Monta Ellis
On tonight's game:
"We played hard all 48 minutes. We just made careless mistakes at the wrong time. Just mistakes that were made trying to make the right play. I think this was our only game this season where we actually played 48 minutes. It was a tough battle, we knew what we were coming into and I think we played great. But, that said, we just made mistakes at the end to make it a burden on us."
Stephen Curry
On tonight's game:
"We fought the whole game to try to keep ourselves in it and then they hit a couple big shots in the 3rd quarter, got some separation, but we were able to stay in the game. We’ve got to be smarter down the stretch, we made a couple of careless turnovers. I think we were down 4 and had the ball with a minute-and-change left and could’ve gotten it to one possession and I gave the ball away. So, little plays like that lose the game for you and ruin all the hard work we put into trying to win on the road against a great team. It’s a learning experience for us, too."

On competing against a good team:
"We compete with every team in this league we just have to figure out how to get the results out of it. We’re all getting better each game, it’s just a matter of putting it together for 48 minutes and working bits and pieces as a matter of getting our whole performance together. We’ve got another chance tomorrow."

On the team's fourth-quarter turnovers:
"Little plays like that can add up and [you] lose your possessions. We’ve just got to be more on the same page down the stretch, and get into our offense, and make sure we know where each other is on the court and make the right play. So, that’s something we’ve got to do."

Interesting Tweets

(during yesterday's practice)
gswscribe: Monta shot an airball in practice. His response: "Change balls." Yes, of course, they did swap out the ball.
gswscribe: Amundson tried to take a shot inside, but the ball flew from his hand. Then he dropped a pass right to him. #handnotreadyyet
gswscribe: Smart blamed bad outlet by Amundson on Curry. Smart: "You were right behind him and didn't say nothing. ... Put some bass in your voice."

I knew we lost when J-Terry laid in that finger roll and they went up 6

I like what I saw out of Amnduson and Lee… Curry and Ellis need to stop with the turnovers. They had like 12 combined…. its safe to say we got outbenched.

On a side note

I’ve been noticing that Randolph has been piling up the D.N.P.’s for New York. Maybe they would be amenable to swapping him for an expiring!?

I’m just sayin!

Wow, just looked the story up on google

Looks like the TWolves are suffering with their version of the injury curse:

Just when the Timberwolves have welcomed back Nikola Pekovic from injury and are waiting for Martell Webster and Jonny Flynn any day … they go and lose reserve power forward Anthony Tolliver for at least the next four to six weeks.

Well then...

"I tell him straight, 'If you're going to lead, you have to be the first to practice. You have to come in, get your work down and be prepared for practice,' " assistant coach Keith Smart said. "He needs to figure out why he is having stomach problems and he's got to watch how LeBron (James), Kobe (Bryant) and D-Wade (Dwyane Wade) work. He needs to mimic that if he wants his teammates to speak volumes about him." -Keith Smart on Motna Ellis

too many:

turnovers and missed free throws. cut down to what the league average is in those two categories and we win the game.

Warriors Wonder: Dorell Wright

By default. Monta and Curry’s turnovers killed us. Lee’s free throws and shooting wasn’t great. I’ll take the SF who got 11 rebounds, 17 points, 4 assists and 3 steals.

Slept through the game...darn

Literally dozed off at 5:30 and woke up at 8:30…oh well. Another game, another loss…

Looked at the box score, WTF Keith Smart I know our bench sucks but you can’t just ride the starters like that every night. Also, Amundson plays the most minutes out of any of the bench guys in his first game of the year after a long injury layoff? Surprising I guess, is he going to make the impact in our bigs rotation that we’re hoping for?

Still waiting for Udoh to come back and save us though. WE NEED YOU UDOH

WTF Keith Smart I know our bench sucks but you can’t just ride the starters like that every night

Because it was a back and forth game. How many games have we had where our starters hold par and our bench comes in and we go down 8 to 10?

We had a chance to steal this as @San Antonio on a back to back is almost a given loss.

Worst part, some poor free throwing shooting (and turnovers) cost us, not Dallas depth. Monta and Lee combine for 4 of 11 from the line. If they go more towards there career averages of 75%, make 8 out of 11, different game

I saw Monta 6 TO and Steph 6 TO

Never a good thing. Steph has been loose with the ball this year, not a good thing

pretty good game - fun to watch

Nice to see we were able to hang with the Mavs – a few more made free throws and a few less turnovers and we win.
I have to say though that this is one more game that screams that we need to make some moves to upgrade the bench. How good would we be if we had JTerry and Matrix coming off the bench? scary!

After the game, Steinmetz on Steph Curry

Matt said that based on what he’s seen this season so far, Steph is beginning to look more like a two guard and less like a point guard. This struck me cause I had begun over maybe the last 6 or so games to look at the boxscores and look at the assist – turnovers between Ellis and Curry and had begun to get the impression that Ellis was taking on more of the play making responsibilities than Curry, and at a better assist-turnover ratio. Even during this game against the Mavs, and maybe my memory is just being biased, but I can recall more monta slash and dishes to open bigs near the basket than I can remember Curry assists for easy buckets. If Steinmetz prediction turns out to be true, and I really hope that its not and Curry is merely in a funk, I’m curious as to how this changes the dynamic of this team going forward in regards to our backcourt.

Anyone else have thoughts?

by kyzah on Dec 7, 2010 9:27 PM PST reply actions

If your backcourt can average 12+ assists per game, I don't see why not they can't share ballhanding duties

And it’s not the Curry/Ellis backcourt we should be concerned about, it’s our weak bench that we should all be worried about

by JustSomeName on Dec 7, 2010 9:45 PM PST up reply actions

Interesting comment from Steinmetz

I wouldn’t say Monta’s been taking over more of the PG duties, he’s just been really good this about playing to what the defense is giving him. Tonight, Dallas denied him looks, so he dished more. Monta’s really matured this season.

As for Curry, I think this “more of 2 thing” isn’t because that’s his natural thing…it’s because Smart’s offense makes NO sense. Ellis and Curry are the two best shooters on the team and the team runs ZERO plays to get these guys open looks. I think Curry would look more like a point guard if the rest of the players (besides Monta) knew WHERE TO MOVE TO in order to receive a dime from Curry. Under Nelson, Curry is a DYNAMIC PG. Under Smart he’s just a player who can shoot.

Last year both guys were constantly getting screens set and open looks, this year the only open look they get is if they pull up on their own.

This season is turning into a disaster IMO because Smart is de-volving the offense and I think the players are going to develop VERY bad habits as a result.

by joegiant on Dec 7, 2010 9:47 PM PST up reply actions

Monta gets open looks

He’s constantly running and curling off of screens set by our bigs. Curry doesn’t get those plays called for him. He just tries working off a pick & roll.
I really think we need to get back to our fastbreak style of basketball. Not neccessarily Nellie ball but get out in the open court more. Our scoring totals are plummeting. What’s the point in having on of the best, if not the best, open court players on our team(Monta) if we’re not gonna utilize him???

well we don’t need two undersized 2 guards as half as much as we need one undersized 2 guard so something would hafta give? I still think Binky has got the tools to play point , he just needs to get the message.

Lights please, lights please, turn off the lights.

I don't get why Smart takes out Curry first, and puts Reggie at PG.

It is so god darn stupid. Monta and Reggie suck together. it makes Reggie play badly. Put him next to Steph and he’s very good, like we saw last year.

Steph screwed up his ankle a bit

So Reggie then went in for him

Anyone else think we shouldn't screen for Monta when he has the ball looking to score?

It just brings in another defender, he can just take anyone 1 on 1

About the pick-n-roll

I’m still watching, trying to figure out why we suck at it so bad.
I think a big component is that our screens are pretty lackluster.

A.) Lee does not appear to know how to set a screen. He either is too far away, or off-line (facing slightly the wrong way)

B.) Steph is horrible at using screens. It looks to me like he does not rub shoulders very well. This is simple fundamentals here! As the ball handler, you need to do a better job of running your man into the screen. Monta seems to get this, Steph: not so much

I hesitate to keep bashing on coach Smart, but this seems like a lack of coaching. There’s really no excuse for something like this happening on a regular basis
