-Rich anyone?

yeah, and that's not the kind of team I want the Warriors to become!
One of the reasons the Dubs have such a strong fan base is that they are fun to watch!
Don’t get me wrong, I would like to see the playoffs regularly, but let’’s not turn this team into a snore-fest.
We are way…WAY…far away from being a title contender, so let’s just loosen it up, have some fun, and shoot for the playoffs.
We lost a lot of depth this offseason, and still need one or two more starters to really make us legit threat.
Finally, while I don’t love Smart’s rotations, I still think the team is better under him than it would have been under Nellie…Give Smart a chance (with a healthy lineup)!
I am really suprised that people are already calling for his head! At least give him till the all-star break guys!!

I understand the complaint about boring basketball ...
… but I don’t understand the criticism that somehow that’s what’s happening here.
We’re still an uptempo team. We still run. We still play a fluid offense. Heck, I think it’s a MORE exciting offense because it’s less predictable, and the ball moves better.
Running plays?
It’s hard to know why Smart is not running more plays with the offense. Could it actually be the player’s fault for not learning within a training camp’s period of time? Do Lin, Brandan, Reggie, Curry, and Andris know where to be in a set offense as complicated as Sloan’s? I’m not so sure they do. It’s one thing to introduce a playbook, it’s another for your players to execute it. It’s also another to assume teaching new principles of such total opposites in less than a month’s time is an easy task…just saying…
Overall this is a pretty frustrating post
you’re displeased with the defense-the back-door cuts. How about the fact that the Warriors are allowing less points and for the first time they’re all actually staying back to protect the basket and swoop up defensive rebounds?
you’re displeased with the offense. How about the fact that the ball is moving better and the team is taking higher-percentage shots?
you’re displeased with the rotations. How about the fact that Nelly right now would not be playing Biedrins and Lee together because neither strokes the three? How about the fact this team finally has stars that can enter the final five minutes of the game with relatively fresh legs?
There’s always something to criticize, but this is a much improved basketball TEAM. Smart has to take some credit for that.
With Nelly as coach right now, you can cut the Warriors’ current win total in half.
Well..
The back-door cuts frustrate me because i feel it’s something that can easily be fixed and would improve our defense even more. You must’ve missed this sentence: “I’m impressed with our defense so far this year, and can’t complain about the improvement from last year, but this failure is simply glaring and can help us out too much to be ignored.”
Offensively, are you sure you’re watching the same Warriors I am? The half-court offense has looked worse than last year (where at least the ball was always in the hands of someone reliable to create for themselves or others). There’s no ball movement, man movement, and the only points we get come from pure skill by our guards being able to initiate effectively. Last year, we were so high-scoring cuz we ran a lot, but we don’t even do that a lot this year, so our offense has been very sub-par.
As for the rotations, if Nelly finally had a power forward with all star credentials such as Lee, he wouldn’t need to go small. And Monta Ellis is NEVER fresh in the 4th quarter, Lee hadn’t played in almost 3 weeks and he plays 42 minutes and was absolutely exhausted by the end. The only star who was fresh to finish was Curry, who Smart had to take out due to foul trouble.
I never said we shouldn’t have fired Don Nelson, but Keith Smart is definitely not the answer.

Actually, Lee insisted on flying out to play this game, because he realized the only way to regain his conditioning was by playing. (he was originally going to sit out the whole trip and just rejoin the team when they got back to the Bay)
I bet you Lee wouldn’t complain about too many minutes.

It is clear and simple. We need bigs we can rebounds
When Lee were out, we were 1-7. When Curry were out, we were 1-1. Offense is not the issue. What we really need is having our PF and C wins the rebounding battle. This is why we can’t place Ramen in PF because he cannot rebound, at all. When we have Lee and Bean on the floor, our amazing back court does not have to worry about helping out to double team as much. Plus, D Wright gets more open 3s.
This is why Adrien is a better PF backup then Ramen.

Even with the losing streak, we're one game out of the 8th seed.
You’re gripping bad. LOL.
"Go ahead. Make my day."
Steffun4tw in everything you said is completely right. The warriors are standing around as if they are in practice learning a play from the coach. And the coach has this attitude that his nuturing a few kids so they can fly from the nest. And defense is just foul the guy and let them get a three point play. WHAT THE HELL? K. Smart tries so hard to play everybody. WHY?! you just keep on putting players out there to keep the minutes of playing time in check but not TRYING TO WIN! So you have all three high scorers (ellis, curry, and lee) sitting out while you let like J. Lin who always looks lost and Vlad who just plays as if he doesn’t give a crap. The bulls alway left one of jordan, pippen or rodman on the court. Jordan with rebounders. Rodman with 3 point scorers. Pippen with a little of both. The lakers leave either kobe or gasol in. Why not the warriors? Can’t they even out the team they have out on the court? Monte with bell. then curry with Lin. WHY BOTH MONTE AND CURRY SITTING? And also D. Wright. He can’t play anything except shoot the three. He can’t drive to the basket or hit a jumper or play defense or rebound or OHMYGOOOOOD! JEEEZ! He needs to be the sixth man not Reggie. Reggie can do it all and is faster and can dribble. You don’t see him get picked all the time like D. Wright who can’t dribble to save his life. And it’s like the warriors are forbidden to run the court because it might look like Nellie ball so instead of pushing it they just wanna set up the play everytime. IT’S NOT WORKING KSMART! Maybe if you try a mix of both then it would be harder to zero in on the few offensive plays like ISOLATE MONTE ANDLET HIM DEAL WITH IT. that can only go so far. Too much.
