Keith Smart
On Winning A Low-Scoring Game:
"Like I saw all the time, at the end of the year the bottom line is going to be did you win or did you lose? It was good that we won a close game. It got tight, and we made some plays. But I was proud because we couldn’t make a shot, could not make shot. Yet we were up by one point at halftime. Our defense was really engaged to take away paint scores from this basketball team (Utah Jazz). I just thought the way we rebounded, and you have to rebound against this team to have a chance because if you don’t they will eat you alive on the glass. I thought the way our two big guys have done it thus far this year, they rebound the basketball."

On The Team's Defense:
"We have a saying D.T.W. Defense travels well … We weren’t down by 10, 15 points. Our defense kept us close. At some point somebody is going to make a shot, we’ll get to the foul line and that’s what we did Opening Night. And we knew that was going to be a high scoring game without Yao Ming, and yet to come back in this game and know we would have to defend the paint and if we did that we knew we would have a chance to win the game and we did that."

9:11 min: Keith Smart at the podium
Monta Ellis
On The Upcoming Road Trip:
"This is going to be our biggest test right here when we go on the road. We have five games in seven days so it’s a big test for us. It’s the first time we’re going on a road trip and there are some winnable games. We just have to play like we did tonight. Also continue to play hard as a team with scrappy defense and come out with a successful road trip."

On Coach Smart Emphasizing Defense:
"We have been focused on defense for the past few years. It’s just that we have more guys that feed into it and guys that are willing to play defense. Coach continues to tell us to play defense, even though our offense wasn’t going well tonight we stuck around with our defense. At the end of the game we made shots and made plays and won the game."
Andris Biedrins
On Winning With Defense:
"I think it says a lot. That’s what we’ve been practicing since training camp. It’s finally starting to pay off. Like coach said at half time we were only shooting 32 percent but we were up one point and it was due to our defense. Defense would get us the lead. I thought everybody enjoyed that. We could win with our (defense) because it was not our night for our shots to go down."

On Playing Alongside David Lee:
"It’s been real easy since training camp to play with each other. We understand our roles on offense and defense. We will always help each other. It really feels like we have been playing with each other for a long time. He makes my job easier."

Notes

- Monta said that the coaching staff has been focused on defense for the past few seasons. The difference is now we have guys who are willing to play defense.
- From the podium interview, Smart said he had an agreement with the players that whenever he yells at somebody, it's not personal.

What's next?

- Road trip! Our first road trip of the season is a tough one. Five games in seven days, with 2 back-to-back pairs of games, will be a really good road test. Next game's on Sunday afternoon.

How many boards did Biedrins end up with? Was it 20 or 21? That’s why he gets my vote.

20 boards, zero turnovers, plus some very, very tough D, plus one restaurant quality post move to the hole v. Elson (though he didn’t convert the and-one). He definitely gets my vote.

I voted for him, too. I almost voted for Ellis, as he was awesome with 6 steals (or 7?) and 23 points. But twenty boards can’t be ignored.

Bean's boards

Was a great example of why great rebounding is also part of good defense. It limited the Jazz chances for 2nd chance points, their calling card, and instead we were the team getting those put backs

by tjmax on Nov 5, 2010 10:44 PM PDT reply actions

Milsap’s strength is offensive rebounding, which also makes him an efficient scorer. Lee and more so Biedrins took that away. Even with taking that, Milsap was still +2 for the game.

Yes voted for Elson!

"I tell him straight, 'If you're going to lead, you have to be the first to practice. You have to come in, get your work down and be prepared for practice,' " assistant coach Keith Smart said. "He needs to figure out why he is having stomach problems and he's got to watch how LeBron (James), Kobe (Bryant) and D-Wade (Dwyane Wade) work. He needs to mimic that if he wants his teammates to speak volumes about him." -Keith Smart on Motna Ellis

Love it.

This is encouraging. The cliche is: when you’re a good team, you can win in a lot of ways. The truth behind that cliche is: when you can play defense well and limit opponent eFG%, you can survive a lot of miscues. The Warriors played defense tonight like a playoff team. I was (and still am) thoroughly impressed.

Yeah...

I think he’s a perfectly serviceable big body to fill in for Andris for about ten minutes a game. I’d rather have Amundson healthy, but he’ll do for now. He’s impressed me, and exceeded my expectations so far. I’ve enjoyed his hustle, and his aggressive D, but his rebounding will have to pick up, and he’ll need to get his fouls down, but I don’t see any reason to think he can’t do those things.

No question. Vlad went up for a mid-range jumper, and my knee-jerk comment was, “Miss.” He did. He is sucking it up again. I thought he was pretty good at the beginning, when he first got here. Then he sucked. They chalked it up to injury, but now I think he just sucks. He’s in a constant slump.

Where’s the dedication? He played such horrible defense that Al Jefferson couldn’t contain himself from sucking. He fouled out with 3 fouls. What a horrible player, and his 20 rebounds were meaningless and he just stole them away from our only “big man” David Lee!

But David (Lee) is always behind me and he keeps talking, saying ‘don’t worry about your man, I got you.’"

Curry lifted the Warriors’ struggling offense down the stretch. He nailed a pull-up jumper at the 2:35 mark to break a 72-all tie. He then came up with a steal and went coast-to-coast, spinning away from Kirilenko for a scoop layup and a foul. His free throw put the Warriors up 77-72 with 2:11 left in the game.
Moments later, it was small forward Dorell Wright hustling and coming up with a loose ball with 1:15 left in the game, which led to an Ellis jumper for a 79-74 advantage with 54.8 seconds left.
Still, after a layup by Jefferson, the Warriors found themselves needing one more basket. And guess how they got it? A putback by Lee.

(From Marcus Thompson recap) And some more. I was so freakin’ pumped at Curry’s steal and coast to coast. I’ve never been that excited at any sporting event ever. Ellis and Lee’s contributions at the end were freakin’ awesome as well. So much fun at the game!!

I thought his handling looked pretty shaky close up (I was in the third row). He’s not that quick with the ball in his hands, honestly. He’s very long, and it takes a lot of strength and explosiveness to make up for the leverage issues, high center of gravity and such. He lacks that somewhat, although, as I said, his ability to anticipate and/or his basketball IQ really are impressive.

GSoM neglecting defense :D

Al and Millsap hit the boards hard as well. Not as hard as Warriors but still.

I really think getting DWill to turn it over 8 times is your win there. 5 to 6 turnovers he doesn’t often commit. 10 easy points you don’t score. In a game where shooting is awful you have to consider this.

by tafkasam on Nov 6, 2010 11:20 AM PDT up reply actions

5 to 6 turnovers he doesn’t often commit.

Well, 16 times last season. And 4 tov another 21 times. An average of 3.3. You can’t expect 8, but you should probably shoot for 4 or 5 if you’re a ballhawking team like the Warriors.

On a side note … did anyone watch the Utah broadcast and see the comical poll question “who’s the second best PG in the NBA?” The announcers explained, in a totally earnest tone, “we know Deron is #1, but who’s #2??” LOL. (Strangely, Rondo beat Paul handily in the poll).

Not sure if the Jazz announcers are homers or cretins or both but newsflash: Paul is #1, and it ain’t close. Rondo, Kidd, Nash, Billups and DWill can duke it out for #2 — my vote goes to Rondo. DWill may secure #3 as the other guys age, but then Rose, Westbrook, Curry, Wall, Holiday and co. are all coming on fast…

by Sleepy Freud on Nov 6, 2010 12:16 PM PDT up reply actions

Point guards rebounding is nice, but if you’re not great at it, I can live with it. You can always have other people on the team to take care of most of that.

The Golden Glow is the only way to reach the upper level.

by Naticus on Nov 6, 2010 12:19 PM PDT up reply actions

A rebound from a guard counts just as much as one from a big man. Upgrading (?) from Deron to Rondo gets your team nearly 2 more rebounds per 36 — about the same as the upgrading from, say, Zach Randolph to Dwight Howard.

If rebounding is a non-issue, what’s so special about Deron’s size advantage?

There will be no extra point!

by Sleepy Freud on Nov 6, 2010 12:33 PM PDT up reply actions

I didn’t say it’s a non-issue, but it’s not hard to make up for. Plus, if you’re playing one one of the best rebounding teams, it’s even less of a factor. Will Rondo necessarily get you 2 more rebounds a game? Because if Rondo doesn’t get it, there’s a good chance another Celtic will, isn’t there? It’s not a 100% that the opponent will get it, if Rondo doesn’t.

Deron’s size advantage is good for defense in general, of course. He’s a more versatile defender, able to defend 1’s and 2’s. Who, for example, is going to post up on him? How effective will push offs be against him, as opposed to a lighter opponent?

On offense, who is going to push him around? Who can he not post up on, if he chooses? Deep in the playoffs, who can plow through physical defenses better? There are a lot of advantage to being as big and strong as D. Will is.

The Golden Glow is the only way to reach the upper level.

by Naticus on Nov 6, 2010 12:38 PM PDT up reply actions

I buy some of your points about the advantages of size, but your point about “making up for” a teammate’s poor rebounding is pretty much nonsense, imo. Why did Riley make such a point of getting a bona fide rebounding beast at PF instead of Maggs/Tolliver/Wright? Why didn’t we just ask the other players to “make up” for the 2-3 rebound shortfall?

DWill’s mediocre rebounding is what it is. If it were better, he’d help his team win more. It’s one of the reasons he’s nowhere close to as good as Paul, and possibly not as good as Rondo (though it would be nice if Rondo learned to shoot just a little).

Deron’s also not as efficient a scorer as Paul, or as good at taking care of the ball, or nearly as good at forcing steals. Basically, to say Deron is the best PG in the league — or even worse, to assume it, like those Jazz announcers — is totally wack.

It’s different with a rebounding big. They’re the ones getting the defensive rebounds right next to the basket, the ones that require muscle and height. Guards will get rebounds that go astray more. In my opinion, those rebounds can be made up for. You get diminishing returns from good rebounders, as has been pointed out in the past.

On offense, it’s Paul every day of the week. But in some circumstances, I’d say having Daron might be to your advantage, depending on the match up.

I was surprised also.

When the poll was playing, I actually blanked out & was thinking who could be ranked #1 if Chris Paul is an option. Then I see Paul isn’t even considered the second best PG according to their list & realized Jazz fans are not as sane as I thought.

by srsrs on Nov 6, 2010 5:03 PM PDT up reply actions

LOL I was watching that stream at that time but instead my already low opinion of Jazz fans was just confirmed. Not that they are necessarily bad people or whatever, but c’mon…seriously? Homer much?

Having the poll in itself is ridiculous, but then to vote Rondo ahead of Paul by a big margin? I just hope that was a bunch of idiot kids texting in votes and not real Jazz fans. Harpring seemed to kind of disagree with it and said to “consider how good Chris Paul would be in Boston” so I’m hoping that maybe a lot of Jazz fans do know what’s up. But you don’t really have to “consider how good Chris Paul would be in Boston” you just have to watch him play.

The one thing I haven't read about

was why Keith Smart pulled Biedrins out early in the 3rd, and then subbed him back in a few minutes later.

Felbot gave an alternatve answer to this question

But there was one thing that Keith Smart did in this game that pleased me enormously. It was when he removed Andris Biedrins from the game a scant minute into the third quarter, in order to take care of business. And at 10:25, on the Warriors first possession after his insertion, Dan Gadzuric took care of business. He ran to the free throw line and intentionally flattened Raja Bell. Oh yes he did. And then Andris Biedrins came back in.

Thank you, Keith Smart.

By the way, I strongly disagree with people picking Curry over Biedrins and Monta. Monta, for example, had excellent defense against a much tougher defensive assignment in D. Will. D. Will had 8 TO’s, while Monta had 7 steals. He also had 4 rebounds to Curry’s 1. While Curry was awesome in the 4th, and that was incredibly exciting, we wouldn’t have been in the game at all if it wasn’t for Monta. He did so much work. Biedrins, of course, played with a huge heart, pulling down 20 boards. Incredible game for all three, though. Such a great game.

Just saw as many highlights...

….as i could of this game since i didn’t watch/go tonight.

And can someone who saw it, or preferably was there, tell me their impression on Coach Smart’s getting into Lee’s ear? What was that about?

From not seeing the game and knowing for sure, i really liked seeing Smart feel his coaching oats right there. I’m guessing it was defensive related with Lee.

And from the other games, i’ve liked Smart’s sub patterns. He’s not stubbornly sticking with guys because they’re “his guys,” he’s going by need (how much starters are struggling or in foul trouble, or just not matching up,) and he’s going by hot hands staying in. Nothing worse than a formulaic coach, and Smart seems not to be that. Good thing.

I think it’s really important for a new coach to be able to yell at players. As they know, it’s not personal (and Keith Smart is such a nice person off the sideline you have to know that.) Smart has to establish being his own man/coach early on, and even if it’s just public perception, it’s good. I’m fairly sure Lee understands and is cool with it.

by supersugarCrisp on Nov 6, 2010 1:04 AM PDT reply actions

I think Keith Smart yelled at him

for not making his shots, or maybe not running back or something like that. David Lee yelled back at him too, possibly saying something like “I was fouled”. That’s the best guess I have based on what I’ve read. Whatever it was, both Smart and Lee knows it wasn’t personal.

by Badly Browned on Nov 6, 2010 1:36 AM PDT up reply actions

You know, looking at the highlights by gumbyorpokey right now

I have a feeling it was more of a mistake on the defensive end. Keith Smart didn’t get up and yell until David Lee left Jefferson in the midpaint to help Gadz guarding Millsap under the basket. That gave Millsap an easy pass to Jefferson for a midpaint floater.

My guess is that Lee was NOT supposed to leave Jefferson and was NOT supposed to help on Millsap. The fact that Keith Smart hopped up so mad and called timeout suggests that Lee made this or similar mistake several times, or that the instructions were so clear and straight forward, that Lee’s mistake was blatantly obvious. This makes more sense to me because the alternative explanation is that Smart got upset at Lee over just one mistake, and that doesn’t fit what I think I know of Smart’s personality.

by IQofaWarrior on Nov 6, 2010 1:55 AM PDT up reply actions

i think what made smart angry

was that lee’s disappointment with the no call affected his defense. That and the body language he displayed afterward. You can’t have one of your leaders pouting during defense, or getting late to rotation while arguing a call

Goal: 8 seed!

by dso on Nov 6, 2010 7:48 PM PDT up reply actions

I watched it on DVR (after watching it in person), and it was a botched dunk attempt. Lee was open, took a pass, the defense closed in and fouled him. Lee missed the dunk and yelled at the refs. Smart, to me, appeared to be mad at Lee partly for blaming the refs, when Lee should have made it with or without a foul.

The Golden Glow is the only way to reach the upper level.

by Naticus on Nov 6, 2010 5:14 AM PDT up reply actions

that's what I thought

I haven’t watched it again, but I thought Lee was angry about a foul and didn’t take well to Smart laying into him at that time.

I am so glad to hear they are all adults and can move on. I’m sure the press and fans reliving every detail can make that hard, but we finally seem to have leaders with emotional intelligence on this team. Yeah.

Remember the Utah announcers bringing it up (was watching utah feed). During the game, they mentioned Smart yelling @ Lee this is the NBA & you’re not gonna get every foul & run back for D.

Lee was just blocked & upset he didn’t get a foul call & delayed running back on D.

Maybe the Giants have inspired them

I have to say, this is the best Warrior TEAM I have seen in a long time. They may not have as much talent as the We Believe team or the 48 win team, but man, you have to love the way they play. If they could add a quality back up point, like CJ, insert you own swearing here, I think they could make some noise this year and battle for the last playoff spot. But just as I liked this years Giants team much better than the 2002 Giants, I like this team, including Keith Smart, much better than some past teams. And does anyone here think Don Nelson could have won the game last night the same way? Beans would have only played 20 minutes and had 10 rebounds.

by rock1860 on Nov 6, 2010 11:46 AM PDT reply actions

We believe had talent and depth

We Believe team had an all-star level Baron, Beans was playing even better than he is now, Jackson had an amazing year, Harrington and Richardson were rounded out a very talented team. I believe that Curry will have a much better career than Baron, but Baron was as good as any point guard that year. Jackson was a 20 5 and 5 guy, plus good defense, D-Wright, as much as I like him, hasn’t done that for a year. Monta came off the bench and J Rich average 18. Beans was a double double machine that year and was a little more active. I hope he gets back to that. Only area that I think is improved this year, talent wise, is David Lee. And the We Believe team had a much deeper bench. But, much like the Spurs, I think a talented team like this one, can be better than the sum of their parts because they play like a team. I really think we have a shot of doing something special this year, not winning the championship special, but I think we can make the playoffs, call me crazy.

Really? Right now it’s looking like they have more talent than that team. Certainly a better starting five: Dorell + Lee is looking like a substantially better pair of forwards than the We Believe team had.. Monta is playing the best basketball of his career. And I’m not at all convinced that Baron was better than Curry. (The primary edge I’d be inclined to give Baron would be his sense of the moment, but last night Curry seemed to understand that vey well.)

And Biedrins seems to be playing much better defensively, despite the early-season fouling problem.

by Ronaldinho on Nov 6, 2010 11:53 AM PDT up reply actions

a quality back up point, like CJ, insert you own swearing here

[dang.]

I don’t really think of CJ as any kind of a point. He’s averaged 3.8 assists per 36 over his career — that’s like marginally better than David Lee. He’s a small, efficient scoring tweener guard who can’t really guard anyone (though he does force some steals). From what I’ve seen of him on the Bulls, he looks pretty crappy. With all due respect to onlxn: I’m totally OK with not giving 3/$10M (i.e. Dorell Wright money) to CJ Watson.

There will be no extra point!

by Sleepy Freud on Nov 6, 2010 12:07 PM PDT up reply actions

You might be right....

Reggie isn’t a back up PG, though he is good at having the offense run through him a few times a game. I just remember last year, in our system, CJ was a spark off the bench. He played the passing lanes well, brought a lot of energy, was a shoot first point guard, but he as a good ball handler for 15 minutes a game off the bench. He could initiate the offense. It is possible CJ was a product of Nelson’s system, seems like Morrow isn’t playing as well in NJ, but I still would feel more comfortable with him on the bench instead of Charlie Bell or Lin. Lin won’t be ready for another year or two.

by rock1860 on Nov 6, 2010 10:48 PM PDT up reply actions

I think Reggie does fine as a backup for both Curry and Ellis, as long as either Curry or Ellis are in. We’ve also seen Jeremy Lin do some interesting things coming in, due to his energy and apparent BBIQ. In road games, I think he’ll play a few minutes every game.

Also, CJ isn’t doing so well for the Bulls this year. I think we’re good without him.

Games like this show off the non-basketball side of Lee's acquisition

No doubt Coach Smart played a role in this too, but Lee’s arrival has definitely helped bring a culture change to this team. One thing you never heard about Lee when he was a Knick was that he ever gave less than 100% effort at either side of the floor. It looks like this is rubbing off on his young teammates and came at basically the perfect time. Monta is finally maturing, Curry is dealing with increased expectations in his sophomore campaign, Biedrins confidence was in tatters after Nellie. The change reminds me of when KG was traded to Boston and changed the whole image of the team (Pierce and Allen gaining reputations as solid defenders for the first time of their careers, accelerating the development of Perkins and Rondo, and Glen Davis actually gaining a career). If Lee’s effect is anywhere close to that on a team that is much younger, GS could be pretty dangerous over the next couple of years.

Believe it or not, there are plenty of 6-9 forwards in the NBA who can hustle and crash the boards. He does not come with the low post moves or defensive shot blocking that would put a franchise over the top. He’s a great rebounder … but that’s about it.

Yeah, but not very many who do it anywhere close to as well as he does.

Also not very many who score with the combination of efficiency and volume that he does.

And not very many who pass as well as he does.

Yeah, rebounding, “that’s about it.”

by Ronaldinho on Nov 6, 2010 12:21 PM PDT up reply actions

You must be joking. He’s a great rebounder and that’s about it? The guy made the all-star team. You don’t become an all-star just rebounding. Look at his stats over the years, man.

LOL. Kevin Garnett has made three 3-pointers total over the past three years. Count ’em.

David Lee is a better offensive player than today’s Kevin Garnett — straight up. He scores at a higher volume with better efficiency, and is just as good a passer.

You’re talking out of your [hat].

funny stuff

Garnett’s range up to the three point line?? Think you’re confusing yourself by throwing out random facts/names. Hurts your arguments/credibility when trying to slam another player.

Haha, I saw that too. Such a great line it actually gave me a renewed respect for the guy.

I’m going to say it’s funnier. It’s a little hard to gauge, though, because humor is entirely contingent on the surprise value of it. Since we know this joke (or another iteration), it takes away from it a bit.

those are pretty lofty expectations for a team that has had difficulty on east coast swings

What did i tell you...didn't I say they would win? Yeah that's right I did didn't ? Wait.. what? They LOST?!?!?

Key word: “hoping.” Not “expecting.”

This is a road trip we should go 3-2 on if we expect to make the playoffs.

Detroit, Toronto, NY, Chicago, , Milwaukee are all beatable. Chicago on 2nd end of a back to back is only one that worries me.

NY particularly I have a gut feeling Lee will have a big game.

Exactly. It remains a mystery why people keep insisting upon the relevance of a team with a mobile MedEvac full of players (including Biedrins), a rookie PG, a miserable Monta, a forward tandem of Maggs/Tolly/Devean George, bad uniforms, a clueless owner, and a lazy drunk head coach with personal grudges against half the players.

They’re also doing this with Heat games. You’ll hear stats about how they’ve gone x-y against this team over the past few years. Who cares?

I believe that ghosts are like dogs. They just do things arbitrarily.

BTW: did anyone notice that the new Warrior girl uni’s look like Hot Dog on a Stick?

Fans need to start giving Vlad some "Inverted Jeremy Lin Therapy"

Maybe if they boo him every time he touches the ball Smart will have put him in a suit too.

Negative

Booing your own player, no matter how bad, doesn’t make sense.

If anything, cheer the guy one and maybe he’ll do something good.

Yeah obviously playing Vlad is a bad idea but I think booing him when he does play is even worse. He just looks timid and in slow motion, maybe he has just lost it completely but I think he could potentially regain his shot. I mean, theoretically right? What’s to stop him? Right? Maybe? Please Vlad?

I was mostly joking. I'm actually anti-booing.

It’s almost as annoying as watching Vlad play basketball.

LOL so in order of suckitude how does it go then? From most to least suckiest:

Watching Vlad play > people getting too excited about Lin > Mikki Moore starting > people booing the home team?

Something like that.

great add that says a lot about both Lee and Smart

we are super lucky to have both of them – so glad we dumped Nellie
Not to hate, but can you imagine how AR would have responded to Smart tearing into him like that in the middle of a close game if AR screwed up?
Also, if Smart is telling his player to be men, take criticism like adults, play hard for 48 minutes and don’t let the drama linger – maybe this explains why BWright may not be his favorite warrior at the moment
