Keith Smart
On Monta Ellis:
"I said it at shootaround before the game, I don’t know what kind of game he is going to have. I want him to be the aggressive guy at first, and then if the flow takes him another way, he will read that. I felt that we needed a better pickup tonight, because we were limited and he was able to do that. Once again, a young man playing at a great level the whole training camp, preseason as well as the start of the regular season. He’s doing a great job."

On Dorell Wright:
"He’s in new territory now because he gets the chance to have a bit more freedom to make plays, and he’s learning how to do that within the framework of what we are trying to do. I still like the way he tries to defend, I still like the way he tries to set the tone and guard people. Rudy Gay made some incredible shots tonight and he had a hand in his face contesting his shots all the way through."

On The High Volume of Three Pointers Taken:
"If you look at how the threes are being taken, they are not being taken by coming down and pulling up and shooting. It’s coming off of dribble penetration. And dribble penetration brings the defenses in and then you've got to take those shots."
Monta Ellis
On Tonight's Game:
"We scrapped to the end. We got the win. Dorell played great tonight. Reggie, D. Lee, Andris, I mean pretty much everyone that came off the bench played well. That’s what we needed. We’re missing Stephen tonight and guys stepped up where we needed them tonight."

On Sitting During The First Part Of The Third Quarter:
"I wanted to be in there bad but at the same time it was coaches’ decision. He didn’t rush me so I just had to wait because I knew he was going to call me again. So I just had to wait until I got back into the game."
Dorell Wright
On Tonight's Game:
"I’m just taking comfort jumpers, things I work on everyday. The big guys and Monta (Ellis), you know those guys attract a lot of attention so they make it easy for me. I’m just taking game shots, practice shots and trying to be efficient."

It sure seemed like the battle of the defenses

They weren’t giving us anything easy inside. Conversely, we did a lot of good work stopping them as well. It felt like a battle of which defense would give up first.

Only concern,
Worried about all the settling for threes – this isn’t Nellie ball – Smart should have demanded more drives to the hoop in the third quarter.

Monta really is playing like an all-star. This game, definitely he played like a superstar. He nearly had a triple double. Just a beast tonight.

by Naticus on Nov 4, 2010 3:10 AM PDT up reply actions

Worried about all the settling for threes

Depends what you mean by “settling.” Most of the perennially successful teams in the league launch a whole ton of threes. LAL, Orlando, Phoenix, Cleveland, and SA, e.g., were all among the Top 11 in the league in 3fga. Indeed, esteemed GSoMer onlxn has posited that just launching a ton of threes, irrespective of how many you make, tends to correlate loosely with winning. Particularly in a game like last night’s, in which the Memphis D was clogging the middle, bombing from 3 is a pretty essential ingredient to winning. I’d also note that most of the Ws’ threes last night seemed to come within the flow of the offense (after drive-and-kicks, e.g.)

Given the relative slackness of the Memphis perimeter D last night, I think the presence of Curry might have allowed the Ws to win this game by 20 or 30 (that is, assuming the presence of Curry wouldn’t have forced them to alter their defense slightly).

There will be no extra point!

by Sleepy Freud on Nov 4, 2010 7:50 AM PDT up reply actions

in this specific context it looked like Nellie ball

I have no problem with us taking a lot of threes because we have the guys who can make them. But when we can’t get to the line when the other team is getting there a lot, and when the long range jumper isn’t falling, then that is a time to stip “settling” and drive the lane and try to get foul calls. When Monta returned he did just that and we regained our big lead. But for a long spell in the third it seemed like the team was “settling” instead of forcing the refs to make calls, putting pressure on the defense, etc. Luckily, they were bricking too at that time, but against a better team spells of regression like the one we had in the third might end up costing us a game.

by mcastro831 on Nov 4, 2010 7:35 AM PDT via mobile reply actions

FACT: The Warriors are 3-1. The Raiders are 4-4. Not huge sample sizes from which to draw conclusions.

I think it’s been pretty clear for a while that the Warriors are much improved this season. Still, I’d like to see them beat up on some bad/mediocre teams on the road. This upcoming stretch of road games against mostly lousy teams should be an interesting test.

by Sleepy Freud on Nov 4, 2010 7:58 AM PDT up reply actions

Well 4-4 in a 16 game season isn't really small sample size

Thats half the games……….

Well, sure: if the goal is simply to show that either team can beat bad teams, a sample size of one game is sufficient. Whether or not either can be expected to do so consistently, at home and on the road, remains a question. I haven’t watched the Raiders enough (read: at all) to say one way or the other, but for the Ws I think four games isn’t a big enough of a sample size from which to be drawing broad conclusions.

We can beat bad teams on the 2nd game of b2b at home.

We were 18-23 or something at home last year. We are good at home. Let’s win some road games before we claim any improvement.

We have played 3 home games and one road game.

Our 3 home games were against teams on the 2nd game of a b2b.

We did not win a road game in preseason either. Still way too small a sample size to claim improvement.

The San Francisco 49ers, inventing new ways to lose every week!

by Badly Browned on Nov 4, 2010 7:41 PM PDT up reply actions

Granted it is a small sample size

But it is obvious that we are playing better defense and rebounding better than last year. In addition, the play of Lee and D.Wright is much improved over guys who played our forward spots last season.

by tjmax on Nov 5, 2010 7:51 AM PDT up reply actions

Was at the game last night....

Monta of course got all the praise from the crowd, and rightfully so. At the end of the game he ws just making ridiculous shots…. But David Lee, I think I have a man crush. I turned to my sister and dad and said he was amazing, and both were kind of confused, not noticing what he did.. 16 rebounds, unselfish play, in short without Lee this is a game we lose like last year.

I’m beginning to believe, If we continue to outrebound teams we’ll win because there is no shortage of offensive firepower. Not surprising Warriors have outrebounded 3 out of 4 opponents and won 3 out of 4 games.

My only criticism all game. Man were we UGLY without Monta in. No Monta AND no Curry is D-league caliber ballhandling.

I firmly stand by my point, last year with Randolph and Maggette @ PF we lose last nights game, because we don’t rebound as well. Monta was spectacular to wage but at same wasn’t exactly 18-24 like v. Houston

Not exactly, but in scoring 39 on only 26 fga, with 9 dimes, 8 boards, 3 steals and only 4 tov, he may have done more to help the team win.

There will be no extra point!

by Sleepy Freud on Nov 4, 2010 11:19 AM PDT up reply actions

Question for Jae and other Stat-heads....

Does anyone know the percentage of times team with most rebounds wins? I imagine it’s around 75% or above. Of course there are exceptions, and we all know the old add-ages about rebounding, but I’m curious actual percentage…

by tafkasam on Nov 4, 2010 8:04 AM PDT reply actions

the problem with that kind of analysis

is that rebounding teams tend to be more efficient scoring teams as well, so you’d almost certainly be conflating those two factors.

Having said that, rebounding is very, very important and most certainly correlated with winning. Read Berri’s “Wages of Wins” or Dean Oliver’s “Basketball on Paper”, if you haven’t already.

by Evanz on Nov 4, 2010 8:18 AM PDT up reply actions

There is a large coorelary

Because lack of defensive rebounding gives up offensive rebounding, aka much more efficient scoring. And if you are a great offensive rebounding team it’ll likely bump up your efficiency. See people want to overrate scoring efficiency in a macro context, when all that matters is your efficiency v. your DIRECT opponent. You may not be the most efficient team, but if you play good D and are excellent rebounders and keep your opponents efficiency lower, it doesn’t much matter. But rebounding margin, that’s something you can compare to see.

Eitherway, I have read Berri and it’s good. I’m just curious on a very raw, simplistic level, what percentage of time, the team who has the most rebounds wins.

by tafkasam on Nov 4, 2010 9:22 AM PDT up reply actions

I’m just curious on a very raw, simplistic level, what percentage of time, the team who has the most rebounds wins.

If you go thru the box scores for about 100 random games and work it out you’ll probably get a pretty close estimate? Might be interesting to do it for 100 games last year versus 100 games from a decade ago to see if there’s any difference?

Lights please, lights please, turn off the lights.

Is that The Raiders are finally able to whoop on bad teams (Denver and Seattle). And now we’re 4-4 and only a game back of the division leaders Chiefs (whom we play next week). Much like the Warriors. We beat the grizz and clips, and we were able to win vs a good team in Houston. Its a good sign to see, it means we can compete.

But yeah, I’m hoping we can go at least 2-2 on this road swing. But I’m hoping for 3-1. This trip is gonna speak volumes. Playing bad teams on the road with curry back. (Oh god! Please!)

Thanks for the good work, man.

The Golden Glow is the only way to reach the upper level.

Free throws were the key to the game.

W’s outshot the Grizz from the free throw line, and in the process got M Gasol and DArthur into foul trouble. Their bench bigs were nothing in comparison.

It was not the flashy plays or hot 3 point shooting. It’s about attacking the rim and getting to the freebie line. That’s the difference and that is something Coach Smart needs to encourage more.
Our shooting is hot and cold. But we can be consistent in attacking the paint.

It’s also about three point shooting, especially when the D packs it in the way Memphis did last night. We had a 15 point edge on them from 3, by virtue of taking 30 3fga and making 13 of them. That’s a very good %, but not that far off what we should normally expect from 3, especially on nights when Curry’s playing.

Personally, I’m glad Smart doesn’t seem to be overplaying the “take it to the rim” mantra. Last year the three best teams in the NBA during the regular season (Orlando, Cle and LAL) were #1, #3 and #10 in the league in threes attempted. As long as it’s within the flow of the offense (as I think it has been mostly this season) the three is always going to be a necessary part of our attack.

There will be no extra point!

It’s OK, Shells. The day you become an old, anal retentive grammar nazi like me, I’ll start to worry… ;-)

Little late

Just watched Lee’s interview; “If I could just make a lay-up everything will be alright”

Haha, Lee is a natural interviewee.
