Keith Smart
On tonight's game:
"I believe we have a good basketball team. I've got to say, I believe we do, because to be down and be able to come back to make it a manageable … that’s why I know we are going to be good. I preach that to these guys in the locker room, that if they keep that up; we can figure out a way to manage the first quarter, we are going to have a chance. I just have to keep selling that and they have to believe that because this game could have been over. We could have been down 20 points on the road and packed it in, but these guys made it a manageable game with about a minute, two minutes to go in the game. So without a doubt I think we are going to be a good team when it all is said and done."

On selling a positive attitude in the locker room:
"I believe in those men in that locker room over there. It’s not hard to sell things to people you believe in and they believe in what we are trying to do. So it’s not a hard sell in that regard."

On the back and forth nature of the game tonight:
"It’s a long game. Don’t play the clock; play your execution part of the game. Don’t play the clock because somewhere along the lines, they are going to make multiple mistakes to give you an opportunity to make plays and try to execute what it is that we are trying to do. I think that is what our guys did. Some guys made some big, tough shots. No matter how you cut it, it will always come down to how the basketball players are making plays."

On how to get urgency when down:
"Our team is a little out of sync. We are still putting the pieces back together and starting to put things back to order. So it is not like this is the team we had earlier in the year. We have to work through all those things and then it will come. I believe it will come and they believe it will come. We are just in that cycle right now, we are in that cycle where things are not totally clear for our team right now, but you saw how we played and how they played whenever they were down. But, when you get down and finally get yourself back in the game, that’s when your margin for error is so small."
Monta Ellis
On the team’s outlook for the season:
"We’ve got to just go on to practice and put this one behind us. We need to take this 3rd and 4th quarter and try to convert it over to the next game. It’s a long season. We are at a great position. We just have to keep playing together. It’s going to turn for us; I know it is. We’re a little frustrated at this point but we’ve got to look at the positives. It’s too early in the season for us to hang our head or get out of our comfort zone. We’ve just got to continue to work hard and stay together as a team."
Stephen Curry
On tonight's game:
"It’s frustrating why we can’t start off the game like we played in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th quarters. We won the game by like 10 after the 1st quarter. We just have to find a way to come out of the blocks a little faster."

Outlook of the team:
"We need to keep doing what we’re doing even though the results haven’t been what we’ve wanted, but we’re doing things that a winning team does. We are having spurts of it defensively. We’re rotating well and talking and we’re moving the ball. Everybody’s getting involved which is important if we want to win."

Gah, I’m getting kinda tired of Matt “Money” Steinmetz continuously saying Monta doesn’t receive help.

Out backcourt really gets no help in general

Notice when someone in addition to Monta and Curry goes off, we have a good chance to win

by tafkasam on Dec 5, 2010 8:17 PM PST up reply actions

He's highly critical of Curry's D

Which is fair and the rest of Bay Area is in denial this season Curry’s D has been awful and costs us FAR more in games than acknowledged. He had 38 tonight, and that was awesome. He also turned it over 4 times for easy fast breaks and whats worse he fouled them giving multiple AND1s.

By the way, if you haven’t figured out, Steinmetz is a guy who would prefer to watch 55-52 bobby knight 1980s indiana basketball.

by tafkasam on Dec 5, 2010 8:57 PM PST up reply actions

agreed… and Steinmetz hasn’t always been a Monta fan. Before the season, he had mentioned more than once that he would’ve done the Thabeet/Mayo trade.

by range on Dec 5, 2010 9:53 PM PST up reply actions

I'm not worried about Currys shooting

Everyone has off nights. Monta included

It’s the rest of his game. Even tonight, he had ball all game, still only had 6 assists in 48 minutes with 5 turnovers. Almost all leading to easy baskets. Thats the game RIGHT there. Bad turnovers leading to fast break points.

by tafkasam on Dec 5, 2010 9:00 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah and Dorell missed an even more crucial 3 that would have tied the game. And it’s just not Curry who makes crucial plays that cost the game. Monta’s poor free throw shooting cost us the game against the Suns.

he only had 6 assists

He should’ve had more than 10, there were at least 5 or 6 occasions where he set up teammates for a wide open shot and they just failed to convert. Don’t forget you can’t get assists unless you pass to a person that scores. Also, his turnovers were a result of playing too many minutes. Did you see him every time they showed a close-up? He was exhausted throughout, another example of Keith Smart’s bad coaching. Sure, he kept us in the game, but I would have rather he sat out a few minutes between the first and second and then third and fourth quarters, and still play around 40 minutes. If we need our stars playing more than 40 minutes just to be close to winning, we might as well not ruin their future (all those unnecessary added miles, they won’t be in their early 20’s forever) and give consistent game time to bench players to try and develop some sort of consistency and production, possibly raising their trade value, and bringing in better talent.

Funny thing is 4 of his turnovers came EARLY in 3rd. Right after halftime. There wasn’t any real sign of fatigue, it was just carelesss-ness

By a long shot — .595 TS. That’s borderline phenomenal for a guy who consistently has to create his own shot.

by Sleepy Freud on Dec 6, 2010 5:19 AM PST up reply actions

What I don't like is...

His movement off the ball seems to have gotten worse. For how elite a shooter he is, he needs to be moving a bit more and coming off screens when the ball is in Monta or Lee’s hands for example. Is it too much for me to ask him to be Steve Nash and Ray Allen!?

by tafkasam on Dec 6, 2010 7:55 AM PST up reply actions

Well he is being like Steve Nash.
Steve Nash gets like 85-90% of his shot attempts with the ball in his hands. Curry is at about 2/3s.

Anybody else getting nervous about David Lee?

6 years, 80 million. Jeez. I mean, I know he is just coming back from a serious elbow injury, but still. For a guy whose defense is questionable, shouldn’t he have a little bit more of an offensive game? He seems so limited out there. Is his inability to hit the elbow jumper this year changing the way defenses play him? I guess we can only hope for the best.

by randolphforpresident on Dec 5, 2010 7:37 PM PST reply actions

i'd say lee's among the least of our problems

he’s said his elbow is still affecting his ability to rebound, and I’m assuming it’s also hindering his aggressiveness and when he attacks, he’s avoiding the contact. Also, his mid-range shots this year have all either gone in or been short. He just needs to start getting more legs into his shots, and once he finds his rhythm, he’ll be more confident with the ball, teams will have to respect him on defense, and he’ll either return to his 20-10 form of last year or the respect he earns allows players around him to get more open looks (e.g. on the pick and roll) and help get us wins.

eh

His scoring is a little down by design but this passing has been really good. Right now he’s putting in 14, 10 and 3. Last few games assists have been hire. Really if he ends season at 15, 11 and 4 would you be unhappy? Thats what I assumed we’d see out of him.

I never expected Lee to be a 20 point scorer, that was an ab oration. But he is a very good PF who does a lot to help the team. He makes biedrins expendable too. In that I mean we don’t need to have a Center who just rebounds cause Lee is an elite rebounder himself.

I’d also blame smart. He runs almost every offensive set with DLee in the high post. How about some more pick and roles, or playing him closer to hoop at times?

BTW he’s hitting the 10-15 footer at a ridiculous 85.7%. It’s the 16 to 23 footer hes only hitting at 20% (down from 43.7% last year). He should improve it, but maybe he needs to be a little closer?

by tafkasam on Dec 5, 2010 8:22 PM PST up reply actions

Really if he ends season at 15, 11 and 4 would you be unhappy?

this is why players should not be judged by per game #‘s. if he’s getting that 15 pts with a 51.8% TS%, we should all be unhappy. his career rate is 59.6% and his lowest season has been 58.4%. in his 1st 3 seasons as a PF, he’s never had a season under 60%.

his turnover rate is also up and his assist rate is down. if the dubs are going to get the 8th spot, they seriously need to find a way to place Lee in spots to get his TS% back up and his TOV’s back down to what he was in his first 5 seasons.

right now only Steph and (surprisingly) Reggie are scoring with an efficiency rate well above average (i chose +3% as my marker for above avg). Andris’ efficiency is also down, but he takes about half the amount of shots that Lee takes so getting Lee’s % back would help more so than finding a way to get Andris’ efficiency up.

Synergy has the stats available. they need to find areas and situations where Lee is effective and put him in those situations instead of forcing this Utah Jazz offense upon him.

by the evil monkey on Dec 5, 2010 9:09 PM PST up reply actions

Monta is scoring efficiently (.555 TS%).

And yes I’m aware Lee’s efficiency is down, I didn’t spell it out but it is directly because of the offense. He is not put in situations to succeed.

by tafkasam on Dec 5, 2010 9:23 PM PST up reply actions

man. when did people stop reading? i said “i chose +3% above avg as my marker” for good efficiency.

like you said, Monta is currently 1.5% over league avg. that’s still 4% lower than Lee’s career avg. (also Beans and BW are also fluctuating just over league avg.)

point still remains. if the dubs want to be vie for the 8th seed. outside of improving on their defense (via either not missing assignments and making quicker rotations or a trade for a heavy minute player who defends well), they’re going to have to put an emphasis on Lee to get back to his roughly 60% TS%. this should be the goal no matter whose game is sacrificed b/c that 60% is higher than anyone else on the team. preferably it would come at the expense of DoWright, but even if it’s at Monta’s expense, it would still greatly help the team to have a starter with a 60% TS%.

by the evil monkey on Dec 5, 2010 11:42 PM PST up reply actions

ugh

I don’t really care if you choose +3% because that means nothing. Fact is Monta is scoring at an above average efficiency. .555 TS% puts him ahead of players like Wade, Kobe, BRoy for reference. The league average is somewhere around .534% this year. His scoring is NOT a problem, it’s a positive of this team.

And that’s ignoring fact he’s our only consistent slasher and player off the dribble to the basket which opens up shots for a lot of players.

As for Lee, it’s pretty obvious to me what needs to happen. We need to run more pick and rolls. Curry pick and roll with Monta slashing from the side. Or Monta pick and and roll w/ Curry coming off screen on the peremeter.

As for Lee’s high career TS%, again it’s a case of stats not telling whole story. Even in his 20ppg year, new york knicks weren’t running many plays for him. He got them in the flow of the offense mostly. Thats a large reason people din’t rate him as an elite PF as opposed to other guys who ran the offense directly thru them. Not a knock on Lee, just a fact

by tafkasam on Dec 6, 2010 7:51 AM PST up reply actions

Wade, Kobe, BRoy for reference.

But below all of their career averages.
BRoy is broken, DWade is adjusting to his LeBron and Kobe’s efficiency has seriously declined.

Specially towards the 4th quarter while Im in a family friend party. I can’t hear Jim and Bob because of people in the party is loud. So please someone explain to me why Lee sit most of the 2nd half. And all I can say is Adrien is beasting out there and Curry and Monta is doing everything to cut into the deficit. But why Lee sit out while Beans is on the floor during crunch time. All I can see is Smart going small during the fourth. Then does it make sense to put Lee instead of Beans. Or Smart try to match Kristic with Beans its hard watching Bball when you are in a party with big crowd that they speak louder than the TV

There was no explanation during the game or in Smart’s post game interview. My guess is that he went small when David Lee drew foul #4, and it was working, so Smart stuck with it.

Offense/Udoh/Amundson

Andris should never get the ball on the block, sure he gets the occasional hook to go in but thats not where he flourishes.

What I’m saying will make a bit more sense when DLee is 100%.

Steph Curry should be our #1 option no matter what, he can do it all. Our sets should start with the ball in his hands every single time and he should be pushing most of our breaks.

I’m gonna say have Lee as our #2 option, but I’m going to use #2 spot loosely. We’ve seen what Lee can do for D.Wright, he should be able to do the same for Ellis/Andris on cuts and curls. Monta will have a much better look when Lee initiates the offense for him on a cut.

  1. Monta Ellis, he should give up ball dominance to Steph and start working off of screens and cuts, this will not only make him more efficient but we know what Steph can do when he dominates the ball.
  1. D.Wright, enough said. He should NOT be taking more than 12-15 shots a game when we have 3 offensively proficient players on our squad.

I would also like to say Udoh and Amundson will bring a solid defensive/rebounding presence off the bench, which we are lacking right now. So when Andris/Lee get into foul trouble/need a breather, we can still compete on the glass and in the paint.

by Anonymous1337 on Dec 5, 2010 9:48 PM PST reply actions   1 recs

I agree

I think Curry needs to have the ball in his hands almost all the time for this team to be successful. How many games do we win when Monta dominates the ball, even if he has a great shooting night? Very few it seems. It just seems like whenever we get into a routine of going to the Monta well, play after play, it never works out in the end.

While Curry makes some careless turnovers, when he gets going, defenders really have to respect the pass, in addition to his shot, which is just a much more sustainable offensive strategy.

by randolphforpresident on Dec 5, 2010 10:41 PM PST up reply actions

for me, i don’t really care who has the ball in their hands as long as they get it to Lee or AB in spots where those 2 have historically scored/finished/whatever you want to call it at a high rate.

so far Curry has only been marginally better than Ellis at this (6.2 assists per 36 vs 4.6), but he is technically slightly better and since it’s only his 2nd year, maybe he can somehow still improve upon this.

by the evil monkey on Dec 6, 2010 12:03 AM PST up reply actions

Well, his AR is solidly higher. Curry’s is around 21 and Monta is like 16.

I was kind of wary about this last year/coming into this year, but having seen him this year I am pretty much ready to say that he can be a primary offensive option. His improved ability to finish at the rim and get to the line has me sold. I know it’s going to sound weird, but Curry is actually more productive this year than last year.
