Around SBN: Bob Sapp Denies Throwing Fights

"I don't think it's not a matter of playing hard, just athletically. We got 7-footers who are very athletic. We used to have 6-8 guys who weren't athletic. (Ronny) Turiaf came to us as a shotblocker. (Timofey) Mozgov is 7-1. Amar'e (Stoudemire) blocks shots. (Wilson) Chandler always did. We just have better athletes and taller people. It allows us to play faster. It's not a knock on the other group. They played hard. They weren't athletic enough.''

I'd gladly take Lee over Stoudemire, given what each of them have done so far this season.

I don’t know that Amare is a better defender than Lee, but he is a more capable one. Usually he is pretty lazy, but when motivated I’ve seen him play good defense.

And you pretty much know nothing if you think Lee’s shot blocking compares. Lee averages 0.4 blocks per game for his career and has 2 blocks in 7 games this season. Amare however averages 1.4 for his career and has 11 in 6 games so far. Amare is a MUCH better shot blocker.

The Lakers have a bigger chance of missing the playoffs than the Warriors have of making them.

He can be.

Overall though, his laziness prevents him from being a good defender. I’d still take him defensively over Lee.

B Wright is a better blocker than Amare.

Okay...

How does this affect the Knicks decision to go after Amare and not Lee?

I’m not even sure that’s true.

Sounds like AR…

Again...

this was about the Knicks getting more athletic. If it sounds like AR, and they added Amare while letting go of Lee, then what D’Antoni said is true.

The Lakers have a bigger chance of missing the playoffs than the Warriors have of making them.

Before this season, I would have said Amare is pretty bad defensively and therefore close to the level of Lee (knowing Lee was pretty bad). This season has really opened my eyes to just how bad Lee is. I’d take Amare’s D over Lee’s any day, and that’s coming from someone who doesn’t like to judge defense based on what a guy is capable of doing, but what he does night in and night out (in other words, makes Amare look worse)….it’s just Lee is that poor defensively….

I'm nt sure they screwed up

Turiaf is the best center they have right now, and he’s playing very well. I’m actually as interested in that match up or more than in Lee/Amar’e. Landry Fields has been playing well, as well. With or without the Lee for STAT tradeout, NY is a better team this year – and without Turiaf that’s arguably not true. (which is hysterical, considering what our hysteria was over.)

Yeah, the mistake was in giving Amare as much money as they did…

What's wrong with this?

They are more athletic this season. They are also better shot blockers. Amare probably is faster and quicker than Lee as well. All D’Antoni did was tell the truth and spin it in a slightly more positive light.

The Lakers have a bigger chance of missing the playoffs than the Warriors have of making them.

I don’t know that Amare’s any faster or quicker than Lee. He’s a bit bigger and a probably a bit stronger. Subjective impressions of athleticism aside, Lee’s a vastly superior rebounder and passer — two skills that are extremely helpful if you want to play at a faster pace.

Sounds a bit like d’Antoni’s shilling for the Knicks’ brass. David Lee’s far from perfect, but he’s a better basketball player than Amare Stoudemire. Amare at 5 years/$100M is just an awful deal for that organization, imo.

There will be no extra point!

But hey those damn Knicks weren't even going to draft David Lee according to a yahoo sports report.

They had to be convinced by their scouts to do so. Lets just say the Knicks have always overvalued scoring, and undervalued David Lee.

He was their leading scorer last year...

maybe they just didn’t think he was that good.

You wouldn't take Amare in a 40 yard dash or cone drill?

I would. And I wouldn’t necessarily say Amare is bigger. He might have an inch on Lee, but he’s not as heavy. He’s certainly a better leaper and more athletic.

All D’Antoni said is they’re more athletic. He didn’t even name names.

The Lakers have a bigger chance of missing the playoffs than the Warriors have of making them.

Amare’s definitely way more explosive than David Lee.

by Missing Barry on Nov 9, 2010 7:26 AM PST up reply actions

That was my reaction, too -

They want to play uptempo, so they don’t want David Lee?

That makes no sense.

That being said, I’m not sure Lee and Amare make sense as a pair of bigs on one team. They’re both defensive liabilities, and while Lee is a much better rebounder, their offense both occupies the same area of the floor.

by Ronaldinho on Nov 9, 2010 8:43 AM PST up reply actions

All I have to say is that Lee's offensive game has been off

and he has still made this team leagues better than last year just simply by rebounding, when he gets his P&R down he is going to kill for the Warriors and we will be even better than we are now. A’mare has his strengths where he is better than Lee but Lee is a better rebounder and from what I have been seeing he is a better playmaker as well. I absolutely can’t wait to see Lee to get more comfortable with his finger and get his jumper down.

I think the problem is our pick and roll

I don’t see many pick and roll in the game at all. Monta has been hot, Curry was warm and then got super hot. Our Gs have been shooting in our pick and roll, leaves Lee to easy baskets.

We need to do pick and roll more for Lee and B Wright.

by ILoveWarriorsGirls on Nov 8, 2010 9:38 PM PST up reply actions

The funny thing is, while it’s true Lee hasn’t gotten his offensive game going like we expect yet….Amare’s offensive game is virtually non-existant at the moment. He’s been playing some truly terrible basketball.

by Missing Barry on Nov 9, 2010 7:28 AM PST up reply actions

Amar'e may be flashier and a better athlete

But Lee is still a superior rebounder. I’ll take that.

by bradyk2 on Nov 8, 2010 8:59 PM PST reply actions

Misleading title?

This isn’t a dig at Lee. It’s a dig at fact they played him @ Center, and Harrington, Wilson Chandler, heck Danilo Gallinari at PF.

by tafkasam on Nov 8, 2010 9:38 PM PST reply actions

Lee is a better fit for OUR team.

That’s all that needs to be said, and all WE should care about. I hope NY is happy with Amare. We’re happy with Lee :)
