Keith Smart
On Manu Ginobili:
"He’s been playing that way all year. He’s been playing at a very high level. Getting to the basket, shooting the three and that guy can pull up for a three as well as get to the rim, he’s going to be a tough cover. Then he understands how to cut hard, really cut hard, to force a defense to react to him. He just understands how to play the game, play at a very high rate and that’s why he’s having success."

On The Spurs 15-2 Start:
"They’ve got guys on that team that have been through the wars. I think the one key is that all those guys have been home this summer. They didn’t have national team commitments or things like that and they could focus on getting their bodies together and getting proper rest to get off to the fast start. But they’re good. They’ve been there and they understand how to play." On The Warriors Effort: "I thought we were a little stagnant here and there. I think they’ve (Spurs) done what they’ve done the last couple of years and that’s invite us to take the jumpshot and say we are going to live with you shooting the jumpshot."
Dorell Wright
On The Spurs:
"They play together and buy into the system. Those guys have been playing with each other for a few years now, so they know each other. You can learn something from them as far as the defensive end on how they help and they listen to their coach. You can see it pays off."

"We need to continue to play together and stay together and play hard. If we do all those things we could steal a couple of games that people don’t think we can win."
Stephen Curry
On Tonight's Game:
"You have to play smart and make minimal mistakes because they are going to capitalize. They run their offense so well and have played with each other for so long that they know where to be offensively. When you take out their first option they have their spacing so great that everyone is in the right spot and they move that ball where somebody is going to make a play. Defensively you have to be a step ahead with all five guys."

"I think they are the most efficient team we have seen so far. They run their offensive sets so well. You know it’s coming but you still have trouble being one step ahead to defend it. Their veterans are smart and are going to run it to perfection. But when you get a stop you have to get the rebound."

Notes

- Udoh is cleared to increase is activity level, but there's no timetable on his return date yet.
- David Lee in the post game interview says he's still regaining his strength and wind. He said his elbow is still bleeding.

Its not that he left…its how he left. I was a Lebron fanboy since he was in high school untill this last year. No more. His act is warped. He may be the best individual player in the NBA but Its looking like he is ego toxic to teams and coaches. The king “brand” is getting old.

by Only In Fairfax on Nov 30, 2010 11:29 PM PST up reply actions

disagree

say what you want about kobe but he has worked for everything he has earned. I could be very wrong but LBJ comes off as if he believes everything was given to him. Kobe may be a jackass but I respect his drive

by AHR on Dec 1, 2010 12:29 AM PST up reply actions

I'm just curious...when people say Kobe has an unmatched passion to win, or is the hardest worker in the NBA,

why don’t people just realize that’s complete BS? He’s definitely not the hardest worker in the NBA. The hardest worker goes to someone who plays defense consistently, and rebounds the ball very well. Kobe rebounds well, but not great. So thats just more media hype up. And what is his drive? Screaming at the ref’s when he doesn’t get a call?

by GovernorStephCurry on Dec 1, 2010 7:51 AM PST up reply actions

just realize that’s complete BS

Well how do you know he doesn’t? Some people naturally rebound so don’t have to work too much at it. The drive is in his overall emotion, the look on his face in crunchtime

I’ve always considered someone who’s “hard-working” to be someone that is focused on getting better, and constantly working towards it. You can definitely see how much better Kobe has gotten since he’s been in the league. As much as I dislike Kobe as a person, I respect how he has progressed as a basketball player and also can see him being a very effective player for a long time…versus someone that loses their edge once they’ve lost their athleticism.

+1

This is what I’m getting at.
Obviously its impossible for us to know how much Kobe and Lebron put into their games respectively. But, from what little is visible, Kobe comes off as someone who is dedicated to improving his game, and winning at all costs. This backfires as his inflated ego sometimes causes him to be a detriment when he thinks he can hit any shot, but the drive is there and it makes me respect him.
Lebron on the other hand appears to consider himself gods gift to basketball. From the moment he came int the league, in part because people fed into this, it appeared that he personally felt that he was destined for greatness based on his natural talent alone (don’t get me wrong he is the most physically gifted player in the NBA).
Kobe wants to make himself into a basketball god, Lebron thinks he is a basketball god, and thats why as much as I dislike Kobe i’d rather see him win.
Now if Lebron had Kobe’s mentality I think he would be far and away considered the best player in the NBA as there would be no room for argument.
Again though our views are very flawed by what little we actually see, but thats not going to stop me from forming an opinion that could in the end be very wrong.

because everyone in the NBA works very very hard

like, everyone at the top of the league has an A work ethic. They all want to win. There are guys of every talent level that work just as much.

Yeah, and there are a lot of 3rd tier guys that are good but never get any better. There are also guys like Morrow who is usually the hardest worker on his team even though he is just a rotation type player.
I don’t know if you’ve read anything about Westbrook, but his work ethic has impressed me at least as much as Durant’s or Kobe’s.

It coulda been me, oh yeah it coulda been me.

by Reverend_Randy on Dec 1, 2010 11:23 PM PST up reply actions

Eh. I think there are a lot of guys who never really work that hard.

Baron Davis comes to mind. Shaq famously took offseasons off.

I suspect that there are a lot of people who get their first paycheck, and, feeling set for life, basically ask themselves how little they have to do to keep getting that paycheck. Maybe not consciously, but you see that in every other walk of life so it seems strange to think that it wouldn’t happen in the NBA, too.

They call the greatest athlete in their town's history a quitter?

They call a man a quitter when he gets 21 rebounds in a deciding game against the Celtics!? That’s just ridiculous on so many levels, and for that i’m glad he left them. Bunch of sore losers, have fun with your 34-47 Mo William’s led Cavs. They don’t quit!!

And get a foul?

He was in no position to defend that.

Also, ESPN’s article on the game was totally biased. RJ “appeared” to land on David Lee and Lee “retaliated” by “shoving” RJ.

No way that series should have been a double technical. If David Lee didn’t say anything to RJ he would have looked like a wuss, but then RJ was the one who shoved him. RJ started it, then tried to start it again.

Whatever, I’m just mad about the whole night of shit calls….

I was hoping Lee would get a punch in

…but not with the injured arm. Intentional or not, dude rode you like a horse. on TV.

Is it just me, or was there more flow on offense (pick n rolls, etc..) with Nellie coaching?
Steph, despite a great offensive performance, looked like he was forcing plays and couldn’t make a pass.

by DubCurse on Nov 30, 2010 11:54 PM PST reply actions

There's more flow because there's less emphasis on Defense

Smart’s system is a few steps slower than Nelson’s. But it’s a bit more disciplined in other aspects outside of Offense.

"I tell him straight, 'If you're going to lead, you have to be the first to practice. You have to come in, get your work down and be prepared for practice,' " assistant coach Keith Smart said. There’s more flow because there’s less emphasis on Defense

i don’t really buy this statement. Monta flatly stated that there was just as much emphasis the last two years as there has been this year. Smart was also the defensive coordinator last year and was allowed to run practices.

plus, if you watched the Spurs telecast, Elliot was pointing out a lot of basic things on defense that the dubs weren’t doing.
