David Lee has had a hard time scoring this year. Whether it be by the jumper or post up, he's not hitting his shots. I think there's 2 things to blame for this:
A) His finger. Last year he was one of the best mid range jump shooters in the NBA, shooting them at a mark similar to Kobe Bryant and Dirk. That's definitely been a problem, and his free throw shooting is off. I think that's tied back to his finger, which is still not completely healed.
B) Keith Smart
According to Synergy, David Lee was one of the top 10 players in the NBA in the pick and roll. It is a huge part of his offense (as it should be), and he dominates in that regard. Lee is a nice low post scorer, but throwing the ball to him down there for his offense is going to lead to failure. So, we have an excellent player in the pick and roll, and another player or two (Monta and Curry) who play well in it too. So, i ask Keith Smart... where has the pick and roll been? There has been a lot to criticize regarding Smart's coaching this year but this seems to be pretty high up for me. The pick and roll has been barely run this year. Mark Jackson (while a complete idiot) made a good point in the preseason that giving the ball to Lee and Biedrins in the post is letting the defense off the hook. And according to numerous articles we are trying to run a similar offensive system to the Jazz. The famous Jazz play has been the Stockton to Malone/Williams to Boozer pick and roll. If we are to mirror this system why not use the play that has been so successful, especially when it perfectly fits our team's skills and talent.
Keith Smart needs to improve this if we are to really maximize our potential. Not playing Monta in a similar role to last year (he's playing excellent but it's a similar role so i'm warry he'll start playing not so great soon) is one thing. His rotations are a mess, and his usage of Lee + Biedrins on offense has been pretty bad to say the least. I'll be taking notes of what he does in these regards down the line. We should be 5-1 right now.
