Reggie Williams
On the game's last possession:
"That’s the guy we want to take the shot, that’s who we called the play for and that’s who had the ball in his hands. I felt good about him having the ball, thinking he was going to make it. Monta had the most points tonight. He was on fire, and went on a scoring spurt by himself at one point. He was the hot man. It was just unfortunate that it didn’t fall."

On the close finish:
"We gave ourselves a chance to win it at the end, and you can’t ask for more on the road. We just couldn’t pull it out."

Interesting Tweets

(before the game)
Rusty_SFChron: Coach Smart and Monta Ellis had a fake closed-door meeting before the game, which started with Smart slamming something against the wall.
Rusty_SFChron: They both laughed throughout the skit. In all honesty, I think the real reason for the meeting had something to do with headphones.
(next day after practice)
MSteinmetzCSN: Ws updates: Biedrins not practicing, day-to-day; Curry participating in certain parts; day-to-day; Gadz no practice day-to-day.

Notes

- Gadz strained his left groin during the game and did not return. No update on the injury yet.
- Rodney Carney said he was still feeling pain in his foot, but he fought through it on Saturday.

Awful game, we did not deserve to win.

The only good thing about this game was Carney. I hope this game forces him to get more game time.

Smart continues to have terrible rotations.

I hate games like this.

Everyone is going to say, “Well our team played bad, but at least Carney deserves more minutes”. Then Carney will struggle for a few weeks while some other rotation guy decides to play well, and the cycle will continue.

Carney always deserves more minutes than vlad. End of story.

If this team was any good, it’s likely neither of them would even be on the roster.

looked at the last shot about 100x...

Plan A was for Monta to drive Mathews. Looked good. Got him on the cross over.

Then DLee got tangled up with Mathews causing traffic.

Monta went to Plan None. He had 4.1 seconds left to drive on Aldridge. If he beat Aldridge he would have Miller in front, which meant he could have kicked it to wide open Reggie in the corner. But Monta took the step back fade.

+1

Monta had him and crossed him good, than Lee just had to fall in the way of Monta’s open path and Monta had to fade away. What was Lee doing?

In fact the crossover was so good he made him fall

He had the lane, than Lee tripped and cause he was on the floor Aldridge came out. He had to take that shot, can’t blame Monta

How do you know that was plan A?

There was obvious miscommunication on that play, we don’t know what play Smart called.

Smart said it was for Monta to read the defense and basically it was his choice

It was obvious he was going to the rim until Lee fell

Min thing I hate about the last play

The screen.

If your going to call an iso for Monta don’t give him a screen and bring a 2nd defender into the play and cause a train wreck. In fact screw that, I hate that about 90% of Monta iso’s is Lee coming to give him a screen, he doesn’t need one and is better without it. Plan A was drive and plan B was to pull up….. Plan “what did we just do?” happened. Lee screens, falls, Monta fadeaway. I will say this, if that had gone in it’d been amazing

We don’t know what play was called. Either way, someone fudged up because Monta was playing an Iso and DLee was going in for the p&r. These guys do listen for the play call during the timeout right?

The Golden State Warriors, we make Free Throws look difficult!

by Badly Browned on Dec 19, 2010 8:01 AM PST up reply actions

Watching it in a loop in slo mo

Or a fake screen followed by a cut to the basket. Lee didn’t stop to set any sort of a screen. If it was a true pick and roll, Lee must stop or risk getting called for a moving screen. Whatever it was, there was a definite fudge up somewhere, because Lee got in the way of Monta initial drive to the left.

And as for listening for the play call during a timeout: hah! I am reminded of something Don Nelson said when he was on KNBR with Ralph and Tom. They were talking about Monta not paying attention in the huddle right after that home Cavs game. It went something like this:

Nellie: …How many times have you been in a huddle and the coach is giving you information and options and what-not, and at the end of the huddle you go “What was the play again???”?
Tom: A LOT.
Nellie: Haha, yeah, a lot! It’s a human trait! It happens more than you think. But in the end, Monta should have been paying more attention.

It sucks that KNBR no longer linked to that mp3, but I still remember that segment.

by IQofaWarrior on Dec 19, 2010 11:10 AM PST up reply actions

I just realized my opening sentence sounds like it makes no sense.

Or “it could have been” a fake screen followed by a cut to the basket…

by IQofaWarrior on Dec 19, 2010 11:25 AM PST up reply actions

Also

I didn’t mean to imply that Tom asks “What was the play again” a lot. I meant to say that some player in the huddle asks that question.

by IQofaWarrior on Dec 19, 2010 11:36 AM PST up reply actions

It looked obvious

Monta was going to drive left, Lee fell in the way so he had to go right and had to shoot

Why did he "have to" shoot? There was enough time to go to the hole but...

It wasn’t all Monta’s fault but to say that he couldn’t do it differently is just not true.

by buky on Dec 19, 2010 4:36 PM PST up reply actions

Okay tell me where he could have gone

Drive right? He had no where to go there or enough time to get a clean look that way

He had plenty of time

a fundamental lack in Ellis

he has little aptitude about the clock — has committed recurring defensive blunders with time running out — and lacks the extra bit of patience to slow things just a touch and catch a defender or two with their feet in the wrong position. He almost never draws fouls in those situations, which are perfect for it (even hitting one free throw in that situation with l second or less on the clock gets an overtime). The player who handles the ball at with more than a few seconds should be clever in forcing the defenders to foul or concede a better shot than that 18-19 ft. fade away.

What time he had he used to try and get separation on LA with a fade away/step back

I can’t imagine Monta completely changing course than going to the rim
