Nelson and his record ...
Everyday, I read through many trade ideas, proposals, and other fantasies we as warrior fans entertain, obliviating the fact that we entered rebuilding mode a while ago ...
Players are constantly being criticized. One week it's Monta, the next week it's Maggs, the one after it's Biedrins and so on and so forth. The one consistent thing I see amongst all the negative things, is Don Nelson's inept and inconsistent coaching. He is done with, and gets credit for things such as the we believe era which was the player's achievement more than his "masterful" coaching prowess. Funny how he doesn't look so ingenious without Baron and jackson to name a few ...
However we must still put through and watch him stunt our young player's growth for the sake of his freakin' record !
I know this isn't new, but since it appears he will not be clinching the record this year, how long will we have to put up with this delusion ? I know we have multitudes of injuries right now, but this started long before the injuries ...
We are in rebuilding mode on one hand, but he is often reluctant to play the young players when they are available, and sacrifices Monta's long term health by exploiting anything he can out of him because he knows Monta is the only one ready to win right now and will help clinch his ludicrous record ... Don Nelson is known for his "creative coaching" however his strategy always seems to give a couple players complete freedom to jack up shots and all other players freedom to do nothing and wait because they might be pulled out any second with no rational reason ...
I can't wait for him to be out of here, his laziness and inconsistency and getting credit for having coached great players ! Get your record and be gone !!! Then we will be able to rebuild with a real plan and not hole fillers to fullfill this man's egotistical quest !
Most Championship teams are built through the draft, and not free agency ! Especially a team that will always avoid the luxury tax ... then again you have to inspire confidence in your young players ....
I don't think Ellison will do Miracles, but the first step in rebuilding is starting from ground zero and ridding us of lack of commitment !

this team has about 3 healthy players. Phil Jackson wouldn’t be doing any better with this team.
And if you don’t think Nellie was a major player in the We Believe team – you’re just high. Remember the 13 straight years before he stepped in as coach….?
i feel your pain – i have NBA league pass and i didn’t bother tivo-ing the last two games because i couldn’t bear to watch another “we fought hard and ran out of steam at the end” loss.
But the fact that this team is IN virtually every game until the waning moments of the fourth shows this team hasn’t quit – and the coach has a little something to do with that also.
This team, together and healthy next year could win 50 games. Healthy.

Way before our injury problems, he used to pull the youngsters out to give minutes to Moore or Kurz or other bottom feeders …. for what ? 5 extra meaningless games in a 29 win season ? I don’t understand this logic … these few wins make a difference in only 1 category … Don Nelson’s all time achievements …
50 wins ?? if we are healthy … + 500. record with this youth would be a great achievement but still unlikely …

what do you mean way before our injury problems… wright went out before the season even started. you really think he woulda givin miki minutes of him?,Nelly even said he looekd the best comming in from the summer and training camp. Beidrins was out early bc of his injury, turiaf too. we were down to either anthony randolph, vladrad, miki moore, or george to play the 4/5 spots.
I’m not mentioning this season uniquely … And Moore did take quality time away from Randolph, for poor production to say the least … illogical to me …

If Nellie were going for his “freakin’ record” why would he be playing inferior players like Moore and Kurz? Playing behind Rob Kurz was part of AR’s early development last year.
Kurz isn’t that bad. Moore was. Playing worse players won’t help Nellie get his record. I’m pretty sure Nellie thought Moore was a terrible player, seeing how when he coached games, he barely played, but when Smart coached, Moore got 25+ minutes.

Playing behind Rob Kurz was part of AR’s early development
Seriously, did it take you all day to come up with this theory ? How in the world could any player develop adequately playing behind R.Kurz ?
The reasoning behind playing Moore, is that he is a vet and therefore less mistake prone … It has nothing to do with talent or potential, otherwise AR would have been playing … A million practice hours will never be worth playing in real games …
I wonder how many fans are in Denial about their own team ???

The quick hook on Randolph was his teaching tool. He wasn’t learning from mistakes by playing more, so he was being yanked as punishment. To make sure he’d remember what he did wrong. This combined with all the rumors that he’s tough to coach makes me think that the pulling him probably was good for his development.
heart of a champion, will of the warrior.
We'll never know.
There are rumors that Randolph was “tough to coach” but there were also rumors that Nellie didn’t even try, that Randolph wasn’t getting any one-on-one time with coaches explaining to him what they needed to do.
Obviously, we will never know which of those was the truth until we see how Randolph performs under a different coach. That being said, from the frustration and body language, I’m more likely to believe Randolph’s side of the story.
ALthough I admit that’s because I think, for a variety of reasons, that Nellie has simply stopped trying.
I think Randolph’s rookie year improvement was one of the bright spots of last year. He didn’t seem to like the treatment, but at least last year, it seemed to work.
heart of a champion, will of the warrior.
Correlation does not necessarily equal causation though.
I don’t know, I remember agreeing with Nelson’s handling of Randolph last year, but now I’m thinking that maybe Randolph was developing in spite of him, because this year he seems to have regressed (and by regressed I mean hasn’t progressed as far as I thought he would have).
Yeah, it’s pretty much all speculation when it comes to figuring out exactly how much of development is on the coach and how much is the players doing. What I saw was a player that looked very lost at the beginning of the season cut down on the dumb mistakes substantially as the year progressed. Maybe it’s Nellie’s fault he wasn’t prepared for the start of the year, but eventually, he got a lot better at the sorts of things you need practice for, not game experience (learning the offensive and defensive sets, basic fundamental basketball, etc).
heart of a champion, will of the warrior.
Remember the 13 straight years before he stepped in as coach….?
I remember something about us having a franchise big man that would make us a perennial playoff team, and him getting traded because he didn’t get along with the coach, and that leading us to 13 straight years of awful losing, if that’s what you mean…

There's no way we win 50 games.
I suspect, healthy, we’d end up in the low-to-mid 30s, which is a hell of a lot better than we are.
But this team has been coached horribly even if you ignore the injuries. Oixcn pointed this out in one of his posts in another thread, so I wont’ repeat it, but it’s pretty unambiguous.
Um...
This team, together and healthy next year could win 50 40 games. IF Healthy.
A Sonics fan without a team... but after 6 seasons now of GS Warriors season tickets have convinced me to adopt the boys from Oakland.
ince it appears he will not be clinching the record this year
That’s looking less and less likely with every loss this season, we may just BARELY hit 24 wins this year…
WARRIORS BASKETBALL!!! Patiently waiting for a title...I may be waiting for a long time...
we may just BARELY hit 24 wins this year…
How many more does Nellie need?
I just look at it like the last year of the Bush administration, we know it will end soon and there’s nothing we can do about it now.
Lights please, lights please, turn off the lights.

I don't think Don is getting his 24 wins
We have 13 wins at the moment. I looked at the schedule and I can only see 4 more wins: home against Sac, home against Detroit, home against NY, and away at Minnesota. Every other team is better than us, even some of the teams I listed are better but at least I think we have a chance. It’s going to be a loooooong 2 1/2 months.
We'll win some shockers
There always is, plus AR will be back eventually
Rookie: "Why did you bench me?"
Nellie: "You're a rookie"
We'll win some shockers
We’ll also lose some games that we’re supposed to win. Which would be shockers for the other team. Regardless, it’s going to be a very close call to 24 wins this season…

With all the recent losing, Nelsons lack of coaching becomes even more apparent
When the momentum starts to tilt in the wrong way, coaches need to make a change. Its not up to the players to decide what to do, the Coach needs to figure out how to get his team out of a slump. When the Warriors start to clank shots from outside, they need to run an actual set play to get an easy bucket, not shoot an 18ft jumper off a high screen. I yelled at my tv so many times last night seeing that from Curry. And I worry that even though he’s a smart kid and knows good basketball, Nelson will “teach” him so many bad habits that he will become stunted as a player even after Nelson is gone. All we can hope for is Nelson to get his wins this year and get out.
Well said
I’ve grown so sick of Nelson’s game plan out there that it isn’t even enjoyable for me to watch games anymore. As you said, he gives 1-2 guys on the team carte blanche to run ISO’s all day and just hopes for the best. I think that offensive strategy might work if that player is a well-rounded point-guard who knows how to set up and find his teammates (e.g. Baron). However, if those two players are Monta and Maggette, arguably two of the worst passing scorers in the league, you are going to have a very dysfunctional offense.
Is it any kind of mystery why teams are able to pull away from us in the 3rd or 4th quarter seemingly at will? All they have to do is start playing tight defense on M8E and Maggs and our offense grinds to a halt.

To a non-Warrior hoop fan, you guys are almost unwatchable.
I also have League Pass and watch a bunch of Warrior games as I have/had multiple Warriors on my fantasy team (Randolph, Biedrins, Morrow, CJ Watson briefly). This team is absolutely ridiculous, and I don’t think there is ANY defense of Don Nelson, who in my opinion hasn’t been relevant for YEARS. If not for Baron Davis (whom I also LOATHE as a player) doing his best Michael Jordan impression against Dallas, you guys would have ZERO to show for Nelson’s latest tenure. This latest offense, which looks like something out of a pick-up game, is idiotic. Monta Ellis is an incredible talent who is being ruined by a failure of coaching. His game is fool’s gold in its effectiveness. His scoring is amazing, but his monopolization of the ball and incredible turnover rate just destroy the rest of the team. He is Allen Iverson with even fewer rules. Nelson indulges his worst characteristics to the point of insanity.
In addition, his latest treatment of Biedrins is so weird that I think we can almost assume that he has dementia at this point.
I honestly don’t SEE any coaching occurring on this team currently.

Bless you for saying this. Not many people outside of Oakland seem to recognize just how bad things have gotten here, and we’d probably be rid of Nellie sooner if his incompetence were more common knowledge.
Golden State Worriers: Angst & Analysis
I’m actually starting to agree… Maybe not that he doesn’t coach at all because I think he teaches plenty in practice, but he must not be telling players what they have to do in games. I find it hard to believe that Nellie can’t make the guys share the ball more… We had more turnovers than assists against Dallas for the nth time this season.

Well, the problem is Nellie says the assistants do the practices, and we know he doesn’t coach in the games, so….

Sadly Nellie is only one of our problems
Cohen’s retarded self is paying him 6million/yr to be on the sidelines. Im sure he wanted him to actually coach our team but the fact that he has been disinterested these last 2 years doesn’t matter to Cohen because he is not going to eat the remainder of Nellie’s contract. Regardless we wouldn’t be much better if we had a better coach but undoubtedly our player development would be better. What Nellie was doing to Randolph earlier in the year and what he’s doing to Beans right now is so effin rediculous it’s obvious he’s lost his desire/knowhow to build a winning team. When he had Baron, Jack, J-Rich and Al he had vets who knew how to play and all he had to teach them was how to run his offense. Now he has a bunch of kids who need to be taught how to play winning basketball and he can’t relate to them so he struggles to get through to these kids. He’s turning Monta into Iverson which means great scoring but high turnovers and ballhogging. That doesn’t fit a team that has 5+ players capable of scoring 20+ on any given night. Monta should be concerned with being our closer while getting his teammates more involved during the first 3 quarters but instead Nellie lets him run wild. Alot of people like to compare Roy and Monta so heres one big difference between them that makes Roy a much better player at this point. 82 games . com has a clutch statistics section which uses the last 5 minutes of the game and overtime as their basis. Monta averages 29.9ppg per 48 on .375eFG% while Roy averages 36.4 on .500eFG%. WOW, thats a huge difference. My feeling is thats a by-product of Monta playing 40mpg while Roy plays 31mpg but either way we are not winning games so why not see if less is more? I know injuries have us handcuffed but Nellie has never been able to use his bench in an efficient way like say Phil Jackson does. For us Warrior fans to have any hope at seeing Monta, Steph, and Randolph get us to the playoffs first thing that needs to happen is Ellison buy the team. Secondly Nellie has to be relieved of his duties and they can give Smart a chance if they want but 20 games at most if we struggle. Otherwise Avery and Scott should get strong consideration. If Nellie is still in charge next season we can maybe make the playoffs if healthy but we all know Nellie led teams don’t go far so conference championship aspirations are out of the question. But barring any significant pickup this offseason the playoffs would be a huge accomplishment. Either way it sucks being a Warrior fan right now but I can’t care for any other team the way I do the W’s so let the struggle continue.
P.S. Anyone here who thinks Nellie should stay needs to get off that Nor-Cal bud and hit up some rehab like Beasley cause he’s clearly lost his desire to be an elite coach in this league. He needs to do us a favor and join Dunleavy in the unemployment line.
good grief
It seems highly likely to me that Nellie is just here to get the wins record and then retire. This "rebuilding mode" is a total farce. Right now the only healthy players that fit into the "long term plan" would be: Ellis, Maggette, Curry, Biedrins, and Turiaf. All these players are signed through 11/12 and we have to assume Curry’s rookie contract will extend through that season too. So how are these players being used and how does that relate to the "rebuilding mode"??
If this were a true rebuilding mode wouldn’t a goal for the rest of THIS season be improving these 5 players? Sacrifice success this season in order to get better in weak areas. Curry should get a lot of minutes in order to get better and adjust to the NBA schedule, defenses, etc. Curry is the main argument for the apparent "rebuilding" effort, he’s averaging 35 minutes his last 5 games…this is a good thing! But Curry is an exceptional rookie, with undoubtedly a shooting touch more advanced than your average rookie, and good passing skills. Yes, he’s a big part of the long term plan, but at the same time he still contributes to wins more than your average rebuilding project….namely Andris Biedrins. If this were truly a rebuilding effort, AB would be getting more than 21 minutes and 5 shots PER GAME in his last five games. Not only that, AB has exactly ZERO free throws in his last five games. That’s unbelievable for your starting center of the future. Why pay AB $11m per year through 13/14 to be your center, and then give him minimal low post touches in a rebuilding year?? How is the guy supposed to improve when he doesn’t get the opportunity in meaningless games?? Give him 10 looks on the low block per game, let him struggle and develop his game down low. Wouldn’t that benefit the team more long term?? Add Turiaf’s lack of shots per game, and you’re giving nothing to your future front line. Awesome!
That’s a pretty long rant, I’m sorry, but if Monta is complaining about lack of help now what’s going to happen in 3 years with AB, Turiaf still playing around him? Suffer now, get them shots, improve, and get better for upcoming seasons….
So I’m convinced the current "rebuilding mode" is a farce due to the above rant and Biedrins’ horrid lack of opportunity. And the following could be the reason for the team not fully rebuilding:
—Nelson is too old to devote the time (in games) to develop young players
—Nelson just wants to get his wins record and move on
—The team is planning to make a huge trade splash, and move a lot of the pieces currently on the team and few players are really part of the rebuilding effort.
I’m not sure what is actually happening, but this is what I would like to see:
—Nelson gets his record and then send him packing
—Trade Monta (he’s not a #1 alpha dog on a championship team, but thinks that he is)
—Trade Maggette if possible to rid ourselves of the worst contract in history of mankind
—Build around Curry, Randolph, 2010 pick, Player X from Monta trade, and resign Raja Bell to add chemistry, toughness, defense, and leadership for young players.

Everyone knows I deserve the record
but they are treating the ABA coaches differently from the ABA players.
However, I relish the fact that MY team not only be in the playoffs this year (and the following two years as well), but will pull at least one upset, while Nellie and HIS team will be in hiding, praying for the draft to land John Wall in their laps, so they can move him to power forward.
