senseless warnings for capitalization and grammar need to stop! is there anyone out there in moderator land that understands how language works? language is for _communcation_. its primary function is not to be pretty, or orderly, but to _communicate_. that's what we do on this site isn't it?
has this issue not been discussed at length already? issuing warning and/or banning people for not capitalizing letters or using improper grammar is ludicrous! if this threat were carried out to the letter of the law there would be no on on this site at all.
furthermore it seems specifically to target capitalization, which, as i have explained at great length on this topic, is about the least important rule to facilitate clear communication than almost any other i can think of in language.
this offensive and stupid behavior/policy is totally unacceptable, and does nothing to improve communication. it is akin to asserting everyone be required to communicate in latin because it is the more regal language. perhaps we should all be required to write in iambic pantamet. rediculous!
i invite my fellow gsomers to comment here with your own feelings about these absurd policies and how they have affected your ability to enoy this site.
thanks,

it has to do with writing and isn’t specifically about capitalization so if you work for/on this site you’ve probably never heard of it.

I am a highschool freshmen and I do know
that it does have to do with the way that you are accentuating your words. It should not be required. I didn’t even know that it was a rule.
Living for a magical 8th seed run
Welcome to my world.
I have been questioning this policy for months now. I emailed courteous letters to Atma and I get no response. When I did question them in a fanpost I get warned for making the fanpost cause I was “inciting” hatred. I was also banned for capitalization. Total BS. Especially since this rule seem to magically appear after last year.
Also this site generates a ton of money(look at all the ads) from someone close to the admin team. Where is it all going? GSOM night?
i also wrote a courteous email to all available adresses with no response. you would think if they were receiving multiple emails with the same confusion about seemingly senseless policies they would at least have the courtesy to inform the users of their site what the supposed purposes are!
i consider myself very well informed on the subject of the english language and i am absolutely floored! is this website for publishing formal essays for review, or having friendly discussions about basketball? i have no problem with holding posts or even fanshots to higher standards, but requiring capitalization for comments?? that is honestly just asinine.

Saint, for some reason I like you. You’ve been around for quite a while, and while your posts are rarely more than one or two sentences long, you are generally friendly and cool with everyone here. But, I’ve got to call you out on this one. If that is what you got out of the warning that was sent to you, you clearly didn’t take the time to read it carefully and try to understand it. I just read it again and nowhere does it talk about “inciting hatred” as you claim. The situation was explained to you rather clearly. I noticed since then you’ve generally used proper grammar and capitalization. Is it really such a hassle?

Yes that's because I posts
in the Gamethread and Fanshots. I leave the in-depth analysis in the Fanposts to the professionals who like to analyze stats.
That inciting hatred thing is just from memory. I am still pretty peeved about getting banned. Then having my Fanpost asking for an explanation/discussion getting deleted. The real response was probably “You’re all drama.” The warning tells me I was banned for multiple warnings etc etc and going off topic which I don’t agree with. I hate that I can get banned for arbitrary reasons like that. When I flagged a bunch of posts that was off topic. I was warned for flagging offtopic comments?
Its just a combination of things about this site that annoys me. I only come back to it because SBnation has great comment features and the fans that post on the GameThread here are great and its lot of fun commiserating with people.
Fair enough.
You had a bad experience, and I’m sorry for that. You have to admit though, you received a ton of warnings about spelling grammar and caps before anyone took any action. The courteous thing to do would have been to modify your behavior after a couple warnings. You chose not to and eventually action was taken.
We are all trying to have fun here. I think Atma and the guys are just doing their best to keep this a fun, friendly place with quality writing. They think these guidelines will help to keep this a place people love to visit to talk W’s hoops. You may not agree with the way everything is handled, but it works for the most part.
Anyway, I’m glad that you decided to stick around and hit the shift key every once in a while. I hope Bimbo does the same.

Yes
I talked to a source. He claimed to know the admin team here.
I didn’t bring up GSOM to him. We were talking about the Warriors and he started telling me about GSoM and the money this site generates. It made sense to me because of all the Google Adsense stuff I see.
If the source is lying to me
just say so. He might have been misinformed. I am just going by what I heard.
Well...
we already know that they use some of the cash to buy season tickets that they share with the staff and sometimes the community. Does it bother you that someone who spends this much time running a website might put a couple bucks in his pocket at the end of the year? I don’t know if that is even the case mind you, but it certainly wouldn’t bother me if I found out that the main writers were making a profit from all of their hard work around here. Why should it have any impact on this discussion?
"I could be chasing an untamed ornithoid without cause."
It should have a impact.
Because we as the community are helping generate this revenue. Us “regulars” who come back again and again. I don’t expect any money. I just want a say in some of the site “rules.” Shouldn’t Atma be implementing rules to make GSoM a more friendly welcoming place so we can have more discussions with more fans?
Blazersedge (a far more popular place then GSoM) has no problem with letting members type comments without capitalization. Do you believe blazersedge is low quality because of that?
And I just want to add
GSOM functioned fine when this capitalization/grammar rule wasn’t enforced. What changed? I never got warned for capitalization and grammar until this Summer when suddenly someone discovered their inner grammar Nazi and started handing out warnings to me like crazy.
I have the worst spelling and grammer of anyone I know
yet I’ve never been warned on this site for either. I guess I just can’t relate to what your talking about.

regulars such as ourselves do generate hits that probably do result in profits, although i don’t know for certain. if that is the case, however, it seems like a good reason to include participants(members) in the policy making. certainly control lays in the hands of those that maintain it, but i don’t see why our opinion on this topic is not more valued. we are the consumers of, and contribute to, this product after all!

When you sign up for an account on GSoM here’s what you’re agreeing to:
The Golden State of Mind community is comprised of some of the most intelligent, passionate, and friendly hoops fans you’ll find anywhere. GSoM will always be a family show and readers of all ages and backgrounds are welcome.
Here’s the rules:
* no swearing
* no personal attacks

We (there’s a bunch of people behind the scenes working to keep this place high quality) send numerous notes requesting people to follow the rules above. If they’re ignored, then the commenter is simply wasting our time, hurting the quality of this community, and quite frankly deserves a ban.
This is not very complicated and does not need to be re-addressed ad nausea every few weeks. Thank you.

This is not very complicated and does not need to be re-addressed ad nausea every few weeks. Thank you.
and yet it is complicated, and this quote demonstrates this. you write “ad nausea”. the correct latin phrase is “ad nauseum”. should you therefore be warned or banned based on the improper usage of a word?
i see errors in virtually every post i’ve ever read. unless people are proof reading their comments four or five times over, they will inevitably make a lot of mistakes, and that should be acceptable! i knew what “ad nasuea” meant, and the mistake did not detract from my comprehension of the meaning of the sentence at all. i’m not talking about an inability to form an argument or use logic here, i’m talking about grammar and punctuation. it simply isn’t reasonable to presuppose that one is causally linked with the other. the former is the core of the thoughts being communicated, and the latter is akin to the difference between helvetica and a font utilizing serifs. in other words, these are decorations, not related to the subject itself. obviously one could demonstrate that a misplaced comma might confuse one’s point, but a total lack of commas makes for pretty easily understood run on sentences, for example.
having said that, i do understand and agree with the concept of holding fanshots, and especially fanposts, to a higher standard. these are intended to be written in a journalistic style, which i enjoy reading. in fact, i recently had a fanpost recommended because i willingly adhereed to these standards, among other things. however, i cannot agree that comments should be held to the same standards. comments are by definition first drafts. they should be passionate and unencumbered by silly conventions. can you not, at the very least, reconsider the policy for capitalization in comments? pretty please with a cherry on top!?!? i love this site and i’d hate to have to stop participating because of something this silly!

Question.
Wouldn’t it be easier for you to occasionally hit the shift key than to spend all this time complaining about the rules? They have received complaints about it in the past and they have obviously come to the conclusion that they would rather enforce these rules. Just because you don’t agree doesn’t change things, and you posting insulting comments like
note: that’s "iambic pantameter"
it has to do with writing and isn’t specifically about capitalization so if you work for/on this site you’ve probably never heard of it.
don’t really help your cause, they just make you look like a jerk. Moderating a community of this size can be quite time consuming, and whether you believe it or not, there is very often a correlation between posting with poor grammar and capitalization and not being a productive member of the community. Are there exceptions? Of course, there is you, tafkasam, and capn’hack just to name a few. Every so often there will be a decent poster that gets caught in the crossfire because of this rule. How about instead of insisting that the site change its policies you just take the time to follow the rules?
Why do some people who receive these warnings go on tilt like this and make such a fuss? Like Atma said it’s not that complicated.

Why not simply be obedient for the sake of it? Because I am a human being, endowed with the ability to reason, which allows me to understand how stupid it is to have a rule for capitalization which applies to comments.
I was actually in the middle of typing an apology for being overly emotional right now when I recieved two warnings in a row. Now I will be forced to capitalize if I am to communicate at all. Presumably some faceless administrator is pleasuring himself to this, hunched over a laptop in his mothers basement. “Yessssss my pretties! Be abased before me, and punctuate as I dictate!” I can think of no other reason such idiocy would be allowed to be taken to this level. Since this particular policy has been enacted I spent a great deal of time being annoyed, a brief time being incredulous, and now I am officially super pissed! Thanks GSOM! Whoever you are, diddling yourself while thinking of the power you weild by forcing me to capitalize, know that I loath you and your inflexible, non-communicative, irrational, senseless policies! you should get a job at the department of homeland security or the border patrol. I don’t actually have a problem with the rule. My only issue was I didn’t receive a clear response until recently (thank you Atma) as to why I was banned. Just a trite two line response along the lines of “Low Quality Prose”.
I later found out it was to do with spelling, capitalization, punctuation and have since taken more time to edit my posts. I don’t have a problem with that. IF I had have known I would have made a bigger effort before, wish it was better communicated.
I think too many people get warned/banned without knowledge it’s mostly grammar based.
Anyway, no warm no foul. It may be tedious having to edit your posts, but i do appreciate the end result. Go see some sites where it’s not as well regulated. It’s poor

Not everyone has the priveledge of having literate parents, or even to have parents/gaurdians who speak English (don’t forget to capitalize that one!!!!!!!!!) as a first language. I am annoyed by some error based on grammar/spelling/etc. in virtually every post or comment. Such is the price of knowledge. I don’t think it’s unreasonable to ask people to conform to basic standards of writing.
But isn’t that in itself relative? What are “basic standards” and how is anyone to know what GSoM’s “basic standards” are? This is assuming GSoM doesn’t ask for absolutely correct grammar- if users were banned after three grammatical blunders the site would be unusable. For example, anyone who writes “Randolph, after 3 years in the league…” has to get a warning since numbers under 10 (or 20, depending on whom you talk to) should be spelled out.
My point is that it’s silly to prescribe a level of grammatical adherence as “basic” and expect everyone else’s “basic” to coincide with your own. I realize this makes writing guidelines very difficult. It would help if the guidelines were more easily accessible- I can’t find them anywhere.
Well yeah...
it’s somewhat relative, but it’s not runaway relativism for the sake of relativism. It would be ridiculous if moderators went over each comment with a fine tooth comb looking for subtle grammatical errors and then issued bans over them. Of course that’s not actually what’s happening. What’s happening is that people who consistently use poor grammar, spelling or punctuation are issued a warning that looks something like this:
In the future please use proper capitalization, spelling, and grammar for your (FanPosts, comments) or they will be hidden. Thanks!
or
Comments on GSoM need to be of substance. In the future please use proper capitalization, spelling, and grammar for your Comments or they will be hidden.
These are fairly friendly reminders of what is expected to participate here. They are standard warnings authored by Atma for the purpose of informing or reminding members to put a little effort into their contributions here. The vast majority of people here never need a warning, and of the people who do receive them the vast majority just change the behavior (maybe as a sign of respect for the hard work that the staff here does to keep this place going?). Then there are others that respond by making posts like this and insulting the intelligence of the staff here.
My point is that it’s silly to prescribe a level of grammatical adherence as "basic" and expect everyone else’s "basic" to coincide with your own. I realize this makes writing guidelines very difficult.
Yeah, they may not make sense to everyone, but it’s not that difficult. Pretty much everyone here abides by the guidelines whether they have read them or not, so I think you’d have a hard time arguing that they are too strict or obscure for the community in general.
It would help if the guidelines were more easily accessible- I can’t find them anywhere.
Yeah, this is a problem. Not everyone pays attention to the guidelines when they accept the user agreement here (though they obviously should). That is where the warnings come in. If you receive a warning about grammar and choose to ignore it you will probably be warned again and again (some members have had up to 12 warnings before further action), and eventually banned (really, you can only expect to waste so much of the moderators time before they get tired of dealing with you). However, if you receive a warning and try to do your best to follow the guidelines in the future (like you, Rated-R and countless others have) this can still be a very fun place to talk hoops.
Personally, a lack of capitalization doesn’t bother me. I wouldn’t issue a warning just for that. Of course this isn’t my website and they aren’t my rules, so if I want to take part in GSoM (and obviously I enjoy the community here) then I have to collect my thoughts, push shift, spell check, and refrain from cursing and name calling. I really don’t mind doing those things, which makes this community a good fit for me. If someone has a hard time with it then maybe this isn’t the right place for them to talk Warriors basketball, right? There are tons of other forums and blogs that they could try out. It’s not like GSoM has the exclusive rights to talking Warriors hoops online and is forcing you to comply with their guidelines. There are lots of sites with lots of different guidelines.

I like them, actually. I think the community needs them to function properly. Go to the Seattle Mariners blog where even the “+1” is banned and then come back here to complain. I’ve been warned only once and it was warranted. I don’t think the rules here are harsh at all.

Sheeps follow the rules mindlessly without ever questioning why they do so. If you truly accept this rule that’s your choice, but me and Bimbo obviously have a difference of opinion from the staff here and we’re voicing it in a nonvolatile manner. Remember in order to enact change someone has to do something. No one ever overthrew a tyrant by accepting the rules.
So capitalization in a comment field is comporable to wearing slacks to an office job?

In a way yes, we don’t need to wear pants to survive, and we don’t need to capatalize to communicate. However me not wearing pants may offend, annoy or make people uncomfortable. You choosing constantly “forgetting” to capatalize and period would annoy the heck out of me (and probably others) and make normal conversatione difficult.

Just an idea
I think that it is good to regulate what goes on on fanshots and fanposts but I think during game threads it should be a lot looser. A lot of the time people are in the heat of the moment and aren’t going to spend the time to keep up with the grammer.
Game Thread comments are held to a completely different standard for the reasons you rightfully noted.

Note that it’s a bit harder to read words that are:
1. Not deeply ingrained into your vocabulary (i.e. bandied)
2. Long and broken up by a space (i.e. conversation)
Balance’s quote does have a point (we see words as a whole), and the research isn’t bunk. However, the suggestion that you can add spaces in the middle of words is ridiculous. You can only do it when the reader knows what’s coming. And people normally have a reading/listening vocabulary that is 2-3x larger than their speaking/writing vocabulary. I wouldn’t expect somebody to be able to spot a word they don’t use in their speaking vocabulary.

It also doesn't address the misuse of grammar
Anybody who’s ever tried to read something that doesn’t use correct grammar can attest to the fact that it’s not difficult and time consuming to read in many, many instances. Which is why the writer should take a minute to read what they’ve written and make sure their grammar is correct. It’s much easier to correct grammar when you know what idea the sentence is trying to get across than when you don’t.

The real funny part to me...
Is that it was somehow easier for me to read that word jumble above than it is for me to read a lot of the internet/texting short hand that I see here from time to time.
As for the conversation at hand, I’m totally with you. I like the standards here. Knowing that the vast majority of what I see here will at least be legible is a big part of what makes this a fun place to visit.
"I could be chasing an untamed ornithoid without cause."
I think there is only a certain percentage of the population that can actually read that,
or at least I’ve seen that information presented with that block of text before. I can read it fine, but I don’t think everyone can.

It's readable
But imagine if every other person posted on this site like that, but used numbers instead of letters, didn’t use periods because it’s “stupid,” didn’t capatalize at the start of their sentences. GSOM would have to change their name to Golden State of Migraines.

Also to be noted
Spelling errors don’t always happen in the middle of words. Can you read this:

Look people, in order for communication to happen, your reader/listener needs to be able to understand what you write/say. It’s not that complicated. Using standard protocol is useful. It ensures understanding on the part of the reader. If you do not write such that people can understand what you’re written without hurting their brain, people will not read what you’ve written. If many people start writing in was that people don’t enjoy reading, this website will be flooded with material that people don’t want to read, and the community will shrink. Sure, not everyone will leave, but enough of it will disappear to reduce the population to the point where it becomes a detriment to the overall quality of the writing at GSoM.
Bottom line: If you feel persecuted, go write somewhere else that allows you to write however you like. Just don’t expect me to follow you there.
Countdown restart: T-60 days until this conversation recurs.

What is this word: “rscheearch”? I can’t figure it out. I was thinking “research,” but there’s an extra “c” and an “h” in there… and it doesn’t work grammatically.
