Keith Smart
On Stephen Curry:
"He is still in that growth cycle. He is at the bottom of that growth cycle of learning. And maybe in a year he will be up there with the Jason Kidds, and guys like that, Williams and Billups, where they know how to control and manage a game. I have to be very, very patient with that so I have to deal with the bad. Right now, he is in a growth cycle and he will continue to develop."

On The Team's Rebounding:
"I just think we are doing our case with rebounding. That is going to be our calling card. As long as we can limit teams to one-shot opportunities we are going to have a chance to be close in games. When you give them a second and third, most offensive rebounds end up in a wide open three, so we have got to take that away."
David Lee
On Today's Game:
"More than anything we needed a road victory and needed to play well on the road. We still didn’t play great tonight but we played well enough. I know that I needed to bring a lot of energy tonight to lead us, lead us emotionally on the road. I think we came out a little bit flat in Detroit."

On This Game Being A Confidence Booster For Him:
"This was a huge confidence booster for me and I think that I turned the corner as far as offensively, being a little bit more comfortable with what we are doing. If it wasn’t for foul trouble I probably would have had a much better scoring game. Either way we got the win and let’s hope Monta (Ellis) is okay."

On How The Warriors Responded Down The Stretch:
"That is what is tough about playing on the road, teams are always going to make a run at the end. Toronto is a good team at home and they made their run and we were able to get some key buckets. Steph (Curry) did a great job down the stretch making some tough ones."
Stephen Curry On Coming Back To Toronto: "I am familiar with the rims, it’s a pretty familiar environment and arena and it feels good when I come back."

On The Team's Slow Start Tonight:
"That is two games in a row where we haven’t got off to a great start on the road. It was a great timeout called by Coach to get us calmed down, back focused and we went on an 8-0 run and got the tempo back on our side. Two careless turnovers by me to start the game, but we got ourselves back into it and finished strong."

On Toronto's Comeback Attempt:
"Anytime you get the lead you want to get the kill, keep the pressure on the gas and keep attacking. In the third quarter we made some careless turnovers and played a little lackadaisical on offence and they got some easy transition baskets and got their crowd back into it. They feed off of their crowd. When they start to hear their crowd and get the energy going and we kept our composure in the fourth quarter and some big shots to seal the deal."

agreed

even the raptors announcers talked about the “warriors curse,” stating that “obviously there’s something larger at play here.” man. For the team, I’m worried. For monta, individually, I really hope it’s nothing serious. Spinal injuries are as potentially dangerous as they get.

by bradyk2 on Nov 8, 2010 7:43 PM PST up reply actions

All injuries are serious if it keeps someone out of a game.

"I thought it was going in," Warriors center Chris Hunter said. "It looked like the invisible man tipped it away at the last second."

with regards to the team, yes

but hurting your spine is much more dangerous from an individual standpoint than, say, your ankle or your wrist. Hurting your spine is how you potentially get paralyzed.

Nah

I got other, non-Warriors things to take care of in my life, which of course, I won’t mention here. It would help if the Warriors had a good year, but given the team struggles on offense so far, plus an unreliable bench, I’ve already prepared myself for a gritty, rebuilding season until Riley builds a good bench, and until Smart gets his rookie coaching season under his belt.

I didn't care for our 4th qtr lineups

Smart got away from our defenders and rebounders and they weren’t protecting the paint. Toronto should have never made it that close. I know Smart is trying to use everyone and save bodies and not over work anyone. Guess the lack of depth with big men kind of hurts right now.

by JSML on Nov 8, 2010 8:18 PM PST up reply actions

true

although I wish B Wright had played more in the fourth. I know VladRad can space the floor, but I’d rather some defense and shotblocking, which Wright brings.

by bradyk2 on Nov 8, 2010 8:19 PM PST up reply actions

Agreed...

With they way Wright was playing, I’m not sure why Smart decided to put in Vlad towards the end of the 4th quarter, especially since he didn’t get any playing time prior to that.

Oh that reminds me

The more FTs I see Biedrins misses, the more I’m annoyed he didn’t try the underhanded FT.

by IQofaWarrior on Nov 8, 2010 8:20 PM PST up reply actions

That would make too much sense

And would offend his pride. (I say that as a former underhand freethrow shooter—it is the most accurate way to shoot, but your teammates and opponents will definitely get on you about it.)

@WorldBLee

by worldblee on Nov 8, 2010 8:28 PM PST up reply actions

That's got to be better than making the record books again with a 0% FT

I think the requirement is pretty low, like 20 FT attempts in a season to be legit. The few times he has shot it, they LOOK better, but 1 hasn’t fallen in yet.

by IQofaWarrior on Nov 8, 2010 8:53 PM PST up reply actions

i think it’s mental at this point with Beans. Like you said, the look better. So I don’t see the underhand helping him much, because he’s clearly embarrassed, and his confidence is shook, and those are both going to be emphasized if he underhands it, unfortunately.

by bradyk2 on Nov 8, 2010 9:05 PM PST up reply actions

LOL

I love that term, “hack a Shaq”. I agree but they could minimize the touches he has on offense in latter part of the game. Even Wright would be a good option, he brings offense to the table. Mostly we need the defense in a game where you have a nice lead.

by jonesin25 on Nov 16, 2010 3:29 PM PST up reply actions

I had a thought

I know that Jeremy Lin played well in the 1st half, but I wonder why he did in the 3rd qtr to get subbed back out. I remember late in the 3rd qtr, I looked at the box score, and we went back to mostly starters against their bench unit. I THINK it has something to do with the sloppy plays off the bench when they came in, but perhaps someone who recorded the game can check.

really bad pass

good 1st half though. i’d rather have him as back up pg than bell, for sure

by joegiant on Nov 8, 2010 7:40 PM PST up reply actions

That "bad pass" was totally on Monta

If you’re a smallish guard posting up 35ft from the basket denmanding the ball then you have to pop back at the time of the pass to recieve it. If you’re Magic Johnson and can fend off your man then yes you want that ball within arms length. However the quick hook was justified as Lin was always a little off with his defensive positioning. Who doesn’t like what they see in this kid though, he’s already very proficient at drive and kick but he’s going to have to make a jump shot one of these days

by IQofaWarrior on Nov 8, 2010 7:42 PM PST up reply actions

there was a bad pass

but more, Lin isn’t the offensive threat any of our other guards are. It’ll come in time. Right now he’s played like a slightly-above-average rookie guard for over 30 minutes. If that’s his development level right now, we should all be thrilled.

Tor held their own 'asian heritage night' this game

just a coincidence that Adrien was inactive so Lin could play on 2/2 of these special nights ? Tor made its bid to get back into the game in the second half with Curry and Lee both on the bench and Lin back in. After Curry returned, the run by Tor continued 10-0 and Ellis had two free throws, missing two, and finally after 12 straight points Curry hit a shot. With relatively few reliable perimeter scorers on the team, it won’t be easy to find situations for Lin — so far his longest stints have been when the team is well ahead or way behind.

Lots of debbie downers here these days
We are 5-2 people! It is hard to win in the NBA – even teams like Detroit can stun you – we did that to good teams when we sucked too.
Yaaah for win! Good job by Beans in the first quarter and Lee in the second. Good job by Monta the whole game and Steph in the second half. Good job by Lin and BW off the bench. Good job by Smart with timely time outs called and making Barnangi a non-factor really.
Enjoy the wins people – last year we celebrated close losses – now we can celebrate wins, even ugly ones!

Video: Keith Smart in the hallway

by IQofaWarrior on Nov 8, 2010 10:19 PM PST reply actions

Interesting

The characteristics Keith Smart sees in Radman is that he’s a vet, he’s calm, not nervous, and understands how to play, and has confidence in him.

by IQofaWarrior on Nov 8, 2010 10:21 PM PST reply actions

Yeah

He did a good job defending on the perimeter when he switches and slows down the guy with the ball and body him and keep him on the perimeter. Those are the subtle things I see in him.

by IQofaWarrior on Nov 8, 2010 10:26 PM PST up reply actions

i dono

did you see him try to D up AK in the jazz game. He exhibited really poor judgement over and over

Goal: 8 seed!

by dso on Nov 9, 2010 7:39 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah, he really sucked in that Jazz game

And that would explain why Smart yanked him and didn’t play him in that game. But in other games, I do see him do some of subtle things correctly, like bodying people and switching to the correct player without hesitation as the opponent moves around on offense. Not perfectly every time, but often enough for me to wish that other players demonstrated those components in their defense.

Like for example, when defending the pick and roll, he’ll switch to the opposing guard and body up against him, preventing the guard from making a pass and keeping the guard around the perimeter until the opposing guard backs off to try something different. I’ve noticed this enough times to say that Radman’s defense there isn’t some fluke, but that he played it correctly.

So I do see some of the nice and surprisingly correct things he does defensively, even from last season. And I try to mention them during open threads. And I think those components are what Smart sees, so he has to use them when he can and when nobody else on the bench can do it. But his bad shooting is what sticks out like a sore thumb and catches everyone’s attention.

And yeah, he’s not a consistent player, which is why he will get benched in some games and play more minutes in other games.

by IQofaWarrior on Nov 9, 2010 9:32 PM PST up reply actions

see here's the thing though

i don’t care that radman has all the self confidence of a fat kid at fat camp. I expect him to not make shots; it is who he is, and has been ever since he was in LA even if the stats don’t show it. But I do expect him to make smart decisions on D, cuz that’s all he has. It’s what Phil Jackson continuously praised him for while in LA (i was living in socal then, listened to a lot of AM570), and it’s supposedly why he’s getting playing time over Bwright. So if I see him make any error at all, I’m especially hard on him because he’s not going to score points for me, he’s not going to stretch the D with the threat of his offensive ability, etc etc. It’s all he’s got.

So I expect him to play smart, error-free Defense, and if he doesn’t, he’s not worth it. I don’t care about consistency when it comes to his scoring or whatever; but if his defense is also inconsistent then he needs to get off the floor and stay off.

Goal: 8 seed!

by dso on Nov 9, 2010 9:56 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah, I understand where you're coming from

But put yourself in Smart’s shoes. If you’re going to be hard on Radman for the defensive inconsistency he brings and keep him off the floor, then you must also be equally hard for the inconsistencies the other bench players bring as well, which includes Reggie, Carney, Bell, BWright, Gadz, and Lin, which means you’d have to keep them all off the floor. But now you’re playing a 5 man rotation with no bench at all.

So all Smart can do is mix and match his bench based on whether he thinks those players will have success against the current opponent. And if they end up totally sucking, he yanks them out. I already mentioned Smart yanking out Radman in that Jazz game. Another example was last night: Smart played Lin vs the Raptors, I presume because he thought Lin would do well against the Raptors bench players. And Lin did do well against Calderon in the 2nd qtr. But something must have gone wrong in the 3rd qtr, because Smart pulled Lin out and put Curry back for the rest of the game.

So even though I cringe every time Radman takes a shot, and I know he’s not always defensively perfect, I understand why he’s out there, because he CAN be useful at times and for certain tasks. And in order to keep the starting 5 happy and not burnt out, we have to “weather the storm” and squeeze every drop of usefulness out of Radman until Larry Riley can build a real bench.

Radman does everything except finish...

Kind of an important one there, considering his rep is as a “shooter”

For those who can't see the video,

Smart doesn’t coach by giving minutes just to give him minutes. He has to go on the feel of the game. He expects to have a “Reggie night” later on, and then the same question will be asked about someone else’s minutes.

Lin

plays good team defense and challenges shots. He did get beat by Jack off the dribble, so Lin needs to make adjustments.

He seems to harass the crap out of opponents. He really has uncanny hustle.

And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who would attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know my name is Monta Ellis when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

that's why

I was so pleased that Monta is going hard against him in practice. If he can even come close to handling Monta, he’ll be just fine defending normal humans.
