Who do you think should be the coach next year?

Admits the GSOM civil war over Monta Ellis there seems to at least be one agreement. Don Nelson is our biggest issue second only to the  duo of Robert Rowell and Chris Cohan. I think it's pretty safe to say he's not the right coach for a young  team that is trying to find it's way. Lets assume he leaves next season, I'm wondering who you guys want to be the head coach here. With a young team we should be looking for a few qualities. Mainly a players coach, someone who the players can relate to and respect. Also someone who is hungry, wants to prove what he can do as a coach, someone who is motivated. Something Nellie is not. I've thought of a few guys that some people here have mentioned and some other names.

- Larry Drew, 52 : Currently he's an assistant coach for the Atlanta Hawks. He played 10 seasons in the NBA for the Clipper, Kings and Lakers from 1980 - 1990. He would come in and introduce a system similar to ours but more controlled and less small ball. He also helped with the development of Josh Smith and he may be able to help with our own Anthony Randolph

- Brian Shaw, 43 : An Oakland native who is currently an assistant on the Lakers. He was handed the key to the city during all star weekend here in Oakland. He played from 1988-2003 and bounced around the league and even a short stint with the Warriors. He could come in and teach the triangle offense but he may incorporate other offenses as well seeing as though in his playing days he only got in the triangle for the later stages of his career.

- Adrian Dantley, 53 : Currently the head assistant in Denver and was the head coach of the rookies this year in the Rookie Challenge. Played from 1976 - 1991. He was a great player and spent most of his years with the Utah Jazz. He's a somewhat defensive minded coach and was a very fundamentally sound player.

- Elston Turner, 51 : An assistant coach in Houston and was heavily considered for the Minnesota job last year and was interviewed for the Suns coaching job as well. He has been pursued by many teams to be a head coach. He also played for Dallas, Denver and Chicago in the 80's. My personal choice for the job after seeing the great coaching job of Houston this year without Yao Ming and was considered a non playoff team and is now right in the middle of the chase for 8th.

- Tom Thibodeau : Currently the head assistant in Boston and is a defensive guru. He has been a head coach in the ivy league before and is a graduate from there as well. He has been around for a long time coaching (15+ years). He was interviewed for the Sacramento Kings job last summer and is expected to be head coach eventually in the NBA.

- Sam Mitchell : Former Raptors head coach, he took them to the playoffs and even the 4th seed at one point. As a player he was a student of the game and helped Chris Bosh's development to what it is today. He played from 1985 - 2002 for Indiana and the Wolves. He won coach of the year in 2007 as well.

Ok, make your choice for who you think should be the head coach!

Seriously and not seriously. He’s like Nellie gone wild without the crazy rotations. As we watch ourselves get another top pick, at least do it in style, and i mean 115-145 games.

the lineups didn't bother me as much as his complete tactical incompitence

when phili double teamed monta, he seemed like a 12 year old looking at a calculus problem. Seems like a good enough assistant but we’d he’d be out matched by every coach in the league

by tafkasam on Feb 16, 2010 8:40 AM PST up reply actions

I don’t want to look too much into that kind of thing, because it’s a weird situation for a guy taking over for another coach and having to still do things Nellie’s way, so that’s why the lineups bother me the most, because he did things like play Mikki Moore even more than Nelson was, showing he clearly doesn’t really understand basic statistic principles, like how bad a rebounder Moore was and how much that hurt the team.

Too bad D’Antoni’s taken, huh? He’s got the high IQ and creativity of Nellie at his best, minus the craziness, the laziness, the outsized ego, and the disturbingly unprofessional attachments to and grudges against certain players. I heard from a guy who’s hung out with him that for a guy in such a high-profile position (in NYC no less) he’s an amazingly smart, personable, and down-to-earth guy…

by tafkasam on Feb 16, 2010 10:36 AM PST up reply actions

D’Antoni has shown he is a great coach. He arguably has one of the least talented rosters in the league, yet he keeps them competitive. He also knows when to abandon a strategy not fitted to the current personel, and he knows to limit minutes of those who aren’t contributing much. For all the ESPN hate he got for sitting Nate Robinson, the team was better with him out because he’s a low efficiency, turnover prone guard, with no defense. He knows what wins games, and who helps him accomplish that goal.

I want to say "I don't care"

so long as it’s not Nellie.

But that’s not true. I hate giving retreat NBA failures second and third chances.

Get a former player who you think has it in him. Get a hot young assistant with potential.

I have my reservations about Keith Smart, but I don’t hate the idea. Two real knocks on him:

1) His player rotations when Nellie was out.
2) The fact that, rumor has it, Randolph isn’t getting much 1-on-1 coaching. Everybody on the Warriors coaching staff is responsible for this as well as Nellie, if it’s true.

So heck, maybe I’mtalking myself into just cleaning house. If we’re going to toss Nellie and Cohan and Rowell and Riley, might as well bring in some new hotshot.

Of course, bringing in some young up-and-comer is how you end up with Dave Twarzick.

This is not a year ago, This is nearing the end of his career and the time is short. Getting the record as the Warriors coach is better publicity than we’ve had in two years. Once he’s gone we can turn over a new page that doesn’t include turnovers in the game plan.

Sorry but renewing the parade of coaches doesn’t do it for me. You might be correct that he’s not the right coach for a team of youngsters, but this bunch will all be rounding into their prime years next year. Nelson will do just fine (barring injuries) with that team.

There is no reason

to not give Keith Smart a shot at it. He’s gonna coach summer league again then he can have a full training camp in charge and management should allow him 15-25 games to prove himself. Next season is still gonna be a considered a rebuilding year unless we manage to land Bosh or Amare so there’s no legitimate reason not to give Smart a shot. If he aint working out then make a move while there’s still enough games to at least still have playoff hopes.

Hmmmmmm.....

Nice thread, Dubzfan. Let’s think about the type of coach the Warriors need: in theory, this team has two big, big problems. They don’t play enough D, and they are very young, so I think any prospective coach must be defensive-minded AND be able to relate to young players.

The pickins are slim, as they say:

I think Avery Johnson and Byron Scott both stink as coaches, so let’s toss them out. If the Warriors choose Smart, it’s basically a concession that no reasonable coach wants to work with this mess, because as many have noted, Smart just cannot be the best available (the coaching job in that game in Philly was just atrocious). The only good side of Smart is that it’s pretty clear he doesn’t think small-ball has any chance of working, so that’s a start, I guess.

Of the coaches listed, I would reluctantly vote for Thibodeau, but TBH, I’m not too familiar with him or any of the other coaches listed except Sam Mitchell. Brian Shaw would indeed be intriguing, but this team has no business running the triangle because I believe that system would minimize the effect of the PG.

One poster mentioned JVG, which sounds decent on paper, but I’m not so sure how that might work in practice. JVG might be a bit harsh on the young guys, and he might slow the tempo down too much.

I’ll throw out one name that has not yet been mentioned: how about Mo Cheeks? He’s still fairly young, he’s experienced, and he was a PG, which would be excellent for the development of Curry (and maybe Ellis). I’d be a bit concerned, however, about his commitment to defense.

by UncleCliffy on Feb 16, 2010 11:40 PM PST reply actions

Interesting

Cheeks was not impressive in Philly but not a bad thought. Although I think someone like Turner or Dantley can relate better to today’s player better. I certainly would like Mo and would not be opposed to him
