Come Playoffs, how about East vs West?
Sometimes the playoffs just don't entertain us like they used to. Once the long regular season ends, we saddle up to watch a series with LA vs Portland??? or Orlando vs... Miami??? Nahhh. How about we choose a "Michael Bay-type" opening to the playoffs where it's East vs West -- your preference. Guns ablazing.
Cleveland (1) vs Denver (2)
If Kobe was healthy, it would be a great show. However, I decided to match the offensive skill of Lebron against the offensive skill of Carmelo and Chauncey. The series will be highlighted by clutch shot after clutch shot with unmatched precision.
Orlando (2) vs LA (1)
Both of these teams are very good at running their game, but they both tend to become complacent. When it comes to playoffs, it's either you or them. When the game is on the line, expect both teams to put their egos on the line, too. Both teams have plenty of star power to get physical inside each others heads!
Atlanta (3) vs Utah (4)
These two teams have a lot of muscle (1-5) and they're not afraid to use it. It will be the most physical series of the playoffs. Bruises for everyone.
Boston (4) vs Phoenix (6)
Boston's defense is already deteriorating as the season comes to a close and Phoenix's offense is just heating up. Will Boston's defense be able to keep Phoenix under wraps? Or. Will Phoenix scorch the retiring core? This will have to go to a Game 7 and triple-ot.
Milwaukee (5) vs San Antonio (7)
Milwaukee has a valuable big man and a crazy, play-making guard. San Antonio also has a valuable big man and a crazy, play-making guard. San Antonio is trying to hold it together, while Milwaukee just figured it out. Something tells me this series would be beautiful.
Charlotte (6) vs Portland (8)
Brandon Roy has vowed to carry his team as far as his body can go. This would be akin to Dwyane Wade being solely responsible for Dallas' downfall in the 2006 finals, except Roy would try to accomplish that against a more, crippling defense.
Miami (7) vs Oklahoma City (5)
This will be mano-a-mano. Wade vs Durant. Your defense against mine. You hit a three, I'll hit a three. You dunk, I'll windmill dunk. You get the picture.
Toronto (8) vs Dallas (3)
Dallas gets hampered down in it's defense. Against Toronto (an up-tempo series - catering to the likes of Marion and Kidd), it will be all out jump shooting and fast breaks. Bargnani is going to shoot against Nowitzki. Who will take on Bosh and who wins out against Calderon/Jack vs Kidd.
There you have it, a blockbuster opening to the 2010 playoffs. Okay, this was just all for fun and something better to think about than pouting about our off-season.

No, you can’t have conference champs if you don’t have geographical playoffs. Once you start mixing east and west teams it loses it’s coherence.

I know ESPN is telling you the celtics defense is bad this year, but they are still ranked in the top 2 in defensive efficiency.
They are a terrible rebounding team. That is the only reason they aren’t as good as Cleveland most likely.
Nellie needs to go! but while we suffer....John Wall or Evan Turner please!
In it's last 5 games
Boston is ranked 18th, while Phoenix is amazingly sitting in 7th.

actually, my bad that is difference efficiency. They’re 11th in Deff, Phoenix is 21st (last 5). However, Phoenix’s OEff is top-notch.

those are fantasy stats….nothing meaningful.

Lol, really? how so?
I got it from here though, http://www.nbastuffer.com/2009-2010_NBA_Regular_Season_Advanced_Stats.html

Why would they make the playoffs this way?
There still will be really good matchups, especially after the first round, and there seems to be no method to you’re system whatsoever… It seems like you want the nba to call you up and the end of the season and say, “Hey GoldenBlue, who would you like to see play each other in the playoffs?”
Uh
basically, YES! I never made an argument to have a playoff structure change into this. Just a ‘what if’ if we could squeeze out the most entertaining matchups with East vs West.

A top 16 would be the most entertaining
with a format of
first round 1-13, 2-14, 3-15, 4-16, 5-12, 6-11, 7-10, 8-9 with top 2 seeds remaining from each conference being given homecourt for first 2 rounds to keep some conference importance and added drama.
second round re-seed everyone based on who makes it through keeping order of rank so if 1-8 all win you have 1-8, 2-7, 3-6, 4-5.
third round again re-seed by rank.
If you did do this, I don't get why you would do 1 v 2 in the first round.
1w v 8e 2w v 7e and so on and so forth.
However, I am an advocate for the ‘top 16’ format. Buncha east coas garb nobody’s fitna watch is hella lame and boring.
I just feel that if you’re going to do this, the whole schedule needs to be redid. Play every team in your division 4 times, every other team you play 3 times, whether they are east or west.
what the?
dude where do you even get the idea to match up uneven seeds with the east and west like 3rd vs 4th, and 4th vs 6th?…
warriors all the way, coming your way.
Guys
I wasn’t seriously changing the playoff structure. This was just a way to see if I could get an exciting 8 series matchup between east vs west, since the teams rarely play each other. This was more of an idea to think about which matchups would be the most electrifying.

which matchups would be the most electrifying?
I’d say Lakers vs Golden State for the NBA crown
